Update apple ID.  Someone is using my email address as their ID

I just updated to IOS 5 on my iPad 2 and the first thing it does is go through the setup process again.  I put in my apple ID like normal, but now it says that I have to update my apple ID to an email address.  No problem, I put in my email address and it tells me that someone is using my address as their ID already.  I only have one email address and I have never created an apple id using it.  as a matter of fact, that email address is the one tied to my original apple id.  Is there anything I can do about this?

Same problem here.  I've ignored it for awhile, but now with all the iCloud/Facetime/etc business it's really becoming a pain. Somebody else is using my [email protected] as their ID, and when I try to do the password reset I never get the email, so they've obviously got another one in there.  Also, I cannot go through birthday verification since I don't know their birthday.  I've ended up using [email protected] as my own Apple ID, since that gets delivered to my inbox.
Tried the Apple support route a few months ago and it looked like they were ready to help me out by removing the email from this other person's account, but they wimped out and told me they couldn't help.
It's true, you can grab any email you want if nobody else has, and Apple does nothing to verify it.  Once it's grabbed, nobody else can associate it with their Apple ID.
This is a big messy problem; hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

If a person is using your email address, you should change your email password and make sure there aren't any forwards to some strange email address.
An example if you were using gmail, under account settings, a forward can be set up to send messages to another email address.
If your email address is say, you own domain, such as somename@somename dot com, make sure the forwards are forwards you set up.
If your email account was hacked and the bad guy has access, you need to cut him off, first by changing the password and second cut off any message forwarding to the bad guy if he set it up.  Just changing the password would keep a bad guy out, but if the bad guy set up a forward, he will still get your email.
A confirmation from Apple would have come to your email address in order to confirm that Apple ID.  If you are getting the other person's purchase notifications, you would have gotten a confirmation of that account from Apple.

  • Someone has been using my email address as their Apple ID

    Hello,
Someone has been using MY email address as their Apple ID.  When I started setting up my own Apple ID with my own email address, I eventually had to reset the associated password, thinking I had made this Apple ID earlier.  Then when I logged into the account, it turned out to be someone else's account.  Help, how do I fix this so I have my Apple ID associated with my email address and the other person knows to change their Apple ID email address?
    Thanks!

I had this happen a few years ago. Someone created an iTunes account using one of my Gmail email addresses. I got the email to verify the account.  I verified it, and then hit the forgot my password link. Reset the password and logged in. There I could see the ladies name, address and credit card. I changed it all to my name and removed the payment info and never entered my card number so they account could not be used.
    Never had a problem again.

  • What if I think someone is using my email address?

During a scanning it said someone is using my email address. How can I make sure they are banned from this. I've changed passwords.

Which scan, if its your email, you need to contact your email/webmail provider. If its Firefox sync, youve come to the right place.

  • Someone with my name is using my email address as their Apple ID

Someone with my name is using my gmail account ([email protected]) as their apple ID. So all of the emails are coming to me. I tried texting the phone number in the account, but was unable to. (I'm not calling because they're in Canada.) They have credit in the iTunes store, and there's no real reason to think they're nefarious, but I'd like them to stop using my email address!

  • Someone else is using my email address as their apple id?

I am trying to create an apple ID, but it states one already exists using that email address; although when I try to reset the password, I don't receive the emails and if I try to answer the security questions, it wont accept my DoB?  Help... how can someone else have registered my email address as their apple ID?

You'll probably have to contact iTunes store support to straighten this out.  They deal with Apple ID issues all the time.  You can contact them here: http://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html.

  • Someone subscribed using my email address

I got an e-mail that confirmed that I made a subscription to Skype. However I did not subscribe to Skype and the e-mail was addressed to a name other than mine. Now I have a Skype Name that is not my own name and that I won't use, but I can not delete it...
I don't like that someone can make a Skype account and use my e-mail address, I had no e-mail to confirm the subscription, it just went through the process without my consent. How is this possible and what should I do to delete this Skype name that I don't want to have linked to my e-mail address?

I think Skype doesn't send verification emails when creating an account, so anyone can register an account using anyone's email address, as well as non-existing ones).  You can contact customer service to report that unknown account, and to request to unlink your email address from that unknown account.

  • Someone is using my email address on Skype. Please...

I used Skype for many years but haven't tie it with any Microsoft account. Few days ago I received a verification email asking me to confirm a Microsoft account that use my email address. I clicked the link to cancel that account, still I received Skype welcoming email on that day and also today.
I guessed I myself should register a Microsoft account using that email address to prevent someone from using it again. I did so. I verified it. I tied this new Microsoft account to my Skype account and try checking once again if there's someone using it. I put my email address on Skype's search box and I found her. The one who tried to use my email address.
Where can I get help? I don't want my friend to search for my email and find her instead. I can prove that the email address certainly belongs to me. Please help!

    Dear Readers,
Please contact Skype Customer Service to report these unauthorized accounts created using your e-mail address and to request the accounts be de-linked from your e-mail account.  Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
If you experience difficulty reaching Skype Customer Service, try again using a different web browser. Also, look to approve a pop-up dialogue box which would connect you to start an instant message chat with a customer service agent. If you have pop-ups blocked in your browser settings, this will also impede reaching an agent.
I would also recommend changing the e-mail account's password.
    Regards,
    Elaine

  • Someone is using my email address and sending virus emails how can I stop this happening?

Someone has hijacked my address book and is sending virus infected mail using my email address to other people in my address book. How do I get rid of this hacker from my Mac, and how do I prevent this happening again.

Your mail account has almost certainly been hacked on the server, not on your computer, unless someone has had access to the latter.
Log in to the mail server's web interface and change the password. If you use the same password for any other accounts, change those passwords too, and make them all different. Internet passwords should be random strings of at least 10 characters. You most likely don't need to, and should not be able to, remember them. They should be saved in your keychain and backed up with the rest of your data.
One way to generate a secure password is the following. Triple-click anywhere the line below to select it:
    openssl rand -base64 10 | cut -c-14 | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected line to the clipboard (command-C). Launch the Terminal application and paste into the window that opens (command-V). A string of 14 random characters will appear in a TextEdit window. Use that string, or a substring, as the password. To generate another random string, press the up-arrow key and then the return key with the Terminal window active. You can then quit Terminal.
If the compromised account is on Gmail, then changing the password may not be enough. Follow all of Google'sinstructions to secure it.

  • Someone is using my email address for BT to send a...

Not sure how to explain this but I will try!
In May 2012 I switched to BT for Broadband and gave them my Hotmail address to send the info too which was fine.
I then started to receive emails to this hotmail account for Tesco club card, which I don't have, Love film which I don't have and Gocompare.com, I have pointed out to who I could that they are sending to the wrong address.
Recently I have been getting emails from BT saying that my BB is now working and that I have subscribed to BT sport and tonight I have received a notice to say that I went over my quota last month and offering unlimited.
None are pertinent to me and I can only assume that someone is giving out my email address by mistake. The person involved has the same surname as me and I now know his home address and BT account number plus his BT email address.
Back in August when the last messages arrived about his BT account I emailed his BT email address  pointing out that he was giving out the wrong Hotmail email address and that he should change it as I was getting all his personal info, I received no reply and the emails continue.
I realise that it is not BT's fault but perhaps someone could advise me -:
    1) Is it possible for someone else to be given the same Hotmail address as me? (I thought not)
    2) How do I email BT to ask them to stop this person giving my email address for his info without stopping them sending my info to the same address?
    3) Where in BT do I change the email address to which they send me BB info? It's a different email to my normal one on BT com and I can't see where to change it.
It is awkward as when info arrives from BT I sometimes have a job working out if it's genuinely for my account or for this other person!

  • Someone is using my email address

There have been several occasions recently when people on my address list have received emails appearing to be from my BT email account. These mails have no subject and contain just a link to some unknown site. They appear to be sent to a block of about 12 or so addresses and the addresses vary each time but are all from my contact list. I have contacted BT and been advised to change my password and security question and to check that there were no spurious and unrecognised entries in my account details. I have done all this plus I have removed my signature detail from my account details. The problem is still happening and the emails still being sent still include my signature name even though I have deleted from my account detail. I have two other email accounts (aol and Yahoo) which I have had for years and never had this problem. I have had my BT account for six months! The irony is that I have never used my BT email and don't intend to! How can I stop this as it is annoying a lot of friends and business contacts?

My email address has been used by somebody else four times in the last few weeks - the last time half an hour ago. The first time BT noticed and sent me the standard message saying change your password, which I did. The second time they didn't seem to notice but I changed my password again anyway. The third time I changed it once more, emailed BT to draw attention to the fact this was happening and pointed out that a friend had received several 'spoof' emails that day, all from BT addresses. This suggested to me it was a BT problem, if not uniquely then most commonly. Despite the promise of a prompt reply to my message, I received nothing at all, other than a week or so later in the form of yet another standard email advising me to change my password. I thought this ironic given it was me who'd told BT about the problem in the first place! This morning a friend with a BT email address has found that she has again been the victim of an email address thief, the third time in three weeks. And now me for a fourth time. So rather than give out the stock advice about changing passwords, can somebody at BT please say why this problem is occurring so regularly; whether there is anything customers can do to prevent it and more importantly, whether there is anything BT is doing to prevent it. It would be nice to be able to speak to somebody at BT about this but needless to say, if there is a telephone number, it's well hidden - unless of course you want to buy a BT product. Time to change provider and email address perhaps?
If you are still got a BT Yahoo email account then a worthwhile check is to login with your BTInternet email address using this Yahoo login to check your Login History
    http://api.login.yahoo.com/login/history
If you have any logins that were not performed by you then it indicates that someone is using your account illegally.
Note that the converse is not necessarily true.
For security reasons do NOT tick the "Keep me Logged In" box.
