Update from apple software - seems to have broken displays

I have just taken delivery of my mac pro (felt like christmas) - ran through the setup all of 6 minutes (eat your heart out Bill) - ran software update as it popped up to get it up to latest settings etc..
now monitors do not work they flash on and off and display signal not detected every three to four seconds then come on then go black etc.. and it continues
they setup from the base installation was sweet and this only started after the update ran and rebooted
i can't seem to find any detaisl on a rollback feature or after zapping pram and disconnecting everything and rebooting still no change
any ideas
monitors are benq 22" in res 1680X1050 and as i said they were working brilliantly till the update ran
any help appreciated - think it might be re install of system software to get it back to original settings

You might want to add more details in "Computer Model Information" lines.
Is there any source of interference nearby?
The Mac Pro - does it run on a dedicated line / circuit? UPS and/or line conditioner? It shouldn't be putting a real tax on the circuit, unless it is shared with a lot of equipment. They've been known to push the limits for some.
I've seen more than a couple threads reporting problems with ViewSonic (gladly my LCD VGA is older and seems safe).
Are they running off X1900 Radeon?
Sometimes a system ships and even DIMMs can be loosened, maybe video card needs to be reseated?
Hopefully it is just a loose cable somewhere.

  • Installed updates FROM apple. Now I have a kernel panic

Ok, I tried to install my updates from apple. Now my Macbook just says i need to re start. I have tried to just re install the OS. It is not even allowing me to do that. It says kernel version. Darwin kernel version 9.5.1 Attempted to get Macbook fixed, but like most people, I don't want to drop $250 on the problem if i can fix it on my own. ANY help is appreciated.

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Repair permissions and then run the Repair Disk option from your install disc.
Instead of installing from Software Update, go to Apple's download site & download the rest of the downloads manually. For the OS, download the combo version.
Repair permissions after the installations and restart your computer.

  • Firefox update 3.6.15 seems to have broken all addons

Since I update to the most recent firefox (3.6.15), all my addons are broken. In the addon tab, they say that they're enabled, but I can't click on the preferences buttons of any of them. Some of them display a green exclamation point, but the ones that don't are still broken. At the top of the addons tab, it says "Restart Firefox to complete your changes" but if I restart, it still says that and it didn't update them.
I've tried updating several of them manually, but they don't update and they don't work. The addons don't appear anywhere in my browser at all; for instance if it's a toolbar, there's no toolbar and no option to get the toolbar when I right click. If it's a button on my main bar, it's gone, and when I go to "customize" the button is still not available.
I've googled this a bunch and am not seeing anyone with my problem.

my apple tv seems to have hung up during the latest software update - what should I do now?
I have not turned it off but it has been stuck in the same spot for 30 minutes now and I'm not sure what to do next since the screen says to NOT turn it off until done. Please help.

If it hangs much longer you may need to disconnect and then grab a micro USB to restore through iTunes

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Just updated the latest Epson software printer update from Apple. Now all my prints look solarized. How do I get rid of the new update and go back to the perfect prints I had before? Help please.

Just updated the latest Epson software printer update from Apple. Now all my prints look solarized. How do I get rid of the new update and go back to the perfect prints I had before? Help please. Wasting ink and paper at the moment!!!!!!
I have tried the printer with my laptop (not updated) and everything is fine. It's just the beautiful 27" Imac that can no longer print.

Might be a corrupted printer preference file ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
Move the com.apple.PrinterPrefs.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac, restart the printer...

  • Update seems to have broken openbox theming.

I updated about 2 hours ago and it seems to have broken a lot of my window manager.
I use openbox as a standalone window manager and have had no issues so far.
I update every few days and today caused the resizing-freeze issue, so I downgraded the suggested packages which fixed that.
However I have another issue with theming.
Programs such as firefox, thunderbird, thunar etc... all have the correct theme. However I use some gnome programs such as rhythmbox and nautilus and neither of these are themeing correctly as well as terminator and all appear to have the default gnome theme.
I use obconf and lxappearence for themeing normally, however these seem to have no effect.
I've done a fair amount of searching and googling and am now very tired and am going to bed.
If anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated. If I am being stupid in my sleep deprived state please feel free to point it out XD.

    Hi all. I'm also running Openbox and have done the following so far;
    1. Installed gnome-themes-standard. Created a new folder ~/.config/gtk-3.0/; Created the file in the folder "settings.ini" with the following code;
    [Settings]
    gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme = true
    gtk-theme-name = Adwaita
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
Thanks to the info on the thread here
    2.  Checked out the post here. Downloaded the tar of Adwaita from this.page and did the usual "makepkg -s" magic and rebooted.
What I'm now getting is nm-applet in tint2 with the dark theme of Adwaita which is great but doesn't really match my dark theme axiomd but it's better than before.
What I'm wondering is how to manage this in lxappearance, change font etc?? If I select the theme Adwaita it's a light theme? Having looked in the directory there is both gtk-2.0 (i think this is the light one?) and gtk-3.0.
I've also noticed that it is affecting rhythmbox; slow to load and the status icon setting in the plugins is missing, so you close the GUI and find the app quits rather than the previous behaviour where it would close but the notification icon would still run in tint2 enabling one click control access to the GUI again.
I appreciate this is obviously a new implementation and will take a bit of time to learn but any tips from those in the know would be great!? TIA.

  • Updates from Apple result in white screen, have to reinstall thru time machine, 4hrs.

    I have a Mac 21.5, OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Processor: 3.06 GHz; intel Core i3
    Memory 4 GB 1333MHz  DDR3
If I do an update from Apple I end up with the White Screen of Death. I restore thru Time Machine and this takes about 4hrs.  I have to turn off,  unplug everything then plug everything back in, power up while holding "shift" "command" "r" and "p", keeping my finger on power button till I get an option screen with 4 choices.  I've found, restore with Time Machine the best choice.  It takes two people to hold the keys and power up.  I don't know why this happens, hoping for some ideas.  There has to be an easier and faster way to restore. I currently have an update pending, 10.10.3, I just did 10.10.2 Saturday (04-11-15) and had to go through all of the above to get update and eliminate "white screen" to restore.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all my music (Cds that I had downloaded into itunes) except the once I had purchased from the itunes store. Can anyone help? Do you know what might have happened?

After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all the music that I had downloaded from my Cds. It was a lot of music! All I still have is the music that I had purchased in the itunes store. And before you asked. No, I did not have a backup. Never got around to do it.
Does anyone of you have an idea if and how I can maybe get my music back?
Your help is very much appreciated. Would it help if I recover my computer from an earlier date?? I am not even sure if I make sense here.

Hi - I seem to have a similar problem. I was prompted to update to iPhoto 11 yesterday (don't know why yesterday, I'm in iPhoto all the time). So I followed the instructions, library updated, all existing events and albums are there. I uploaded some more pictures and created a few new albums and did some new year spring cleaning, moving stuff around etc. And I started making a calendar.
I've opened it up today, my calendar is still there as are all the new events, but the pictures are empty outlines. If I open up a picture I just get the "!" but I can still see the thumbnails showing in the slider in the bottom - I don't know if that means the source files must still be there somewhere, or if it just means it captured thumbnails yesterday.
I've gone into it via "show package contents" and there just don't seem to be any masters for an upload yesterday. I also just had a look in the last import folder, because of a comment from someone above. As I scrolled down through the folder the images were there and literally disappeared in front of me - by which I mean, the thumbnails were there as I scrolled down and then would turn into empty outlines...!
All my old folders are still there, thankfully (although they're of course the ones that are also all safely back up).
Although I have a timecapsule, my photo library is too big to keep on my hard drive, so I keep it on an external drive - so it only gets backed up when I do it manually (thanks Apple for that, I will never understand why it was designed to work - or not work - that way). So if the pictures have been lost then they are gone for good which is super-frustrating (I just got back from South Korea and was in the middle of sorting out all my shots from that trip).  It seems that this can only have happened because of the update - I should have known better than to have pressed yes.
If you have any ideas, I'd be most grateful!
    Regards
    R

I have an HP Printer/scanner, and since upgrading to Mountain Lion I can no longer scan on my HP.  HP tells me that I can get an upgrade app from 'Apple Software Upgrade' .  Does anyone know how to do this?

HP couldn't find its own apps with both hands and a flashlight.
As of Lion all scanning functions are incorporated natively in OS X. You can scan three ways:
Use Preview: File > Import from scanner
    Use Image Capture
(Preview and Image Capture are both in your Applications folder.)
System Preferences > Print & Scan. Select your HP and use the Scan tab.
If you have HP's "Image Zone" software installed, you no longer need it and it no longer works anyway.

You can't have content in iCloud without having it on your phone, you will need to look at deleting items from your device that you don't need. Movies and TV shows from iTunes are possibly a good start because they tend to be large and can be redownloaded at a later date.
