Update = lost folders & pics??

I updated to iPhoto '08 today, but not all of my folders & pics from the old Library made the journey. If I search for "data" of "originals" in Finder I can get to them. They just aren't showing up as events. How do I get them into the main iPhoto Events display?

Ethan:
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto 6 library that you converted? If so post back. The following suggestions are predicated on the fact that you do not.
Try the following in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
2 - use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. Report back on how long it took and how many photos you have in the library so we can give other users an idea of how long it may take.
3 - lastly create a new library and import the Originals folder from the problem library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
If you do have a backup copy of the iPhoto 6 or previous library forget the above and post back. We can go from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to recover lost folders and files - Pls help, help...

Some days ago I lost all of my 15 GB folders and files that stored in my Macbook Pro hard drive called DATA.  I brought my Macbook pro to an experienced computer tecnicians who providing data recovery services. To his and my suprise, after checking, scanning it a few hours, he said their is no way to recover because he did not find any trails at all.  The computer still seems working properly - I have no problem with any applications.  There are few other folders in the DATA hard disk containing pictures, computer programs still remain.  These lost folders and files contain mainly documents (word, excel, power point, pdf etc) which I accumulated in my many years working  !!!!.  I did not make a back up since last September partly because I think Mac is very safe.
The computer with me all the time on that day and only my son used Power Point to make a simple presentation on that evening - he can not save it on the folders the he normally use - All the folders and files are gone.
I will appreciate it very much if any of you can tell me what would be the possible causes and more importanly how to recover the lost folders and files.  They are very very valuable to me.
Many thanks for your kind attention

First, did the data actually get deleted, or is it still there somewhere?  Try searching the drive for some of the documents, perhaps it's all just in another folder on that drive.
If it's truly gone, it's impossible for us to say what might have happened to make it unrecoverable.  Perhaps someone using the computer used Secure Empty Trash, or securely erased empty space on the hard drive.  Perhaps it was overwritten by other stuff before you noticed.  It's possible the hard drive is starting to fail, though this seems like an awfully specific problem for that to be the issue.
Or perhaps the tech you took the computer to didn't know what he was doing.  Why not try recovering what you can on your own?  See Recovering deleted files.
You should be aware that no computer is safe.  All computers rely on hardware that may fail and software that can have bugs.  You absolutely MUST maintain a good set of frequently-updated backups...  no fewer than two full backups of anything you don't want to lose.

  • Any way to keep files updates within folders?

Hey guys.. I am experimenting with iPhoto, and had a few quick questions.
I just imported a folder, containing the folder structure I use to organize a specific set of pics on my hard drive. They're reference/inspiration shots for my own photography. I was stoked to discover that each folder became an "event".
However my library is "managed", so while they weren't deleted from their location, the shots I am looking at inside of iPhoto are now contained inside the iPhoto Library file. Is that correct?
As I'm always adding files to those folders, and occasionally moving them around manually, my main question I have is concerning whether there's any way to keep those "events" up to date with what files are in the actual folders?
I'm not opposed to having a 2nd REFERENCED library File for this sole purpose.
    In a Managed Library:
Is there any way to add a file to a folder manually using the finder, and have iPhoto recognize that it contains a new file and update itself when I view that "event"? Or can I update it manually at least? Like a "refresh".
    In a Referenced Library:
    - Can I keep the "event" up to date with changes to the referenced folder?
    In Either case:
    - If I delete/move a file from a folder via the finder, will the "event" be corrupted, or "missing" a file?
    - If I delete/move a file a file from an event via iPhoto, will the file be deleted in reality, or just the reference/management of it?
    - If I find that some of my iPhoto "events" could be combined into one for ease of navigation:
    a) Can I do this? How?
b) Will that change the folder structure of my original ile?
    Finally,
    - If I go with 2 libraries (Managed for personal shots, and Referenced for other peoples shots), how do I switch between libraries? (I'd want the Managed/Personal shots to open upon launch by default.)
    Cheers! Thanks in advance!
    Ben

You're not quite getting what iPhoto is, what a managed and referenced Libraries are.
iPhoto is a Photo Manager. It replaces the Finder for anything to do with your Photos. It's your go-to app whenever you want to add, delete, view, manage or whatever your photos.
A Managed Library means that iPhoto manages the actual files. They are copied to the Library package on import.
A Referenced Library means that you manage the files. Then import them. After that you never access the files again. It's all done via iPhoto.
So, what you're trying to do - syncing a folder system with an iPhoto Library - is unnecessarily complex. Either use the Finder for your Photo or use iPhoto (or similar apps, like Aperture, Lightroom etc)
However my library is "managed", so while they weren't deleted from their location, the shots I am looking at inside of iPhoto are now contained inside the iPhoto Library file. Is that correct?
    Correct.
As I'm always adding files to those folders, and occasionally moving them around manually, my main question I have is concerning whether there's any way to keep those "events" up to date with what files are in the actual folders?
You can do this with Automator, Apple Script or with an app like Hazel: http://www.noodlesoft.com/hazel.php
But... why would you? iPhoto is a photo manager, why are you using the Finder for the job as well. Rather than update those folders, why not just import the updates to iPhoto?
I'm not opposed to having a 2nd REFERENCED library File for this sole purpose.
It would make no difference. All it does is make more work for exactly zero benefit.
    In a Referenced Library:
    - Can I keep the "event" up to date with changes to the referenced folder?
See above. But remember that every new import means at least one new event, so you'll need to consolidate events after the import.
    In Either case:
    - If I delete/move a file from a folder via the finder, will the "event" be corrupted, or "missing" a file?
Yes. In a Managed Library you never delete anything via the Finder. That's all done from within the iPhoto Window. (See what I mean about it replacing the Finder?). In a Referenced Library you need to delete the images from iPhoto first. Then you delete them from the folder structure. (See? More work/no benefit)
    - If I delete/move a file a file from an event via iPhoto, will the file be deleted in reality, or just the reference/management of it?
In a Managed LIbrary the shot gets moved to the iPhoto trash. Empty that and it's moved to the system trash. Empty that and it's gone. For Referenced see above.
    - If I find that some of my iPhoto "events" could be combined into one for ease of navigation:
    a) Can I do this? How?
b) Will that change the folder structure of my original ile?
You can consolidate Events simply by dragging one to another. You can move photos between event susing Flagging and so on. No, the files on the disk are never moved at all regardless.
Again, the location of the files on the disk makes no difference as you never access them anyway.
For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4491
If I go with 2 libraries (Managed for personal shots, and Referenced for other peoples shots), how do I switch between libraries? (I'd want the Managed/Personal shots to open upon launch by default.)
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Here's a post that describes why Referenced Libraries are a bad idea
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
    A General comment:
Deep breath. This is simple and you're making it very complex.
Use one managed Library. You can easily separate your personal work from these inspirational photos with a keyword. Events are a very limited form of organisation. iPhoto gets its real power from Albums and keyword. For instance:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Imovie upgrade lost folders within events

Now that I upgraded, I lost folders in my events labeled ex. "2013" or months "September" etc..So now I don't know what year/month the movie was taken when I go into the new Imovie program. How can I access the original movie date taken ? On the old version, I had all my movies organized by months and years. Now they are all by events. I have no idea what year each one was taken to make a project.

I f you have identified the problematic event you can exclude it from the update by taking out of the iMovie 9 Events folder and parking it temporarily somewhere else.  This should hopefully allow you to udate everything else. Obviously projects with media in that event will report missing media.    After that it will a case of identifying the problematic clip.
If you are mid-way through editing projects you may want to consider finishing them in imovie 9 before moving to iMovie 10.  As you are no-doubt aware there are lots of changes in imovie 10 which will take some time to get used to.

  • IPhoto quit working and lost my pics....

Today I was working on my pics that I downloaded and were located in Last Import.  I was working on them and half way through when IPhoto crashed.  When I got back in my pics were gone!  I have searched the computer but can't find them.
I am running macbook pro 13" laptop with:
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
    Running IPhoto 11 version 9.4.3
Any advice on where to find them?  They are probably my best work and don't want to loose them.  IPhoto has stopped before, but never lost my pics....
    Thanks!

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos

  • Upgrading iPhoto Library Manager and Lost folders...

I've been using iPhoto Library Manager (ver. 3.4.?) and iPhoto 8 with most photos on an external LaCie drive. I've just upgraded to iPhoto Library Manger ver. 3.5.6. I didn't know that a new version of that program would present an empty library list. I also had a good-old fashioned folder, on the LaCie drive that contained photos. After the upgrading, I cannot find that folder. I think that may have to do with iPhoto Library Manager creating a new library inside that plain-jane folder. Does anyone have experience with this program and how to find lost folders and photos?

Thank you and say "hi" to beautiful Ireland. My family stills farms east of Galway.
Let me explain further. In the last version of iPhoto Library Manager, before I upgraded to a newer version, when opened, it showed in the iPhoto Libraries list many libraries, most on the external drive and one on the HD of the Mac.
When I would select one of the libraries on the external drive (ed), then I would see what each of those libraries contained including several which had not only jpg photos but some with a "folder" containing those jpg photos. I could then open those libraries or even those "folders" and access the photos with iPhoto.
After upgrading iPhoto LM, the libraries list was blank. I began populating it again by selecting "Add Library" and selecting from the list that occurred. Here's where the mystery began. There was a "folder," not a library that came up on that list of photos on the ed. That folder contained hundreds of jpg photos. When I clicked on that folder, iLM said that there was no library in that folder and provided a button to create one. I did that. Since that point, the folder and its contained jpg photos have disappeared but there is "library" on the iPM list window that wasn't there before. When I select it to open in iPhoto, it shows there are no photos.
I hope this may not be as bewildereing to you as to me.

  • IOS 5 Update - Lost Photos, Musik, Apps ?!

    Hi,
iOS 5 - Update -> Lost Data -> Recovery -> More lost data
pretty ****** right now that i lost all my stuff on the iPhone and no Backup recovery in sight. When i updated to iOS 5 i had 2,1 GB of orignial 10 GB left. So i tried Backup recovery now i have 0,49 GB left.
    Anyone got a solution ?

you can redownload them and the ones you purchased just repurchase them and it will pop up saying "you already purchased this app, hit ok to download".
You probably did what i did, thinking "sync" was the back-up.  its not.
You should have 1. logged into the itunes store, 2. selected "transfer purchased from XX(your name) phone, under File on itunes tabs.  3. then updated to IOS 5.
Back-up would have worked properly then, by installing everything as it was before updating.
I lost all my apps too, and saved data on said apps, so i have to start all my games over again (really *****..i was doing good on all agry birds lol)  wife's i learned from my mistake and hers is just fine.

I clicked on the firefox update & lost my old firefox page with my aol start & quick pick tool bar & this "new" page takes up more space so when I click on a different subject, I have LESS space to view it. . The problem is with the page that opens at startup?
What does the new page look like? Can you paste the address into a reply?
Or if it doesn't have an address, maybe it's a page created by an add-on. Can you see any indication of the source of the page? Perhaps you could post a screen shot of what it looks like. This article has tips on that (make sure to delete to cover anything confidential): [[How do I create a screenshot of my problem?]]
To reduce content size, try the zoom feature: hold down the Ctrl key and tap the - key once or twice. If you want to reset the page to the standard size, you can hold down Ctrl and tap the 0 key once (zero).
But really we should get you back to the page you prefer, and hopefully with the additional details I requested we will be able to figure out what needs to get changed so you can do that.

  • Had to purchase two OS X system upgrades, new iPhoto etc. just to connect new iPhone 5 and now half my apps won't work. No rosetta and missing lost dogs pics from iCloud...HELP!

I had to purchase two OS X system upgrades, snow leopard and mountain lion,  just to connect my new iPhone 5 and somewhere between uploading iPhone 4S pics to iCloud some important pics disappeared then installed new iTunes and purchased new iPhoto all  just to connect new iPhone 5 and now half my apps won't work. No Rosetta to make apps work but its not as simple as upgrading apps and missing lost dogs pics from iCloud...HELP!

File a complaint with Apple for not giving adequate warning before upgrading OS X that it would render PPC programs dead.
That someone at Apple said requiring the iPhone 5 to have 10.8 (10.6.8 is the minimum actually) and in order to remain a loyal Apple customer they need to fix this mess and revert your machine and software back to 10.6.8
You see, 10.6.8 would have ran your iPhone 5 and ran your PPC based software, so whoever told you to upgrade to 10.8 was wrong and they need to fix your machine.
It can be reverted to 10.6.8 yourself.

  • Outlook Express corrupted, Lost Folders

My outlook Express prefs file (probably) got corrupted, giving error "End of File Reached". I looked at the Messages file and it had expanded to 241MB. The procedure to rebuild the prefs file creates a new EMPTY messages file and relabelling the old one. I saved the old messages file to my desktop and put a Lock on it. Is there any way to recover items from that file. I tried moving the file back into the Identity, but it is not recognized. 100 pictures and 200 JOKES are at stake here!

My situation is a little more complicated thaan the referenced item. I did the "compact" operation and allocated more file space. Then each message that came up had garbage in the message body - instead of the message. So I experimented. I set up an Entourage account and tried resending the items to that account (to myself). The garbage travelled along. So... I tried to send multiples at a time to Entourage. It worked (for a while). The messages came over intact. I thought I had cracked the code, until about 40 items were transferrred. OE got another "end of file reached". The messages file in the OE identity had expanded from just under 100MB to 241MB. I saved that file to the desktop with lock, moved the original messages file back into the identity along with it's associated prefs file and tried again. This time it expanded to 602MB. This is where I am right now.
I believe the data is still there, but index pointers have somehow gotten corrupted, causing the message file to fill with garbage. I recognized some of the garbage as software product names from my hard drive. Yikes!

io6 update lost Youtube in my iPad and is really slow and Facebook is slow and don't what to upload photo the iPad is slow to.

Youtube is no longer integrated with iOS. You can download the app fromt he app store.. it's designed for iPhone... but states that it works with iPad.
As for running slow... trying holding down the power and home button at the same time for 10 seconds to do a hard reset.
Also.. if you double tap your home button it will bring up a small window across the bottom of your screen... this is called the multitasker.
Hold your finger one of the apps til they jiggle... then tap the red minus button to kill the app. If you kill them all this should help your ipad run alot faster.

  • Mavericks Mail sync with Gmail - lost folders

I use gmail as my main email provider. I have had this syncronised to my MacBookPro, iPad and iPhone for a few years. It worked smothly. Whenever I created, modified or moved mail folders in the Mail app it was replicated in gmail.
I recently updated my Mac to Mavericks and continued using mail as normal. Last night I decided to reorder my Mail folders to put the folders I access the most higher up the list.
On doing this I lost ALL of my emails from EVERY folder, inluding the inbox. I was mortified. That was years of filed emails gone. I think they were moved to a trash folder (so they still exist, but mixed in with trash).
I have since read that this is a fault with Mavericks.
I really need to restore the emails to the folders they were in. Some of the emails were very important.
Can anyone advise how I can get these emails back to the folders they came from?
    Hope you can help

I am running "Mavericks" 10.9.5 on a new MacBook Pro, but I've had a similar problem with earlier computers and versions of the OS (10.8.x): Some of my emails that I keep stored on folders in my GMAIL mailbox appear scrambled in "Mail". The Header and subject line showing up in the preview pane (Message list) belong to one message, but the first two lines in the same pane belong to a totally different email (from a different sender). When I click on that message, I find that the whole message that is being displayed is from that other sender - header, subject line, "From" fields and body. No trace of the mail that should belong to the header and subject line in the preview pane! An example is shown at the bottom - the text starting with "Save $50..." is from a completely different sender and has nothing to do with "SAIL Magazine" - and the "SAIL Magazine" email is nowhere to be found. If I go to GMAIL's web interface, I can find BOTH messages without problem. (In case this is a useful hint: GMAIL in its infinite wisdom decided to NOT mark those particular 2 emails as "important" - shown by a yellow flag in the web interface for several OTHER emails). I should say that my setup is to use IMAP (imap.gmail.com), and all my folders are replicated on any of the several devices I use (two different Macs and iPhone) as well as on the web interface. Surprisingly, the specific problem shown below exists ONLY on my new MacBook Pro with Mavericks - both my other Macbook and my iPhone show both emails normally - but I had similar mess-ups on my other Mac as well. So it looks like that somehow MAIL and GMAIL still do not work properly together with IMAP - I would have thought this problem would be widely known and would have been fixed by Apple eventually? Anyway, any hints on how to fix this glitch would be much appreciated!  - Seb
