Update 10.7.2, backup TM, doesn't boot, encoding, fonts problems

Hello,
after updating from 10.7.1 to 10.7.2 on my MacBookPro late 2009 I have following problems:
1. After update, I couldn't boot from my HDD which was encrypted by FileVault. A forbiden sign came up (s. attached).
2. My first try was: Make a clean install from Recovery HD. After I dowloaded Lion from Apple Store I proceeded installing it, but after 10 min I got the following message: "Install Failed: Mac OS X could not be installed on your scomputer. The installer could not remove old systems files on  "MacHDD". Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again". I tried again, but it failed with the same message.
3. Third attempt: after booting into the recovery HG I erased the HD with Utility Tool. After that I tried to install Lion 10.7.2 from App Store. It succeeded. During the installation I was asked to migrate my data from a backup which I accepted. After install and migrating I had following problems:
3.1 I can't see any emails I imported during the TM, Safari fails to display the font/encoding. System messages appears the same: All I can see instead of letters are quadrats with the letter "A" inside (s. attached)
3.2 My Firefox Profile failed from TM
3.3 I can't receive my emails from Mail.app I have connection to internet, but Mail can't connect to the mail servers/ports
4. I went to Apple Store in Munich: they gave me advice to try to first downgrade to Snow Leopard from the CD, then update to 10.6.8 to get App Store and after that re-download Lion again and install it. After that use Migrate Assistant to get my data from the TM backup. I did so, but first I formatted the hard drive. After each step I checked the system, it looked well. After migration of my data the same thing like 3.1 - 3.3.
About my TM Backup: it is pretty old unfortunately... [August 2011] After updating to 10.7 The encryption via FileVault was activated in Septmeber. After that I am not sure I let the bakup run via Time Machine... But I think I once connected the external HDD to make a backup, but am not sure if it was completed at all...
Please help me, I try to fix my system which used to run smoothly, since 3 days I am trying to fix it, can't sleep and work... What are your ideas????
Thank you
Greetings from Munich
Alla

tried verifying the hd and it said that my disk can't be repaired.
Boot from your Recovery Partition (or another volume with Disk Utiltiy) and run Disk Utility > Repair Disk. Run it several times if it's unsucessful on the first try until it reports the disk seems OK, or it cannot repair.
If it can't repair it, you should be sure you have a good backup. You can try to zero out the disk by re-formatting using the write zeros option. Then, try a fresh install. Or, the disk may be beyond any repair and you'll need to replace it.
In the meantime you can run off a clone if you have one.

  • SnowLeopard, Update, doesn't boot.

I have a Mac mini Model A1176, awesome computer till recently. I updated the OS and upon reboot it doesn't boot up. So i tried the following. .
    1. unplugged everything let it set for 10 min or so. plugged the power and monitor in (bluetooth keyboard mouse) still doesn't boot, i dont think the problem is in my external devices.
    2. target boot into an external hard drive. ran leopard and backed up my user file. The system booted just fine with the external, everything worked, i dont think its the logic board.
    3. reinstalled snow leopard and everything was working fine on the fresh install. (i also dont think its the hard drive sense it formatted and installed fine) I updated just the core system update and when it restarts it doesn't boot up. Starts normally, goes to the apple screen with the little loading icon spinning, then it flashes blue (like leopard before it boots) then it goes back to the apple screen with the loading icon and it freezes.
    4. The computer booted up fine before i updated, Im pretty much lost. I would like to run the latest updates, we use this mini as a family media center. Any suggestions on to what i should do?

You could try a reset. Unplug everything except a PC key board connected to the USB port and monitor.
Hold the power button in for about 5-8 seconds until you hear a loud bong then a small bong.
If that doesn't work try this.
    1. Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    2. Wait 10 seconds.
    3. Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    4. Let go of the power button.
    5. Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
If that doesn't work your HD partitions may be corrupted. Boot up the mac mini with the Install disk in the CD-ROM and with a PC keyboard connected via the USB port hold down the "c" key then press the power button.
In the install system options menu use the disk utility to check your HD's. Completely repartition the HD with the disk utility then install Mac OS X. If that still doesn't solve the problems you may need to have a new HD installed.
Also with the A1176 you can do a hardware test. Using the original install disks that came with your mac mini (Mine are a Tiger 10.4 Gray CD) start your computer while holding down the "d" key on a PC usb keyboard. When the Hardware tests loads then select extended testing to see if the hardware tests detect any problems.
If you still can't solve the problem you may need to have a specialist look at your computer.

My ipad 1 is stuck on IOS 4 as these IOS 5 update instructions do not work. When I use itunes update the software looks for an IOS 5 software update file and the apple site doesn't seem have one anywhere!

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • Mac Book Pro doesn't boot (twice; after updating) and slow performance before these incidents

    Hi,
Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
Yesterday I downloaded and installed  an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems?

You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Which app did you download?
If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
Have you tried a Safe Boot?

Help: I have recently downloaded the newest software version for apple products. I have a iPod touch. After the process of updating my software, my photo app doesn't work anymore. I can't take pictures or view them at all. Every time I try opening the app it kicks me out of it and sends me to the home screen. I have tried turning off my iPod and back on multiple times. Even double tapping the home screen button and closing my opened apps. And I tried looking for the photo app in the app store but I did not see it. So I am wondering what can I do? And is this due to the new software update? Does anyone else have this problem?

No, I have not tried any backup tools. I havent restored my ipod back to factory settings yet and then sync everything back on it. I am kind of scared too because I dont want to lose anything. I have just been hoping some new apple software update will come out because I know several people have had problems when updating to the newest version available.

  • HT1222 I need to update my husbands iPad but it doesn't show a update but he has ios4

I need to update my husbands iPad but it doesn't show a update but he has ios4

If you mean that it doesn't show the Settings > General > Software Update option then that only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, with iOS 4 you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
Your iPad should be updated to iOS 6.0.1 (which is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple), so you will lose the built-in YouTube app and the Maps app will change - but google have app versions in the store.

You may have a Safari third party add on installed that was compatible with the previous version of Safari but not 5.1. Try troubleshooting > Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

Besweet, I'm having the very same problem with 60GB colour which was bought new and worked for 6 months before suddenly just not being recognised by PC. I hadn't changed anything at all.
I've followed all troubleshooting advice and reinstalled and updated iTunes and iPod updater software but all troubleshooting routes seem to hit the dead end of either the need to access the iPod via the PC (which isn't possible as it's not showing up at all) or the iPod in disc mode stuck at "ok to disconnect".
It's still under 1yr warranty so will have to take to a dealer.
I'm sorry that's not much help for you but at least you know it's not a unique problem.

So you are saying that you followed all of the steps in the support document for problems with connection, including removing and reinstalling iTunes? You do not say what you have tried, so it is hard to make recommendations. If this is the case, then you have tried resolving driver issues? What if you go to Device Manager and look for the iPhone. You should be able to click on it and see about drivers. You can update/reinstall the device driver.
