  • Problem after update, on boot I just get blue screen

    Hi,
I ran into issue with my wife iMac that I can't figure out.
After recent update, first Skype would slow everything down but only on my wife account (it is her machine). When we log in under different account, everything seems to be working.
Now all I get is blue screen where login screen should be (after restart_.
When I try to boot (I restart it by using button on the back) with pressing Shift to go into Safe Mode, it works ok.
I guess there is a problem with recent update, how do I roll it back. Any other suggestions would be helpful.
I am not experienced Mac user, this is really frustrating and this is not the first thing that doesn't work. However this really prevents us to use it at all. Any help would be welcome.
    Thanks.
    Zeljko

Try running +Repair Disk Permissions+ in Disk Utility after starting up.
I find it to be a good practice to run +Repair Disk Permissions+ BEFORE installing software updates, especially those that update the system.

  • Mac mini updated now just get blue screen and a spinning wheel

    Mac Mini ppc with tiger.
Updated today (safari, OSX and itunes) after freeing up some space by copying files off to a USB drive. After reboot it gets to a blue screen with a spinning "wheel" and stays there for hours, never gets any further. Will boot to command prompt, target disk mode and a set of DVDs borrowed from work (which won't install as they are for iMac!) but not to anything GUI from the hard disk as far as I can tell atm. Disk utility on the DVDs reports no errors on the internal disk.
All was well before the updates. There was one "funny" but I'm not sure if its relevant. During use today the desktop appeared to get bigger than the screen when changing the screen saver to a snow flake one I used last Christmas (with no problems). As the mouse moves around the screen the screen scrolls in the opposite direction (only about 5 pixels) as used to happen in the old days on my PC when the graphics cards supported higher resolutions than the screen did.
Of course, as luck would have it, I can't find my original tiger disks!
    Help!

Safe mode likely won't help, but it is achieved by holding the Shift key down during reboot - press and hold down when you hear the chime. It takes a while longer to boot into safe mode than booting normally, and it loads only core MacOS modules.
One issue that was a perpetual risk with installing updates in versions of MacOS X prior to Leopard was the possibility of disrupting prebinding. Prebinding is the process whereby library files are linked to executables, and problems can occur is applications are running (and in active use) during the installation of updates. If prebinding is disrupted, the system can fail to boot after an update, and the blue screen is a common symptom.
IF prebinding is a problem and you can't boot into safe mode, boot into single user mode (hold Ctrl-S during boot from hearing the chime) and then at the prompt, type 'sudo update_prebinding' (no quotes of course) and hit enter. Enter your admin password when requested, and sit back and wait for the command prompt to reappear, at which point the prebinding update is complete - it could take several minutes.
If that doesn't help, your initial post implies you do not have your original install disks - you may however need them, or a retail MacOS installer, because it may be necessary to perform an archive and install on the hard drive.

Normally you have to get these from the App store.  Open the App Store application in your Applications folder. Have a look at the category Apple Apps.

I recently updated my MacBook Pro to the new software, and now my iMessage and my FaceTime are not connected with my phone number like it is supposed to be. How do I get them to match so that I would be able to use my cellphone number on my notebook?

To reset any OS X program just go to the folder and trash the affected files.
    Open a new Finder Window
Click "Go" in the above status bar
Click and HOLD the "option/alt" key and you will see "Library" now show in the above list
Click Library while still holding the option/alt key and a new window will open with all of your system files
Go to the preference file (NOT Preference Panes)
    Locate a file named <com.apple.FaceTime.bag.plist>
    Locate another file named <com.apple.FaceTime.plist>
    Locate the file <com.apple.iMessage.bag.plist>
Drag the files to the trash
    Delete the trash
Close FaceTime and iMessage if not already closed
Relaunch FaceTime and iMessage from Applications folder
This should reset the program back to default. You will have to put your information back into the program but it should work.
    Good Luck.

I just updated my MacBook Pro to 10.7.5 and got a message that the AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext was improperly installed and cannot be used. How to I find and install this extension?

Open the AppleScript Editor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, copy and paste the entire following line into it, and press the Run button:
do shell script "chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" with administrator privileges
If it doesn’t work, throw that item away and then reinstall iTunes.

    Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
    Nathan

Iv tryed this numerious times still keeps going back to pasword. Can not get any further. Tried restart holding shift key.. still nothing. What do i do?

    Thank you for your help.
I couldnt get to the hard drive/ desktop. Soft login not even working. So i could not do any of that.
In the end i took it to Apple and its actually the hard drive on its way out. A common issue with that series of Mac. Funny seeing i dont use this mac much. However being 2.5 years old and out of warrently, Apple have recognise this issue with this series/ Model and installing a new hard drive at no cost.
Very luck and greatful. And not feeling so dumb that it was something i did or could troubleshoot myself.
Hope this helps others that it just might be your hard drive failing.

I am having the same problem.  I even changed my password and updated all of my security information.  Now it just gives me an error and retry message, which of course also does not work.  Went to support and was going to open a chat (seemed the simpler option) and received a message that my support has expired for this serial number unless I want to pay $29.00.  So I chose the option to call later, which was the exact time suck I was trying to avoid.  Why wouldn't the new operating system also update the apps that were already part of my old platform?

  • Updated to snow leopard and now get blue screen

    Hi there,
I recently updated to snow leopard and now I get blue screen on start-up.
I manage to get to enter my password and then to my desktop for a few seconds before it flicks back to my login.
I tried using disk utility from the install disc and it said HD appears to be ok. But it hasn't solved the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

    Try restarting your Mac.
If that doesn't help, open a Finder window. Select your Home folder (it has a small house icon) in the Sidebar on the left.
Now open the Library folder then the Prefernces folder.
Move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash. Restart your Mac one more time.

I'm trying to update my iPad to iOS 8.1.2 and it won't update?

Is it perhaps downloading the update?
Have you tried rebooting the iPad?  Hold down the home and power/sleep buttons for 10 to 15 seconds or until the Apple logo appears. This should reboot the iPad.  Then try the update again.
If all else fails, you can try to update through iTunes on a computer.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hold the shift key down at the sound of the chime, release when the progress bar appears) Safe Mode will take longer to boot than normal.
