Update crashes, .dmg files don't work, etc

OK... So I've cleared up a significant amount of memory, roughly 10GB. I've run Disk Utility a few times and still having problems.

I just updated to Adobe Reader 11.0.07 on my Mac OS version 10.6.8 and now the video files don't work.  How do I uninstall the update and return to the previous version?

I received a notice from Chris Campbell at Adobe that stated : "....we are aware that Macs created between 2006 and 2008 are currently running into problems using the latest release of Flash Player (version 13)."  My question is will the update of Adobe Reader 11.0.07 cause this problem with Flash Player 13 on my Mac?  Sometimes when I try to view streaming video I get sound but no video.

after updating to Yosemite remote don't work on iMac

No, the versions of iPhoto on the iPad and on OS X are totally different.
What Apple ID are you using for the Mac App Store? Who else has access to that Apple ID, or what possible other Apple IDs could be in use? It's possible you'll need to purchase iPhoto to get the upgrade, though I'd think Software Update should offer you the correct version.

  • Audio files don't work in FCE

I have clips that I want to use in Final Cut Express that have audio in 48 KHz, 16-bit integer mode.
The FCE manual says "16-bit audio: For video capture and output, 16-bit audio is almost always used"
When I import the clips into FCE and place them in my sequence, I get the dreaded red line over the audio, and I can't seem to "render," so essentially, my clips have no sound.
The default audio settings for my sequence are 48 KHz, 32-bit floating point, about which the FCE manual says "Final Cut Express HD mixes the audio in your program internally at 32-bit, floating-point resolution even if your source audio is 16-bit. The result is that all audio calculations are made with higher precision, maximizing the quality of your program’s audio."
But since my audio files don't work in FCE, something is not right, and I don't know how to change it. The only way to change sequence settings is to load presets, none of which give me contol over the audio settings at this level. How do I get my audio files to work?
    Thanks,
    Rebecca

Ok, so I opened up one of the orignal clips in QT, and clicked on "Export -> Quicktime movie." Under settings, I made sure the compression was DV/DVCPRO NTSC, and the audio was set to 48 KHz, 32-bit floating point. And exported. And then imported the clip into FCE, and it worked! (Even my teacher in my Final Cut class couldn't answer this one for me).
Question is, if all cameras record at 16-bit interger (as the FCE manual says) and FCE requires 32-bit floating point (as it seems to), why doesn't it do the conversion automatically (as the manual suggests, but does seem to actually do)? I guess I don't really need this question answered, since I now have a fix, but I still need to use QT to convert every clip before I can use them in FCE, which is still a pain.
    Thanks,

  • Links to external files don't work

    Hello
Using RH 8.02 and converting linked Word docs (Word 2002) to WebHelp. These are policies and procedures that reference external documents.
In my Word doc I have a hyperlink to an external document. This doc is on a network server. In Word I added the hyperlink and it appeared as a relative path, such as ../RelatedDocs/RelDoc1.doc.
The referenced file is an external file, and I don't want to add it to RH because it may be updated; I just want to link to it so that a user gets the latest version.
When I update the HTML files in RH I see this in my HTML file:
    <a href="file:////terminus/avbase_techsupport/av-base documents/supportmaster/documentationshare/relateddocs/reldoc1.doc">Related Doc 1</a>
This is the correct absolute path for the referenced file. Note the file://// prefix, with four forward slashes.
When I generate WebHelp, the link doesn't work. Nothing happens.
    I tried the following:
    1. Copied the whole path into my Windows Start > Run box and hit Enter. Nothing happens.
    2. Removed two of the forward slashes and copied it again into the Run box. Now the file opens in Word.
I also tried removing the hyperlinks from the Word docs and adding them through RH instead. Same result.
Why does RH add four forward slashes to the prefix? What can I do to get these external links working?
    Thanks for your help.
    Roger Shuttleworth

    Hello Peter
I apologize for taking so long to respond. I just received a new computer with Vista and have had to set it up. Here is what happens:
    1. In Word, I have a doc policy1.doc that contains a hyperlink to reldoc1.doc. The two files are in different folders. When I insert the link, Word shows it as a relative path ../RelatedDocs/reldoc1.doc. When I hover over it in the Word doc, it shows as an absolute path starting with file:///\\theserver, etc.
    2. My RH project includes policy1.doc but not reldoc1.doc. I update policy1.doc in RH. In the HTML topic file (HTML view) the link is:
<a href="file:////theserver/path/reldoc1.doc">Link text</a>. Note the four forward slashes.
    3. I save all project files and generate WebHelp.
    4. In the resultant web page (in Firefox), I click the link in policy1 and nothing happens. The status bar shows the path the same as above.
    5. I navigate to the output !SSL! and find the index page, and open it in Internet Explorer 8. The link shows in the status bar as file://theserver/path/reldoc1.doc, and when clicked IE opens the Word doc.
So in this case Firefox doesn't open the link but IE does.
    Here is another scenario:
    1. I have no links in myWord docs.
    2. I generate topic files in RH using the linked Word docs.
    3. In RH, in the HTML file for policy1 (policy1.htm) I add a link to reldoc1.doc. I choose the file protocol. RH asks me if I want to copy the doc into the project folder, and I say No.
    4. I check the HTML for policy1.htm and see that it has the link as follows:
    <a href="file://J:/Documents/rest of folder path/RelDoc1.doc">Related Doc 1</a>
(Going to Hyperlink Properties shows the same path.) Note the two forward slashes.
    5. I save all files in the project and click Generate Primary Layout (which is WebHelp). A dialog asks if I want to update <some file or other, but I can't see which one because that darned dialog box is too small, but I expect it's policy1.htm>.
    6. I say No. The output is generated and I view it in Firefox. The link works and has a path in the status bar as:
    <a href="file://J:/Documents/rest of folder path/RelDoc1.doc">Related Doc 1</a>
    Note the three forward slashes.
    7. I view the index.htm file in IE and it works.
As a variant of the above, instead of saying No when asked if I want to update the file, I say Yes.
1.The HTML of policy1.htm now shows the link as:
    <a href="file:////server/rest of path/reldoc1.doc">Related Doc 1</a>
Note the four forward slashes again.
    2. The link is as shown in the status bar of Firefox is now set to:
    <a href="file:////server/rest of path/reldoc1.doc">Related Doc 1</a>
    It doesn't work.
    2. The same link shown in IE status bar has two forward slashes (even though the source has four), and it works.
So in answer to your question, the link definitely changes within RH. The two browsers deal with things differently, with IE seeing a file://// link as file://.
Incidentally, I did some research on the file:// protocol and came up with:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_Issues_:_Links_to_Local_Pages_Don%27t_Work
    The answer seems to be:
    1. Add the links within RH.
    2. Don't update when generating output.
    3. If possible, get users to use IE instead of FF.
Either way, it's not very satisfactory for my purposes.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Flash is updated but flash applications don't work when viewed in Firefox, while they work in IE

in several applications, there is a flash application that doesn't work -- flash movies don't play, etc. I checked Tools and it tells me that Flash is loaded and current. I'm stumped. This is a brand new computer.

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Testing_plugins
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Firefox crashes - No crash dump file - No longer works

For some reason, I've had a few problems with Firefox recently. The latest is that each time I try to load it, it crashes straight away, occasionally letting me send an error report, others not. It always comes up with an error that states: Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts. Unfortunately the crash reporter is unable to submit a crash report. Details: The application did not leave a crash dump file.
I've tried restarting my computer in safe mode to see if it works then, but it is coming up with the same error. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, yet nothing has helped at all. I've also got problems opening Chrome and Safari, and now Explorer seems to be the only browser that works on my computer. I've downloaded malwarebytes by recommendation from a family member, yet that isn't finding any viruses/malware on my computer. As that's what I initially thought it could be. As I'm unable to open Firefox at all, I'm unable to obtain any previous crash ID's. I do have the details that come up in the 'Details' box when Firefox says that it has crashed, but unsure whether that would help establish any sort of information to help with the issue. I'm not that technically minded, so if someone could help me out with it, I'd really appreciate it.
I'm stuck using Opera, and it was alright for a while, but now I'm getting annoyed that Firefox isn't working at all. It won't even open.
I really would appreciate the help!

    Do you have Roboform installed?
Do you have a SSO (single sign on) extension installed?

  • Downloaded DMG files don't open.

I have had some trouble lately when downloading DMG files with Safari. In the URL bar I could see it was downloading and then downloaded however nothing happend. Changed to open with DiskUtility didn't do anything. Firewall had no influence. When downloaded with Firefox there was NO problem and everything went fine like it use to do with Safari. So I suspect it is a bug in Safari since this happens with all DMG files of late.

Yes I first looked in my 'Downloads' folder and none to be found. Other download files like mp3 and pdf's no problem, they open straight away and show a little download arrow icon top left in the browser. It's really just DMG files, very peculiar.

  • Some .dmg files don't install, but run program directly.

I am a pc user switching to mac...
Most programs install as you would expect, that is to put an application in the applications folder.
    Some, however, do not.
Picassa for mac from google (http://picasa.google.com/mac/) downloads picasamac.dmg, but it does not install. You click on the icon, and it runs picasa. I have manually copied the .dmg file to the applications folder from download folder. You click on it, it mounts, and you have an icon for the program.
Is this correct? Is it a cheap and dirty alternative installation process?
    Thanks
    bob

Some applications do not require installing in the traditional sense. All you do is open the .dmg file and drag the application to the Applications folder.

  • Keynote 3.0.2 (iWork '06) Files Don't Work in Keynote 4.0 (iDon'tWork '08)

I just got iWork ’08 yesterday, and tried to use a slideshow created in Keynote 3.0.2 with the new Keynote 4.0, and nothing works. The original file is an interactive slideshow of my office work portfolio, and has an initial slide with 40 project photos that are hyperlinked to smaller automatically running slideshows of the specific projects represented by those photos. Within those smaller slideshows are embedded QuickTime movies and separate audio files that often play simultaneously as soundtracks. Timing of the start and end of movies and audio files is usually critical to the sequence of slides. Once the specific project slide show is complete, it automatically returns to the opening hyperlinked slide, so another project show can be selected and played. It all works perfectly in Keynote 3.0.2.
However almost nothing works in Keynote 4.0. The initial hyperlinked photos link to the wrong projects (I have found that it seems to be the next project from whatever the selected slide in the navigator view happens to be, rather than the correct hyper linked project) movies embedded in the automatically running slideshows don’t play, audio files either don’t play or start at the wrong time. Auto transitions between slides don’t always occur so the show sometimes stops (thought the audio sometimes keeps running) and on and on. There are several hundred slides in the whole show, and I haven’t had time to inspect individual transitions, timings etc., and would hate to think of the time necessary to redo the entire show that way.
I’m by no means an expert in Keynote, so I don’t know if there is some version update conversion trick that I’m missing. I sometimes distribute this show on disk to clients who have Keynote installed on their computers, and I wouldn’t want them trying to run it with Keynote 4.0.
Can anyone shed some light on this situation?
Also in a more general sense, I wish that Apple would create a freeware Keynote Player that could be distributed with slideshows and which would play them as they were intended to be played. Kind of like Adobe Reader distributes for pdf files. None of the Keynote exporting options, including html, work for the kind of show I have created.
    Thanks very much.
P.S. I just tried the trick of setting the KN preference to “Allow Exposé, Dashboard and Others to Use the Screen”, and that fixed the playability of QuickTime movies, but audio file timings are still off, skips occur in the audio files and the hyperlinks still go to the next sequential slide rather than the proper link.

What version of the OS are you running? Also, in some cases, running the same presentation on two different computers will yield a change in carefully timed presentations. This is because audio and video aren't "locked" and will drift depending on the speed of the computer/OS. Because there were some changes made to how Keynote handles movies, this MIGHT have an effect on some of your timings there, but I don't think this would cause the widespread mislinking you're seeing.
    zootooz wrote:
I wish that Apple would create a freeware Keynote Player...
If you're displaying on a Mac running fairly recent OS, anyone can download and install the iWork Trial. While it will eventually time out, this trial version can still run Keynote presentations just like the full version can. You just can't save any changes to the presentation.

  • Installed updates today, now things don't work....

Today when I turned on my computer it told me I had a few updates that needed installation. Safari Beta update, an iTunes update, secuity update, and I think a firmware update. During the process of installation after downloading, my computer locked up (not completely, but beach ball locked up), so I did the last thing I should have done and turned it off. Now I can't run Safari, iTunes, or the Software Update from the apple icon. They will bounce once in the scroll list, but nothing happens. Unsure if there is anything else that doesn't work. Oh yeah, tried reinstalling updates manually. Installer doesn't seem to work either. Third party programs all work. Mainly I'm concerned about the "Software Update.." not working.

When you have done what Steve suggested, do this:
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via System Updater in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set System Updater to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • Included files don't work on network paths

I often include css and php files with absolute paths from to
the site root, like this for example:
    <link href="/css/basic.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css" />
... and Dreamweaver has always rendered the page in design
view just as if these included files were part of the current file,
just as it should work. Unfortunately this doesn't work anymore
since I moved all the sites to a network path. Now I have to use
    relative paths, for example:
    <link href="../css/basic.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css" />
... or the page won't render properly (it can't find the
css-files). Why does having the files on a network path screw up my
    sites this way?
    Thanks in advance!

A little update: Instead of using the complete network path
(\\DOMAIN\foo\bar\etc) I mapped a network drive to that directory,
and it works. The problem is that all developers need to have the
same volume letter mapped to this network path, and that's going to
be a problem. I really don't understand why DW can't work with
    network paths.
This is on Windows XP Pro btw.
