Update iChat 4.0 to 4.0.3

How do I update iChat from 4.0 to 4.0.3
I had to reinstall the app from the Leopard disk.

I found the problem a couple of hours ago purely by accident, because Spotlight and Find were no help. iChat 4.0 said there was a 4.0.3 version somewhere, because it had it in the "use this version" pull down. So I don't know what made me look but the new way to really refresh 10.5.3 other than rerun the Combo installer over it, is to do an Archive & Install. Weeellll . . . . come to find out all the "refreshings" I have been doing to the system have been on the "Previous Systems" folder and not the actual current/Blessed System folder. So I found what Spotlight and Find couldn't and that was the 4.0.3 version that iChat saw which was in the PS Applications folder and not in the "Blessed" Applications folder where it belonged.
So I did a CCC backup, I don't trust TimeMachine at all anymore - that is what got me into this mess in the first place, that took a while, then erased the PS folder, restart in Safe Boot, and applied the 10.5.3 Combo (Always use a Combo Updater!) and now 3 hours later at 5:30 am, I'm typing this from my newly and what seems to be fully updated system. Things are moving better, feel more stable and when people start arriving at their offices I can try iChat (v4.0.3) to see if it works. That will be a true test. Also if TM works. I didn't check versions prior to the last update, but the fact that things were not properly updated could have been the reason that TM failed.
Fingers crossed.
So I wasn't going Nutz after all!!!!!! I'll have to call my Tech Rep at Apple and let her know that I'm just Normal Nutz again. What a relief.

  • On software update, iChat is coming non-stop

    Hello guys,
I've a MCB that until recently worked greatly! (still does, to be honest) but from time to time Software Update comes with the same update: iChat. Ive downloaded it several times and as soon as I check for new updates again, here it comes: iChat!
Whats is happening??? Will I need to re-install the whole system?
    Thanks!

    > Ive downloaded it several times and as soon as I check for new updates again
Are you actually installing it though ?

  • After running software update, iChat closes in error

    Hello!
I just ran software update and iChat is now 4.0.5. However, the buddy list doesn't show and it does not log me into AIM. So, I opened Preferences and if I click on any tab except for Accounts, the program keeps running. But, if I click on accounts, iChat closes and wants to send an error report to Apple. Any ideas?

Is Internet Sharing On in System Preferences > Sharing ?
Some people are reporting that this seems to have reset itself.

  • After latest Security Update - iChat won't connect to Buddies

I just finished a software update that included the newest security update for Quicktime.
Now iChat will not connect to my buddy list at all. Adium behaves similarly.
    Any suggestions?

Issue solved! I re-downloaded and installed the Jan. '07 encryption update for iChat.
Both iChat and Adium work now.

  • Since Safari update, ichat, itunes, safari and update don't work.

    I've got a weird one . . .
I ran the software update this morning for the new Safari, as well as iTunes. At the end of the download, I got an error message saying iTunes worked, but the Safari update was not successful. It then made me restart. After restart, software update refuses to open, as do Safari, mail, iChat, and iTunes. Third party programs run fine, as do iCal, iPhoto, etc. Firefox works fine. I downloaded the Safari update package off Apple's site via Firefox, but the package "unexpectedly quits." I'm thinking the failed update screwed everything up, but if I can't open a package installer OR the software update program, how the heck am I supposed to fix it?
    I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on a Powerbook G4.

    Not so weird, Travis.
It is happening to many of us. G5 tower 10.4.11
So the update killed iChat, Mail, itunes, safari, dictionary any apple installer, software update, as well as programs like cocktail, onyx and many others too numerous to name here.
My update didn't have an error message.
Here is what I have done:
Dumped all the prefs, tried to find corrupted fonts=none, cleaned font cache, repaired permissions (I always do this before I install any apple stuff), repaired disk, did that from the main drive and from a laptop with the G5 as a target disk. Made new users=nothing.
Started in safe mode and used terminal to fsk the HD.
NOw I will try to install safari from the laptop to see if safari is the rascal.
Disappointed in the whole thing, basically I am stuck with no mail, no apple Tv, and although there are work arounds, this is not what I need, Thanks Apple!

  • Safari - Itunes - Software Update - iChat : do not open anymore

    Hi
Everything went fine the last few months. Then suddenly these apps didn't pop up anymore when I clicked on the icons. I tried to run them through Application folder - no success.
I tried to open another Admin account - didn't help
I tried to reinstall Safari from DVD - didn't help
The day before this happened I synchronised my Powerbook with my MacPro through .Mac - could this be the reason?
    Please help
    Many thanks

    Hi Swissboy,
Do the applications appear to be running - i.e. do the menu items appear at the top and the small black triangle is present under the Dock icons?
If so, did you also synchronise some fonts while you were updating things? Sometimes a screwy font setting can do this. Check in FontBook to see if you have any duplicates and resolve them if necessary. Refer to the FontBook help on how to resolve duplicates if you're not sure how.

  • Update causes ichat to launch on startup

After installing the most recent update iChat launches when I restart my Mac Pro. I can not find where the preference is to keep it from launching. I checked the Startup folder. Any ideas?
    Mac Pro 3.0ghz 4gb ram 3.5tb 30" and 23" cinemas   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Scott,
That is an odd way to cure the problem.
Preferences (.plists) can be deleted on their own and application restarted to return those preferences to the defaults.
The Application can be reinstalled separately as well and then updated by the Combo install first then the iChat Update, both these can be found in the Downloads tab at the top of this page.
This does sound odd as you have Reinstalled the whole OS but it is repeating the problem.

  • IChat latest update 3.1.6 did not fix problem

A few days ago, I updated from OSX 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 and now no one can see video of me in a video chat, I can see them, and they see themselves. I then updated iChat today 3.1.6 and it has still not fixed the problem. Is anyone else having this problem?

    Steve,
Thanks for that. I'm not sure if I was clear. Apart from the minor glitch with iChat, which actually doesn't bother me at all, my machine is fine and 10.4.8 works as I expect it to. As for iChat, it works perfectly too.
The glitch with the update is just a curiousity to me. I realise that the update represents some additional security benefit, but whatever that is I can do without it if the alternative is a reinstall of the OS.
Your download, install, update procedure is exactly what I had to do for the combo updater. I've had more fun!
Anyway, as per my earlier post, I've just repeated that approach with the iChat update and two reinstalls. It has not worked.
    Regards,
    Mark

    Trouble Shooting Revisited
Ok We will start with loading Tiger and iChat version 3.0
    From Panther
There are or were serveral Add-ons and applications avaiblable to Panther users of iChat that are not compatible with iChat 3.
These following need to be deleted.
iCAR - An Add-on that posts an Auto response Away message (produces a 1 fps result in a Video chat)
Virex for Panther - An Anti Virus app avialable to @mac account users (Produces the 1 fsp problem)
iChatUSBCam for Panther/iChat2.x - A Add-on utility for using iSight or USB cam with iChat2.x (Incompatible with Tiger/iChat 3)
iProfile - An Add-on for producing a profile on the AIM server that ichat 2.x could not do (not proven to be a problem but now not needed).
A clean install of Tiger (not Archive and Install) produces the best results.
But any install should also check these Tiger settings.
First, UPGRADE to 10.4.3 as this gets past many Connection issues that became apparent with the basic Tiger (10.4) and iChat 3.0 It updates iChat to version 3.1
    Check Settings
Don't be complacent that you have not set anything different.
There are several new things in Tiger that may trip you up.
    These are worth looking at:
Mac Firewall. Now includes the ability to Block all UDP traffic in the Advanced button (System Preferences > Sharing >Firewall tab then the Advanced Button).
Also can now open UDP protocol for ports where as the Panther one only did TCP (Check any old Panther settings you Added to the presets).
    The ports should be:
    TCP -5190
    UDP -5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
There are more ports for Bonjour 5297, 5298, 5353 UDP and 5298 TCP and Jabber, 5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP)
    (Table View see 7th Sept)
QuickTime. This has a change in the name of the Connection Speed tab to Streaming (System Preferences > QuickTime) Check this is set to be equal to your connection speed (the download one if this is faster). See Apple Doc 301641 Dated 9th November 2005.
Date & Time. Not conclusively involved but worth eliminating. Set a Network Server and the correct Time Zone.
Apple Remote Desktop. If this is active in System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab it causes problems for iChat.
Next, test the actual speed you are getting from your ISP.
    http://www.dslreports.com/stest
There is a table here of the speeds you need:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301050
The one you get linked to in the Help menu is wrong.
    Other Known Problems
There are several other applications that iChat 3 does not seem to like.
folding@home This is a application that uses spare processor time to help find protein chains for a University.
PostgreSQL This is a data base application that can be reset to allow more processor time for iChat. See here http://www.murraywilliams.com/blog/archives/000046.html
Lotus Notes Some people have reported problems with this.
Make sure any Add-on Video cards or input PCI cards have up to date Firmware
IF you are still having problems I would do Routine Maintenance Tasks as laid out here.
Lastly, some routers/modems are SIP aware and give different results in iChat 3 compared to iChat 2.
This is due to the Operating System changing (like a new computer connecting to the modem) rather than iChat.
See My web pages: page4 at the SIP Text in a Box section.
Also for the above try some housekeeping particularly if you do not keep your Computer on 24/7 Gulliver, "kmosx3: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance"

  • Error -20, video chat keeps dying after 10.4.8 update

    Hello,
My video chats keep repeatedly freezing and dying with a error -20 after the 10.4.8 update (iChat version 3.1.7 v444). I am on a wifi network with an airport extreme (old version) basestation (connected to comcast cable). I have the quicktime and video bandwith settings correctly applied as advised on this forum, and did a permissions repair after the update. My friend that I am trying to chat with has also done the update, and this problem was not present before the update. Nothing has changed in my wifi setup since the update. I have posted a full error log below, and would be very grateful for any insight into this problem.
    Thanks!

    Hi Ralph,
Thanks for your response! Unfortunately I am enough of a newbie not to understand the implication of what you said Where should I look for these devices, and are they conflicting with iChat somehow? Do you mind telling me what action to take to fix this?
In the meantime I did a 10.4.9 update and airport stopped working completely. I talked to Apple support and they had me do a factory reset on my airport extreme basestation and reconfigure it in order to get to work again, and I have not tried video iChat since that happened.
    Thanks!

  • IChat AV 3 inviting AIM chat with PC

We can receive chat invitations from AIM on a PC and it works fine. However, when we try to initiate the video chat, we get a message that the other computer has "cancelled" our invitation.
I reviewed some postings by other people, and ran across the following:
"Can not initiate video conference with AIM: If you cannot initiate a video conference with an AIM user yet they can initiate one with you look at their buddy name. Does it have a space or an uppercase character? There's the problem. If you have iChat 3.1.0 the solution is to update iChat. (Click Software Update... in the Apple menu) Versions higher than 3.1.1 specifically allowed iChat to initiate a video conference with an AOL Messenger (AIM) for Windows user whose name include spaces or uppercase characters."
The above scenario describes our problem perfectly, except that when I checked which version of iChat we have, I saw that we are running version 3.1.5.
    Any suggestions out there?
    Thanks,
    dlm

    Hi dmark,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Essentially if they can call out but you can not call in they have not enabled the AIM application through the XP firewall
    http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page12.html#_Service
The Display name that a AIM Buddy can send you from the AIM server is not the same as their screen name. If they have emailed you with the display name then enter it with no spaces and no capital letters. You can alter it in the Get Info card of that Buddy.

  • IChat Just Quits After Open!!!!

IChat just quits right when I sign into my AIM account (its set to auto login)
everything was working fine earlier but after I installed the new security update iChat has been messed up - ARGH!

I had the same problem, and I think i have it somewhat figured out. This happened on both my brand new mac mini and my ibook. The problem is most likely either my router or my dsl modem (gateway?). The solution: If you have a wired computer, remove the ethernet cable, and open ichat. It will tell you that there is no internet connection, but it will stay open. Go into the iChat preferences, and change the settings to Allow Multiple Logins and to NOT connect automatically. Then plug in the cable and connect. That should work. If you have an airport card, turn airport off (on the top right of your screen), and do the exact same thing, turning the airport on at the end after changing the preferences. After that, to log in, unplug the cable/turn off the card, open ichat, plug it back in/turn the card back on, and log into ichat. That's what I found to work. I assume it's my router--linksys--or my dsl gateway--Westell--because ichat works fine in my brother's apartment, where another router is in use (I think it's netgear, but I'm not positive). Hope that helps.

  • IChat not scrolling properly

Every time I open iChat, my buddy list appears all offline until I scroll. Then when I do scroll, it fixes. But it will not allow me to scroll to the top.
Well, it does. It just appears to me that I have not -- i.e. if I double click somewhere, it is as though I've double clicked well above where I have (on another buddy).
I'm not sure when or why this happened.
I've tried un- and re-installing with the OS disc.
    Anyone have any advice?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
First of all did you use the 10.6.6 COMBO update afterwards to update iChat ?
Lets see if I try to explain what I think you said and see if we can agree on a description for the main issue.
    1) The Buddy list does not seem to have normal behaviour when Logging In.
It show most Buddies as Off Line.
    2) Scrolling the Buddy list does seem to "solve" 1) to some extent in that On Line Buddies are now shown.
    Question A)
Do you mean Visible ? Is iChat showing you the lower part of the List and you have to Scroll to see the On Line ones ?
    3) Somewhat linked to this is a possible Mouse-over Problem where the cursor pointer and Click do not seem to match the Response from the Buddy List.
    Questions B)
    (Yes it was plural)
Do you have the Buddy list reduced by using the View Menu > Show Buddy Pics in the Off setting (Unticked) ? (It makes no difference if the Audio or Video Icons are not shown - well not to the size/depth of each line)
Also, do you have Chax Installed and have you changed the Font and/or Size of the Buddies' Names or the Status Messages ?
(NOTE:- If you have the Buddy List wide enough in the above question the Status Message will appear on the same line as the Buddy's Name)
Have you used System Preferences > Universal Access (Mouse Tab) or any other app to Change the size of the Cursor/Pointer ?
With this last question, If I use Universal Access the response seems connected to the point of the Pointer no matter how large I display it.
Have you changed the Screen Resolution at all ?

  • Multiple instances of ichat running at once

    Very short version of events:
doing long distance tech help for elderly friend (which is agonizing beyond belief 'cause I can't screen share). On her machine ---
iChat starts up fine, in fact it will start up more than once, she can have multiple instances of iChat running simultaneously.  That's the first issue.
Once iChat is started up and you check the iChat menu, Preferences is greyed out. That's the second issue.
Also under the iChat menu, Accounts shows... no account. That's the third issue.
All three symptoms 'should' be impossible.
I have deleted the various iChat pref files
    Restarted the computer
    Both to no avail
Switching to the Guest account and starting iChat from there behaves normally, it does the 'welcome new user.... let's set up your account' type thing.

    Hi,
I must admit I did think Parental Controls (Even if tested in a new Account which would have effected even an Admin Account) would have been a large part of this.
----- Would have made sense, but not the case.
Is she starting this from an iChat Icon that is in the DOCK already ?
I have, through Skype screensharing, watched her start it up from iChat in the Applications folder. Each time she double clicks the app or does the File>Open thing another iteration of it appears in the Dock.
If so then Drag this Off the DOCK and let go (Puff of Smoke Animation)
Go to the Applications Folder and drag the app back to the DOCK.
--- Yep, been there, done that too.
This will Renew the link between the app and DOCK icon.
Can she also do a Get Info on the app and say which version it is ?
Either from the Finder's File menu or Highlight the app in the Applications folder then use the Apple/CMD ( or ⌘) + i keys together. (Example below)
If she has a Leopard or Snow Leopard computer then she can also use Quick Look.
(If she has OS 10.5.8 and iChat 4.0.8 it will show as iChat 4.0.9 here)
Can you also tell me which version of the OS she is Running ?
    --- 10.6.7
This is because iChat gets Updated with certain OS Updates
    and iChat is 5.0.3
For Instance, Snow Leopard at 10.6.1 updates iChat 5 to iChat 5.0.1 and at OS 10.6.3 iChat gets updated to version 5.0.3 (where it has remained).  As  Leopard goes from 10.5 to 10.5.8 there are many more updates to iChat. iChat gets to version 4.0.8/4.0.9 (As in the last pic) depending on a security Update after 10.5.8 was released).
If she does a Spotlight Search does she see more than one version of iChat ?
--- Nope. And I've done an 'enhanced' Spotlight search including 'everywhere' (ie System, Libraries and, jut for kicks, invisible folders), in the event that God forbid somehow or other she hid another copy somewhere else unintentionally. I can say with certainty that there is ONLY one copy of iChat on the machine.
Mine does as I have Cloned the Drive
At this point I am also wondering if her account on the Mac has been introduced from somewhere else (another Mac) as part of an Update/Upgrade process.
---- Nope. It was created 'from scratch' when she bought the machine and has been performing flawlessly for about 10 months.
If so is there a "Previous System" Folder on her Hard Drive at the top Level (Click the Hard Drive icon itself).
If there is an Applications folder in here (if it exists) it may contain a version of iChat that is linked to the DOCK icon and be the one that tries to launch first . The earlier thing of dragging the icon off the DOCK and dragging it back again will sort that.
If she is sure she has everything she wants from the "Previous System" then she can delete it.
--- Not relevant, never done a reinstall
I can sort of recreate this state.
If I launch iChat normally then use Terminal to start iChat a second in the DOCK is created.
This one if the Front app does not have access to the Preferences and the Accounts sub menu item is also Empty
    See My Force Quit window
---- Yep, that's what hers looks like.
However it seems to differ in that the Buddy Lists are not duplicated (That may be due to a Add-On Called Chax that I use and I get shown the All Contacts Buddy List) The all Contact list does not have my Buddy Pic and never fills in with any Buddies.
---- No 'add ons' of any kind on her machine. 'Factory stock' (make for easier trouble shooting     )
If I revert to the regular iCon I have Preferences and it shows Accounts in the Sub menu item.
Do her icons vary in what they show ?
    --- Nope
Does she use the Icon in the DOCK to launch iChat or is it some other form of Link such as a AppleScript they may use Terminal to do it for her ?
---- She has in the past used the Dock icon. Still uses it, but with the weird result.
I am trying to get an understanding on this for several reasons.
    1) I would like to know what is creating it before suggesting a Reinstall of iChat
---- An interesting idea. So, being a pretty adept Mac guy, and not adverse to trying 'outside the box' solutions, here's what we did....
I have the same OS version and same iChat version on my machine.
Got her to compress the existing copy of iChat in her Applications folder
'Sent' her a copy of my iChat through my MobileMe iDisk
Guided her through dragging and dropping it into the Applications folder (remember I said 'outside the box'?)
Had her do File>Open on that copy of iChat....
Same results - No preferences, no accounts of any kind.
To me this says that it is not the application itself but something else. What exactly that something else is, remains a mystery. Further corroborating that the app itself is 'good' is that as you may recall she WAS able to get it to start up in her Guest account and it behaved normally, asking for her account info etc.
    2) I am curious
    3) I would prefer to use less "destructive" methods before resorting to Reinstalling the app.
--- She's emailed back after having spoken to Apple support.  Machine is still under warranty so she is taking it to an Apple Store on Monday. From the way she describes the support phone call it sounds like she might have gotten elevated a couple of levels during the call.
I sense a 'system reinstall' in the very near future.
