Update BIOS Satellite S55-A5176 on Debian Linux?

Can I update my Satellite S55-A5176 BIOS on a Debian based (not Ubuntu) Linux system? I tried doing this in WINE. Only portions of the exe will run. Can I create the bootable BIOS from my Linux machine. Even better can do this from the command line and make a bootable USB? It would be best if I can do this with the operating system without installing poorly support software or library goosehunts.

There is an issue with the bios on these newer toshibas, at least my model I know for a fact has this problem.
I have to set my sata interface to "battery life' which is i believe sata 2 mode in order for it to be detected.
To get into the bios from windows 8 on a newer toshiba follow these steps.
From within windows 8
1. Open the side panel and click on Settings
2. At the bottom click on Change PC Settings
3. Click on the Update and Recovery
4. Click Recovery and under Advanced Startup click Restart Now
5. The Option menu will pop up, click on Troubleshoot
6. Click on Advanced Options and then click UEFI Firmware Settings
7. Click Restart and your system will boot into the bios.
Under the Advanced Tab, set the SATA Interface Setting to "Battery Life" and your ssd should be detected perfectly.

  • Recovery of 8.1 for Satellite S55-A5176 will not successfully activate windows 8.1

A couple of days ago I rebooted the laptop as it was funning a little slow.  Upon reboot I was forced to do a recovery after trying a few of the suggestions on the troubleshooting screen.  I went through the recovery process with my recovery disks and since then reinstalled my software apps and files.
I am getting failure on activating Windows 8.1.
    My machine is a S55-A5176
I have had it for just over a year.  Not sure what caused the failure, but now I can't successfully complete the updates of the OS or activate it.
I don't get a phone number on the screen.  Just the following:
    Windows can't activate right now.
Try again later.  If that doesn't work, contact support.
The link, "See support info online" doesn't do anything.
I also tried running the process from the command line, 'slui.exe 4' but it doesn't do anything after answering United States for country.
Am I stuck with having to try the revocery over again.

Can you burn new recovery discs? Or maybe make a flash drive this time.
See the instructions in the section Creating recovery media, which begins on p. 54 of the User's Guide.

  • Updating BIOS in Linux: MSI A88XM GAMING

    Hello Everyone,
I recently purchased MSI A88XM-GAMING motherboard.
Is there anyway for me to apply updates (bios & chipset) to this motherboard under linux?  Or is there a how-to guide for linux users?
Also since this is my first MSI motherboard curios as to driver support under linux for this motherboard.

    Thanks darkhawk.
Any idea how much support there is for motherboard drivers under linux
I personally do not know. But I would imagine that mostly it should be supported just fine.

  • Updating BIOS on Tecra A10-IC5

    Dear members
I have the Tecra A10-IC5 (-ptsb0e-03d01ken), and have *windows 8* installed on it. It was my wish to update the bios to the latest version.
Accordingly I navigated to the Toshiba website, and, using the auto-detect tool that Toshiba provide, was directed to the drivers list for my model.
The list of drivers included bios update, and it was designated as "operating system independent".
Therefore I downloaded and unpacked the file, and launched the program.
    (bios 2009110452403)
However as soon as I did this the program abruptly terminated with the message "this computer is not supported"
With that in mind I would like to request advice - could anyone please tell me what I must do to update bios
    thanks you
    Ian

    > Please do you know whether I would be able to update bios if I booted from a Linux live cd eg Linux mint.
WIN update is designed to e installed in Windows only. Toshiba doesnt support Linux and dont create any software that can be used with it.
    > please do you know what improvements the latest bios would offer over the one that was installed when the laptop was new.
Unfortunately Toshiba Europe doesnt offer list with exact explanation what is new.

  • Satellite S55 BIOS update to 1.60 has a problem with UEFI keyboard backlight control

I recently updated my BIOS to version 1.60 from 1.50. The update went well. However now the setting for the keyboard backlight control will not hold my setting. I don't wish the backlight to illuminate as it will use up power. When I enter my UEFI and change the setting to "OFF", then save and exit, the keyboard illumination appears to operate as expected. However, following a Windows restart, or shutdown and boot, the UEFI setting resets to "TIMER" with "Backlight Lighting Time" set to 0. If I leave the mode set to "Timer", and set "Backlight Lighting Time" to 10, again the backlight appears to operate properly. But a reboot resets the time to 0. I thought possibly I was not saving and exiting UEFI properly. To test this, I change the setting for the "Internal USB3.0 Controller from "Enable" to "Disable", then also set the backlight control to "OFF", did a save/exit. I found that the USB3.0 remained disabled, but the backlight control again reset to "Timer". The BIOS update was provided by the Toshiba Service Station app as an optional update, so it should be the right one for my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.
My laptop is a Satellite S55-A5295 and is running Windows 8.1 with BIOS 1.60 and EC 1.20.

Thank you for your response. When I purchased the laptop, I also bought a 2-year repair plan with Geek Squad.  I took the device to the tech and it was his opinion that there might be a bug in the BIOS I installed.  I asked if we could retro the BIOS to a previous version and he told me he didn't recommend it as there are always risks when updating the BIOS.  He said it wasn't worth it as the device was stable with no other known issues besides the keyboard lighting.  He recommended I contact Toshiba support to document the problem.  This I did.  However, I was told by Toshiba I was beyond my complimentary support and would have to pay $49 to correct the issue.  I agreed to purchase the support.  The tech had me try various resets including the hardware reset button but to no avail.  At this point the tech informed me that I can always press "Fn-z" to cycle the lights off after boot/restart, and that my support time was ending.  I only hope that the problem is with the BIOS and not with hardware such as BIOS memory, and that a new firmware update will correct the problem. I appreciate this forum and the people that are trying to help others correct their problems.  Please keep up the good work.

  • Can not find BIOS update for Satellite A30

    Hi friends.
I'am not found Toshiba A30-203 a new BIOS update.
I want install the windows vista but this error sccren.
    Error message:
"A computer has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is first time you2ve seen this Stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
The BIOS in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your system vendor for an updates BIOS."
to apologize for my bad English.

    Hi
It seems the Satellite A30 series is a one of series which was delivered with the no Vista support BIOS.
I think it should be possible to install Vista after a the BIOS update.
But know you will ask for the new BIOS version. Am I right? ;)
Well, on the Toshiba BIOS page you should find different BIOS versions.
Its very important that you will check the more info option before you will start the BIOS update. There you should find information about the BIOS compatibility (not every version is compatible with every unit).
But as you know the Vista is not official on the market. As far as I can remember it should be possible to buy the OS in January 2007.
I think Toshiba will offer a new version of Vista BIOS in the next time. I hope so ;)

  • Satellite A200-1DN - How to update BIOS for Windows 7

I'm running 32bit Windows 7 on a Satellite A200 1DN. I've been having battery problems (plugged in, not charging) and I understand I need to update my BIOS. However I can't find a BIOS update for Windows 7, only Vista and XP.
Can anyone help? Should I update with the Vista BIOS? Are there any other options for solving this battery problem? I've already tried an ATX reset, and uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ian

Theoretically, you can install Windows Vista to update Bios and return Win 7, then. Before doing, try this:
Unplug the computer from the AC adapter and turn it on. Let the computer run under battery power until the computer turns off
Remove the battery pack. Using a soft cloth, wipe off the battery packs connectors and the AC adapters connectors.
Re-insert the battery pack and plug the computer into the AC adapter
    > I've already tried an ATX reset, and uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery.
by the way, did you have the same issue before installing Win 7?

  • Can I use European BIOS 2.1 update for Satellite A300 PSAGCA?

    Hi,
my toshiba is Satellite A300 PSAGCA-02Y010, bought in Sep-2008.
I'd like to update BIOS to latest 2.10 version for windows 7 ,but in Toshiba-NZ website ,I can only find 1.9 version, I do find 2.10 in Toshiba-Europe for A300, but Europe models are all different from NZ.
My question is: Could I use this europe 2.10 BIOS in my nz toshiba A300? thanks.

    Hi
I would not recommend using an BIOS which is not released for your notebook model.
There are many different notebook series on the market.
You should use the BIOS which is exactly designed for the notebook model!
As you know, BIOS update is an sensible process and you can damage the ROM chip using wrong BIOS!

  • After BIOS update my Satellite A200-13J is slower

My notebook is slower since I updated the BIOS? I bought this notebook 1,5 month ago and now it takes 7 minutes to start! Internet Explorer takes 50 seconds to start...
Did I installed an update which isn't compatible with my notebook?? What do I have to do???

I have updated BIOS on Satellite A200 (PSAE0) to version 5.20 and there are no changes at all. Maybe you should back up all your important data and make clean OS installation.
I know it sounds stupid but you must also understand that nobody here know your personal OS settings and what can be reason for slow bootup.

  • Satellite S55 DVD Directory List Not Updating

New install of a Toshiba Satellite S55.The drive seems to work ok, but the file listing does not u.pdate when you insert or remove a dvd.If there is a DVD in the drive, Windows Explorer shows the contents.  Pull out the DVD, and Windows Explorer still thinks the drive is there.  Ditto in the other direcection - inserting a new drive, you need to force Windows Explorer to update. This is particularly a problem when you try to install a multiple disk application - the system does not update that a new disk is in the drive and keeps insisting you need to insert the next disk. Is this a Driver update issue? A DVD drive issue? A Windows issue?Help !!!!! Dave

    Hi
I think its a lower upper filter issue and I think you could solve this following this step by step instruction.
First of all remove the ODD (CD/DVD) drive from the list in device manager.
Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Finally you should reboot the unit.
After that windows will recognize the ODD again

  • Cannot update BIOS on Satellite A665

    Hi
I desperately need help with updating my BIOS on Satellite A665 as my battery is not charging and the site says for me to update BIOS but it is not letting me update saying battery is less than 10%.
Please someone help me as I have no way of using the laptop without AC power always present.

    Hi
What is your current battery level?
I think the BIOS update will prevent updating if the battery level is too low - this is a security feature.
In case your battery will not charge please try to disconnect it wait a second or two. Then connect it again.
    Still the same?
If so please let us know which BIOS version is in your system today.
    Thanks
    Tom

  • Update BIOS on Satellite A30-303

    Having a Satellite A30-303.
    With no work intern DVD.
Having a boot able usb DVD.
I wonder if I can update Bios from Ubuntu . I need do execute a .exe.
Or if I can take a boot disk and execute the file from DOS.

    Hi!
For the Satellite A30 is only a windows based BIOS update available.
I think that will not work on Ubuntu and you must install Windows to make this update.
Normally on Windows systems you must download the BIOS Update, extract the file .exe file and start it. That is all.
    Bye

  • Debian Linux suggestions for Satellite M60-135

    Hi there,
I'd like to have a running Debian Linux system as a primary OS on my M60-135.
Until now I've tried several Live CDs and DVDs:
    - Debian 4 itself
    - Knoppix up to 5.2
    - Kanotix 2006
    - Sidux Chaos
    - Ubuntu and Kubuntu (both 6.10)
    - Linux Mint 2.2
    Also:
    - Fedora Core 6
    - Mandriva free 2007
None of them work due to difficulties with the X server.
The ATI graphics chip obviously doesn't work.
The setup continues properly - even up to the starting sounds of the OS - yet the screen stays black.
Therefore no way to enter the console, edit files or whatever.
    Now my reply:
Did anyone manage to get a Debian system running on such a machine an if so - HOW?
Please keep in mind that I'm a Linux newbie and that I for those reasons would be glad for rather "visible" explanations ;-)
    By the way:
Opensuse 10.2 recognizes the graphics adapter correctly and boots up to a visible screen.
    What's different here?
Nonetheless will Suse not be my way of Linux ...
    Thanks for any ideas!
    Blues

    Hi,
the thing is that linux is not running perfectly on EVERY system, so if you want to begin with linux then use a distribution which works out of the box.
So, it doesnt matter which distribution you use, if you are a newbie then begin with suse. Its the perfect distro to begin, and after a while of practice you will get more experience and you would be able to configure your system if something fails.
Its just a matter of time which distro you will use, but dont overburden yourself with dists like fedora, gentoo or something else.
Try it with suse and make your way. :)
    Greets and good luck

  • Dual boot after updated Bios with Linux... Solution

I'm sure that this may be common knowledge for many but I had a devil of a time after I flashed my bios and tried to install a Linux distro.   My Windows 8 install went fine on a SSD but I  couldn't get my Linux hard drive in my second hard drive caddy in my CD/DVD slot to boot.   I'm a goof though.   I was using the Linux guided install instead of doing the partition myself and defining /    That worked.   The Boot files of course go in the Root partition but the distros I used grouped them with the home folder.
I figured this out with my Fedora install.   So my solution was to partition the target hard drive with  a live DVD.   Make a / partition and a home partition and swap.   Then load up the distro and go.   I hope I've helped someone and that Google pulls this up with a search.

    Quote from: ghost.u94 on 13-June-15, 18:41:14
solved- it was the dimm 3 and 4 which got errors.
not using dual channel now. only using DIMM1,2 but at least it boots up.
Then your board is most likely defective. Reseat cpu and see if pins in the socket are bent. Else it might be the slots or their wiring.
