Update Content and Task Sequence Changes are Slow

ConfigMgr 2012 R2
When choosing "Update Content" from the deployment under the Deployment Types tab, the revision number changes but the update takes about 30 minutes to complete. When app testing this is becoming increasingly frustrating. A change made
and then having to wait ~30 minutes is wasting too much time. This delay doesn't always occur. When its working quickly, the pie chart would immediately turn yellow and a few minutes later files would be updated and the Last Update: under the pie
chart would show the current time/date. The packages being tested are all small and being distributed to a couple local DPs over 1GB connections. When triggering "Update Content", the distmgr.log does not display any information about
the distribution of the files until it actually does start which as mentioned earlier starts roughly 30 minutes after triggering "Update Content". Keep in mind it's not exactly 30 minutes. This timeframe is variable.
Also noticed that when an app install was set to disabled in a Task Sequence, when PXE booting, the app was still trying to run. Sometimes an app can be changed to disabled and an immediate PXE boot will not attempt to install the app. This also
applies to enabling a disabled app.
The update content issue would appear to be some type of backlog issue but disabling an app in a Task Sequence seems like it would be more like a DB transaction. Although it seems like two issues, both issues rear their ugly head at the same
time.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi ,
Thanks for the info. When you create a package, the files are copied from the source path to the content library on the site server. Then, the content is copied from the content library on the site server to the content library on the distribution points.

• NG6 update my phone reboots and notification/menu changes are slow/lag. When will an update be released to fix this?

I have already troubleshot this device, it is clear the update is corrupted. I expect an official response with a time frame on a future update to resolve these issues.

I was able to fix mine.
I had the same issue for the past week, random reboots, home screen unresponsive after unlocking. apps crashing. I had tried several fixes including:
Starting in "Safe Mode"
Removed all home screen widgets
Clearing specific program cache (specifically the internal program responsible for the home screen)
Rebooting into "recovery" and trying to clear the cache partition (this involves starting the phone using the home button, volume up button and power button)
Factory reset.
I still had problems after all of these suggested solutions in other threads.
The final solution was to plug my phone in to a windows machine, install the "Upgrade Assistant" program, and then use the Repair option. Since it took quite a while to download the software that was installed, and it appeared to go into the low level phone flashing screen, it probably did more than a factory reset.
I'm curious if the problem was partially a failed update, and possibly not the NG6 update. I noticed that my system menu looks different and Audible, an app I use very frequently appears to have upgraded to a newer version that was not available prior to the "repair". It's possible that my phone has been slightly wrong for some time and this last update exposed all the difficulty.

I recently downloaded the offered update to iPad. Now I have now sound and all my games are slow. Plus, anything with a video while surfing can't be viewed. Does anyone know hat happened and how to fix it?

1. Close all apps in the Task Bar. Double-click the Home button and hold apps down for a second or two. Tap the minus sign to close app.
2. Hold the Sleep and Home button down until you see the Apple Logo.

Hi,
Please provide more information. If the task sequence failed to run, you need to check smsts.log and update logs on the client.

• PXE Boot and Task Sequence slowness

I have been assured that our subnet 10.10.156.x is all 100MB. Yet when I PXE up and run our CM2012 task sequence it takes over 1 hour
just to resolve the task sequence. Forget trying to actually do the OSD since that would take about 6 hours.
Before I go back to networking I wanted to explain what I did to this forum to make sure I did things right.
Our CM2012 server is also our one and only MP. It is also a DP for most of our small company. Our CM2012 server is on subnet 10.10.141.x. Yes, it has a static IP address.
Our 10.10.156.x subnet is in the same phsycal building as the 10.10.141.x subnet. .141 is for servers and .156 is for workstations.
We have a server that holds all of our DHCP scopes. On this DHCP server I found the 10.10.156.x scope. I added the following:
066 Boot Server Host Name: 10.10.141.54 (which is our CM2012 server)
067 Bootfile name: \smsboot\x64\wdsnbp.com
When I go to any workstations on the 10.10.156.x subnet I PXE boot up, it does see 10.10.141.54 and it launches the CM2012 OSD task wizard. But as I said it is slower than glue and un-useable at this time.
Did I setup this up right or do I need to do something else? Or is our networking team full of it?
mqh7

Ok, I did that. I saw no errors and in fact it all looked fine. It just took a long time. so I talked to our top network tech. He said the IP address means nothing. It is all about what the wall Ports are connected too in the
server/network room. So this does appear to be an internal networking problem we need to solve.
last question: If you have 100MB ports is that considered slow for a CM2012 OSD? our .WIM and all installed applications are close to 5GB of data. So is 100MB good or should it all be Gigibit?

• Deploying 100% of available software updates during a task sequence

Hi,
Can somebody tell me if it actually possible to fully patch a computer via an SCCM 2012 task sequence using the install software updates task? If you have managed this can you shed some light on where I'm going wrong? For me, this behaviour is exactly
the same as ConfigMgr07... It simply doesn't work as it should.
I've integrated IE9 into my image and then added in all available updates via offline servicing. My task sequence installs windows, installs Adobe Reader, Office 2010 and Visio Viewer 2010. I then reboot the machine and perform all my patching via the Install
Software Updates task (with it set to 'all'), then reboot again. I do this four times in total.
It downloads and installs some 24 updates in the first instance. The second, third and fourth time it doesn't download or install anything.
When the task sequence completes and the OS first starts up there are 10 updates waiting to be installed (including updates for Adobe Reader and Flash that I have published to the WSUS server via SCUP). After installing those and rebooting there is a single
hotfix available (KB2533552). After installing that and rebooting, .NET4 Client Profile is waiting for me. After that there another nine more updates are available (mainly .NET4). Reboot, .NET4 Framework, reboot 5x .NET4 framework updates.
Why does the software update task not install 'all' updates when that is what I've selected? I have an automatic deployment rule targeted to my OSD and Unknown Computers collections. The rule is set to include Windows 7, Office 2010 and Adobe products with
all update classification types.

I don't have a pause in my script and have not encountered any issues with the scan not finishing before the Software Update installation step. This is true for my B&C TSs which install in the region of 200 updates, including custom trusted publisher
updates from SCUP 2011. So I can't really comment on that side of things.
With regards to the patching side of things: I tried removing the multiple reboot patches from my Task Sequences by excluding them from the Auto Deployment Rules that target the same containers as the task sequences by adding -KBxxxxxx in the ADR. Unfortunately,
due to me having the multiple reboot updates targeted up 'update' collections that are populated by hardware/software DB queries, any PC that is performing a 'Refresh' TS ends up with the offending patches being targeted for install anyway and the TS fails.
For a long time I was just removing the client record from the DB and recreating it so that the offending updates would not be targeted to the client. Once the client has been refreshed, a hardware inventory is performed, the collections updated daily, the
multiple reboot patches are detected and are scheduled for install for the following Friday afternoon. This used to annoy me as I don't like 'incomplete' clients being delivered to users' desktop.
Recently though I've been toying with offline servicing. At first I attempted to integrate every available update but this just ended up killing things too. A number of the updates that can be installed via offline servicing have a .net 4 pre-requisite
but because .net 4 cannot be slipstreamed, the prerequisite is not satisfied, Windows setup fails and so does the TS. So using this method there is a chance you'll end up installing a patch that will kill your image... Still not ideal.
What I have settled on is slipstreaming specific patches into my installation media using dism and then running a B&C TS to update my image.
This is the batch file I use (you'll need to change to suit):
Dism /mount-wim /wimfile:D:\SCCMContentSources\Applications\Microsoft\Windows\7\Professional\SP1\64-bit\Sources\install.wim /index:1 /mountdir:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline
Dism /Image:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline /LogPath:SourceAddPackagex64.log /Add-Package /PackagePath:D:\HotFixIntegration\Hotfixes\64-bit\Updates
Dism /Image:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline /LogPath:SourceAddPackagex64.log /Add-Package /PackagePath:D:\HotFixIntegration\Hotfixes\64-bit\IE
Dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:D:\HotFixIntegration\Offline /commit
The first line mounts the image.
The second line slipstreams the following .msu updates:
kmdf-1.11, KB2526870, KB2529073, KB2545698, KB2561285, KB2574819-v2, KB2592687, KB2617858, KB2670838, KB2726535, KB2729094-v2, KB2786081, KB2834140-v2, KB2847311, KB2855844, KB2862330-v2, KB2862335, KB2864202, KB2868038, KB2876284, KB2883150, KB2884256,
KB2965788, KB2984976, KB917607, KB971033, KB976399, KB977944, KB981750
These are essentially just the multiple reboot patches and their pre-requisites, IE11 prerequisites, and a few KBs that not published to WSUS.
The third line slipstreams IE11 from the IE11 .cab file.
The fourth line commits the changes to the install media.
After running a B&C TS from this modified installation source there are no updates available to freshly deployed images (until the next patch Tuesday!).
Unfortunately this a manual process as I need to check the multiple reboot KB article each time updates are released but it's the only way I can put out 100% patched PCs and have a PC Refresh task sequence that doesn't fail.

• Whats the best way to apply office updates during OSD task sequence with Software Update Agent disabled?

I am trying to update office via the SCCM 2012 R2 OSD task sequence. I know offline updating only updates the core components in the WIM and I'm trying to figure out how to add office updates as well. I am aware of using powershell to try and kick off
a WU scan as seen here:
http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2012/01/24/use-powershell-commands-to-assist-with-patching-during-sccm-image-build/
But the kicker is we don't use SCCM to update the workstations (Solo WSUS install). Is there a way to do this (maybe set the client in the TS to switch on SUP, then off again when it goes off into production) rather than have to build a new image every month?

You could use the ZTI_WindowsUpdates.wsf script from MDT.
http://scriptimus.wordpress.com/2012/03/22/mdt-2012-automating-updates-in-lite-touch-deployments/
How does it work?
The task sequence steps run a script called ZTIWindowsUpdate.wsf. The script uses the
Windows Update Agent API to manage the downloading and installation of updates. All audit information is written to the
ZTIWindowsUpdate.log file. If you find any unusual error codes in your log returned from the API (although I never have) you can compare the codes
here. The script will also check and update the
Windows Update Agent(WUA) as needed at the start.
In its default state, the ZTIWindowsUpdate.wsf script will connect to Microsoft Update then search for and download all available updates including Security Patches, Drivers, Browser Updates and Service Packs. This is essentially the same
as opening the GUI and selecting check for updates.

• OSD HTA and Task Sequence Variable

Have a unusual issue that I cannot seem to find a answer anywhere or if it's even possible. I'm am very aware on how to setup a HTA to pass variables to the Task Sequence but there is a point where I want the HTA to display the current value of a TS Variable(s).
It's a custom variable that is set on a prior step via a VB script. Anyone know of a simple way to call and display the value in HTML/HTA.

The variables are available using the same COM Object that you use to set them: Microsoft.SMS.TSEnvironment. The below VBScript will dump every variable to the screen. You can take this and just add it something you've displayed in your HTA like a static
control or text box.
Set env = CreateObject("Microsoft.SMS.TSEnvironment")
Wscript.echo "Dump of All Task Sequence Variables"
For Each TSvar In env.GetVariables
Wscript.echo "Variable " & TSvar & " = " & env(TSvar)

• SCCM 2012 - Maintenance Windows Issue with Update Deployment using Task Sequence

Hi Guys,
I have a question for you!!
We use a Task Sequence to deploy "Patch Tuesday" security fix; we use the integrated step "Install Software Update" and the Task Sequence run during Maintenance Windows (1 hour).
We notice that the time remaining is not recalculated on every software update installation occur (http://blogs.technet.com/b/csloyan/archive/2010/10/24/maintenance-window-calculations-explained.aspx);
it's correct?
The formula indicated in the link above is not considered in this type of software update deployment (Install Software Update task sequence step)?
Thanks a lot.
David

Hi,
Any update?
Is the time remaining recalculated after each update is installed when using the Software Update Group directly as Torsten said?

Recently the animations for when opening Launchpad and Mission Control have been slower than usual. All the other animations seem to working fine and it's just those two which are the problem. Now whenever I try to open either one of them it would take ages and theres no point opening it at all. Is there a file that I could edit ot is there a Terminal command to speed it up?

Firefox 4 was working fine. Then one day, when I started up Firefox, it says "Proxy is refusing connections." I solved this by selecting "Auto-Detect Proxy" from Advanced network settings, but my changes are not saved and upon every start-up I must select it again! (I even completely removed my webroot antivirus protection, as it as hindering many proxy related programs, but this seems to not be the source of the problem)

You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy"

• I updated Firefox and all my bookmarks are lost; how do I restore them?

I just updated Firefox to 8.0.1., and all my bookmarks are gone. NONE of the suggested articles dealt with this: How do I restore the bookmarks? And why wasn't I asked during the update if I would like to have the bookmarks imported? Also why wasn't I warned that I would lose them all? Thank you.

Use the following to see if you have more than one profile or your lost bookmarks
in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Type about:support into the location bar the click on "Open Containing Folder" that will take you to your current profile. The bookmarkbackups folder has 5 backups (.json files) any of which can be restored with Firefox up through restore bookmarks.
but if you created a new folder see ...next...
=========================================================
(continued...)
Lost passwords, bookmarks, is a profile issue. Sounds like you
created a new profile instead of using your existing profile.
Open your profile folder and go up one level to see if you have multiple profiles ...
: HELP (Alt+H) --> Troubleshooting information... --> "Open Containing Folder" (or type about:support into the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder")
:note the filename, then go up one level to see if you have additional profile folders.
Check the dates of places.sqlite (new in Fx3) for update date just before you went to Fx6 Since it is updated each time you close your session that would be a good place to check.
If you find one then note its filename (the profile name is part of the filename) and then start the Firefox Profile Manager and open with that profile.
To prevent the problem in the future don't let Firefox start up for you after downloading and installing a new version. Instead exit the install at that last point, and restart Firefox in your normal manner.

• Updating XML and not seeing changes reflected

We have a very basic xml that we are using to insert a field into the custom panel. The file is as follows:
<?xml version="1.0"><!DOCTYPE panel SYSTEM "[http://ns.adobe.com/custompanels/1.0 | http://ns.adobe.com/custompanels/1.0]"><panel title="$$$/CustomPanels/Acro/PanelName=TestPanel" version="1" type="custom_panel">group(placement: place_column, spacing: gLargeSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top){ cluster(name: '$$$/CustomPanels/TestPanel/widgetName=Sample Document Type', placement: place_column, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_left, margin_height:10, width : 300, height : 50, child_vertical: align_left) {

Everything appeared to be working correctly until we tried to modify the xml to add additional items. The new items do not appear in the list when modifying the metadata. Do these files get cached? Is there another way we are supposed to be making these changes?

Yes, there is caching.
To force an update to the cache, either:
A) update the modifyDate = "..." line in the manifest.xml.
OR
B) Exit all programs that use File Info, remove the target custom
panel folder from "panels", launch one program, launch FIle Info. The
exit the program, and place the target custom panel folder back into
"panels".
