Update iPhoto '09 before installing Maverick?

I have iPhoto '09 and have seen enough discussions that tell me I need to be careful before proceeding with a Maverick update.
I actually asked in the Apple Store but the person didn't seem to sure.
Do I install Maverick and let it update iPhoto?
Or do I need to bring iPhoto current first and then install Maverick.
Are there any special precautions (other than backing up my files) that I need to take or anything to be aware of?
Thanks...
Chrystal

Make a full backup of your computer before upgrading to Mavericks, not only backup your documents and data. A bootable clone of your system on an external drive, or a full Time Machine Backup. This way, you you can revert to the previous state, if something should go wrong.

Neither.
Your current version will not run without problems on Mavericks, and the new iPhoto 9.5.1 will not run on your current version.
So, while still running iPhoto '09, repair your iPhoto library. This will make it safer to upgrade the library to to iPhoto 9.5.1 format.
Then install upgrade to Mavericks, and now you can buy iPhoto '11 from the AppStore. Then double-click your library to open it in iPhoto '11.
To repair your iPhoto library launch iPhoto with the key combination option-command held down and use the library first aid panel to repair the database.

    Dear  MAC-Friends.

I am extremely afraid to do something wrong - what will be a failure so I loose all the photos I had in my iphoto library before installing the Mountain Lion.
I have just installed the MOUNTAIN-LION and now I can´t use my Iphoto-programme without answering the following question:
Choose another Library ?  ( But I only want the choose the photos which one was in the old iPhoto-Library and not the other photos on the MAC-computer ? ).
    and the other possibility is:
    Create a new Libray ! Which iPhoto-library  ?
And why create a new and to risq to loose the old photos.
    PLEASE HELP ME.
    Kind regards  FINN GRABOWSKI

Ok. Let me first ask you, do you have any backups of your files - for example, do you use Time Machine or any other backup system?
Next, quit iPhoto. In the Finder, go to your Pictures folder. Is there a file there called iPhoto.Library? How large is it? (If it doesn't show the size, click once on it, click cmd-I to see the information). If it's a healthy size (ie, several GB), then that should be your library, and you can double-click it to launch iPhoto. (The application will remember where your library is next time, you can just launch iPhoto normally).
If that's not the right file, check your Trash. Is there anything in there?

How can I update iPhoto and iVideo from Mavericks?

Was iVideo purchased on the app store?  If so, both iPhoto and iVideo can be updated via the App Store.  (You can click on Software Update under the Apple menu at the top left of your display).

Scanning in both HP Officejet 7210 and Samsung printer - the document scans but no file is generated - any ideas how to fix this?  (It worked fine before installing Mavericks)

PS: forgot to mention: if your printer is on your wifi network, you'll have to enter your wifi password on the printer to connect it to the network before Printers & Scanners will see it.
Sometimes a reset of the wifi system is needed too. A full set of directions would be:
    Try:
uninstall all printer manufacturer apps and "utilities"
go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
control-click on your printer in the column on the left
select "Reset Printing System..." and "reset" in the dialog that follows
do a factory reset on your printer. You'll have to consult the printer manual for how.
power down everything: modem, router, computer, and printer
power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, computer, and printer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next
enter your wifi password in your printer so it can connect to the network
go back to printers & scanners and it should see your printer and download a driver for it from Apple
resist the temptation to install any printer manufacturer apps in the future.

  • I cant update iphoto since uploading to Maverick

Maverick wont let me open iphoto & i cant update iphoto with my old or current apple id

You must log in using the Apple ID that was used to set up the compter (or purchase the application if it was purchased later)
Assuming that you have some version of iPhoto '11 it should be available under the purchases tab
You can try trashing the iPhoto Application (do not empty the trash until everything is working ok) and then installing from the App store
If that is not working then you must contact App store suport - link is on the right of the App store window

  • Why won't iPhoto work after installing Mavericks?

I installed Mavericks on my 2009 27 " iMac and now my iPhoto won't work. It says, "You can't use this version of iPhoto with this version of iOSX: You are using iPhoto 9.3."
I can now not access any of my photos.
I am not sure if I am using Mountain Lion or Lion. I think I updated to Mountain Lion but am not sure.

Tried installing the iPHoto9.4.3 Update. It gives me an alert that says "this version of Iphoto on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the App Store to see if an update is available."
PS Sorry if you thought i was giving you attitude. I am supposed to be working on a project due in two days and I need iPhoto to do it. So I am in panic mode.

  • Update failed to download / install, Mavericks

    I'm experiencing the following problem.
Every large update I try to download results in to a corrupt download. (WIFI and Cable)
The problems started before my upgrade to Mavericks last Friday. I had tried to install mavericks since Tuesday, but after every download I got the message that it was corrupt and couldn't install it. I then used my wife's MB pro to download the file and through Airdrop I was able to get the file on my MB pro. Mavericks installed without a lot of trouble.
Now I want to run the software update, and regardless of what I'm trying the software seems to fail during install.
I've also ran the disk utility a couple of times and after fixing it's fine. But after blocks are bad again like the next day.
    I hope someone can help.

This is starting to sound like a monolog.
I think I found the problem.
    So looking for
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x00003ff24bcc5240
Should me that it could be RAM related. I downloaded and installed http://www.optilabs.eu/en/blog/detail/mac-memory-test-how-to-test-your-mac-os-x- ram and I booted my mac in single user mode (cmd + S)
    Then I typed "memtest all"
Immediately it showed errors with RAM.
Since I have 2 x 4G RAM I removed the top one and ran the test again. It was fine!
From another mac I put in RAM into the second shelf and ran the test again. It failed!
I took both RAM mods out and put the previous second on in. It was fine!
--- So the RAM modules are both fine
I took the old GOOD RAM and put it in the second and, it failed.
Then I made sure it was really wedget in and it was fine.
Conclusion, my second memory bank doesn't make a proper connection with the second RAM module.
So now I could buy an 8 Gig single RAM unit,... (if my model supports that).

  • I can't update iPhoto after upgrading to Mavericks

I have searched everywhere for my iLife '11 disc and can't find it.  App Store says I must update iPhoto, iMovie etc, but won't accept my Apple id.  Can't talk to apple support without first agreeing to pay $60!!. Can someone tell me what to do next??

App Store says I must update iPhoto, iMovie etc, but won't accept my Apple id.
If your versions of iPhoto, etc have been installed using a different AppleID, then you have to ask the person who installed it to authorize the update.
Or uninstall the current versions and buy the updatetd versions.
If you are sure, that the versions have been accepted to your current AppleID, there may be aproblem with your AppleID. Sometimes an AppleID will be disabled for use with the AppStore for security reasons. Do you get an error message, that indicates a problem with your AppleID?

  • Do I absolutely need to back up my computer before installing mavericks?

    Hi,
I want to install Mavericks, but currently do not have a proper backup system in place. Is it absolutely necessary to back up my rMBP before installing?
I understand there is a risk in not backing up, but have there been many users experiencing loss of data after installation?

    I'll be more blunt.
Not only is not related to Mavericks, not is it related installing software.
If you have anything of value on your computer, it is essential to have a regular backup system in place.
All storage devices ultimately fail if used for a long enough time. It can happen at anytime. It can also happen to a backup drive.
Many drives will be "junked" before they fail, but some will die early.
Your backup plan must account for that.

It is nice and convenient how Mac OS X Mail displays messages semi-automatically when you just select them. But wouldn't a bigger view of the mailbox be useful sometimes?
Yes, and it's easier to get than you maybe think.
Hide the Preview Pane and Delete Mail Without Opening It in Mac OS X Mail
To hide the message preview pane in Mac OS X Mail:
Double-click the bar that separates the message pane from the mailbox pane.
    Now, to delete any email:
Highlight the message or messages you want to delete.Hold down the Command key while selecting with the mouse to highlight multiple emails and Shift to highlight a range.
    Press Del.
To get the preview pane back, double-click the same bar again.
Cannot do this now since installing Maverick

  • To do before installing mavericks

Just wondering if other than backing up system if there are other to do tips to help facilitate a better install experience of Mavericks

    Steve,
don't only back up, but check, if your backup is working. And if you are using TimeMachine for backup, be sure to include the full system with all applications, libraries. Don't exclude anything that you might need to be able to revert to the older system.
Check the compatibility of all third-party software you are using.
Update all applications, drivers, plug-ins to the latest versions, before upgrading the OS.
Repair all your photo libraries (iPhoto, Aperture) while still running the older versions. Aperture and iPhoto will need to convert the libraries to a new format, and that will be a smoother process, if the libraries are in good repair.  Keep backups of the photo libraries, GarageBand projects, etc, of the older versions.
After upgrading Mavericks you will see plenty of application upgrades. Some applications will install the new versions in addition to the older versions. Don't delete the older versions, until you are perfectly happy with the new Mavericks versions of the applications (iWork, GarageBand). The supported  features are very different.
    Good luck for the migration.

  • Final Cut Studio 2: needing to update older version before install

I am trying to install FCS 2 upgrade from FCS, but it tells me I have an older version and that it "needs to be updated" before I can continue. The manual says that "To avoid compatibility issues, the Final Cut Studio installer requires you to update all Final Cut Studio applications to the version included with Final Cut Studio 2." I am not sure what this means, since I am just now installing FCS 2. I've read the messages here about upgrading from FCP 5.0.4, my FCP version, to 5.1 via a crossgrade on disks from Apple. Does this mean that I need to buy this crossgrade before I can finish the upgrade to FCS 2? This requirement is not listed on the FCS 2 box, but I can't seem to find anything else that would "update" my older version. And is this true for each of the other applications in the suite?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, you don't need to buy the crossgrade. I just updated the PPC version of FCS to FCS2 yesterday. (I had transferred these applications over to my new Intel Mac from a G5 even though I knew they wouldn't run on the Intel Mac until I could update with the Universal version). What I did end up having to do was to manually delete everything from the PPC installation (applications, preferences, application support files, etc.). Then install from the FCP2 disks, having your old FCP registration number ready to enter in the dialogue box that comes up when you try to upgrade. While the installer says you are upgrading, in fact it installs the new universal versions of the applications.
