Upconvert Fuzziness

Hello Group,
Question on an upconvert procedure that has me a little confused.
A show will be shot on the HVX200 using some DVCPROHD to FireStore for slo-mo and beauty shots, and using MiniDV for the rest. They would, of course, like to send the whole thing out as DVCPROHD (apparently the end result will be broadcast and they want it at 720p).
Now, 720p24 is obviously 23.98 and the HVX200 in SD can do 24p or 24pa. If I capture EVERYTHING as 720p24 using my Kona card, shouldn't the DP plan to use 24pa for the SD stuff so the framerates will match? I am a little confused because I know that when we master to tape, pulldown will be added back in anyway, but editing the two different framerates could be problematic...right?
Thanks In Advance!
~Athen

i've a buddy who uses an hvx and a firestore. he's not been able to get overcranked video to capture to firestore. confirm that you can do this.
dvcpro hd for slo mo and beauty but the rest on mini-dv, this makes no sense.
but, as i don't know the reasons there are two options that i can see: downconvert in camera the dvcpro hd and spit it out as dv25 so there you have the same flavour of video to work with.
i was reading a thread from paul from apple somewhere the past couple of days and he was extolling the virtues of format conversion within compressor. do a short test of "uprezzing" dv25 to dvcpro hd 720p24 and see what it looks like. most likely it'll be horrendous but ya won't know until ya test. then try the other way and see what happens.
i for one will be very glad when there is one tv format........yeah, i'll keep dreaming.

  • Upconverting SD to HD

We use 3 Apple Cineman displays for Keynote presentations. We shoot a lot of internal videos in miniDV for now, until we get a high end Panasonic camera w/ P2 Card. Anyway, whats the best way to upconvert footage from miniDV to HD sizes like 1440x1080. With Keynote, we the slides and type look amazing at this resolution, but obviously the video does not due to the 720x480 DV size. Should I use compressor to upconvert? And if so, how should I set it up? Use the Frame Controls and Geometry tabs to do so? I know that won't be true hiDef video, only in pixel size, but how will the video look? Has anyone out there done this yet? Does the video look okay, or really crappy?
Also, we are looking the either a Kona Card or AJA IO or IO HD, how will this help with the conversion process? Will this take the place of Compressor? Or is the IO only for input and not used for output like Compressor is? Any thoughs.
Sorry for the length, but many questions I have, yes!

You have options when you do an upconversion. You can either pillarbox the entire image, meaning that you'll have black bars on the sides of a 4:3 picture, or you can do an extraction of approx. 1/3 of the 4:3 frame to fill a 16:9 frame, or you can stretch to fill the screen. The most common extraction is a center cut, but you could also do a top or bottom cut if the important picture information is in one of those areas of the frame. I've done upconversion through Compressor with decent results. I've also had upconversion done via Teranex and I've used a Panasonic AJ1200 deck to do upconversion. All three produced similar results. The final image will be a little fuzzy.
I personally think that extractions look better than pillarboxing or stretching. Go with Compressor for the cheapest results, just keep in mind that render times can be very long when you are upconverting footage.
Shane and I worked on a show last year that had a ton of upconverted footage. We did a lot of the upconversions in Compressor. He used to have the droplets that we made posted on his site, but I'm not sure where you can find them now. Maybe he'll pop in with a link.

  • ITunes 10.6 store blurry/fuzzy text?

I am using Windows 7 X64 SP1 with the latest updates from Microsoft.
I am currently using a Nvidia GTX 460 graphics card, with the latest Nvidia drivers.
I have tried repeatedly to reset iTunes store cache, emptied Windows temp files, does repair options on both iTunes as well as Quicktime.
I have also tried resetting both ClearType (including trying it turned off completely), and reset video card driver settings.
I have tried to re-install both iTunes and Quicktime. I even uninstalled iCloud, and Safari. Still no effective change or improvement in any of those cases.
Yet, the problem still remains. Many times when I try to browse the iTunes store, the text is very blurry and fuzzy and difficult to read. Sometimes the text becomes completely unreadable.
    Anyone else have similar experiences?
Anyone know of a workaround, or should I just delete both iTunes and quicktime, and go back to iTunes 10.5 until their is a fix? It all started with the latest iTunes update that supposedly changes how it displays artwork and things. I can't tell any real difference between 10.5 and 10.6 in the case of artwork, but the display of text is getting very frustrating.

Ha! Issue solved. The track not showing the arrows was a PDF in iTunes. All is well.

  • Pavillion m9077c lockup and fuzzy screen

My computer locks up with a fuzzy screen
I have an HP Pavilion m9077c-b quad core computer running Windows 8.1.  It has an Nvidia GeForce8500GT video card and I suspect it is going bad, but haven’t convinced myself that it is the problem.
    I checked the following:
    Overheating (Checked with SpeedFan Program)
    GPU temperature initially 79° C
After blowing out the case, temperatures ran in the 72-75°C range – still lock ups
With fan blowing into the case and the temperature at ~67°C, still locked up.
All 3 fans, PS, GPU and case fans are running
Note – GPU Temperature may be slightly high, but seem to be within specs for Nvidia
    Drivers
    Updated Nvidia driver
Installed a Nvidia hotfix dated 4/15/14 – Still locked up
Other pertinent drivers seem to be up to date
In NORMALmode, had lockups running the following, mostly individually, but sometimes in combo:
    File Exp
    MS Outlook
    lorer & Adobe PDF
    MS Digital Image
    Internet Explorer
    Web Camera
    MS Word
Turbocad (3D rendering program like Autocad)
In SAFE MODE, ran most of the above overnight with no problems (but no video card?)
In SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, ran most of these programs for 8 hours with no lockupsl
    Video Card
Using HP’s Support Assistant program Video Check
           i.      Lock ups in SELECTIVE START UP – runs to 56% & 90% then locks up
ii.      Lock ups in SELECTIVE START UP with networking
iii.      Runs in SAFE BOOT WITH NETWORKING -- no problems (but doesn’t check the GPU?)
Ran dxdiag in SELECTIVE START UP with no problems detected
    Motherboard & CPU – tested with HotCPUTester4Pro
In SELECTIVE START UP – ran diagnostic test for 5 hours with no problems
In SAFE BOOT WITH NETWORKING -- ran diagnostic test for 5 hours with no problems
Disk Drive – ran Scandisk with no problems detected
Power Supply -  changed out ~2 years ago with a premium power supply.  600W Thermaltake.
Any thoughts on what might be causing the problems, and if it is the video card, is there a better way to confirm it is the source?

Yes, it definitely could be significant.  Do you have a friend who could loan you a video card to see if it works?  This would be helpful.

the query is working accurately technically
but is there any way to get 10578 on top
    the requirement is
    ---first
    solar water heater
    solar water heater dealers
    solar water heater manufacturers
    solar water heater distributors
    solar water heater sales
solar water heater repairs and servicing
    ---followed by
SOLAR WATER HEATER REPAIRS & SERVICES-TATA SOLAR
    SOLAR WATER HEATER-KAMAL SOLAR
SOLAR WATER HEATER DEALERS-TATA BP SOLAR   etc etc
so if the end user types in "solar water" the top row would have a row from the table that has what the end user has entered followed by "dealers" or "manufacturers" or "distributors" or "sales" or "repairs and servicing"
so if a row contains "solar water dealer" it shows up on top
or(if "solar water dealer" is not there and "solar water manufacturers" or  "solar water distributors" etc is not present)
a row from the table that has what the end user has entered PLUS "heater" followed by "dealers" or "manufacturers" or "distributors" or "sales" or "repairs and servicing"
so "solar water heater dealers" shows up on top
these words - "dealers" , "manufacturers" , "distributors" , "sales" , "repairs and servicing"  etc remain constant

I Have a MacBook Pro i7 2011 it stays on for about 4 hours then the screen go's all fuzzy and I have to turn it off by the power button has any body else had this problem thanks mike

My guess would also be a failling connection between your logicboard and your GPU. See 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card
For most users it starts with some random crashes and freezes like you describe it. And then it just gets worse and worse. There are still no "good" solutions, sadly. This is a hardware problem from the production.

  • Design Problem When SSIS Get String From Web to Do Fuzzy Lookup

    Hi!
In my previous post Search Data by Fuzzy Lookup in Real Time
Scenario, I've tested required functions to build a sample website and SSIS, now it's time to polish my design. Since user will query a name from Web, SSIS is supposed to get a string to do
Fuzzy Lookup.  I wonder how I can design to let fuzzy lookup consume String as input instead of a structure (like OLE DB, EXCEL, Flat File, etc ) .
Now I use table as datasource to do a fake input. The SQL_CMD variable will dynamically be replaced from Web input. It seems Fuzzy Lookup component needs a structure to be an input.
Do you have any design idea for my scenario ?  Thank you!

How are you executing the fuzzy lookup package ? Is it using command line or using asp.net code ?
In SSIS package we can create variables and assign any strings to these variables while running the ssis package in asp.net.
    Refer
    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/28096/Excecute-SSIS-package-DTSX-from-ASP-Net
Also have you gone through SOUNDEX option of TSQL

  • Keynote to iMovie '09 Text is Fuzzy at Full Screen View

I haven't seen any postings like this so I'm starting a new thread...
I have a keynote with mostly text and transitions (slide size1024x768) I exported to QT (custom full size, H.264, 30 frame rate, 24 key frame rate, data rate of automatic and compression quality at best.)
I import this mov into iMovie where I'm adding some audio. I now need to export the movie to play from a Windows machine (that has QuickTime) onto a HDTV.
I've been trying all sorts of export options from iMovie but the quality of the text gets very fuzzy when I view the exported movie in full screen on my iMac. What settings should I be trying to ensure I'm getting the best quality movie on the HDTV playing from QuickTime.

Thanks for your reply AppleMan1958. Unforunately the playback problem was only experienced in the project described, - all other projects played fine....and I tried a lot of different ways to do it...so I really believe the whole project, including the playback (which did not work in the editing window in the right hand corner either, -nothing was shown there and the red marker line would not move across the project) just suddenly become totally corrupt...However, after deleting the project as described above and installing imovie11 I have done the whole thing over again and completed the project without problems this time.
But thanks for the tip anyway!

  • Issues: extremely slow start up, occasional green fuzzy screen, doesn't always hibernate and overheats

First off, I should say that I'm not the type of person to shutdown my computer. If anything, I shut it to hiberate. I'm not sure if that's bad pratice or if that's what lead to this over time.. So here's what happens.. Today, I was working away and all of a sudden a fuzzy screen comes up with a little bit of green and then a beeping sound. So I shut it off. This is rare, sometimes the fuzzy screen comes up for a second randomly or when I open my computer from hiberate mode or when I'm just using the computer.
When I turn my computer on,
    1. sometimes the 'on' button doesn't work and it takes a few tries (however this hasn't happened in the past few weeks. *knock on wood*)
Once the computer is on the blue screen comes up:
    2. which stays on for anywhere from 5-20 minutes.
    3. Log in appears with the cursor blinking but I actually can't type anything.. It lags behind sometimes another 20 minutes before my password appears and I could log on.
Checking the message board for similar questions it was recommended that I update the software.
I've tried to get Mavericks on here but I get an error message when it tries to restart the computer and never does so successfully on its own.
I've helped it along and was able to attempt at installing it but I waited a least an hour for it to 'find my disks' with no luck I went the disk utility repair route istead of time machine backup which couldn't find my external or anything for that matter.
The error message I got back was:
invalid block count It should be 21066078 instead of 21066076. Found corrupt needs to be repaired.
Any thoughts or advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Below is my EtreCheck.

    Simska,
regarding the overheating, you can try resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller.
Regarding the invalid block count, you should boot from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro, run Disk Utility from it (via the Utilities menu in the menu bar), and select Repair Disk for your internal disk.
After your disk is repaired, exit Disk Utility and restart from your internal disk. When you log in, you should uninstall your installed version of iPhoto Photocast — it was written to work with the Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) SDK, but you have Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8) installed, so it’s not supported under Snow Leopard. Install in its place an older version of iPhoto Photocast which is compatible with Snow Leopard. You also have an outdated version of Silverlight installed — you can download the most recent version from here.

  • Resolution of MacBook Pro display - always this fuzzy??

I should have done my homework, but...
I'm very sensitive to the fuzziness of the MacBook Pro display (especially the nearly grey and poorly defined letters on Word) and, to tell the truth, it's making my stomach turn and giving me a headache. I just received this computer through work, can't return it, and I'm stuck with it for three years now. what can I do or purchase to make the display CRYSTAL CLEAR (as in laser print quality)?
Will an external monitor help? Which one?
How can my iPod touch look so brilliant and this $2,500 laptop so archaic?
Thanks for any and all help,
    Ants

The reason your iPod Touch looks sharper is that it has a much higher pixel density than the MBP. Your iPod's screen is 163 ppi (pixels per inch) versus 110 ppi for the MBP. However, if it looks very fuzzy, I would agree with the other responder that your resolution isn't set to the screen's native resolution (1440 x 900) or that you are zoomed in (press control and scroll down on your mouse scroll wheel or two-fingered scroll on with the trackpad).

  • Macbook pro 13' 2011 external diaplay fuzzy font

    Hi,
I connected the mbp thru displayport-vga to my DELL SP2208WFP and the font of the applications on DELL monitor is fuzzy. I use native resolution for the monitor and also tried font smoothing through terminal commands but nothing works.
Similar problems I found here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1111167
Is there any solution to this problem?

The original post states he is connecting using VGA.

  • DVI monitor fuzzy sometimes when waking from sleep

    Hi there,
I have a new Samsung SyncMaster P2350 connected via MiniDisplayPort > DVI adapter. Works great 90% of the time.
I use the monitor primarily as my main and have the MBP lid closed.
Sometimes when waking the MBP by moving the mouse the screen will come back up all fuzzy (much like an old television on no channel). I then turn the monitor off and back on and the picture returns..!
I know this is not the monitor or the adapter itself as a friend came over a few weeks ago with his adapter and we connected the MBP to my Panasonic Plasma and initially had the same problem.
Has anyone else experienced this? The fuzzy colours as mainly made up of purples, blacks and whites.
    Thanks,
    Brett

The weird thing is that every morning, when I move my mouse to wake the computer, both displays go from black to show the desktop but the second display immediately goes back to black. Unplugging it and plugging it back in eventually works after multiple trys. Restarting the computer sometimes works but not always.
The only other major change to my computer before this started happening is that I installed Leopard.
So far I've tried setting my Macbook Pro not to go to sleep but that didn't change anything.
Should I try setting my displays not to go to sleep either? I haven't tried that because Energy Saver warned me that it could reduce the lifespan of the display.

  • Ipod to tv white/black fuzzy lines

please help and advise if im doing something wrong.i have the ipod setting on tv set to on,set at pal(have tried ntsc still same)when i plug ipod into tv to watch video/photos all i get is black/white fuzzy lines across screen, thought at first cable faulty but have now tried a second cable still the same issue.what am i doing wrong has anyone had same problem and sorted it.please advise...thanks

there will always be ways to get around purchasing something from apple for those who are so inclined. the link i included above shows the difference in wiring, and sure, you can swap / rewire / cut / change your existing cables if you like. it shows you how to wire to an ibook av cable which is the same as a standard DV from what i understand. it's your ipod, and you can plug whatever you like in it.
me, i personally like to use things the way they are intended, and unless there is a third party, informally endorsed version that does it better, i like to kee it in the family. the ipod is (as the rest of the apple family) an expression of style and a design statement. it's for the same reason i wouldn't want to have a black cord connecting my ears to my music - the white cord(s) are part of the (admittedly grandiose) ipod brand and culture. i don't only use mine in my living room, but for presentations in boardrooms too, and the entire package from my pocket is more impressive than an old lumpy laptop...
it's personal preference. but IMHO, if you can spring for the apple AV's, i would do it...

  • I export from final cut pro 7 to idvd everything comes out fuzzy on the dvd

I film using a canon fs10. I edit in final cut pro 7, then export to quicktime format, then I burn the dvd using idvd. But the final product always comes out blurry and fuzzy. I can't see what I am doing wrong. Is it because I am not filming in HD?

Using iMovie, for one, is capturing your files to a codec other than one FCP wants to work with. You would be better off dragging and dropping the files from the camera to a folder on an external drive and converting the footage with MPEG Streamclip to whatever codec you want to work in.
Using iDVD to compress and author the dvd takes away any control you have over the compression settings for the project.
You'd be well off getting a FCP training book from someplace like Peachpit Press, or a training dvd from someone here or out there who produces them.

  • [need help with animated gif - shows up fuzzy on IE]

    Hi,
I created an animated gif in photoshop cs3 with combination of text and images in Mac.  For some reason, the text on the banner looks fuzzy on Internet Explorer. Do any of you know what is wrong with the banner?  Can anyone help me on this?
    Thanks

How does it look in Firefox on Windows? By only testing one browser on Windows, you cannot determine if it is a matter of the browser or the overall settings for the computer.
Do you have a page to share so that we can see the fuzziness or can you post the GIF file here?
