Upadted to 2.2  ~ Now POP3 Account Shows Hundreds of 'Unread' Messages

Hi,
I just did a successful update to v 2,2, everything has gone just fine, except my Mail.
I have two mail accounts, A MobileMe (Which is working just fine) and a Pop3 account.
On my iMac, that account shows NO unread messages, but on my iphone, it says 271 are Unread. I started to delete the first 25 that came up (which are my most recent e-mails) but then it loads another 25 Unread messages.
This is a nightmare, every-time I delete 25, another lot pop-up, yet these messages are most definitely read on on my iMac.
Can someone suggest a remedy for this please?
All suggestions most welcome. ;

You updated to 2.2 from which firmware version?
Sounds like your POP account was recreated or reset as a newly created email account with your iPhone's mail client.
When creating a POP account with an email client, all messages that remain on the server will be downloaded as new unread messages, regardless if you have already downloaded and read the messages with the email client on your computer. This also means you didn't remove the messages from the server when downloaded by the email client used on your computer for accessing the account.
POP account mailboxes and messages are not kept synchronized with the server as is supported with an IMAP account. The only server stored mailbox that is available with a POP account when accessing the account with an email client is the account's Inbox mailbox, and any new messages received at the incoming mail server are downloaded by the email client used to access the account, with an option to remove the downloaded messages from the server when downloaded or leave the messages on the server for download with another email client used to access the account.
In this situation, it sounds like your POP account was recreated or reset on your iPhone as a new account, so all messages that remain on the server were downloaded as new messages again.
Marking a received message as read with an email client for a POP account does not mark the message as read with another email client used to access the account and vice-versa. This is possible with an IMAP account since all server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account.

The mail icon in the iPad dock shows 2,685 unread messages, in spite of the fact that all messages have been deleted from within mail. When you open Mail, the offending In Box shows the same number.  Looking in that mailbox, it says No Mail in the middle of the sidebar, but at the bottom it says "Updated Just Now, 2,685 Unread".
No iCloud or synching is involved.
I have already rebooted, to no avail.
Is there some way to force a re-download of Mail?

Yes, we tried that already, didn't work. We are lugging the whole iMac to the Genius Bar today, blech.

    Hello queenbea4,
You may need to place a tick mark for "Include when automatically checking for new messages" under the Advanced pane of your iCloud account's settings in Mail's Preferences. This can be found by going to the Mail menu, then to Preferences. Under the Accounts tab, choose your iCloud account, then the Advanced tab to the right.

  • Synchronisation of Mail with POP3 account

I have two email accounts, Mobile Me (now upgraded to iCloud) and a POP3 account from my ISP.  I had set things so that my MobileMe mailbox automatically read my POP3 account so that all incoming messages ended in my MobileMe mailbox.  This had the advantage of synchronisation between Macbook, iPhone and iPad.  The MobileMe/POP3 account synchronisation has recently stopped working.  I can't think of an event that might have caused this.
I want to investigate but I can't remember how I set it up in the first place.  Can anybody help?
I have a work around involving a rule in Mac Mail but this only works when Mail is running on the Mac whereas the previous solution didn't.

I don't know if they will give you the certificate... but this is the process for adding certs for securing emails.
    Otherwise, try Outlook 2011.

  • Can't get rid of unread mail icon--shows 2 unread messages but can't find any

I've got a smart mailbox that shows unread messages so I can easily see what new and unread mail I have.  The problem is it gives me the notification icon that indicates I have two unread messages, yet the mailbox does not show any messages as unread...  This isn't a huge problem, but the Mail icon in my dock always shows that I have new mail, and the notification icon is small enough that I can't always clearly see if it's the "usual 2" or a higher number.  What could be causing this and how do I either find the unread messages or get this icon reduced to where it only shows me REAL unread messages?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Leopard Mail Not Showing # Unread Messages in Dock Icon

For some inexplicable reason, my Leopard version of Mail has stopped showing unread message notifications. I still hear the mail ding, but there's no little red badge on the doc icon showing how many unread messages I have. And, yes, the "Dock unread count" is set to all mailboxes since I have multiple email accounts I check. Has anyone else had this problem and how do I fix it?

Jeff Greenberg's response was brilliant! Thanks Jeff.
I have had 2 "unread mail" items showing up for weeks and have been agonizing over what and where they were, how important the "unread" mail was, and what life experiences, deals, etc., I was missing out on. Creating a Smart Mailbox showing Unread mail worked - one caveat however: Add a second condition - that the the Unread Mail be in your INBOX (forgetting to add this condition this showed me HUNDREDS of unread mail items that resided in my OTHER Smart Mailboxes).
It worked. I found, read, and deleted my "unread mail" - Nothing important. Thanks again!

  • IPhone 4s Mail shows over 5000 unread emails, but only 4 show up in Inbox

On my wife's iPhone 4s, running the latest iOS, Mail shows over 5000 unread messages, but there are actually only 4 in the Inbox.  Anyone out there who has experienced this and have a fix?

You need to log into your email on a browser and delete them from there.

  • POP3 accounts and sent mail

Bit of a strange one here, so please bear with me ...
I am currently working with a guy who has two machines:
    1 - G4 PowerBook running on OS X 10.3.9, using Mail 1.3.11
    2 - G5 MacBook Pro running on OS X 10.5.2, using Mail 3.2
The G4 is his old machine which he used for everything, then got the G5 and moved everything on to there. Now I'm here, I use the G5 and he goes back to the G4.
The issue we're having is that he has the same email accounts set up on both machines, using POP3. Both have, as far as I can see, the same settings. Everything works fine on the G5, however all of the sent messages on the G4 (even older ones before the G5 came along) will not show and have the message:
+"The message from xxx@xxx <xxx@xxx> concerning "Subject" has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."+
Obviously the xxx is to hide his details.
Any idea why this is and how we can rectify it? His account is online as he receives and sends email through it.
    Thoughts?

FYI... G5 was an IBM chip, no Laptops had them, if it is an MBP, it has Intel chips in it!
My best guess is that at one time, the G4 was set to leave the mail on the server, but since, it has been downloaded or removed by the other same account on the MBP.

  • Only guest account shows up at start up on Macbook Air

Last night I was updating my Macbook Air, left it alone to do it's update, came back the next morning to turn it on and it was stuck at the apple logo.
After preforming a safe boot, it took me to the login page however only the guest account shows up.
I'm not sure if something went wrong during the update, it was at 70% battery life when i preformed the update so I didn't have it plugged into a power source like recommened, but i've never had a problem with it before.
I've tried enterng control+alt+command+enter which gives me the chance to put in a username and a password.
First I enter my name and passwor, but it was rejected.
So then I tried my apple ID and password, and it was rejected again.
I know I'm entering the right username/password, because it has been the same for my Air, Pro, and iMac.
Now I'm not sure if the account even exsists on my Macbook Air, but the guest account only allowed me to use safari.
I'm not able to access system prefences or anything.
I'm also having trouble with my iMac after updaiting to Mavericks, it work fine until the update and now it's saying my disk is corrupt, but that's a whole other story.
I'm just hoping to fix the problem at home because I really don't want to take two computers down to the Apple store.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

ok sorry everyone but i solved it myself but the solution is so nuts i've posted it here to help others who have the same problem.
to setup a comcast imap account on your iphone:
go to mail, contacts, etc in settings
    under accts, select add account
    select "other"
new screen, choose "add mail account"
now on the new acct screen you must enter your name, email address and password for your GMAIL acct ! (yes i said your gmail acct !, or some other acct with a NON comcast address).
    hit next
    then the acct verifies
when verified a screen will open with all the acct settings for this acct AND @ the top of the screen are the 2 buttons > imap or POP
select imap and THEN CHANGE ALL THE ACCOUNT information to the comcast account !
then hit next and the account will take a couple minutes to verify but it will verify and now you have a comcast imap acct set up on your iphone.  The problem must be that when the iphone sends the initial verify acct info to comcast (if you enter that information first) the comcast server is simply not setup yet to signal the iphone that there is an imap option.

  • How can I get my POP account showing in the inbox it's supposed to show in?

Hi-Until a couple of weeks ago all mail received from my IMAP and POP accounts would show up in the correct mailboxes in my Mail inbox list. (Only problem then was that sent mail would never show up in the sent mail folder--always stayed in the inbox.)
Now a new problem has happened----unless I go directly to my charter cable account (P0P account) to retrieve any mail sent to that particular address, the mail goes unnoticed by Mail on my MAC and nothing shows up in the inbox. But--- If I do a test to myself , sending an email to the POP address from my IMAP account from my MAcMAil, my IMAP account will show the email in the inbox of the IMAP account I sent it from as if I'd mailed it to that account. How can I get my POP account showing in the Inbox? And, any suggestions for a fix to getting the "sent" mail to show in the "sent" folder would also be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Control click in the tool bar area and customize.

    You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

  • I am at a loss: bcc removal and messages appearing on other POP3 accounts!

    Greetings!
2 problems with Mail (version 4.2 1077 - Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.2)
    1. For the life of me, I do recall at some point recently making my mail bcc to myself (I just wanted to make sure of what some attachments looked like to their destination). Works, BUT now I am not sure how to remove that automatic bcc without having to do it "manually" everytime I send mail!
    2. I have now for a while (and since way BEFORE I effected the automatic bcc to myself) had my messages - FROM my MobileMe address, sent from my MacBookPro - appear in an unrelated POP3 mail account on my other computers, Windows machines (Windows 7using Windows Live Mail, Windows XP using Outlook Express). It s totally eerie: my Mac (MobileMe) Mail seems to be cc'd to that POP3 account. I am wondering HOW I got into that fix.. My fault I am sure. Can't find how to UNDO it...
    Help will be appreciated!
