Check the hosts file. The restore will fail if there is an active entry to redirect gs.apple.com. FollowiTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting to edit the hosts file or revert to a default hosts file. See section "Blocked by configuration: (Mac OS X/Windows) > Rebuild network information".
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.

Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Where did you acquire this iPhone?
What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>
About=>Carrier? -
HT4972 Can't update my iPhone 4 from iOS 4.1 to anything higher using iTunes
I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1. I just want to get to 4.3 or higher because a game I like now requires it. I'd be happy with iOS 4.3... but 6 will do too. When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, the Update button reads "A newer version of the iPhone software is available (v 6.0)" so one owuld assume that the Update button would get me iOS 6. But when I click on the Update button, it gives me an error message telling me that my version of iTunes (10.6) is current. I don't need to update iTunes, I need to update my iOS and the one button that does that can't tell the two apart. Help!
Thanks!Thanks for the reply... but ugh, this is snow-balling out of control: Just to play a game that requires iOS 4.3, I have to upgrade iTunes, but to upgrade iTunes to 10.7.0.21, we need to upgrade the Mac OS from 10.5 to 10.6.8, which seems to cost $30. If I'm going to spend $30, I wish I could be giving the money to the game developers instead of to buying/getting 2 new OSes that I otherwise didn't need. So does anyone else have any other ways to get my iPhone up to iOS 4.3 (or higher) without all these steps and money?

I would like directions for updating my 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch using iTunes 11.0. The directions say that I should be able to view my device in iTunes and do to "device" and then "summary" and select update from there. Unfortunately, there is no longer a "summary" in "devices." There is only "Sync", "Transfer purchases", "back up" and "restore backup."I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

I am trying to update a 4s. The update did not work for some reason. Now I need to restore the iPhone. When I connect the usb to the computer and phone it says I need to restore. So, I click to restore. It starts extracting the software. But I am continually getting the same error message that it cannot complete for unknown error. I have been working on this for 5 and a half hours. I'm tired, mu husband needs his phone and apple support is a joke and of course I can't find any answers anywhere. Please help!

First of all what PC type do you have, then what IOS are you running and finally what Itunes are you running.

I recently upated my itunes account to 10.6. I am using a relatively new PC running Windows 7. Previously Itunes had been working perfectly but since the update it freezes every time I try use Itunes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes but still have the same problem. Any suggestions? I have been using itunes on my windows 64 bit laptop for years but since downloading the latest itunes 10.7 update whenever I opened itunes the error message 'A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes (-42404)'
Itunes would still load and play music in my library and I could still sync my ipod but when loading a CD itunes would not recognise the album/tracks and I would need to type them manualing after uploading.
I have just bought the new iphone5 and went to sync the phone with itunes. itunes recognises the iphone when plugged in via the usb port or when wi fi is turned on but itunes will not allow the phone to sync.
I spent over an hour the other morning speaking to apple customer support and have ensured I have administer right and that UAC is turned off.
I was taken through msconfigure and adjusted the startup tab but still no joy.
In the end I was e-mailed instructions on how to uninstall and then reinstall itunes and component parts.
Now that I've uninstalled itunes when I try reinstalling I get the following messages during the download.
The 1st message is;
'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
When I click ok the next message that appears sometime later during the install is;
Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) Failed to start Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
The options I have are to abort, retry or ignore. If I retry the same message comes back and if I abort or ignore the download continues and I then get the following message:
'Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run itunes Helper. Please uninstall itunes, then reinstall itunes again. Error 2'
After attempting to reinstall itunes only some components were installed however itunes would not open.
It would appear many people have experienced problems with this latest download!'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards? -
I'm trying to update my iOS to 6.0, using iTunes (with my 4s connected via USB and WiFi is on also). I get a message that 'there are purchased items on my iPhone that have not been transferred to my iTunes library. Yet, I can't find those items! Help! While trying to update my iPhone 4 to iOs6 it froze on the connect to itunes screen and i needed to do a restore. But it restored my phone to january 2011 even though i just backed my phone to my laptop up 2 weeks ago. I still have all my contacts but i lost a lot of apps and text messages. Is there any way to make it restore to my most recent back up?
I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS.I've never had this problem before... today I opened iTunes and it prompted me to download the newest version. I use iTunes all the time and have updated it multiple times with no issues. During the installation process it gave me an error message that said:

I quit the installation, uninstalled iTunes and rebooted my computer. I now receive a similar message with a slight difference:

I did not leave anything out from the error message. It doesn't point to a specific file, it just ends with "(x86)..." Every time I boot up my computer, this error message pops up on my desktop.
How do I repair this issue? I have found multiple suggested solutions but am unsure which one is the best, and I don't want to try a bunch of different things for fear I may make the problem worse. I would like to try and fix this myself if possible but I need to know if that is really possible or if I need to take my computer to someone for repairs. - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
