Update lock up

recent update locked up my computer while trying to install. upon restart all I get is the apple icon and a spinning wheel. what do i do?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Tiger Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If it appears to be time for An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, APPs, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

DBMS_LOCK vs Select for update locking

Hi,
In one of our database packages, we are using the dbms_lock (that package is used to generate unique numbers) instead of select for update locking.
I want to ask what is more suitable here. Our application is oracle forms and oracle db on oracle app server.
Are there any limitations to select for update locking?
What are the conditions favourable to use DBMS_LOCK?

DBMS_LOCK is extremely efficient. Try it. Put a call to obtain/free a lock in a loop and see how long it takes to loop a few thousand times (don't SLEEP in the loop, just obtain and free the lock). If you are having performance issues with DBMS_LOCK or your select it is probably because whatever it is that gets the lock (whichever way you get it) is taking a certain amount of time to finish.
I too, am curious as to what "issues" you had. In either case, a lock for consistent read will be different than a lock for update (as it should be) in terms of how it impacts other users.

Configure Update Lock

I have a requirement that in few series User shouldn't be able to enter Negative number.I am trying to use the "Configure Update Lock" to achieve the same.The details entered in Configure Update Lock screen are
Name: Lock Series A
Expression: Series Name < 0
Message: Number should not be negative
Save it and restart application server.
I found that it is not working as intended ..means even if i enter a number greater or less than 0 then also i am getting the message and data is not getting saved.
Is the expression correct or do i need to change it ?
2) If the series is already having Negative number and then i want to make use of "Configure Update Lock" to mention something like that from a particular date onwards system should not allow to enter Negative number then what should be the expresssion ? I tried to use If condtion but getting message like "Value should be True/Flase'
Any response is highly appreciated.

HT4528 UPDATE LOCKED MY PHONE

update locked phone,

I'm having the same issue. My phone is locked in Recovery Mode. iTunes recognizes it as an iPhone in recovery mode and I choose "Restore" but what seems to be most of the way through the restore I get "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6)." After I first had problems I updated iTunes, but that didn't help. I'm on hold with phone support. I've yet to talk to anyone.

Yes,First inform the user.
One more thing NEVER delete locks from SM12 without making sure that the lock owner is logged out of the system and no processes are running in the owners name.Otherwise inconsistencies in your system might appear.
Report it to the user if the user says ok to goahead , then do Kill users from SM04 ... and check whether any background job is not running in that system.

SQL Updates, locks and multithreading

I am trying to do the following:
Updating 5M rows in multiple database writer thread using OCI. I have not set any Oracle parallel execution related parameters yet.
However, it is found that there is no performance improvement in doing this in multiple threads.
My questions:
1. Does Oracle lock the table during each update? I think it does and that is why there is no performance enhancement.
- If yes, is there any way to tell Oracle not to lock the table during updates. As it is, my threads will never update the same row in parallel.
2. Is the way out is to do the following?
- Partition the table
- Do an "ALTER SESSION ENABLE PARALLEL DML"
- Fire updates
3. Is there any OCI way of doing this?

- If yes, is there any way to tell Oracle not to lock the table during updates. As it is, my threads will never update the same row in parallel.Unless you're explicitly locking the table, Oracle won't lock it. Oracle doesn't ever escalate row locks to table locks.
My guess is that something in your system is bottlenecked. Perhaps your disk, CPU, or RAM is maxed out. Perhaps your system is busy waiting to switch redo logs. There are lots of potential bottlenecks here, you'd have to do some investigation to figure out what's taking so long.
One quick thing you might try is to use the /*+ append */ hint (i.e. insert /*+ append */ into table (your query here)). This tells the database to do a parallel direct path load, avoiding most redo log generation. This improves the speed, but isn't particularly friendly for database recovery. Make sure you read the documentation on this hint before you use it.
You may also be able to change your SQL to use the bulk collection syntax.

- Fire updatesI'm assuming that you have the partitioning options in your database. If so, this is likely to be faster, though I'm not sure by how much. Have you benchmarked a test to see? Of course, if you account for the time to partition the table, you're likely to remove all of your performance gain.
Also, unless you are able to spread your inserts across the various partitions, you're unlikely to see any performance benefit.
This strikes me as a pretty drastic approach.
3. Is there any OCI way of doing this?Well, you could execute the SQL above against the table from OCI. I'd recommend doing this sort of thing from SQL*Plus or something of that genre, though, simply because folks may get upset at you if your application partitions their tables for them.

Ipod Touch 5.1.1 update lock and volume buttons wont work.

So I just updated my ipod touch 4G to the ios 5.1.1 version and ever since my volume and lock buttons aren't working/responding. The funny thing is, a lot of people are posting the same question but they get the same answer from the same person that says to hold the lock and home button when everybody specifally states that the lock and volume buttons aren't working so those answers are useless. I tried resetting all the settings to factory from the settings menu but still the same problem. What should I do? Is it a bug for every new updater?

FM Radio Lollipop Update Locked Screen Issue

Hi All,
After updating my Z1 Compact to Lollipop I face the following problem. When I listen to FM Radio with Sony's supplied single-button earphones with the screen locked if I press the button once it turns off the radio app and then if I press it again it starts the Walkman instead of resuming playing radio. This was not the case on the android kitkat. It's very important to me as I use FM Radio very often. Any help much appreciated. Thanks

IOS 5 update locked my iphone with fido sim card...

After updating to iOS 5 this morning
I inserted a SIM card from another carrier...but it was not recognized!
I have used this SIM card from the past few months and it seems like my handset is now locked...
it only recognizes SIM card that i used in Vancouver......
Im currently in Taiwan right now...and i bought my iphone from Vancouver's apple store this april..not going back till Dec

Latest update locked my mac

This is going to sound unbelievable, however, after applying the latest update to my mac it acted as if it had been remotely locked from icloud, I even got the email to say I had locked it 8 hours before it actually locked itself. I don't really want to phone apple and be charged a bomb for an issue that I did not cause. Any ideas?

RAW Support 3 Update LOCKED ALL My External Drives!

OK, Can't get Aperture 2.1.4 to open or create any Libraries since the RAW 3 Support and iLife 09 update yesterday (came in through Software Update).
Running a PowerMac G5 tower, OSX 10.5.8
The Update worked fine with iPhoto 8.1.1 and I can now open RAW files from my new Canon S90.
I have 8 external FW drives which are now all "Read Only" and the lock is Grayed Out.

Thanks for the response. I decided to try the Bob Timmons approach of shutting everything down for a half hour and then restarting the external drives and then 5 minutes later start the Mac.
This worked!
All of my FW drives now say "Read & Write" and all is back to normal.
However Aperture 2.1.4 still will not recognize CR2 (RAW files) OR JPEGs from the new Canon S90.
iPhoto8.1.1. sees both now.

No sound since 10.4.9 update- locked in optic digital output?

My computer seems to be locked in digital out. The built-in speakers don't even appear as an option, and there's the red glow coming out of the headphone jack. Am i doing something wrong? This happened just after the 10.4.9 update.

This is a known issue, and people have been dealing with this since the first MBPs came out last January, its not a 10.4.9 issue. Try plugging and unplugging something in the audio jack a few times to see if it will turn off.

11g child table update locking

Hi,
I'm posting this question after searching on multiple places and trying to understand 11g locking mechanism.
I've a table TXN1 transaction and has FKs to 3 different tables Account, customer, country and currency. ALL FKs are indexed (bitmap). I am updating TXN1 of amount column about 10,000 rows. (SID 1) As expected, it has taken lock type 3 SX on TXN1. But it has taken on lock type 4 (share) on Account, customer and country. Committing every 10k rows.
At the same time sid 2 is inserting into another TXN2 table which has FK to the same dimensions account, customer and currency. Only FK on ac_id is bitmap indexed. The inserts have taken SX lock(type 3) on tXN2 table (expected). But it is trying to take SX type 3 lock on account, customer, currency tables. typ3 lock taken on CCY but waiting on CST. But It is blocked by sid 1. It has resulted into Enque-TM contention and resulted into anywhere 60-300 secs wait time..
I understand update/delete in parent table results into locking of SX of child tables and need the FKs to be indexed to avoid etc. I didn't understand the following and appreciate if someone can help me.
1. Why is SID1 taking shared lock on the parent tables Account,customer,country and currency tables? The update statement is not updating any of those FK columns nor referring them in where clause(if it matters!). Is it to ensure that the parent rows are not deleted?
2. Why is SID2 taking SX lock on the dimension tables? Why is it not taking RS lock type 2 on parent rows? Why is SID1 taking shared lock type 4, but not 2?

CS3 update locked up all apps!

Started my computer this morning, got a message for an update to CS3. I had to close Firefox to run the update, which seems to have run thru - got no error messages. But, now none of my programs will run, not Adobe, not Firefox, not Mail, nothing! On restart (one of about 6 or 7 already this morning) I may be able to start Mail, but then no other programs. Or I can start Firefox and Mail, but then Mail is the only operating program, all others are locked up. Including Finder!!! I can't trash anything, can't run Disk Utility (altho once i was able to run that and repair permissions - about the 2nd restart that was).
It is totally locked up now - no FInder, no programs. How can I get back to where I was yesterday - do I have to reinstall the OS and all programs?
I'm on a G5 iMac powermac system, running 10.5.4.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've forgotten the exact chain of events with the Installer disk (it's been quite awhile since I've worked with it), but once you are booted up on the DVD and you've gotten to an installer window onscreen I think you can just choose not to hit "continue" (or whatever the button is to start the install) and instead just move your cursor up to the main menu bar at the top of your screen, pull down one of those menus and find Disk Utility (or at least a choice for "Utility" up there). Just choose the appropriate menu choice and you should be able to begin fixing the hard disk.
Hopefully someone else will stop by who has more accurate instructions for you to follow...sorry I can't be of more help here.

Itunes update locks phone to usb/itunes logo screen

So for the past year whenever apple has an update it messes with my phone. This as I said first happened about a year ago. I updated my phone and in the middle of doing so itunes errored out and I was unable to continue with the update. My phone was not locked on the usb/itunes logo. itunes did not see the phone when I plugged it in and nothing worked. I called apple support and was on the phone with them off and on for most of the day. We uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it, she had me deleting files from my computer that may cause a problem etc...finally when they couldn't figure out what was wrong I was told it was a hardware issue that was brought to the forfront of the OS since the update. (Not a happy camper at this point). Thankfully it was one day before my warranty was up and apple replaced the phone. The problem however now was I needed to backup my phone and update it again. When I did this I was still having the same issue as the old phone. It was locked on the usb/itunes screen. In complete frustration after having spent a good day trying to get my phone working while dealing with my apple withdrawl I plugged it into my home desktop computer. All of the sudden iTunes on that computer recognized that there is a computer that needs to be restored. I follow the prompts restore the phone to factory settings, connect it to my laptop when it is done and restore the phone with my personal backup. I still see people being told it is a hardware issue....fast forward one year and a couple updates later and this long process being repeated every time. The new OS is now coming out becuase of the new phone being released. I decide while at work to update my phone being impatient and not thinking I update it to only have the exact same thing happen again. Now I am without a phone all day as I am at work and only have my laptop with me. I have been frantically searching the internet for a solution when I see a suggestion that you move the usb cord to another port on your computer. (I have a couple but tend to just use the same one) I move the cord to a different usb port on the computer and what do you know but iTunes sees the phone, sees that it needs to be resotred and starts the process. So if you are having the same problem I am move the usb cord to another port and try it from there. I am not a professional but have a working knowlege of computers and wish with all my heart that apple would find out why it's doing this (I am one of many many people having this problem) instead of giving the same "it's a hardware issue". If that were true then I would not have been able to plug the same phone into the same computer with the same cords etc and have it work only when I moved to a different usb port. Clearly there is a glitch in the software of iTunes that is not seeing the phone in that particular port after the updates error out. Hope this helps others with this issue. For the record other than this updating issue that I have managed to work around and find a solution for I love my iPhone and all it can do. Maybe I can be an apple Genius now?

Which version of iTunes are you using? Which version of OS 10.4?
