UPDATE: Burning HDV to SD DVD Without Getting Judder etc.
I have written a lot about my problems burning HDV projects to SD DVD and the resulting jitter and artifacts.
My latest tests have some very curious results! (My HDV was actually captured in FCP natively but I have had similar results when using FCE and AIC).
I shot 90 seconds of HDV 1080i50 video. Very slow, fluid head tripod pans of a street plus a person walking across the frame with the camera stationary.
I then captured the video first as native HDV and again as "DV LOCKED" - where my camera down-converted the HDV to DV.
The 2 sets of video were Exported as QT Movies and burned in iDVD 08 using Best Performance.
As expected the HDV juddered and had unpleasant artifacts on straight diagonal lines.
The "DV LOCKED" video was OK with no signs of instability. The only peculiarity was an almost imperceptible distorting of the buildings as the camera panned. Previously Tom suggested it was connected with the shutter but the same clip, kept in HDV mode did not display it.
I then Exported the 2 projects from the FCP timeline to Compressor for encoding (CBR 7.7Mbps) and burned a DVD in DVDSP.
As expected, the native HDV clips were smooth, the only artifacts being slight aliasing/stepping on straight diagonal lines.
Surprisingly the "DV LOCKED" clips were very unstable and jittery ........ even worse than the HDV burned in iDVD! ........... I had been expecting them to be perfect!
So the conclusions are very definite.
1. If you are burning HDV in iDVD you must down-convert to DV as you are capturing and edit in a DV PAL Anamorphic sequence.
2. If you are burning HDV in Compressor/DVDSP you must keep it as HDV/AIC and NOT down-convert to DV.
I could have written pages detailing all my experiments and workflows in attempting to find answers but I don't want to cause too much boredom!
Actually you have written pages on this very issue which I've been following from time to time even though I haven't yet replied. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you. However, I will say this .... I think it is a wise move to down-convert in the camera itself upon playback (as you're currently doing via "DV-Locked") at least when dealing with apple's i-apps. And as you have experienced yourself, Apple's Pro apps (which Compressor is a part of) are an entirely different story.

How to burn an iMovie to DVD without losing quality? I have iMovie 10.0.5 and iMac 10.9.4 mountain lion. I do not have iDVD. After iMovie goes through the encoding process, quality is horrible. How can I fix this problem? I have tried the apps BURN and DVD Creator for MAC. I need to finish this DVD asap and becoming more and more frustrated. Why would Apple give us iMovie and not provide us an app to burn it to a DVD and / or take away the iDVD?

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see. -

It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.

Your Superdrive may need a clean.

Yes, there are programs that will put a movie on a DVD. I have tried most of the other substitutes including Toast, Burn, and others. None of them come anywhere near the ease-of-use and power of iDVD. IDVD is specifically designed to work with iMovie.
With iDVD you can easily and quickly create DVDs with menus and graphics almost on the level of what Hollywood can do.
IDVD is easy to get. It is available on disk as part of iLife 11.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

I just finished creating a movie using IMovie and want to burn it to a DVD and loop it. Since I just purchased this mac it looks like they no longer include IDVD. Is there something out there to help me do this. I am new to MAC and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast. -

I have a few problems-I have set up a nice theme with picture and a link to a demo reel of my work.
when I watch it in the preview it all looks good. When I burn a DVD the menu/themes is not there and it starts automatically, but not only that.. it's the wrong movie even though I have the right movie in idvd?
I have been able to burn the CORRECT movie but not in iDVD. However it only plays in mac computers not PC or any DVD player.

Burn DVD without Themes, Menus, etc.
I was able to import an old VHS tape into iMovie very smoothly. Now I want to burn a DVD of that tape that could be played in any DVD player. Just a one-to-one copy--no frills.
When I start a project in iDVD5, it demands that I select Themes, Menus, Buttons, etc. That's not what I want at this time. I just want a clean DVD copy of my original VHS tape. Nothing else.
I can't seem to find a way to do this in iDVD, yet I feel that such a simple action is so basic that it must be an iDVD option.

I thought if I made up a playlist and chose to burn it as MP3 it would just happen. Even after I choose to convert the songs to MP3 I am left with the same message, Only files that are already in MP3 CD format may be burned to an MP3 CD.

In the finder window, under Favorites, I have a burn symbol and a file name for a file that I later deleted from the iMac. It is a TurboTax file. I can not open, get infor, or remove it from the sidebar. The error message is that the file can't be found. I want to delete the burn symbol and file name from Favorites. How can I do this?
Hold down the command key and drag it out of the sidebar.

How to burn DVDs without the graphics?
I'm trying to burn a DVD for a client, with only the video piece on the DVD. However, the iDVD keeps putting up the graphics/themes/whichever you call them, and I can't get them off. I've tried autoplay, deleting the graphics - nothing works! I don't want to lose a paycheck over this, so can someone help me?

If you use iDVD it is quite simple: after creating the iDVD project, open the tree view, where the project is presented as a tree of menus. Drag your movie from the finder to the top (root) node of the tree, and burn the DVD. Your movie will be played just after inserting the DVD in the player, without showing any menu.
