Update from build 9860 to 9879 breaks permissions

After windows 10 applied the update from Build 9860 to 9879, I have experienced a host of problems that appear to be due to broken filesystem permissions caused by the update process itself -:
# Onedrive keeps crashing when asking to configure itself
# Modern UI apps all fail to load with the "application does not support the contract specified" or stating Windows cannot find ""
Trying to fix the filesystem permissions also seems to make things worse -:
# You cannot change/modify permissions at all on C:\Program Files
# Trying to restore the C:\Users permissions as suggested in a Miscrosoft document to fix Modern UI apps causes even more permission problems, such as Internet explorer not functioning. I have had to give my user account explicit full control on the
folder to even be able to use the PC at all.
It would be good if Microsoft could provide a "FixIt" to correctly set the permissions on these locations, but more importantly fixed the update process to not break them in the first place.

I did a reinstall which was working OK - until I installed the visual studio c++ runtime(s). I have installed the 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013 ones but am unsure which has caused this breakage but am now getting the same contract messages and am
unable to launch any metro apps again?

Assuming that you have all windows updates installed.....
Would you care to do a clean install by downloading build 9879 Enterprise ISO, burn it to a bootable DVD or Flash Drive and then install ? Enterprise version has everything in a non- enterprise version plus a few extra features geared towards business
people. You don't have to use them at all.
I am using it now ...... in my home computer.

    Hi theking2,
There seems to be a little problem between Windows setup Wizard and the device driver's communication.
You may check at the lenovo official website and see if they could offer any further assistance.
Besides, how you installed the drivers?
For the current situation, you may take a try to refresh the current build using the downloaded ISO file, or try a clean install of Windows 10 9926 build.

  • Update to build 9860?

I assume there is going to be a realease of the build 9860 for the server preview as well, like the client. I see in PC Settings no option, will it be a new iso, or package through regular Windows Update?

    Hi,
According to my test, it seems like the PC settings in windows server preview can not work correctly.
Please focus on the MS official website.

  • Can't update to build 9860

    Hello!
I have downloaded the update this afternoon, but I can't install it. No error, or something like that. I start the installing (PC settings-->Preview Builds), wait ~20-30 seconds and Windows says - please restart. Ok, I make a restarting, and nothing happens.
When I start it installing again, the same thing happens all the time.
    Any solution?

Try run Windows Update (not build update) , first and if any update remains, install them and then restart your PC and try run build update again.
If problem persist, report it through feedback form.

    Hi alpha45,
Similar issue has been discussed in forums for many times.
After the upgrade, users may encounter two logon picture, or there is no logon screen, no place to enter the password. Sometimes
switch user could bring the logon screen back, usually folks do a PC refresh, which would get the logon screen to work normally.
Please take a try to switch user or Refresh the PC, and then check if issue insists.

  • [Forum FAQ]Tips on Upgrading Windows 10 Technical Preview from Build 9841 to 9860

The new Build 9860 for Windows 10 Technical Preview has been released recently. Here, I would like to share some experience on upgrading Windows 10 Technical Preview from Build 9841 to 9860.
Tip 1: How to use Refresh option to upgrade.
    Scenario
In order to upgrade to Build 9860, the new preview build should be downloaded firstly:
    PC settings-> Upgrade and recovery->
Preview builds, which is as shown below.
If there are multiples PCs which are running Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9841 need to be upgraded, you may just want to use one copy of downloaded preview build to upgrade all of them instead of downloading the new build on each PC.
    Solution
If you have upgraded one PC from Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9841 to 9860, the downloaded preview build (install.esd) can be used to upgrade other PCs. Here we can use install.esd to export the install.wim, then this intall.wim can be used as a recovery
    image.
Step 1: Understand the basic information about install.esd.
Install.esd file is located at C:\ $WINDOWS.~BT\sources folder at first. When the upgrade is finished, it would be copied to
C:\RecoveryImage folder. Here is the information in setupact.log which contains information about setup actions during installation:
    2014-10-28 19:03:38, Info SP Moving file D:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Install.esd to D:\RecoveryImage\Install.esd
What’s more, the command Dism /Get-Wiminfo /Wimfile:<path_to_install.esd> is used to display the information about the file install.esd:
Step 2: Export the file install.wim.
The following command is used to export Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9860 image:
    Dism /Export-Image /SourceImageFile:<path_to_install.esd>
    /SourceIndex:4 /DestinationImageFile:<path_to_install.wim> /Compress:recovery
Step 3: Copy exported install.wim to other Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9841 computers, and set the recovery image.
For example, the install.wim has been copied to C:\image folder, the following command is used to set the recovery image:
    Reagentc /setosimage /path C:\image /index 1 /target C:\Windows.
Step 4: Use Refresh option to upgrade your PC.
    Go to
Update and recovery setting under PC settings, choose
Refresh your PC without affecting your files:
    Note:
    Applications needed to be reinstalled.
System would use the exported install.wim to refresh Windows 10 Technical Preview from Build 9841 to 9860:
Note: If you use install.esd to refresh directly, just need point the index location as 4:
Reagentc /setosimage /path C:\image /index 4 /target C:\Windows. However, install.wim is easier for deployment, such as creating bootable USB, WDS and SCCM deployment.
Tip 2: Workground to upgrade native boot VHD.
    Scenario
Many users use the method native boot into VHD to test Windows 10 Technical Preview. However, there is a limitation on native boot when using VHDs:
If you boot from a VHD, you cannot upgrade the Windows version in the VHD to a newer version. This article describes how to upgrade VHD system Windows 10 Technical Preview from Build 9841 to 9860.
    Solution
    Step 1: Upgrade in Hyper-V.
Use Hyper-v to create a new virtual machine, and use your native boot VHD
as an existing virtual hard disk:
If booting from this virtual disk directly, it would fail to start due to lacking of boot files. You can use Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9841 ISO file to repair the startup issue:
You can boot intosystem successfully in Hyper-v, then the upgrade process would be supported.
Step 2: Create Native Boot to VHD.
When the upgrade is finished, shut down the virtual machine, use the same way to create Native Boot to VHD:
Mount the 9860 native boot VHD file.
Use the following command to create boot entry for VHD system: Bcdboot
v:\windows (v: represents the mounted virtual disk drive letter).

    Hi Arman mohseni,
From my observation, if I click download now, it would create a BITS task:
We can use following command to check:
    Import-module bitstransfer
    Get-bitstransfer –allusers
From the output, we can see the system account created a BITS job for transferring, under the C:\Windows\Software Distribution\download, we can get the temporary downloaded file, which is approximately about 2.5G.
After we restart, and go to C:\Windows\Software Distribution\download, the temporary file is gone.
If I click the download again, the BITS would create a new task, a new temporary file, if we compare the JobIds of the two times downloading, they are totally different.
On the other hand, if we download a windows update, the JobId would be kept, and the temporary files would be kept, too.

  • AIR 2 Linux .rpm - breaks with updated software builds

    Hello Everyone,
We are bundling the AIR 2 .rpm installer in our software builds for use on RedHat 5.x using the following code:
    if [ -x "/usr/bin/Adobe AIR Application Installer" ]
              then
"/usr/bin/Adobe AIR Application Installer" -silent -eulaAccepted -desktopShortcut -programMenu -location $dest_dir/help $src_code_dir/Help.air
    Problem:
On a fresh install, everything comes up roses.
The problem occurs on subsequent installs of software builds. When I install an updated software build (that includes the above code), AIR does not install "failed due to bad configuration"and the AIR file is unavailable and grayed out in the software (though it works fine on fresh installs).
    Fix Attempts:
When I deleted the AIR file from the previous build and tried to install a build it did not work, "failed consult log".
When I deleted the AIR installer via Package Manager then installed a subsequent build, the AIR file installed and was accessible from the software. But it deleted exisiting AIR files on my desktop that were not affiliated with the software build.
    Questions:
What can I do to get AIR files from subsequent builds (that include the above code for the AIR 2 .rpm) to work in the software?
If the AIR installer needs to be removed prior to a subsequent installation, how can I remove the installer while protecting local AIR files that are not affiliated with the software.
    Thanks,
    Lydia

  • Unable to update to Build 9879

    Hi,
Can someone please assist.  When I go to PC Settings, Update and Recovery and click on Preview builds and Check Now, I get the message that there are no new preview builds available.  I am running the Enterprise build of Windows 10 Technical Preview.
    Regards,

    Hi David,
Thanks for the proposal.  By default the setting is set to Fast.  I have tried both settings and still receive the same message.  Could it be something on my work proxy server?
EDIT:  Seems that the update to build 9879 for Windows Technical Preview for Enterprise was not released.  I change some registry settings to test this theory and I immediately got the New Preview build available message.
EDIT: Switched back the registry entries and now it's downloading the latest preview.
    Thank for the assistance.
    Regards,
