Update new iPod before connecting?

Hi folks. I just got a replacement unit (20GB click wheel) due to drive failure. I have installed the latest iPod Updater and the newest version of iTunes on my iMac.
When I connect my new iPod for the very first time, should I run the iPod Updater or will this be done automatically at the set up process??

no need to do it
if it needs to be updated, it will tell you and take you thru the process

I restored my ipod before connecting it to the computar and now it just stays at the screen like when its the silver apple is there a way to fix this?

    - Have you tried resetting the Ipod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.-
    - Next connect it to your computer.  If iTunes sees the iPod restore the iPod,  First restore from backup and if problem persists restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
    - If iTunes does not see the iPod first try placing the iPod in recovery mode.  If not seen try placing it in DFU mode:

I have just bought an ipod classic, I already have an ipod nano.  The new ipod was connected to the computer to charge and it named itself with my name on the old nano, how do I get the computer to recognise the new one?

My mistake, it was nothing to do with format.  It woldn't sync because my movies were HD.  HD movies won't sync to an iopd classic 160 GB but when you purchase a HD movie, itunes gives you a SD vervsion of the movie which is compatible with the ipod.  Just needed to go to store, click movies, click purchased and untick the HD box and there you have the SD versions.  Download the SD versions and then sync your ipod and bobs you uncle, movies are on the ipod

  • How to update new iPod to iOS 5.1 then restore from previous iPod's backup

If I want to restore my 'new' (refurbished) iPod from a back up of my old one, I need to get iOS5.1 on this one.
I can't restore it right now because I don't have the computer it's synced with, and I was planning on getting iOS 5.1.1 on my old one before it broke.
This is what I think I should do (when I have the right computer):
    Update software to iOS 5.1
    Restore from backup.
    Update software to iOS 5.1.1
    right?
The only thing is, I will have to set up my new iPod 'as new iPod' to update the software because the option isnt there until your iPod is set up in iTunes (keep in mind, I'm not using the computer with the iTunes I will be syncing it with for the rest of its life). Will this change anything?
And should I wait to do all this until I'm on the computer with the normal iTunes I'll be using, or does it not matter because I was planning on restoring it anyways?
    Pleaaasee hellppp!

I don't have my old iPod, just the refurbished one, but I backed up my previous one beforehand when it was connected to my computer.
On my new one, I need to update it to iOS 5.1 to to be able to restore it from a backup of my old iPod because that's they system the old one was using, and I also want to update it to iOS 5.1.1, which I can't do right away or I still won't be able to restore it. I figured I would have to:
    1. Update Software of new iPod to iOS 5.1
    2. Restore new iPod from backup of old one.
    3. Update software to iOS 5.1.1
    Am I right?

  • Brand new ipod touch connected, device recognized, but nothing happens?

I bought a brand new iPod touch 2nd gen two days ago and as I was very excited to plug it into my computer, sadly, nothing happened. iTunes recognizes the device and can be seen under Devices, but NOTHING happens and there are no other functions to click on at all. No set up, just a blank white screen, and yet, the iTouch screen still says to connect it to iTunes which it already is....
I have reinstalled iTunes, restarted my computer many times, updated it to the latest iTunes version, and still this problem persists. Can anyone help me out please!
    Thanks in advance.

  • How can I re-name the name the system automatically gave the new iPod I connected to my iTunes account?  It did not give me a choice, but automatically named it.

I got a new iPod Nano for my 80-year-old father who lives with me.  I already uploaded his cds to my iTunes account, but when I connected the new iPod to my Mac to put his music on it, the program automatically named his iPod with MY name.  I want to differentiate it from my iPod Nano, but it never gave me a chance to give his iPod his name instead of mine.  He will not have an iTunes account; I will handle uploading his music and managing his iPod for him, but I need it to set up under his name, not mine.  My iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc.  all sync automatically with my entire iTunes library.  I only want to selectively upload music to his iPod.  How can I rename what iTunes is calling his iPod?   Help! -    Judy- Charleston

  • Can I setup apps on a new iPod before I give it to someone?

I want to preload some paid apps on a gift iPod before I give it to the recipient.
Can I do that with my Apple ID and still transfer the iPod to them to claim as their iPod in iTunes, or do I need to have access to their Apple ID to do that?
If I have access to their AppleID (it's my elderly Mom), can I set it up with my active iTunes program, or do I need to go to a different computer to do that?
    Thank you everyone.

No.  Downloads / Purchases from the iTunes and App Stores are forever tied to the Apple Id that bought/downloaded them. Apps will then always require that Apple Id to update. And can never be transferred to another ID.
You should never want to do this.
If you want them to have some specific Apps, you can Gift them to the recipients Apple ID if they have one.
Send iTunes Gifts - Apple Support
Scroll down to the section titled: Gift an item on an iOS device
You should also not need to go through iTunes for the setup. Just follow the onscreen prompts on the iPod touch.

  • Trying to update new iPod Touches to iOS 4.1 NOT 4.2 in iTunes 9.2.1

I have older eMac 1GHz PowerPC G4 running 10.4.11 Tiger. Have iTunes 9.2.1 because iTunes 10 isn't supported by tiger. Just bought my kids iPod Touch 2nd gen with iOS 3.1.3 on them. I have same Touch (all gotten from Apple refurbed) and mine has been updated to iPod version iOS 4.1- NOW; iTunes says when my kids Touch's are attached that the new software iOS 4.2 is available. BUT- iOS 4.2 isn't supported by iTunes 9. I have the iPod upgrade file named iPod2,14.1_8B117Restore.ipsw but how can I get that to load on my kids iPod Touches? It tries to put 4.2 on and I get an message saying something like "this is the latest software" or some such thing....
Can I make iTunes install the 4.1?? Sigh!

I was able to replace IOS 4.2.1 with the real Apple IOS 4.1 through iTunes 9.2.1 by using the tips found at http://www.ihackintosh.com/2010/11/downgrade-ios-4-2-1-to-4-1-for-iphone-ipad-an d-ipod/
The tricky part is this that you must follow Steps 1-3 as it says and then only follow step one just after. When you force your iPod in DFU mode again (showing the itunes icon and USB plug) unplug from the computer running iTunes 10 and plug into the one running iTunes 9.2.1.
If the computer with iTunes 9.2.1 is a Mac running OSX 10.4, then force shut-down your mac right away. Restart your mac and then turn on iTunes only. The iPod will synch with iTunes and then you can restore from that mac or a backup.
Your music and other files will be gone but you can now use the device with OSX 10.4
    Hope this helps.
