Update Macbook Pro 10.6.8 v2

Macbook Pro 10.6.8 v2
Hi, I have the above and I'm finding it difficult to open certain applications. It was suggested I upgrade to 10.6.8 but I'm unable to find it.
Any ideas?
I tried to upgrade to Yosemite but it said this wasn't compatible for my machine.
Thanks in anticipation.
Kim

Yosemite (and Mavericks) requires a mid 2007 or later iMac. You iMac, iMac 5.1 will run and max out on Lion. Also when upgrading from Snow Leopard, some you your apps may not work. See:
Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!
Upgrade to OS X Yosemite.
Free on the Mac App Store.
1. Check your Mac hardware.
To get details about your Mac model, click the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, choose About This Mac, then choose More Info. These Mac models are compatible with OS X Yosemite:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)

  • How to update MacBook Pro system10.6.8 to 10.7.5

I Need to update MacBook Pro 1.1 Intel Core Duo, Memory 2 GB, speed 2 GHZ 667  MHZ Boot Ram Version.  I would like to use Turbo Tax but it apparently does not support 10.6.8.  And the printer also supports only from10.7.5 x-10.8x,10.9. I have copied all my Microsoft doc from Version 2004.  I appreciate any help you can give me.

Sorry, but your model cannot run Lion or later. A Mac Pro 1,1 can run Lion. Maybe that's what you have confused with your MacBook Pro. Your's is an obsolete model with a Core Duo processor. Running any version of OS X requires a Core 2 Duo processor. See these following requirements.
    Upgrading to Lion
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
          1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • After 10.7.4 update macbook pro won't sleep

after 10.7.4 update, macbook pro won't sleep.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be applied

When trying to update my new Macbook Pro with Retina through Apple's software update application, I get the error:
The update "MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0" can't be applied
The update could not be expanded, and may have been corrupted during downloading.
I've already went through the process twice to download this update.

Same type of error, but getting 90% downloaded and error message that the update cannot be saved. But it then goes to the screen to apply, but with 90% only - no instructions that it will only download 90% and the rest will come during the update - not going to apply.

Very disappointing. I cannot wait. I will buy windows laptop because out of patient.

Does the October 2013 model not meet your needs? What advances would you expect or see in a 2014 model?

Hard drive sensor or logic board failure.
Try a SMC Reset, only thing I can help.

  • After Yosemite Update, Macbook Pro Frustratingly slow, along with many problems after

    My Info:
    Macbook Pro (2012)
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    OS X 10.10.3 (14D136)
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
186.54 GB free of 498.88 GB
Until the last OS X Update (Yosemite), I have had no problems with my almost three year old MacPro.
However, after the last update, I have so many problems with my mac, I just feel like throwing
    it out the window.
Unfortunately, I did not have a backup prior to the update, but I backed up my photos and files, then proceeded
to follow apple's instructions (apple support chat) to erase the HD and re-install yosemite from online. Then, I backed up my files and photos from my external drive. (I used TIME MACHINE)
    Fine in theory, but:
    1. my iphoto library was somehow lost, nowhere to ever be found again
    2. I suddenly have issues with my trackpad--the "double click" or "right" click refuses to work, I cannot drag and drop.
    3. I have java runtime error messages even upon startup, without internet connection, even though I have already deleted anything and everything java related.
    4. My safari is completely useless. Freezes even when only using one tab, must force quit every second.
    5. My computer decides by itself when to zoom in and out of a page.
    6. My apps are completely slow, I most always need to force quit them
    7. My trash has many issues-- If putting a file in the trash, it says "moving file to trash" for hours on end without ever completing the action, also, if I try emptying the trash, it's the same story.
    8. Settings. If I try to change a setting, it says "authenticating" for ever and ever without ever authenticating, and I am unable to change any settings.
I have talked to apple many times but have not yet reached a solution.
I have no other resolution at the moment, as I am in Taiwan for another month (My Chinese is limited and there are few, if none authentic Apple stores around)
I have one more month on my warranty so I can *possibly* take it in to a store when I return home, but I first wanted to ask here and see if anyone else stumbled upon the same issues, or if they had solutions.
    Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in safe mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • ITunes won't open after update; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5

iTunes won't open after update - help, please; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5.

i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did.
    step one-
Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes
(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.)
    step two-
download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here
(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).
although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions from http://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/
    step 3-
    open Terminal
    step 4-
enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
    killall iTunes
    killall "iTunes Helper"
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
    step 5-
drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock.
    step 6-
install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works.
    step 7-
go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time.
with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life.

  • Battery Not Charging after 10.6.8 Update (Macbook Pro 13' i5 2011)

    Hi,
I own a 4 months old Macbook Pro 13in with i5 processor. I was using it normally until yesterday, when a software update prompting for enhancements on thunderbolt drivers and some stuff regarding OS X Lion was displayed. I started the software update, let the macbook plugged in and went to sleep.
Today I found out that my battery is not charging anymore (when plugged in, the magsafe led lights green and the energy saver displays Not Charging). I've already tried to restart SMC to no result(unplugged, waited for 15 sec, plugged again and after 5 sec turned it on).
Basically, my macbook is now useless. I use it mainly in the college, cant have it always plugged in and my second half classes start tomorrow!
I dont have a time machine backup.
I dont want to open the macbook since its still under warranty. What should I do?

  • Mac defender security update, macbook pro no longer boots up

I applied the security update and then tried to reboot my macbook pro.  Black screen, doesn't reboot.  I tried to start up in single user mode, reset the PRAM ... and nothing.  My macbook pro is now a brick.  Wow.  Good thing I applied a security update for something I would never be stupid enough to click on in the first place.
    Any help would be appreciated...

    Greetings,
The security update is software only.  It has no impact on the hardware of the computer.
Do you get a boot chime at startup?
Do you hear / feel fan movement or any other evidence of activity from within the case of the computer?
Reset the SMC and then test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Try plugging the AC Adapter (3-prong not the 2-prong) into a different power outlet.
Try running the computer with the battery out if your model allows removal of the battery.

Receive error message, "The iPod cannot be synced.  The required disk cannot be found.  This is a iPod nano 6th Gen, all updates on iTunes and iPod, Macbook Pro OS 10.6.7.  This is getting frustrating.  I have changed USB ports, cables, reset, restored and was able to sync one time in parts, not all songs at once.  I have seen a lot of this same issue, will Apple please find a solution, nothing works, I think I wasted my money with this iPod.  I have the iPod touch, iPod shuffle, 4th gen iPod nano, iPhone and iPad.  This is the only device that has this issue.

I was actually able to investigate and solve the problem myself. After readng many posts, I found that someone else's tips worked for me:

Try running a disk check out the iPod using the tools provided by windows.
    To do this:
    1. Plug in your iPod and close iTunes.
    2. Go to "My Computer". Click on the iPod drive once. Go to File, and then click Properties.
    3. Go to the Tools tab. Under "Error Checking", click Check Now.
    4. Check both boxes. One says "Automatically fix file system errors" and the other says "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". Place a check mark next to each of these options and hit Start.
The scan may take several minutes or more to complete, but once it has, go ahead and restart iTunes, and try re-syncing files to your iPod.

  • No audio after Mountain Lion 10.8.3 update Macbook Pro Mid 2009

A few days ago I downloaded some updates for Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro Mid 2009. After that there is no sound and internal speakers are not listed as an output device. The startup sound is still working (I would guess it uses the same speakers?) but nothing else makes a sound through the speakers. Also headphones are working. I'm not 100% sure if my OS version vas 10.8.2 before the update or not.
I have tried to input the headphones in and out many times to make sure that no microswitches are stuck. Also I have reset SMC and NVRAM/PRAM and reinstalled Mountain Lion. I even installed Lion (10.7.0) to be sure but it still won't work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • 10.6.8 update Macbook Pro (2006) audio dropouts

Hi, I've got this nightmare problem, since I updated to OS10.6.8, my Macbook Pro late 2006 drops the audio, randomly, rendering the whole caboodle absolutely useless as a studio tool. It still works out of the headphone output, but not with my MOTU 828, or an M-Audio FW interface I tried it with either. Seems to happenw ith Logic, iTunes, whatever.
Has anybody else had this problem, perhaps suggest a solution? One Mac expert said he thought it was a firewire port issue, and nothing could be done without replacing the motherboard.
There was a wierd glitch with saving/storage afer 10.6.8 upgrade, and I used this fix..http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3968
Don't know if that could have affected anything..
    Thankyou Mac world people.

Did you follow these steps, EXACTLY?

  • After 10.5.5 update, MacBook Pro LCD not working.

After I updated to 10.5.5 my MacBook Pro worked fine, until I put it to sleep. Now, the screen won't come back on even after restarting and removing the battery.
Also, I can't even get an external monitor to work.
I can hear the volume idicator sounds working when I adjust the volume so I know that the computer is working, just not the screen.

No guarantee but there are two things that sometimes help:
Reboot into the Safe mode (hold down Shift key on boot) but when you get to the login screen click restart.
If that doesn't help, try resetting the PRAM.
