The option to update without the computer (Over the air) was made available with iOS 5. If your iDevice is using a version of iOS lower than 5, you will need to use iTunes on your syncing computer to perform the upgrade. Use the Apple link below as a guide for the upgrade.

  • Unable to do update ios software on ipad 2 even with enough storage

unable to do a software update on ipad 2 .. there is enough storage total 15gb with 12.6 available... what's up ?

You might be confusing storage on your iPad with storage for your iCloud backup. You cannot purchase more storage for your iPad. That storage cannot be increased. You can purchase additional storage in iCloud for backups but that has no impact on how much storage is in your iPad.
You have two options. One is to delete enough content from your iPad to open enough storage for the update. Copy it to your computer. Apps can be downloaded again later.
The second option is to try and update while connecting the iPad to your computer running iTunes 11.1 or later. The update file will be downloaded to your computer and the update will not require as much free space on your iPad.

  • HT201263 None of the above have worked. Ipad completely bricked. This began when merely updating IOS software as instructed. Now Apple want to charge me for using their crappy software as directed. Surely this is not only immoral but potentially illegal.

    Read: iPad Troubleshooting Assistant
That procedure eventually leads you to the need to restore it.
Make sure you are following the instructions in this procedure to the letter. Here they are, with emphasis on some easily overlooked requirements:
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release only the Sleep/Wake button.
Continue pressing and holding the Home button while you reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.Note: If you see the "low battery" screen, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then start with step 2 again.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears (iTunes icon and USB connector) release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the "recovery mode" alert ("iTunes has detected a phone in recovery mode").
Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you do not see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. Be patient since it sometimes takes several of these attempts before you are successful.
If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Select the iPad in iTunes and choose "restore from backup". This assumes you have a backup. If you do not, you will have to download all your purchased iTunes content again. You do not have to pay for anything you already purchased.
If you still can't get it to work, you have done all you can and only Apple will be able to help.

Updated iOS on my iPad 2 and lost FaceTime.  No icon, nothing in a search, nothing in settings.  What should I do to get it back?

First I would try a soft reset by holding the Home Button and the Wake/Sleep button until the apple logo appears.
That often works when things go crazy.

Assuming you backed up your iPad just before updating, you could always restore to the previous state it was in.

  • HT1766 Updating iOS Software on an older iPad

Can I update an older iPad with iOS 5 in order to utilize iCloud and the 'Find my iPad' app?
I tried going under Settings>General, but do not see the 'Software Update' option.

That only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

I want to update iOS 5 on my iPad2 and I've read the article about it. There was written go in settings>general>software update in my ipad2 there isn't such button "Software Update" there is only "about" and "usage" so, what can I do?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • HT4623 I cannot see sw update button in general section, pls help how to update iOS in my iPad 2

Hi I want to upgrade my iOS to 5 in my ipad2 but I cannot see nay upgrade button in the setting section.pls help how to upgrade my iOS now

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, as you have iOS 4 you can only update to iOS 7 (that is the only version that you can update to) via your computer's iTunes, as described half-way down the page that you posted from. You will need the current version of iTunes on your computer : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad via File > Devices > Back Up
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

If you do update you can't then uninstall it

  • Update of software for iPad was interrupted and the iPad is now locked up.  Any ideas for how to re-start the update process?

    Hi all,
I was updating the software on my iPad2 and while trying to multitask stopped the update process.  My iPad is now locked up and unresponsive.  Does anyone have ideas about how to re-load the update?

You will need to hold down the power + sleep button, wait for restart, then hold home.  iTunes should then be in DFU mode.  Once in DFU mode connect to iTunes and click "Restore".  PRESTO!
