Update 10.4.8 and X11

I just did the update and now I can't get X11 to work properly. X11 itself seems to open up, but then it won't run the application that I run through X11. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi all,
some days ago, there has been another update to X11 that has solved the problems I had with using OpenOffice.org.
However, in the meantime, I have bought iWorks, and I don't regret that step: in contrast to OpenOffice.org, it really works together with the OS (functionality and look&feel) and the options my MacBook offers, e.g. switching transparencies in Keynote using the remote control.
Still, it is very usefull to have OpenOffice.org running again, as I need it to open Excel documents and – the few times I have to do that – doing a spreadsheet calculation on my own.
Nevertheless, thanks for the advice you provided.
Yours sincerely,
Lorenz

  • Using GIMP and X11

I originally posted this elsewhere in discussions; however this may be a better placement for it.
I use GIMP which requires X11 and recently it has stopped working. I rolled back to an older version of GIMP, installed the Xll upgrade on the Leopard DVD but all to no avail. Right now, GIMP crashes and X11 won't even start when I double click from the applications/utilities folder.
Thanks in advance for any help that any may provide.

Did this coincide with any other changes? (e.g. OS update, software changes...)
I rolled back to an older version of GIMP,
So which versions have you tried? Which package are you using? (There are various pre-packaged versions of GIMP for OS X from different groups.)
installed the Xll upgrade on the Leopard DVD but all to no avail.
So which version of X11 were you using before if not the one from the DVD? There may be updates to this version available from Apple. Is it possible you actually installed the DVD version over the top of a later version? /Library/Receipts may show packages installed for X11 if they were separate packages and not part of more general updates.

The former is expected given the latter. What exactly happens when you try to open X11? Do you see any useful messages in the log files? (Look at system.log and console.log using /Applications/Utilities/Console and/or open X11 from Terminal and see what error messages you get.)

  • OS X 10.6.4 update broke Eclipse, Gimp and Inkescape

    Hi,
after I took the latest update, the eclipse application won't start unless I invoke it from the terminal with open Eclipse.app. Here is the message:
A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse.
    No Java virtual machine
was found after searching the following locations:
    /Users/****/Eclipse.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/bin/java
    java in your current PATH
Also, both Gimp and Inkscape won't start, neither from terminal nor Finder. Inkscape displays the message:
    "Failed to start X11
Inkscape.app requires Apple's X11, which is freely downloadable from Apple's website for Panther (10.3.x) users and available as an optional install from the installation DVD for Tiger (10.4.x) users.
Please install X11 and restart Inkscape"
When I first installed Inkscape I never had to install X11 myself, and X11 actually seems to be installed since I can see it's icon on the Dock when it tries to launch the application, closing after a few seconds.
Does anyboady have any idea about that?
    Thanks,

What kinds of 3rd party software have you installed? Xquartz? MacPorts? Fink?
Try with a new account. It may just be preferences files and/or dotfiles.

  • Using aquamace and X11

I have just managed to set up aquamacs to my liking, I like the total customisability.
Anyway, I was playing around remotly logging onto my work computer. I would like to remotly log on and use aquamacs on my local computer to edit files on the remote machine. How can I set it up to so this?
I also noticed that root uses emacs that comes Mac OSX, is there a way to change this too?
    Thanks

  • BIOS updating issue on Satellite 3000 -X11

    Hello,
I found a lot of people complaining of this same issue.
I found no solution posted. Most threads (now locked) ended with people saying "Don't update your bios if it is running okay"
This computer is not running okay and I would like to update the BIOS.
The issue is that the bios update says it failed due to the update not being for this model of computer.
The laptop is a Satellite 3000-X11. I have downloaded the v1.6 BIOS update for the Satellite 3000-X11
So I am not sure why it makes this complaint.
Please advise if there is something more I can do here.
Also please know the BIOS update procedure I followed was exactly per the instructions.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

(sorry about the name change. Somehow ended up with two profiles when I accessed the forums via a different country site)
As per my original post... the computer does NOT run okay.
That is why I wish to try updating the BIOS.
It has issues with it not starting or starting but with a screen that is so dimmed it looks blank. Looking really hard at it I can see it is not blank, just VERY VERY dim.
I wish to update the BIOS just in case that fixes things.
The BIOS update complains that the PC is not the right model for this update, when it is the right model.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

  • Downloading the 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and it seems stuck at "registering updated components". It's running but I've had "about a minute" left for 30 minutes now

Trying to download the 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and it seems stuck at "Registering updated components". It's been saying it has "about a minute" left for at least a half hour. What do I do?

Try downloading it from the Apple site.  Set Safari to download to the desk top:Safari preferences>general>save downloads to desktop.  Download to desktop, and run the installer:

  • Macbook 2.4 2008 after update 10.6.8 and firmware, won't fully boot

Weird problem after updating to 10.6.8 from 10.6.0 (fresh install).
I went thru Software Update, it downloaded 10.6.8 and the other updates. It also found that I needed a Firmware Update, which I also choose to install.
The updates went thru okay, including the Firmware. Everything went exactly as it should. The machine booted as per normal.
Afterwards, I checked that it had updated normally to 10.6.8 and everything checked out okay.
I left the Macbook plugged in and in Sleep. It was like this for probably 24 hours. NO BATTERY INSTALLED (don't know if this could be a problem, but I don't see how). I just came back now to find that I can't get back to the desktop from Sleep, nor can I boot to the desktop.
    Specifically, here's what I see:
    - first, on trying to Wake from Sleep, the screen remained black. The Superdrive spun up, the white light at the front of the Macbook was pulsing. But no desktop.
    - I then held the Power button till it shut down. Then rebooted. And here's what I got:
    a) no startup chime
    b) I could Superdrive and fans and HD spin up
    c) the display turned on, but didn't show the startup screen, no Apple logo, etc. It just went to the Desktop in about 10-15 seconds.
    d) on the Desktop I can see:
    - the Desktop background
    - the Disk Utility window open to Repair Permissions, which was the last thing I'd done on the Macbook (permissions checked out okay)
    - and THIS: I've never seen it before, but the Desktop is a bit "fuzzy", I can see the background and the Disk Utility window though, as well as a NUMBER OF SHORT BARS towards the bottom of the screen, and there's a BAR BY BAR PROGRESS from left to right (the first bar is filled in, then the second, etc.), BUT the progress DOESN'T make it to the last bar before the SCREEN GOES BLACK AGAIN  (*sorry for the caps, but I'm trying to highlight the salient parts).
    Any ideas?
Is this somehow related to the Firmware update? I remember that the Macbook booted fine after the Firmware update, the long horizontal progress bar was filled in as normal and got to the end; IIRC the Macbook then booted fine. I believe it was at this point that I repaired Permissions. Then left the Macbook, only to return to find it as it is now.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Update:
Installed 10.6 and did all the updates, am now using it with an external monitor. Working fine as a Mini, but a real bummer re. the black or blue screen.
Without external monitor connected, I get this:
    - I can boot, with startup chime, from DVD or external hard disk, after holding Option at startup and choosing bootable volume on screen; I can also boot from the DVD by holding down C key
    - When I boot, the startup chime doesn't sound right away, as there's a short delay; in that time (a few seconds), the LED light at the front of the Macbook FLASHES 5 TIMES; there are NO error beep sounds
    - The boot screen starts up, I get Apple logo and spinning wheel, and at about the usual point where the screen goes blue for a couple seconds, before the Macbook boots to the desktop, the screen goes black
    - The Macbook seems to go to Sleep, with the screen black; the front light pulses
    - I can wake the Macbook from Sleep by pressing a key
    - Previously, after waking from Sleep, the Macbook went to the desktop -> in other words, the Macbook completed startup with the black screen;
    - When the Macbook woke from Sleep, there was a slight delay of a few seconds before the Trackpad and Keyboard became active; I then had a few seconds to use the Trackpad before the screen went black again, and the Macbook went back to Sleep
    - Now, though, when I wake it from Sleep, I get a Blue Screen, and the screen stays blue; i.e., doesn't turn black and the Macbook doesn't sleep
All of this refers to booting the Macbook without an external monitor connected.
When booting with an external monitor, everything works normally.
    POINTS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST:
    1) all of this happened from the time I updated the Firmware, as per Software Update
    2) the screen works during the boot process, then goes black
    3) boot completes even with black screen
    4) the screen works for a 10 seconds when Macbook wakes from Sleep, then goes black again
    5) now, the screen goes blue - and stays there - when the Macbook wakes from Sleep
    6) Macbook works normally with external monitor; the Macbook's internal display is not recognized when an external monitor is connected; the iSight camera is not recognized
    So, what the heck happened?
I can understand the internal display and/or onboard video getting broken, but then it should simply not work at all, right? How is it that it works "partially" or "temporarily", during boot and when waking from Sleep, before going black?
What is with the 5 flashing LEDs at boot or when waking from Sleep? (I can't find any info concerning the Macbook and 5 flashing LEDs, but only concerning the Macbook Air, and it refers to a battery problem).

  • I would like to be able to download updates for my Iphone and Ipad on my work computer but my home computer has all of my music on Itunes.  How do i downlaod updates at work without deleting all of the music which is stored on my home computer/Itunes?

I would like to be able to download software updates on my Iphone and Ipad at work without erasing my music.  My home computer/Itunes has all of my music saved.  is there a way to use two computers w/o erasing information?  Or can i transfer the music from my Iphone to my work computer?

    - An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library. Yu can however manage music and videos among different computers by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    - To change syncing computer, move all the media to compute r#2
    - Connect the iPod to #2 and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note tha the iPod backup the iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.

    Help

I am six minutes into the video and while Jan is doing a great (terrific, actually) job of explaining things I already know, she has yet to explain the subject issue. So I am unsure what "at the beginning" means... is there a time-marker for the point you are referring to?
Anyway, I have Lightroom v5.5 and Photoshop CC 2014 installed on two machines -- a Win v8.0 Laptop and a Win v8.1 Desktop. Adobe Camera Raw (in Photoshop) is v8.5 on the Laptop and v8.2 on the Desktop. Therefore when I "edit in" in Photoshop on the Desktop I, too, get the OP's error message. When I use the "Update" option under the "Help" menu in Photoshop (on the Desktop), I am told that all the programs are "Up-to-date."
Does anyone know how to force an ACR update? In other words is there an "install" process somewhere?
Edit: Jan's explanation of the error message starts a the 31:50 mark. It does not, however, answer my question about updating Photoshop CC 2014.

  • Apple Releases Security Update 2006-004 (PowerPC and Intel)

    From Macfixit................
Apple has released Security Update 2006-004 for Mac OS X in both PowerPC and Intel versions. This update requires Mac OS X 10.4.7 for either PowerPC or Intel, Mac OS X 10.3.9 or Mac OS X 10.3.9 Server.
This is the fourth major standalone security update for Mac OS X released this year.
Update procedure recommendation First, avoid performing any other operations (in Mac OS X or third-party applications) while the update process is occurring. In addition, before installing this security update, make sure all Apple-installed applications and utilities are in their original locations. Moving one of these applications to a different location on your hard drive can lead to an incomplete update. Also, disconnect any FireWire/USB devices before applying the update (except for your startup drive, if it is FireWire or USB, and your keyboard/mouse), then re-connect the devices one by one (checking for issues created by any particular device) after the update process is complete and the system has restarted.
    Enhancements in this release
Of most interest to general end-users:
a fix that prevents maliciously crafted Zip archives from causing condition where arbitrary code can be execute. In other words, prior to Security Update 2006-004 you could download a specially crafted file ending in .zip from a Web site or other location, and it could trigger the execution of malicious code.
a fix that disallows maliciously crafted Canon RAW images from creating a buffer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. Prior to Security Update 2006-004, you could download or otherwise receive a Canon RAW file that could allow execution of malicious code on your system.
similar to the above, a fix that prevents maliciously crafted GIF images from causing an integer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution.
new download validation that will catch certain HTML files defined by Safari as "safe" that may actually contain malicious JavaScript code. After applying Security Update 2006-004, these files will not be automatically opened.
Protection against maliciously crafted HTML documents that can also open the door for arbitrary code execution by accessing deallocated objects.
A full list of enhancements is as follows:
    AFP Server
An issue in the AFP server allows search results to include files and folders for which the user performing the search has no access. This may lead to information disclosure if the names themselves are sensitive information. If the permissions of the items allow it, the contents may also be accessible. This update addresses the issue in Mac OS X v10.3.9 by ensuring that search results only include items for which the user is authorized. For Mac OS X v10.4 systems, the issue was addressed in Mac OS X v10.4.7. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9:
The AFP server contains an integer overflow that can be triggered by an authenticated user. A malicious user with access to the AFP server may be able to cause a denial of service attack or arbitrary code execution with system privileges. The AFP server is not enabled by default on Mac OS X. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation. Credit to Dino Dai Zovi of Matasano Security for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
On Mac OS X Server, the AFP server supports reconnection of file sharing sessions after a network outage. The storage of reconnect keys is world-readable. It may be possible for an authenticated local user to read the reconnect keys, use them to impersonate another user over AFP, and access files or folders with the privileges of the impersonated user. This update addresses the issue by protecting the reconnect keys with appropriate file system permissions. This issue only affects Mac OS X Server. Available for: Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
An unchecked error condition exists in the AFP server that may lead to a crash. By carefully crafting an invalid AFP request, an attacker may be able to trigger this condition and cause a denial of service. This update addresses the issue by handling the formerly unchecked error condition. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Bluetooth
The security of the Bluetooth Setup Assistant has been improved in this update for Mac OS X v10.4.7. The length of the automatically generated passkey used for pairing has been increased from six characters to eight characters. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Bom
An issue in Bom's compression state handling may cause heap corruption. By carefully crafting a corrupt Zip archive and persuading a victim to open it, an attacker may be able to trigger this condition which could lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. Note that Safari will automatically open archives when "Open `safe' files after downloading" is enabled. This update addresses the issue by properly handling such malformed Zip archives. Credit to Tom Ferris of Security-Protocols.com for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    DHCP
A stack buffer overflow exists in bootpd's request processing. By carefully crafting a malicious BOOTP request, a remote attacker may be able to trigger the overflow and cause arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the system. Note that bootpd is not enabled by default in Mac OS X, and must be manually configured in order to be enabled. This update addresses the issue by performing additional bounds checking. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    dyld
Malicious local system users may specify dynamic linker options that cause output to standard error. This output contains informational content and potentially user-specified content. As a result, privileged applications that parse or reuse standard error may be influenced inappropriately. This update addresses the issue by ignoring the problematic dynamic linker options in privileged applications. Credit to Neil Archibald of Suresec LTD for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
An improperly handled condition in the dynamic linker may lead to including dangerous paths when searching for libraries to load into privileged applications. As a result, malicious local users may cause the dynamic linker to load and execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges. This update addresses the issue by properly selecting search paths when executing privileged applications. Credit to Neil Archibald of Suresec LTD for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    fetchmail
Several issues in the fetchmail utility were discovered. The most serious issue could lead to arbitrary code execution when fetching mail from a malicious POP3 mail server. All issues are described at the fetchmail website (fetchmail.berlios.de). This update addresses the issues by updating fetchmail to version 6.3.4. In addition, fetchmail is no longer distributed as a privileged utility. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    gunzip
A race condition may allow a malicious local user to modify the permissions of files owned by another user executing gunzip. This issue is only exploitable when executing gunzip on files in directories that are modifiable by other users. This update addresses the issue by properly handling files while decompressing. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
A directory traversal vulnerability is present in the command line utility gunzip when it is used with the non-default "-N" option. By carefully crafting a malicious compressed file and persuading a user to open it with "gunzip -N", an attacker may replace or create arbitrary files with the privileges of the victim. This update addresses the issue by properly stripping paths from files when decompressing. Available for: Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    Image RAW
By carefully crafting a corrupt Canon RAW image, an attacker can trigger a buffer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Canon RAW images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
    ImageIO
By carefully crafting a corrupt Radiance image, an attacker can trigger an integer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of Radiance images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
By carefully crafting a corrupt GIF image, an attacker can trigger an undetected memory allocation failure which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of GIF images. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7.
By carefully crafting a corrupt GIF image, an attacker can trigger an integer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. LaunchServices
Download Validation may erroneously identify certain files containing HTML as "safe". If such a file is downloaded in Safari and Safari's "Open `safe' files after downloading" option is enabled, the HTML document will automatically be opened from a local URI. This would allow any JavaScript code embedded in the document to bypass access restrictions normally imposed on remote content. This update provides additional checks to identify potentially malicious file types so that they are not automatically opened. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    OpenSSH
Attempting to log in to an OpenSSH server ("Remote Login") using a nonexistent account causes the authentication process to hang. An attacker can exploit this behavior to detect the existence of a particular account. A large number of such attempts may lead to a denial of service. This update addresses the issue by properly handling attempted logins by nonexistent users. This issue does not affect systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4. Credit to Rob Middleton of the Centenary Institute (Sydney, Australia) for reporting this issue. Available for: Mac OS X v10.4.7, Mac OS X Server v10.4.7
    telnet
When connected to a TELNET server, the client may send the contents of arbitrary environment variables to the server if the server requests them. Some environment variables may contain sensitive information that should not be sent over the network. This update addresses the issue by ensuring that only non-sensitive variables and variables that the user has explicitly requested are are shared with the server. WebKit
A maliciously-crafted HTML document could cause a previously deallocated object to be accessed. This may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. Buffer overflows were discovered in TIFF tag handling (CVE-2006-3459, CVE-2006-3465), the TIFF PixarLog decoder (CVE-2006-3461), and the TIFF NeXT RLE decoder (CVE-2006-3462). By carefully crafting a corrupt TIFF image, an attacker can trigger a buffer overflow which may lead to an application crash or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of TIFF images. Systems prior to Mac OS X v10.4 are affected only by the TIFF NeXT RLE decoder issue (CVE-2006-3462). I can reboot and it will work, but if I put my macbook to sleep it, when I wake it, it will do the same thing again.
I am also getting timeouts waiting for results of 1st wireless scan to complete in console.
    Anyone else having this issue?

How do I remove my credit card from my account? Right now I have no* debit or credit card and when I try to download a free app like Facebook, it tells me to update my billing info and won't accept it blank. It says I owe for a previous purchase. So take it back and unlock my ability to DL free apps.
