Up to what time can I recover my database?

I have lost all of my current controlfiles and I have to recover my database using a backup controlfile. Up to what time can I recover my database?---------No.204

In another thread you said you had your OCP. What test are these questions for?
Along the same line as your other asking what is next, have you tried recreating this problem? It is one thing to be able to give an answer, being able to actually perform the work is what your future employer is looking for.

  • Can I recover the database to the current time using a backup control file?

    Can I recover the database to the current time using a backup control file? How far can I recover this database?
    I have an Oracle 10g(10.2.3) database on RHEL4.3 system.
    I have lost all the current control files and all the online redo logs, archived redo logs and all other files are OK.
    Now I have to recovery this database using a backup control file.
    Can I recover the database without any data lost?

    If
    a) it was a Shutdown Abort or an Instance Crash (i.e. backgrounds died on detecting loss of redo logs),
    b) redo logs are lost
    c) data files are intact
    You'd have to
    a) Restore datafiles
    b) Do an Incomplete Recovery to the last available ArchiveLog

    Im just wondering what time they usually open the website for preorders if you live in the eastern time zone so I can quickly preorder.

    One is not beneficial over the other.  Go with whatever route you are most comfortable.  You will end up in the same place, but know this:  Whichever route you choose on Friday, it will be very congested with purchase traffic.
    On Friday, there will be a ton of postings here about purchase difficulties, delivery delays, when do I get my stuff, etc.  It's quite predictable.

  • Using time machine to recover iTunes database for metadata

    In short, when I go back beyond a week in time machine I cannot find any .itl or even any of the .itdb or .xml files on my mac that I can restore with time machine.  The only version that is there is for the current library which is missing 99.9% of the content.
    The context:
    1. I had itunes folder on my hard drive and an external with all of the content. Over the years the external must have been disconnected or what not as a sizeable media folder had also developed on the hard drive.
    2. In order to free up space on the hard drive I consolidated the media and moved the library to a second external that had much more free space.
    3. I ended up deleting the iTunes library on the hard disc on or around 6 april 2015. I believe I deleted the whole folder.
    no dramas - everything worked for weeks
    4. Today I noticed that the iTunes library was pretty much empty but for purchased music. All the podcasts, playlists and basically anything not purchased was gone.
    5. I look into the iTunes folder on the hard disc and I noticed that there is a music folder with two songs that my kid likes to play. It leo has all of the usual library xml files and the .itdb / .itl files (which to be honest I have never noticed before, I had only remembered ever seeing the .XML files).
    6. The "new" .itl file was created on Sunday 26 april at 5.30 pm.  The whole iTunes folder it sat in on my hard drive also did not exist before this time.
    7. If I use time machine and scroll back further in time than sunday there is no iTunes folder on my hard drive.
    8. I thought I would just need to find the .itl file that predated this new library that was created on Sunday. Trouble is I can't find one. On any disc, hard disc, the first external or the second external.  The only iTunes folder I can find with any of the database files needed is the one created on Sunday that is empty.
    9. I have all of the media organised on the second hard disc however I don't want to reimport and lose all the metadata that I have built up since 2001 at least.
    THE QUESTIONS
    A - where should I be looking for the old iTunes database files using time machine if I used the advanced features of iTunes to move the database to the new disc
    B - Can I perform some sort of system wide restore that would take me back in time to a point before last Sunday to get my old iTunes database back?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • How to find ...db recoverd till what time ?

    Dear All,
    I have a query.
    I have done incomplete recovery of database. How can i know till what time i have recovered database ?
    Please let me know any more information you need from my side.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Rajesh.

    You should be able to set RESETLOGS_CHANGE# in V$DATABASE (it would also be logged in the database instance's alert.log file when the OPEN RESETLOGS is issued).
    (Note : RESETLOGS_TIME in V$DATABASE shows when you did the Resetlogs, which isn't the same as the point in time to which you did the Recovery).
    You can then use the function TIMESTAMP_TO_SCN against the RESETLOGS_CHANGE# as in
    select scn_to_timestamp(resetlogs_change#) from v$database;Notes :
    a. The very act of OPEN RESETLOGS will itself increment the SCN very slightly to a value slightly higher than the last SCN actually recovered.
    b. The SCN_TO_TIMESTAMP function returns an approximation of the time, not the exact time.

  • Problem in recovering the database!!!

    Hi All,
    I created a new database and wanted to restore the backup of another database into it, I created the required tablespaces and started restore of backup from RMAN using
    run {
    allocate channel 'dev_0' type 'sbt_tape'
    parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=orcl,OB2BARLIST=DAILY_HISDBS01_ORACLE-DB_ONLINE_5W,OB2BARHOSTNAME=hisdbs01.kfmc.med)';
    restore controlfile from 'c-1179279249-20090511-02';
    alter database mount;
    release channel 'dev_0';
    The controlfile got restored successfully, then I tried to restore & recover the database
    run {
    allocate channel 'dev_0' type 'sbt_tape'
    parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=central,OB2BARLIST=DAILY_HISDBS01_ORACLE-DB_ONLINE_5W,OB2BARHOSTNAME=hisdbs01.kfmc.med)';
    restore database;
    recover database;
    release channel 'dev_0';
    The restore was successful, but when I tried to open the database with resetlogs option
    SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
    alter database open resetlogs

    PLEASE tell me how can I make the database work?

    Thanks Hemant !!!
    I restored the archivelogs using the script below
    run {
    allocate channel 'dev_0' type 'sbt_tape'
    parms 'ENV=(OB2BARTYPE=Oracle8,OB2APPNAME=central,OB2BARLIST=DAILY_HISDBS01_ORACLE-DB_ONLINE_5W,OB2BARHOSTNAME=hisdbs01.kfmc.med)';
    restore ARCHIVELOG FROM TIME 'SYSDATE-5' UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE';
    release channel 'dev_0';
    then recoverd the database and applied the requested archivelog file and opened the database with resetlogs, it is now successfully recovered upto the point I wanted it to be.

  • Recovering production database after a loss to Prod database server and SAN

    So I was asked this morning... can we recover our database if we lose both the database server and the SAN.
    A bit of information:
    Database: 10gR2
    Using ASM
    Backing up to ASM
    SAN is onsite
    My initial response was of course we backup at least twice a day, and then once a week move those backups to an offsite location.
    Then I started thinking about it some more. If we lose the SAN we have offsite backups of the entire SAN once a week so we could recover the SAN. If we were to lose the server we would lose the diskgroups where the backups are being stored.
    So my question is… and don’t laugh for me never thinking about it before please lol, but do I need to backup the ASM instance in order to be able to restore ASM to be able to get to my backups which are stored inside ASM diskgroups? If so do I need to do this old school by shutting it down and backing it up since there isn’t any archiving going on? If not does anyone recommend a certain way of going about this type of thing?
    Thanks in advance
    Luke

    Hi Luke,
    I think the answers to your questions are fluid, and can be stated as "it depends". If your SAN backup was created as a "snap", for example, a BCV on EMC systems, then likely you can get all your database in your ASM diskgroups. As long as all the disks in the diskgroups were snapped at the same time. Really, though, your best bet is always an RMAN backup which can be done even if your database is not in archive log mode. You can use rman to stop the database, restart it to mount mode and then back up the entire database, though I would suggest that if this is a production system that you do run in archive log mode.
    Cheers!

  • Can I recover photos I deleted with time capsule?

    Hi,
    I am trying to recover 1 year full of photos (aprox 10,000) from my macbook pro. the memory is almost running out of my hard drive and when this happened around last year I did a backup of my entire computer with an WD external HS, and thought I had saved them. Now I cannot find my old photos on the external HD. I do not know the path to the photos and it is not easy to find them by looking at backups through path names. They were on the original path of the default iPhoto library. From the library, I can only see a few photos, which are not the originals I loaded.
    Questions:
    1. Since I cannot find them on the HD (which is 3/4 full now) I wonder if I could recover them by using time capsute?
    2. I would also like to know if I use time capusule, and recover those files, do I loose the new ones?
    3. What is the path to identify where photos are in iPhoto?
    4. How do I only retrieve photos from the HD, I find it impossible to do this the way the data has been saved. I am trying to group all photos into anther HD.
    Thanks,
    Helene

    How was the backup to Time Capsule done?
    If done with Time Machine, you do realize that files backed up by Time Machine are not kept forever.
    How full is the drive on Time Capsule?
    1, The iPhoto library is usually kept in ~/Piucture/iPhoto Library which is a database. It is usually recommeded that you don't access this directly but use iPhoto.
    2, I would copy iPhoto Library to another place just in case.
    3, ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library unless you moved it some place else instead.
    4, The directions to move the iPhoto library are in this article
