Update mail on v10.6.8

Hello everyone!
I tried browsing the previously posted topics about mail and the osx 10.6.8 but didn't find an answer.
At office, I sometimes need to use a not-so-old desktop iMac 8 that runs on osx v10.6.8. With this computer, the Mail software version is 4.6. Working good actually, but since I use everyday a MacBook on 10.8.5 with Mail 6.6, I miss some of the features of that 6.6 version when I use the iMac.
So, I thought it could be good to update Mail, but I didn't get if that's possible, and if it is, how to do it.
Can someone help me on this? Thanks a lot!

Mail 4.6 is the newest version that will work on Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
You may be able to install Mavericks on the iMac 8 : OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
but be sure to backup first & check that all software & peripherals will work afterwards.

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)

  • I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. Help!

I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are.

  • Can't launch updated Adobe Reader v10.1.3 in Firefox v3.6.28 in Mac OS X 10.5.8?

    Hello.
Is it me or does the newly updated Adobe Reader v10.1.3 does not load from Firefox v3.6.28 in Mac OS X 10.5.8? This is after I click on any PDF links on a web site. Safari had no problems though!
    Thank you in advance.

It's not about that, I think, as I got the exactly same bug with Firefox 12.0 / OS X 10.7.3 after the last Adobe Reader update.
However, the release notes are interesting, see p. 6: "If you still require a 32-bit solution, this update also supports Mozilla Firefox for Macintosh when it is opened in 32-bit mode."
So, it seems that the last update is pushing the inline viewer (NPAPI?) plugin to 64-bit Firefox, even that it's known that it wouldn't work. In Mozilla forums some had tried to fix this by forcing Firefox to open in 32-bit mode (via Finder -> Applications -> right-click Firefox -> Get Info -> check Open in 32-bit mode), but I'd rather see the bug itself fixed.
Interesting. Where are you seeing this in Mozilla forums? I didn't see anyone talk about this Adobe Reader problem in Firefox newsgroups on news.mozilla.org news server even after I posted my issue.
It's in this bug report: http://support.mozilla.org/fi/questions/925055 - confirmed already by 230 people, by the way...
Sorry to hear that the 32-bit workaround didn't work for you. (I haven't even tested it yet myself, just disabled the plug-in altogether to get the pdf files even loaded to Preview...)

  • Update mail entries in Directory server 5.2

    Hi All,
we have a request of updating mail addresses.. that to only after @. our server have around 650000 entries.
One solution we are thinking of is exporting the database... changing the entries and importing again
Can any one help me with any simple solution for this? or any script?
    Thanks
    Sridhar

Assuming you take the approach of exporting and importing and you are changing all mail entries to the same new domain name and you are using the standard "mail" attribute you could do the following:
Export your data to LDIF. Say for example you call the LDIF file "old.ldif". Then run the following sed command:
sed 's/^mail:\ \(.*\)@\(.*\)/mail:\ \[email protected]/g' old.ldif > new.ldifThe "new.ldif" file will have all the email addresses with "@newdomain.com" in them. You could then import new.ldif.
As etst123 mentioned if you are in a replicated environment you may then have to re-initialize your consumers after your import even if your initial export included replica information.
One other thing. If you have static mail groups with users that have the old domain you will need to modify those as well.

  • ITunes U Update mailing list

I have been assigned to share administrative duties on our college's iTunes U site. I am not the primary administrator.
Our primary admin gets "iTunes U Update" email postings sent via [email protected] . He has to forward these messages to me. I'd like to get subscribed to this email list as well, so that I can receive these messages directly.
I've already sent my question to iTunes U Request ([email protected]), and they replied:
At this time, there is no public iTunes U mailing list. We currently request that all questions be submitted to the forums at:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes_u/
Any suggestions on how I can get subscribed to the "iTunes U Update" mailing list?

There is no email list exactly; those announcements are sent to the site administrator. Your school can can set your site administrator by logging into iTunes U as an admin, then going to "Site Settings". This loads a page that includes a section for "Site Administrator", where you can specify a contact name and e-mail address.
They don't support having multiple e-mail addresses, so if you want more than one person to get the e-mail, you should setup a group e-mail address (or group email forward) that you can all receive messages from.

  • Unable to update Mail after reinstall in order to get it work

    Dear fellow Apple members,
I face a problem which I didn't see coming. Because I screwed my inbox up, I wanted to reinstall the mail application and import an imbox from a backup. I reinstalled it succesfully with the installation disks, but when I tried to open it, I get a message that it can't be opened because of the operating system (10.6.8) and being the original mail version of snow leopard, I thought: just an update would do the trick. That's where the problem lies. I can't figure out how to update Mail, because when I select 'software update' on the Apple menu, I doesn't get listed.
I honestly don't know what to do.
Hoping for your enthousiasm and thanks in advance,

  • Did last security update 2009-02 also update Mail?

Did last security update 2009-02 also update Mail?
    My Mail is v2.1.3 (753.1)
Since the update it crashes at random and sometimes Nothing shows in the body of the email (no message), I quit and restart Mail and the message body is there??
    Could it be something else?

    Hi Krag,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Updating Mail (the application)

Mail is acting funky, crashing. Tried deleting lots of messages (9,000 in inbox). No success. I haven't updated Mail since July 2009. What updates have come out since then? I found an update for those using X10.5 (I'm using 6.8), but it told me it couldn't do that update to my "volume."
    I am using Mail 4.5
Surely there is a newer update.
    Ashley

Any updates to the Mail application would come as part of the updates to Mac OS X. There are no separate updates available.
For assistance with the crashing problems, I'd suggest posting in the Mac OS X 10.6 forum. Posting here unnecessarily limits those who'll see your question to MacBook users, where someone running some other model might have suggestions. When you repost, please include more details, especially the type of mail account(s) you're using (e.g. POP, IMAP, Exchange). Also list any third-party plugins to Mail, if you have any installed (SpamSieve, MailHub, et. al.)
    Regards.

  • Update Mail 1.3 to 2.1?

I need to update Mail 1.3 to 2.1 so I can import my husband's 472 email addresses from Entourage. He's running OS X 1.3 on his titanium G4 powerbook so he can't upgrade the OS because it's not an Intel computer. I've tried to find a Mail updater download on the Apple site, but can't find anything. I tried to copy Mail 2.1 from my iMac core 2 duo to his powerbook over the network, but that failed. Anyone have a suggestion?

In order to "upgrade" Mail you must upgrade your OS X version. Both of you need to update at least to Tiger (10.4.x.) An Intel Mac is not required to upgrade any Mac to Tiger or Leopard, although there are system requirements your hardware must meet. Your G4 PB can be upgraded to Leopard if it has an 867 MHz processor or faster and 512 MBs of RAM. For Tiger the only requirement would be 256 MBs of RAM. You will need a DVD drive for installation.
Look for copies of Tiger at eBay or FastMac.com. Be sure you only purchase the retail version which consists of two DVDs - one has a black label with a large gray "X", and the other is the Developer Tools installer disc. Do not buy discs that have gray labels. These are OEM discs and are machine specific hence they may not work with your computers.

  • Updated to 10.5.8 with software update; Mail won't launch on G5 Power PC

After re-booting I get the message: "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X"
I have installed all software updates that are current. Everything else seems to be working fine. Ideas?

Interesting, I never see a COMBO update via SU, but never miss installing them when they first come out. It might be that it didn't do its job properly. Give the manually downloaded one a go and also check what Ernie recommended. I don't use Mail, Eudora's my mail client, except to occasionally check that it's working. So far it does without any errors. Don't forget to repair permissions and restart after installing it.
