Update driver on print server - shouldn't clients get it?

We are having an issue with a Kyocera driver.  We recently started getting new models of some of these Kyocera copiers, and with it a newer version of the same driver.  The new copiers are slightly different.  The driver version went from
5.x to 6.x  We soon discovered that the two don't work well together on the same print server.  Some departments all of the sudden can't print.  The error they get is "can't connect to printer".  As if there is no driver.
On the print server I updated the driver for our printer here in the IT department.  I didn't just update it from the existing printer (Properties>Advanced Tab>New Driver), I instead deleted the printer, recreated it, and used the new driver when
I recreated it.  That worked here in the IT dept.  It does not work in other departments.  A day later they still have the old driver.  Rebooting does nothing.  I got the new driver within 3 minutes of updating it on the server.
Seems like a rights issue.  I give them "manage printer" rights.  Still don't download the new driver.  But... they can all of the sudden print - with the old driver!  Makes no sense.
Under normal circumstances, shouldn't they get the new driver whenever I update it on the server?

Typically the clients will not request the new driver until the next time they perform a print task.
What operating system on the print server and on the client machines?
If server 2008 or greater, is the print driver package aware?  You can see this in PrintManagement.
Are you admin on your own machine?  Are the users that are not in IT admins on their machines?

What operating system on the print server and on the client machines?
On the Server it's 2008 R2.  Clients are all Windows 7
is the print driver package aware?
In Print Management>Server>Drivers, it says "true" in the "packaged" column
Are you admin on your own machine?  Are the users that are not in IT admins on their machines?
I am an admin on my machine.  The non-IT users are not admins.
FYI:  if the user attempts to print, they do not pull the new driver after that.  They still have the old driver

• Reader wont use print driver on print server

I recently posted this question on the user forum, my mistake, I know all the really smart people are over here!
I have developed a print-driver with a very special purpose - it launches an application on the machine on which it is installed - and which also has an electronic signature pad connected to it - and captures a handwritten signature and embeds that into the pdf file just printed, keeping the document in electronic form.
This means that if someone using computer A wants the person using computer B to sign a document, they just print that document to computer B's shared instance of this print driver. For this to happen, the print driver on the server computer must be used.
There is an issue of "client-side" rendering implemented by MS since sometime after windows 2000. This can be disabled (at least turned off) and I have done everything I can do to force "server-side" rendering for this print driver.
However, Reader and Acrobat simply won't honor these settings - in all cases these 2 insist on using the local copy of the driver (which must exist on the local computer too - windows now copies that driver from the server each time the server driver is updated).
ALL other applications that I've tested faithfully send the document to the server's driver (though they also "exercise" the local driver for some reason, I can see this through logging when it is activated - but I cannot see where/why the printing subsystem is making the decision to forward it on).
To recap - other applications faithfully "render" using the server's driver on the server machine, Acrobat and Reader render using the client driver on the client machine.
I am more than willing to develop a print provider, print processor, or port monitor for my print driver - if I knew enough about which one of these is best targeted for this particular problem. It was hair pulling enough to figure out how to do the driver to begin with, this time I'd really appreciate any advice about which one of these I need to tackle rather than spend days developing one realizing I should have developed the other.
Or ... if there is something I need to set in Reader/Acrobat properties OR something in the print driver itself (which is, BTW, based on MS pscript5, i.e., not monolithic) that I might need to do ?
Thanks very much for the help
Nate Clark

Hi,
Have you tried the following steps:
1. Delete the printer from control panel -> printers
2. Open Services.msc and stop and start the Print Spooler service
3. Open Print Management(Open command prompt, type in printmanagement.msc or type print management in to the start menu search box)
4. In Custom Filters -> All Drivers right click the printer driver you want to remove and select Remove Driver Package
Thanks.

• Is the print server over-writing client printing preferences with defaults?

I'm testing a new 2012 R2 print server, and have set the printing defaults by clicking on the printer in Print Management and 'set defaults'.  I used this to set things like double-sided printing etc.
When the printers are added to the test client workstations (manually, not by group policy), we then have to add in some details in printing preferences to authenticate that client to the printer.  A valid access code, and print mailbox that tally with
the same settings on the printer.  It's tedious, but that's what our current printers demand.
What's happening with the new 2012 R2 print server in testing is that it seems to be overwriting these authentication preferences and returning all the printing preferences to the defaults set on the print server.
It's likely that this is a feature or setting that I'm just not aware of, could anyone tell me please how to set those printing preferences as 'first time' preferences that can then be edited on the workstation, and persist?

Would you know of any resource where I could learn all the ins and out of printer management in 2012? A blog/a book/MVA course?
I assume you are using the General tab of the printer properties , then clicking Preferences to set the
Users defaults with the device specific data.
There are two ways to open up the Printing Preferences dialogue for shared printers that I'm aware of.
Open the Print Management console, open the print server, and printers.  (1) Right Click on the printer and Set Printing Default or (2) Right Click on the printer, Properties, then from General Tab click Preferences.
Do changes made via both of those routes have the same affect regarding default settings that are given to the client or is there a difference between them?
I have been using method (1) above, but if there's any difference I'd be interested to know.
When it comes to adding the printers to the clients, there are also two options.  (A) Control Panel, Printers, Add Printer, and add from directory.  (B) In Windows Explorer, browse to the print server and double click the printer name to connect
it.
Is there any difference between those two routes?  I had been using method (B), and then editing the preferences... when then seemed to be overwritten by the server defaults.  Yesterday I used method (A) and so far the printing preferences for
the test clients have not yet been overwritten.

• Airport Express as print-server when a client to a router

I just successfully connected an Airport to my existing wireless network. It is in "client" mode under DHCP.
My goal is to use it as a print-server in my mixed windows and mac network. The printer is a Minolta Magicolor QMS 2300, connected via USB.
Following the Airport directions, I created a new Standard TCP/IP port. I entered the same IP as was assigned to the Airport by my DHCP-serving wireless router.
However... no joy. My print-jobs never seem to get there.
Any assistance would be MUCH appreciated.
Dell 810   Windows XP Pro

Thanks. I'll try that. I did try connecting AX directly to the router, which didn't do anything to help. I gave up when directions said to use Airport Utility to configure, because I assumed AU needed to communicate wirelessly with AX, and my Macs don't have wireless cards. So I'll continue the steps with AU and see what happens. Again, thanks for the hint.

• SSTP problem on Windows Server 2008 r2, clients getting error 0x8007274C

PROBLEM: Clients keep getting error 0x8007274C when attempting to connect to the VPN server using SSTP.
SYMPTOMS:
- L2TP connections works great
--- L2TP connections generate RemoteAccess events in Event viewer, but none whatsoever for the failed SSTP attempts
- Client CANNOT ACCESS
https://vpn.mycompany.net/sra_{BA195980-CD49-458b-9E23-C84EE0ADCD75}
- After several attempts to check and recheck RRAS Setup.  Added IIS Role (much later) just to prove that cert is valid.
--- If server's RRAS service disabled, IIS enabled, client is able to browse to that VPN server, certificate checks out.
http://vpn.mycompany.net &
https://vpn.mycompany.net.
--- However, if RRAS service is running, IIS would not respond to either HTTP nor HTTPS traffic.
--- SSTP won't work whether or not WWW service is running.
- Port Scanner tests to the VPN Server reveals that port 80 & 443 are not open when RRAS service is running and IIS service stopped.
--- But, when RRAS service is stopped and IIS is running, port 80 & 443 responds.
--- Not sure whether 443 is supposed to be open when only RRAS is running.

- vpn.mycompany.net certificate installed in Local Computer > Trusted Root CA
- SSTP Client connecting to FQDN vpn.mycompany.net
- Windows Firewall is DISABLED  (for testing purposes)
- No Anti Virus nor Anti Malware protection running  (for testing purposes)
- Can access other HTTPS sites

SERVER (Windows 2008 Svr r2; Roles: DNS, AD, RRAS):
============================================================================
- 2 NICS (1 bound to an internal IP, 1 bound to an external IP addr)
-- External NIC bound to a valid ISP IP Address, with a FQDN vpn.mycompany.net
- Windows Firewall Service on Server DISABLED
- No other device in front of the external IP addr NIC
- IPV6 on RRAS DISABLED
- NO RRAS Inbound/Outbound filter at all
- Windows Firewall Service disabled
- Using external Certificate Authority
- Certs bound to port 443 seem to match in registry key HKLM\...\SstpSvc\Parameters
It seems that the VPN server is simply not accepting the SSTP traffic.  I don't think we've even gotten to certificate negotiation.
Been trying for a few days now, have consulted many SSTP online resources (MS and others) before posting.
Am stumped.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm in the exact same situation and for once google is of no help. I have tried to get a simple connect through to my server (by using "telnet vpn.myserver.com 443") but it will only timeout. After deactivating the Windows firewall on the VPN box (which
is a virtual machine on a Hyper-V R2 SP1) I can locally telnet the VPN box and even get the special url (https://vpn.myserver.com/sra_{BA195980-CD49-458b-9E23-C84EE0ADCD75}/) to work. But this only works on the VPN box itself, no other server or client is
able to contact it. I have tried to connect from another server sitting next to the vpn box and in the same subnet (public IPs) but couldn't connect either. PPTP and L2TP connections are working but not SSTP. Another approach was to manually bind the http.sys
to specific IPs. No change. I'm fresh out of ideas. Anyone? regards, ck

• 10.5 server, 10.4 clients getting multiple mobile accounts - weird results

I would like to reopen this discussion:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1664772&tstart=7
What happens visually is that the user appears to log in to a network account, but the Macintosh HD icon changes to the "house" used for the home directory, and all the mobile account data (which is naturally in /Users/<login>) is not accessible. If you use Netinfo Manager or System Preferences, you can see multiple accounts for the user.
We have been getting many laptops randomly succumbing to this bug. 10.5.8 server, 10.4.11 clients. I ran nicl on one that was affected today, with "nicl . -list /users", and found 3 user account records with the same login. I then used the "directory IDs" from the nicl -list commands and compared the data for each account with "nicl -v . -read <dirID>" replacing <dirID> with the numeric directory IDs for the accounts.
One of the accounts had no "home" attribute, so I deleted it using "sudo nicl . -delete <dirID>". The only difference between the other accounts is the value of the "copy_timestamp" attribute (it differed by 20 seconds or so). I blindly removed the record with the later copy_timestamp value, after which I was able to login to the mobile account normally.
Interestingly during the login, I pinged the machine rapidly over ssh, running the "nicl . -list /users" command. I could see the original directory ID. Then for a while a new directory ID appeared and the old one was gone. Then both the old and the new appeared. Finally, after the successful login, the old directory ID was back. I guess the mobile account login process is constantly banging on Netinfo.
Another thing to note is that when I go to Workgroup Manager (10.5) and bring up the Mobility > Acount Creation preferences, they show up with the "Never" and "Always" buttons half-selected ("-"), as well as the one for the "Show "Don't ask me again" checkbox" setting. Guess the com.apple.MCX.plist file schema changed from 10.4 to 10.5. I will research the differences. Maybe I'll get lucky and stop this behavior from happening...

The thing that causes the "-" half-slected buttons on the Account Creation tab is the absence of a value for the (new in 10.5?) attribute in the com.apple.MCX plist file. You can find this by using the Inspector in Workgroup Manager, getting the user account and editing the MCXSettings attrbute:
cachedaccounts.WarnOnCreate.allowNever
otherwise known as "Show Mobile Account Dialog's Never Option" if you look in the Details tab of Workgroup Manager,
otherwise known as "Show "Don't ask me again" checkbox" if you look in the Account Creation tab of Workgroup Manager.

• Windows 7 client can't connect to Server 2008 R2 Print Server VM (ESXi 5.5)

I have an issue today that is driving me bonkers.
I recently came on-board to a company in my area as the system administrator and this network has everything and the kitchen sink wrong with the network layout, probably the worst I've seen and I'm slowly but surely fixing it day by day.....
Well today I decided I was going to spin up another VM from a template and make a Print Server, seems harmless right? --- I thought so too, added all of the printers to the server and did test pages, all was dandy, but then I tried to add the printers to
clients and other server and the real fun has begun, I'm truly perplexed now...
I added a VM to my esxi 5.5 cluster at work that is a 2008 R2 server with only print management on it. I can map all of the printers on the network to the print server as-well as install the drivers correctly and I can resolve the IP and server name via
DNS. I can test printers directly from the print server successfully printing out test pages however whenever I try to map printers you know from the directory in 'devices and printers' from any of the Windows 7 clients or any of the other 2003/2008 servers
I get the classical "Windows cannot connect please check the network connection and make sure sure the printer is turned on". I disabled the windows firewall and I made the point to print GPO set to disabled and still no luck. Again I can print to
all of the printers internally inside of the VM (so I know it communicating to all of the printers), I just can't connect to the printers listed in the directory on any of external desktop/client, it's like so annoying. spent about 6 hours until my brain just
couldn't think anymore, was about to go BS on the VM.
The only thing I can think of, as I was driving home, is that there is a GPO on one of the DC that has a desginated print server policy set. But prior to last week the forest leve was 2000 and now it's 2003. I just don't know Server 2000 enough to know if GPO's
worked in the same way they do in 2003.
Right now printers are connected to other servers in a ad hoc mentality it seems, there has never been a true print server.
Anyone ever have this problem before?
I'm truly puzzled...

Hi Mid.Hudson-IT,
Before we begin ,we should ensure we have configured the printer server correctly .
Here is a link for reference of configuring the printer server .
Print server role: Configuring a print server
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc775791(v=ws.10).aspx
"I can map all of the printers on the network to the print server as-well as install the drivers correctly and I can resolve the IP and server name via DNS"
From this sentence ,I can`t figure out whether you have tried to ping the server both with the IP adress and name adress from the client ?
If we can ping the print server from the client,we can ensure the connection to the printer server is good .
Then we can try to install the printer driver directly to have a check .In the adress bar of Windows Explorer ,input "\\server name \the printer name"
If we cannot ping the print server ,we should troubleshoot the network issue firstly.
We also can check the event viewer for more information to troubleshoot this issue .
Best regards

• Mac OS 10.6 Print Server slow performance to Xerox Phaser 3600

Hi,
I have a client who has numberous printers captured on a Mac OS X 10.6 Server with print services running which works fine with every printer except for a Xerox Phaser 3600 (small A4 mono postscript printer) in that print jobs sent to it via the print server take upto 5 minutes to printer. If the client computers print direct then it is fine and very speedy.
Below is some more detail and any help or suggestions with this would be greatly appreciates.
• Printer server is a MacMini running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 v1.1
• Xerox 3600 printer is a small A4 mono postscript printer.
• Printing direct to printer is instant, via the print server can take up to 5 minutes.
• The print server has various other printers setup and they are not experiencing the same performance problem.
• The print server is using the LPD protocol but they have tried the IPP protocol and again it is slow.
• When they send a job to print it remains in the users local print monitor and the servers print monitor for up to 5 minutes.
• The Xerox printer is running the latest firmware update.
• The print server is using a Xerox downloaded driver as opposed to one of Apple OS shipped drivers.
• Checked Xerox compatibility list and this printer is fully supported in 32bit and 64bit applications.
• Restarted printer.
• Test jobs have been small TextEdit plain text tests.
Thanks in advance
Anton

• Printing through Linksys Wireless Print Server

Ok.. Here is the question.
I have a Linksys Wireless Print Server (WPSM54G) which is connected to a Canon MX700. In windows this works great. However I cannot get OS X (10.5.2) to print to the printer.
The print server (with firmware update 1017) supports IPP, LPR, and some other printing protocols.
I have also pulled down the CUPS driver from Canon's site for the printer.
At this point I am stuck in getting this working.
Has anyone out there successfully gotten this wireless print server to work with OS X?
If so, what is the trick?
Thanks.

I hope you're right about supporting the industry-standard protocols after a firmware update - because this print server didn't support those before...
With the industry-standard protocols IPP and LPD, a queue name is a part of the address to direct data to the port on the print server. Do you know the queue name (also called port name in some documents) for this print server, so you can enter it in print & fax prefs?

• Usb print server maybe wireless

We have two windows computers with attached printers. With our MBP we tried sharing either the canon Pixma mp830 or the HP PSC 700 but the results were I used windows printing with a "closest" match driver which seemed kind of goofy. I am thinking of adding a print server to the network so we dont have to have a pc on to print. Does it really matter what brand I get (of course I will get something like hp etc) to work with the apple, I am hoping with the print server that I can get more features of the printers than using windows printing?
Kihei

Beberas,
I'm not sure why you would have problems with that particular print server, being unfamiliar with it.
But, I can tell you about the Airport Express
Your profile mentions you have a G5 tower (do you also have a Macbook Pro, and that's why you are posting here??). If there is already an Airport card installed in it, you will not need another. If you have a Macbook Pro, it already has an Airport card.
The Airport Express would allow both wired and wireless printing, and it will do so seamlessly. As far as the AE is concerned, there will be no need for drivers, but you will need drivers for the various printers that are connected (I'll talk more about that).
Whether you want wireless connections, wired, or a mix of both makes no difference. If you want to go exclusively wireless, your Macbook Pro is ready, but your tower may not be. If you need an Airport card, it would be for the tower. The AE will either join an existing wireless network, or connect directly to the router via ethernet; your choice. If it is connected via ethernet, it could serve as a wireless "bridge" to the wired network, if you like (I am also unfamiliar with your router, and whether or not it is wireless).
Now, let's talk about printers and drivers. You should already have drivers for most popular printers installed with OS X. If the drivers for all your printers are present, any connected printers will be automatically recognized via Bonjour, and they will show up in your list of printers.
If you don't have the drivers for one or more printers, all is not necessarily lost. You might be able to find OS X native drivers on the manufacturer's website. If not, it is likely that OS X native drivers for a similar printer from the same manufacturer will work, but perhaps without all of the printer's features. I have a laser Samsung laser printer that works this way, and it works flawlessly (I had to find an appropriate, but not "dedicated," driver on the Samsung website).
Even if no appropriate OS X native driver exists, it still might be possible to use the printer. You see, OS X uses "CUPS," the Common UNIX Printing System. Using CUPS, it is possible to print to almost any printer, provided you can find a "Printer Description File" for that printer. That's all CUPS needs, in most cases, to print to that device. Again, all features might not be available, but CUPS can turn an otherwise useless printer into an asset.
In general, if you can print to something that is connected directly to your Mac, you can print to it through an Airport Express.

• Mac Printing with a printer server and Windows XP desktop

I have the following configuration:
Dell Desktop running XP
Apple iBook G4 running 10.4
Linksys Router
Linksys Print Server
I can't get my iBook to print through the print server. I have tried IP Printing and provided the printer server IP Address and correct printer driver "HP LaserJet 1012 Foomatic/hpijs (which I think is now part of 10.4). When I try to print I get the following message, "Printer Busy; will retry in 10 sec. I have also had Connecting to 192.168.1.78 on port 630... and nothing happens.
Any suggestions? I am at wits end because nothing is working. I know that my wireless router and print server are working because I ping'd them from the PC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On windows, the setup software fills in required info like print server queue name - but we don't have that software on the Mac.
Look in the print server manual and check the supported protocols - LPD and IPP require a queue name which you can find in the manual. HP Jetdirect protocol doesn't need a queue name, and is called TCP/IP raw or socket 9100 printing in some manuals.
Good luck.

• DPR-1260 Print Server

I am trying to setup my new DPR-1260 print server and it works find with my work windows machine but I can not seem to get it to work with my home MacBook Pro. It is talking (I think) back and forth between the print server and the laptop but I can not seem to pick the right printer driver. I have a Canon MP500 and it is working fine if hooked up directly through a USB port, but the print utility does not show it when I try to add the print server (LPD to a IP address and port). How can I find the MP500 driver through the printer utility program?
Help!!!
iMac (G4), MacBook Pro, iPod Mini, iPod Nano Mac OS X (10.4.7) Firewire Disk

I just bought the same print server and can't get it set up in OS X at all.
I've tried LPD and IPP with the correct queue name, but it won't take the printer.
The printer is an HP PSC 1315xi (shows up as 'psc1310'). The PrintFab CUPS driver doesn't have my printer and I used some "Foomatic / hpijs" driver for Linux which doesn't work either. Windows looks like its using IP printing, but in OS X, I can't figure out where the correct driver is and the HP software installed is using some "HP All-In-One 4.0" driver that only shows up when the printer is installed via USB. I can't find it otherwise.
I've tried the CUPS interface with lpd://0.0.0.0/psc1310 and lpd://0.0.0.0:9100/psc1310 -- 0.0.0.0 is just an example. I've also tried ipp in the same configuration. I'm thinking it might just be a driver, but I've tried the generic DeskJet drivers and they don't work either.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

• Connecting Mac Pro to two (2) PCs for a print server

I would like to be able to use a PC with windows xp on it as a print server. I can get the mac's print to flash on the print server's screen, but as soon as that happens the printer dialog is stopped. What am I missing?

Yes. It is possible.
I have it at work. Internal video media and internal company LAN.
One is at 192.x.x.x. the other at company range.
Also used on XSAN for external and internal metadata. That is why there are 2 NIC's.

• Can hp officejet pro l7680 print using dp-g310 print server

hello.  I'm trying to set up my hp L7680 all-in-one printer to print wirelessly using the dlink dp-G310 print server, but I keep getting the following message:"your computer appears to be configured correctly, but the device, or resource(192.168.0.10) is not responding."  First, can anyone tell me if what I'm trying to do is possible, and second, how to do it.
Thanks.

This seems like the same problem I have with the OfficeJet Pro 8500 I purchased today. I bought this to replace the OfficeJet 5510 which completely stopped working once the upgrade was made to Snow Leopard.
I can print perfectly ok from the computers we have (all running Snow Leopard) over an ethernet network but when I try to send a document as a fax, the "send fax" button in the print dialog box just remains grey.
I have rebooted the computers, rebooted the OfficeJet and re-installed the HP software - all with no change or improvement.
Maybe I have lost the plot like CdaveC and need some pointers.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

and I do something below:
1. copy a new oraclebarcode.jar into my computer.
2. change the regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLEHOME1\REPORTS_CLASSPATH,
add a new path that the oraclebarcode.jar was.
3. import java class
