Update iPad without iTunes connections

I started an update to iOS8.1 (i think) on my iPad while away from home. It won't complete without plugging in to iTunes. I can't do that until I return home next week. How can I proceed and get my iPad working again?

You can't. There isn't anything that you can do now. If your iPad went into recovery mode with the iTunes logo and the USB dock connector cable on the screen, you have to restore the device before it will function again.

Yeah, I've seen this topic:
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/27446/i-do-not-have-enough-free-space-o n-the-c-drive-of-my-windows-computer-to-run-t
But which one is 100% working solution?
Thanks.

Relocate iOS device backups
Assuming you're running Windows Vista or later you can use the following steps:
Open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command (on one line) and press <Enter>
Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command (on one line) and press <Enter>
MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your target drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.
In some cases (perhaps depending on what builds of iTunes were installed in the past) it seems the folder is in the \Local\ branch of AppData rather than \Roaming\ in which case edit to suit.
If you're still running Windows XP you can use Junction (cmd line tool) or NTFSLink (shell ext). In both cases you move the existing folder to a new location, create an empty folder where the old one used to be, then use the tools to get the operating system to link the two together and silently redirect any file operation on the old location through to the new one.
Note that while this method works for iOS device backups it cannot be used to redirect sections of the media library.
If your iTunes library is on the C:\ drive with the media folder held elsewhere then see also make a split library portable.

• Download iOS 4.2 for iPad without iTunes

Have been struggling with Network Connection Timeout and couldn't download IOS 4.2 before I found this fix.
I have now (finally) successfully downloaded IOS 4.2 for iPad.
You can download the iOS 4.2 update directly from appldnld.apple.com/iPad/ in your favorite download manager without iTunes.
I'm using Firefox (Win-7) and the download manager add-on.
As the download is stopped numerous times without reason
(I suspect server overload), you'll have to reclick on the download manager box numerous times to complete the download.
Once the iPad1,14.2.1_8C148Restore.ipsw file is downloaded, connect the iPad to the computer, launch iTunes and press Shift + Update button to upgrade your iPad iOS.
Go to the folder where you saved the download and open it.
Voila.

A quick question to others here, when i first got my iPad iTunes was saying that my iPad was up to date and it gave a date when it would next automatically check as three days in the future - November 21st. Now it is saying the 28th. Is it normal for it to go to a week like that or is that another item to feed the rumor mill?
By default, after any check for updates the next check is scheduled for 1 week later. You can verify this by clicking the "check for updates" button. The next time you come back to the page for that device, you'll see that the next check date is a week out.

• Apple Support Says You Can't Activate an iPad without iTunes?

So got a new iPad, activated it over wifi, and have been having problems ever since setting up my log in accounts for various services.
So I called Apple support to learn how to unify my various Apple IDs so that I can just use one going forward. They offered to help, but when their recommendations failed to solve my problem, they suggested I plug the iPad into iTunes, which I cannot do. They told me that it was impossible to activate an iPad without plugging it into iTunes, and insisted I must have done this. When I assured the Apple support member that I did not, they simply told me to take it to a Genius bar, that they couldn't help me any more. Well, the nearest genius bar is 2 hours away.
So my first question is, just who is Apple hiring for technical support these days, and are they not training them any more?
My second question is, is there anyway to leap-frog past this front line poorly trained employees and get to someone who can actually help instead of going to an Apple store?
The problem is this - my iTunes account ID is tied to an old e-mail I no longer have. So I called to change my Apple ID for all services. It now works for iTunes, and iCoud, but not Newstand, or Messenger. Apple says they don't know how to solve the problem without connecting to iTunes, yet this doesn't seem like a local iPad problem, rather an account server problem.
So not really sure where to turn after getting such ridiculously out of touch information from Apple support.

Prior to iOS 5 that was the case, one must have iTunes to activate an iPad or iPhone. iOS5 changed all of that. Either the tech was not aware of the change or was reading from an old script. Either way it is a training problem.

I'm assuming you used an old email address for your Apple ID. If that is the case, and you still have the password for your Apple ID, you can log into Apple's Apple ID support and change the email associated with the ID. Note, you will still always have to use the old email as your login name, but all email will go to the new address. You can also create an entirely new Apple ID using your new email and use that if you wish.

• Update iPad without syncing?

Hi,
I am in America for vacation and I want to update my iPad without loosing my music and some big PDFs that can't be transferred in my new laptop. When I click update I will loose these files? I transferred my apps, photos, movies, and some books and PDFs. How can I update the iPad without syncing? Can I update it and then click restore from backup to get my music and my PDFs??? Plz help... I am not good with iTunes and syncing and very often I delete my data on iOS device...

Ok! I'll be waiting... Thank you very much for the reply, i though a restore from backup includes music etc... And i was ready to click update... Thanxxxx! When i return back to Greece maybe iOS 5 will be available, so i will go right from 4.3.3 to 5.0... I need patience! Thanx again.

• If i rent a movie through itunes, but do not transfer to ipad how can i download it to ipad without itunes and not be charged again?

I rented a movie via itunes and downloaded it to itunes at the time of rental. i was unable to transfer it to my ipad while connected to itunes due to a size constraint...i now have room on my ipad but am not near my itunes computer (2500 miles away), is it possible to download the movie directly from the iTunes Store to my ipad without having to rent it again and be charged a second time?
please advise.
thanks

No, rentals are only allowed to be on 1 device at a time, so you would need to move it from the computer to the ipad. This applies to rentals from the computer, if rented on a device (ipad) it is only viewable on that ipad and cannot be transferred elsewhere.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

• Reset disabled iPad without iTunes

Well, I'm in trouble now.
I have an iPad that says "iPad Disabled Connect to iTunes" and it won't connect to anything but the computer it was set up with.
My problem now is that computer has since been reformatted and reinstalled a few times, so the iPad won't recognize it!
So I need to reset it without iTunes, or with iTunes on a "different" computer.

• After iOS 8 update, iPad lost 3G connection

Hi
After iOS 8.0 update my iPad (iPad2 Wi-Fi + 3G 32GBModel A1396 MC983KS/A) looses 3G connection.
When I restart iPad it has good 3G connection. After few hours, when I have closed my cover and check IPad again 3G/2G connection has lost.
Connection won't come back. Only when I restart IPad I get connection back.
Is this a bug in the update?
When it will be corrected?

Similar problem too with iPad 2. After updating it just continues to search and won't connect to 3G (verizon). I spent 5 hours at the local apple store and they couldn't solve the problem. There was another person there too with the exact same problem with an iPad 2 and they couldn't fix it either.
After all of this time they had no solution except to buy a new iPad ....... unbelievable. The issue is not a coincidence and it is obviously due to the software update. Apple's arrogance to openly address and fix the issue is astounding. Very poor customer service for a company that is supposed to be so progressive.

• How to unlock iPad without itunes

How do you unlock the IPad without having a computer for iTunes. My niece somehow changed her code, & forgot what it is. Can she use my iTunes to recover?

Yes, she can use your iTunes. However, she will lose anything that she
has not backed up to iCloud or her computer (if there is one). In many
countries, media and apps can be redownloaded if purchased via iTunes.
Photos/movies taken with the iPad that were not synced to a computer or
iCloud will be gone (iCloud limit is 30 days and 1000 photos - if I remember correctly).
If her iPad is in recovery due to forgotten password, there is nothing else to
do besides restore.

• Setting up iPad without iTunes account

I want to buy an ipad2 for my father who's lives outside the US. I would like to set up his email accounts and anything else I can do myself for hip before I ship it over.
Questions:
I have an ITunes account but he does not. I believe I need to connect to iTunes to setup the iPad however I'm concerned that his iPad will be connected to my iTunes account. I intend to get him some help in setting up his own iTunes account later (when he receives this) so he can sync etc on his own. Is there any way for me to set up the machine for him here and then let him run with it going forward?

I think you can make him an iTunes account on your computer, use it to set up the iPad, then help him get itunes and that account on his own computer so he can sync.
I'm not sure about the paying and credit card part of it. When I se up my itunes account i could use an iTunes gift card and not a credit card. I wonder if you can do the same? Or, if it insists upon a credit card, use yours long enough to set it up, get a $10 iTunes card and take your CC off and put that gift card on in its place. ( I've never had to do that so I'm not quite sure about how it'd work)
The other bug in this, either you make him a new e-mail (like a yahoo or gmail or something) account so he doesn't get e-mails about a gift he doesn't know he's getting, or you spill the beans early. You can always make him a disposable account for the setup and then make changing that info be part of the whole 'in person' set up.

• Is it possible to charge an ipad without being connected to either wifi or a network (Verizon, AT

I don't like to leave my wifi on 24 hours a day. However, my wife thinks her iPAD will only charge if she is actually connected to the internet through wifi or a network like Verizon, etc. Is that correct or is there a way to charge the iPAD without activating either wifi or a network?

Being connected to WiFi or a cell network has nothing to do with charging. The iPad will charge when connected to the charger or an appropriate USB port regardless of whether the iPad is connected to a network of any type, or even has ever had such a network connection set up.
