Update 2g ipod touch from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1?

Should I update my 2nd generation ipod touch from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1?  Are there any performance, battery or other issues?

From what I've seen, some report battery and performance problems and some don't.  Many reports are written by people who don't seem to be very sophisticated, so it's hard to know if the problem is with the update or the user. There also seem to be unit-by-unit variations.  As I type this, I see someone who's having a problem with 3.1.2, which has been fine for me.   I've seen fewer reports of problems with 4.2 than 4.0, but have not seen any good comparisons of 3.1.2 to 4.2.
Most apps I use have iOS 4 updates available.  If updating doesn't cause much of a problem, it would make sense, but it's not worth it if I'll suffer serious battery or performance issues.
I'm guessing I'm not going to get a definitive answer.

Can I update my iPod touch from iOS 4.2.1 to iOS 5?

If it's a second generation iPod touch, no; they can't be updated past 4.2.1.
If it's a third generation iPod touch, yes.
If it's a fourth generation iPod touch, no; they can only be updated directly to 6.1.3.

  • HT1329 Can I update my iPOD touch from a new computer?

I was wondering if it's possible to update my IPOD touch from a different computer, the one I was using crashed and now I can't update my ipod and it's difficult because I can't download current games.
Also, How do I download my music from my ipod to the new computer

Copy or move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer or the backup of the old computer to the new computer, then you can sync and update the device.
If for some silly reason you have failed to backup, shame on you.
That being said you should be able to do the following:
Connect the device to the computer but do not sync.
Right click on the device and select Transfer Purchases.
Once complete, right click on the device and select Backup Device.
Doing this should change the device association to the new computer allowing you to sync and update the device and apps.

  • How do I update my ipod touch from 5.1 to 5.1.1 without backing up?

    Hi,
I'd like to perform the backup from iOS 5.1 to 5.1.1 on my 64 gig ipod touch, but to do so without backing any data up onto my hard drive. I only have a few gigs left on my computer's hard drive and my ipod is almost full. Is this possible?
    My mac is a powerbook g4 1.67 ghz running os x 10.5.8.
    Thanks!

Hi, I have just bought an Ipod on ebay and advertised as 3rd Generation, I have also discovered that this is a 2nd Generation, the info I have researched follows:-
Why can't I update my iPod touch to iOS 5?
Only the third-generation or fourth-generation iPod touch can run iOS 5. My guess is that you have a second-generation model for which iOS 4.2.1 is the last version available. You can confirm the model you have here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 Regards.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.
Buyers beware make sure you get the right model number or you will not be able to download most of the new games apps. as these need 4.3.1. and later software which can not be done ona 2nd Generation.

  • Can I update a iPod Touch from a different PC and not lose my media files?

OK. Here is the question, can you update a iPod touch which is on iOS 4.x to iOS 6.0 using a different computer that it was originally synced to, but not lose any of the media files on it?

Only if all your synced media like apps and music are in the iTunes library of that computer.

  • How can I update my ipod touch from 5.0.1 software to 5.1 ?!

If u know just tell me abut it because i can not open safari,apps,etc...
i want the new software because i want siri.

Siri is not part of iOS 5.1 for the iPod touch, so if that's your only reason for upgrading, you'd be wasting your time. Siri is only available on the iPhone 4S.
If you want to upgrade, though, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
or if you have WiFi from your iPod go to the Software Update section of the General settings .
    Regards.

  • I updated my Ipod Touch (from version 2.2) but nothing obvious has happened

First of all, hello You could say I'm a newbie to this website lol.
Anyway, I've had my Ipod Touch since Christmas 2008. I've used it previously, obvously - but then had to have my original laptop reformatted, & I didn't want to risk losing all of my music by downloading itunes again & having no music when it started to sync so I never used it again. I got a new laptop for Christmas 2009 & decided I wasn't that interested in whether I lost music or not because I would only have revamped everything & replaced old music with new so I went ahead & downloaded itunes again. At first, it wouldn't recognise the ipod at all. (I tried the lead in all USB's as somebody suggested but that didn't work. I restored the whole ipod, but it still wasn't recognisable. A friend gave me one of his leads to borrow & I've got everything working. I downloaded a few of the free apps from the itunes store, but a pop-up window came up when I tried to sync, telling me that they wouldn't work because I needed a newer version (OS or something? But it mentioned iPhone.) I updated it to the newest version, as somebody else suggested & when I'd clicked 'done,' it showed me the games list. I'm not sure whether it's worked or not. I used my Mum's credit card, & she gets quite wary after a substantial amount of money went missing from my Dad's bank account after using Amazon. I checked my itunes account & the recent purchases, which just listed the apps I'd downloaded with no mentioning of the update. I'm beginning to think it hasn't worked, but as I'm new to this sort of thing - I'm not sure whether it takes time? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm actually having the SAME problem. I did not get an error message after I paid for the upgrade and it downloaded. I restarted my iPod Touch. I redownloaded iTunes. I restarted my laptop. If anyone could help with this situation that would be great.

  • HT4623 How can I update my ipod touch from 4.2.1 to 5.0

Where can I find updated software to download for my iPod Touch 4th generation from 4.2.1 to 5.1 or higher?

How do I transfer music files from my laptop to my Ipod Touch?

The only way to get it fixed is to contact the carrier to whom the phone is locked.  You will need to find out:
    1) IF the carrier offers unlocking.  Not all carriers do
    2) IF the carrier indeed offers unlocking, what the requirements are.  You might not fulfill them.

Also, look at the article for stuff about the hosts file since you may have to get that back to normal since downgrading usually requires changing the hosts file.

  • Can't install iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch

I am trying to download the iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch from http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/whatsnew.html so I can download apps for my new iPod touch. (Although it is pretty bogus that I should have to pay $10 for an upgrade on a brand new device so that I have the privilege to buy apps). I have iTunes 7.7 already installed.
When I click on the link https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLandingPage , I do not get a download, and iTunes does not open. Nothing happens if I open iTunes before trying this link either.
Instead, I get a brief page which says "One Momemt Please". Connecting to the iTunes Store. Loading... If iTunes doen't open, click the iTunes application in your Doc or Windows Task Bar" , then my browser is redirected to http://www.apple.com/itunes/affiliates/download/?itmsUrl=itmss%3A%2F%2Fphobos.ap ple.com%2FWebObjects%2FMZFinance.woa%2Fwa%2FtouchLandingPage%3Fign-mscache%3D1 which tells me to download iTunes... but I already have iTunes installed.
I installed (then uninstalled, reinstalled) the latest iTunes (7.7.0.43) and the problem persists. iTunes works fine for all other uses.
I have the problem with both Firefox (3.0) and Internet Explorer (6)
How can I download and install The iPhone 2.0 Software Update for iPod touch directly from iTunes? I cannot find it when I search for it. It is not listed in the App store.
(P.S. The web support form does not work when I tried to fill out a problem report for "Connection" issues. Although I filled in all form fields, it would not send the report, telling me I did not fill in a field.)

The upgrade now appears directly in iTunes, so I do not need to access it from the web page. I see many others are encountering problems installing the upgrade, so I'll see how it goes...
There is no answer to the initial problem that iTunes install does not configure the browsers to handle the itmss:// protocol.
I still think Apple should not charge for this for a brand new iPod purchased just this week.

  • I updated my iPod touch 4th generation from the latest iOS 4 update (i think maybe iOS 4.3.5 or something like that) to iOS 5.1.1 and my Photos, Videos, contacts, music, App data, etc. was deleted. How can I all the data back?

I updated my iPod touch 4th generation from the latest iOS 4 update (i think maybe iOS 4.3.5 or something like that) to iOS 5.1.1. I updated to iOS 5.1.1 on a Windows XP Home Edition with the Service Pack 3 installed on the Windows XP (which I believe is the latest version). After updating, I unplugged my iPod from the computer. I saw that all my photos and videos were on my iPod, but there were no apps. A window popped up and told me to enter a passcode for my iPod. I entered a passcode. I then locked my iPod and entered what I thought to be the correct passcode, but my iPod remained unlocked. Desperate, I tried many passcodes with failure. After a while, my iPod became disabled for a long time. I decided to reset my iPod. After I reseted it, I chose to reset from my earlier back up. After reseting, my computer loaded on all my apps. But, when I started using my iPod, I realized all my photos, videos, music, app data (like game saves and high scores), etc. were gone! I have no idea what to do and I am very stressed about this! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET ALL MY STUFF BACK!!!!!!

Go to iTunea>Preferences>Devices and see if there is a backupright at the time you did the update. Then try restoring from that backup. If the apps are in your iTunes library, any app data will be restored to the iPod.
When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode). iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.
Therefore, remembe the passcode that you enter this time.
It appears that if you restore from a backup, that backup is not subseqyently overwritten by the next backup.

  • I just updated my Ipod touch to the newest software and now I can not get any of my songs to sync onto my Ipod. All of my songs were wiped from my Ipod but are still in my library and playlists on my computer, but when I click sync none of it works

So I updated my Ipod touch to the newest software on my pc laptop which is windows 7. The software update wiped all of my songs and apps off of my Ipod. This is not that big of a deal because the songs and apps are still in my library and apps folder in itunes on my computer. The problem is, when I go to sync all my songs and apps back onto my ipod the tracks and apps are not syncing. It's almost as if the computer thinks all the songs are still already on the ipod but they are not. What do I do here?

    - Try resetting the iPod. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next, restore from backup.
