Update on P6N SLI Platinum issue: 2nd board works nicely
Well I got my new replacement board from the newegg.com Memphis, TN warehouse and this one boots up with no bios error message pertaining to using the wrong processor + only running at 50% of the processor speed. This one recognizes the CPU default speed perfectly. I also had been using the stock Intel heatsink inside my Antec Super LanBoy case (120mm flow through ventilation) with the CPU temps idle at 46 degrees Celsius. I installed the Zalman CNPS9500AT Cooler with Arctic Silver 5 and from below you can see the idle temp now. Averages around 33 degrees Celsius with the case closed up and under my desk. Amazed at how quiet the hole setup is. The fact that the cooler blows into the rear 120mm exhaust fan is a perfect air cooling setup.
Now to RMA the first board back to newegg.com

Thats the Core temps that seem to run hotter from my understanding, the CPU temp is the first figure (Temp1) shown in SpeedFan at 31C

One question though.... Your SpeedFan shows HD temps. I have a Raptor-X 150Gig and 3 Seagate 300 gig drives. I don't see how I can get temps from them. Maybe I missed something with SMART? I didn't think I had to enable anything.
Now that looks nice indeed on air, my Orthos temp1 can get up to 45C. With the stock Cooler I witnessed 63C and quit at that point ...
I don't have anything out of the ordinary setup to see the HD temps.

Maesus that was the main concern before purchasing this Cooler but after reading lots of reviews with it in the factory recommendation installation I have not noticed it getting hot at all. As a matter of fact its not even that warm. Using the Intel Heatsink the PSU got very warm to the touch.

The board at default bios setting will only run the processor at half speed. Even disabling the necessary bios settings still will not allow it to run at stock clocks. The only way to get the board to run past half speed is to set the FSB to 1333 MHz, all while upping the Vcore, NB and Memory voltages just a tad. Only problem the CPU temperature stays around 49 degrees Celsius.
Lastly the eSATA output only worked for a very brief moment. Even with the bios 1.1 from the factory wouldn't work.

All I read about Nvidias 650 chipset is that MSI seems to make the best job.
So dont`t by an Asus or Abit board with 650 chipset. It seems you would come out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Your probably right and sure hope the new board corrects this issue. It really doesn't seem to be a processor related problem since others get the weird bios post too. I went ahead and ordered a Zalman|CNPS9500 cooler also as I think it will work well in my Antec LanBoy case that has 120mm fans that pull front to back. With this cooler the air passes through the heatpipe tunnel which will blow directly into the rear exhaust 120mm fan.
All this rebooting has buggered my WinXP install too it seems so I'll be reinstalling that once I confirm the new board is OK.
I know one thing is that this setup at 3.33 GHz with the 8800 GTS OC 640MB all settings on Max runs F.E.A.R really well. Looking forward to the release of Unreal Tournament 3.

NEW CPU- P6N SLi Platinum issues. (no signal) wolfdale 3.16ghz
Ok story short. I upgraded my old pc fully with a new gfx card, ram, and new mobo and power supply. And finally I have come to upgrade the last piece, the cpu.
Current System Specs.
3.0ghz Intel P4.
4gb Ram
8800gt
upgrading the cpu to a LGA775 Wolfdale 3.16ghz Core 2 Duo (which the board supports). First thing I got no signal. Put in my old cpu and got back on the web and did tons of research. Narrowed it down to the BIOS being outdated and the CPU being very new. So I used the USB tool and updated the bios to the most current one. (looked up the CPU and downloaded the corresponding bios fom this site). Now I put in the CPU and I still get no signal after the bios update.. Is there some other settings I need to change? As far as I am aware all BIOS settings are default other than fan speed which I set to 62.5%min speed.
Really want to use this great CPU! help appreciated.Nevermind, misread
According to Intel site, there is only 1 E8600, which indeed is supported.
Could go for that, but I'd still go for an E8400, its cheaper and you most likely will get it to run as fast as an E8600, by just upping FSB.
You already have the latest bios so both are supported by the board

This message is intended for anyone who has the MSI P6N SLI Platinum & E8400 in a working state.
I've had the pleasure of perusing these forums for a while in hopes of finding an answer as to why my E8400 isn't working with my P6N SLI Platinum. I've updated my BIOS, I've RMA'd my chip, I've even contacted MSI support (with no reply I might add). I have been so careful when handling these components and thoroughly reading the instructions, to no avail. I've got the board and all components working with a different processor. I've tried the voltage modifications that many have said work, I've tried different memory, I even tried a different video card. So I'm stuck in the same boat as many it seems, however there are one or two posts on this forum and others where people have said they actually got it to work!
So now I really hope I can get this question answered - What is a working config? One of the things I haven't tried yet is a new power supply. My current PS is 650w, but has the 4 pin CPU power connector. From the posts I've read, it shouldn't matter if I have the 4 or the 8. But in reality, does this CPU work on the P6N Plat with an 8 pin connector? I'd be willing to go buy a new PS if thats the case! What else could possibly be the issue? Any and all feedback is appreciated. i really didn't want to start up another thread for this proc/board issue, but perhaps someone else has joined this board by now that may provide the little piece of info that I've been missing.

Aaronaccording to the website, the 1.6 BIOS had cpu updates in march so I's assume it would have support for the E8400.

P6N SLI Platinum, audio driver update gives "No Driver was supported..."
I have the audio driver from the CD that came with the mobo, but I wanted to update it to the new version. Currently I have R1.67 2.32, I tried to install the driver (R1.83 2.51) from http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1140 but get the message "No Driver was supported in this driver package".
Also, I went to the Realtek site and got their even newer driver R1.84 but it asked me to remove the previous driver first, I'd rather check with the boards first to see what is going on.

Another off topic question. Does the Dual Core Center work ok with Vista x64? Wondering just in case before I get to using it. On my first Vista install is seemed to work, 2nd format it would come up with 2 error messages and not start:
"Error! unable to load ntuneoem.dll" and "Failed to load overclocking driver! This program must run as an administrator."
I have ntune installed on my 2nd format (which I found out doesn't work in Vista 64 properly) but cannot uninstall it from Add/Remove. A wizard window comes up and closes in the same seconds when I click uninstall. Tried to uninstall using the MSI CD which with I loaded it, still gives an error (tried to google the error msg but the msg is extremely rare and doesn't point to the problem). Going to have to manually remove it it seems and hope I get it all. -
P6N Sli Platinum front audio panel and CPU temp voltage issues

I got my P6N Sli Platinum yesterday, build up my computer without any major issues. However I have noticed that my audio front panel does not work. It could not detect my microphone when i plug it into front auido panel, it works fine for the rear auido panel though.
Another issues is I highly doubt the accuracy of CPU temp sensor. Msi 's software monitor reports my CPU temp is around 19-20 degree, I know that's too good to be true even I am using a water cooling system. Btw my cpu is E6600. Anyone else has the similar issues?
The third, I notice my CPU voltage is bouncing between 1.1 to 1.24 in CPU-z. And the multiplier is changing from 6 to 9, frequency is changing from 1.6g to 2.4g. I only see this in CPU-z. Msi 's own software reports CPU running at 2.4g though. Is this cpuz issue or something else?
Finally, any tips to max the overclock potential of this board? I have overclocked to 3.1g but there are some crashes. Going higher the board just won't boot up. I read a review on anandtech.com says 1.22 bios is good for oc. Where can i download that? I only found 1.1 bios on official site.

C2D-CPUs have a digital internal sensor to monitor CPU Core temperatures. Have a look at those with Core Temp ( http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ ). This Tool reads the temperature data directly from the register of your CPU. There is nothing wrong with the sensor. It is rather the MSI tool that does not read the data it provides correctly.

There is no issue. What CPU-Z allows you to see there is the C1E-feature of your CPU at work. When there is nothing to do your processor will automatically reduce Core Voltages and frequency to save power and keep temperatures down. As soon as the work load increases the multiplier is set back to x9 and core voltages increase dynamically. It is meant to be a good thing.
I have overclocked my system a little and I like that the C1E feature is still working at this speed setting CPU frequency to 2GHz and core voltage to 1.144v when my system is idle.
If you have problems with this feature you can turn it off in BIOS. The option is labeled as "C1E Support" and might be hidden somewhere. You may be able to hit "F4" to unhide it.
The MSI utilities are not the best tools to monitor your system. CPU-Z, Core Temp, Everest, Speedfan, Memset, Rightmark Memory Analyzer for example do a far better job. -
Net Issues with P6N SLI Platinum
Hello all. I am having issues getting the internet to work on my new system with the following specs:
Mother Board = MSI NVidia nForce 650i SLI Chipset Based P6N SLI Platinum
CPU ............ = Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, LGA775 Pkg 2.40 GHz, 8MB L2 Cache Total, 1066 MHz FSB
Memory ...... = Geil 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 800 CL=5-4-4-12 1.9-2.5v (x4)
PSU ............ = Zerodba 620W
Video .......... = EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS
Hard Drives . = Seagate Barracuda 320 GB SATA 3/GB Transfer
OS .............. = Vista Ultimate OEM 64-Bit
I can't get the system to recognize the router or network or even access the internet when plugged directly into the cable modem. I've power cycled plenty of times, and the other systems in my network work without fail. I've disabled UAC, windows firewall, and anything else that might be interfering on the software end. I have installed the latest drivers from the msi site, and have even installed the latest nforce drivers from NVidia's site as well. P6N SLI Platinum (MS-7350) BIOS issue
I RMA'ed my P6N SLI Platinum MS-7350 and got back another identical board. However, this one has BIOS 2.7 in it. Bios 2.7 according to MSI page on this board is actually for the P6N SLI (also a MS-7350). The latest BIOS for the Platinum is 1.7. Im confused. Should I reflash it to 1.7 so that it has the proper BIOS instead of a BIOS from the P6N SLI not platinum? I know I have the platinum because the box says so AND the board has the copper heat piping across it unlike the MSI picture of the SLI (non-plat).

Then they clearly did return the Platinum board to you, as the P6N does not have those extras.
And (apparently) the v2.7 BIOS works with the Platinum as well as the plain P6N. Fascinating. Maybe you want to contact Tech Support about it, but if it's working--why are you concerned?
I'm interested because my P7N Platinum has a v1.3 BIOS, and (like your P6N) the lesser-capability board, the P7N, is up to BIOS v2.2. So I have wondered "Why is the simpler board getting more recent updates than the more sophisticated one?" But my system is working perfectly--it ain't broke so I don't need to fix it! -
P6N SLI Platinum BIOS issue...
So I purchased an e8400 processor after the 1.6 BIOS update came out for my P6N SLI Platinum, got it yesterday. I put the processor in and it didn't work . I turned to Google to have the internet fix the issue, and it seems if I adjust some options in my BIOS, it may make the e8400 work. Two of the things it said to change were EIST and C1E. I went into my BIOS, and tried hitting F4 in the CPU menu to get C1E to show up, but it won't. The EIST option is no where to be found either...
Anyone else running into the same issue, or got a e8400 to work after changing stuff in the BIOS?

Dont clear the bios after you take out the old cpu or it wont work
I have been tinkering with it all day just to see what the actual problem is and it doesnt seem that it is the EIST OR C1E. from what I have done it seems that it is a problem with the voltages that keeps it from booting. If you change those with the other cpu in and then save and exit. Dont let it reboot, shut it off before it starts to boot up again and put the e8400 in -

So I upgraded to 4gb ram finally, and have got it to work without errors in dimm slots 2 and 4, and have been having performance issues such as slow loading, stuttering in games, and just in general slowdown with loading up applications, but absolutely no crashes or freezes of any kind, no BSODs or anything else that would be hardware related I assume.
Defragged, fresh install of windows 7, video card drivers updated and everything else checks out fine. The only thing I can think of is that over in HardForum doing a google search brought me to this post:http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1164174 with issues related to 4gb on the mainboard having slowdowns with older bios versions.
Seeing as how this is relevant to me getting new memory, my patriot memory gave out with BSODs so I was forced to upgrade but had way better performance with just 2gb stick of ram (even in win7).
Should I do a bios update?

I haven't really done much upgrading since I purchased this a few years back, and quite surprised to see the hit and stuttering in performance in games all of a sudden after upgrading to new ram, and the ram tested out fine for 3 days straight doing multiple passes with memtest 4.0. I tried doing it in DIMM slots 1 and 3 but have been getting errors, maybe I've got a bad board?

Hey guys.. I think I checked everything, but want to make sure.
Relatively new P6N (bought it, didn't have processor, stored it for the last 6 months) Platinum board. Finally got the CPU and Memory today (info below). Plugging it in, and I get.. nothing. No post, no beeps (with connected speaker), all lights on D-bracket *OFF*, all lights on keyboard *ON*. All fans come on as well. Both yellow/orange LED and the green LED between PCIs come on.
I slowly disconnected everything, and even ONLY with the board and CPU (no vid card and RAM, only front-panel and D-Bracket connected), still same result. Now, I'm thinking it MAY be the CPU, however, I would expect to still get ALL RED on the D-Bracket as per the manual. I don't have ready access to another 775 processor.
Items:
CPU - Intel E8400 (Wolfdale)
RAM - Corsair XMS2 (model "TWIN2X2048-6400C4") I've heard there was issues with this, is why I turned the board on without ANY RAM. Yes, it would not have posted, but I would/should have gotten a signal on the D-Bracket!
PSU - Antec NeoHE (430W, 3 12V rails, +3.3V 22A; +5V 14A; +12V 16A / rail; -12V 0.8A; +5Vsb 2.5A)
The only thing I have left to do is to try it outside the case. However, I'm posting here now in case anyone sees anything obvious I missed. I actually HOPE it's something I can do here - even if it NEEDS a bios update, I would still expect the D-Bracket to give me all reds ("The System will hang here if the CPU is damaged or not installed properly.") However, I'm afraid to turn the board on without a CPU. (Is that safe? Dangerous? I was iffy about not having the RAM in..)

Eh, I'm hoping it's not the CPU. I can't verify if I get different options with the E8400 only because I get the same result (after updating to 1.5 and 1.6b3 BIOS revs as I had originally - everything powrs on, no D-LEDs (all off, NOT all red) and keyboard LEDs all on. So I don't even get the change to get into the BIOS to verify. :/ I'm sure that if I COULD, I could tweak the settings to at least get a stable system until I could use the processor at it's fullest, but.. as it is now, it's a nice lump of silicon.

I don't know, the best thing is probably to wait for a BIOS Update. Can you test you processor on another system that already supports Wolfdale CPUs?
I'm waiting. It's impressive - the P6N, even with the cheapest 1.6GHz Celeron processor is really nice. I won't have another LGA775 system to test with for another month. Hopefully, they'll have another beta or have released an update by then..

Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 RAM (using only 1 stick while troubleshooting)
MSI NX8600GTS GPU
OK, this is a strange one. I put my new system together and everything seemed to be working fine. POST looked OK, and I was even able to install Windows. Everything seemed stable.
One thing that troubled me was that the lights on the D-Bracket were all red AFTER POST. In other words everything was working, but the LEDs were showing CPU problem. I tried everything I could think of to get the lights to go away, but nothing worked. I disconnected all HDs, DVD, and floppy drives. I reset the BIOS, and reseated the CPU. I tried putting RAM in different slots, tried both sticks solo, but nothing made any difference.
It was getting late, so I decided to go to bed and run memtest86+ over night. When I got up this morning the system had powered itself down. When I turned it on again it powered itself off within a minute of being turned on. This was with all the drives hooked up, so I disconnected everything and now it's been sitting happily in the BIOS for over 30 minutes.
So at this point, it seems like it could be a power supply issue. Unfortunately, I don't have another PSU with an 8-pin CPU connector that I can try in this system. Any thoughts? Next steps to try?
Other possibly useful facts:
When I boot into the BIOS the D-Bracket lights show #3 green, and all others red, indicating "initializing keyboard controller". But when I boot past the BIOS to a CDROM or Windows, they show all red, indicating "CPU problem"
The system makes a brief chirp the POST screen. It doesn't sound like a beep code to me, and I've heard some boards will do an "everything's OK" beep like this. But it could be important so there it is.
Although it seems happier with all the drives disconnected (indicating a PSU problem), it still shows all red LEDs on the D-Bracket (indicating a CPU problem).
This is not the first system I've built, and I was fairly careful about putting everything together the right way. The only goof I know of is that at one point I was unplugging and re-plugging things and I ran the system for a while without connecting PCIE power to the GPU. Could that have broken something?
Any help would be much appreciated.
-SteveUPDATE: I tried hooking up my old 400W PSU with 20-pin ATX and 4-pin CPU connectors (apparently this is OK to do) but there was no change. Still four red LEDs.
I also tried removing the PCI-E GPU and booted it up with an antique PCI VGA card. Again, no change. Maybe I really did get a bad CPU?
Any other ideas, before I try to return my CPU?

Sometimes the computer boots ok, and everything works great.
Sometimes it just doesn’t boot, it just gives a blank screen. So, I press reset and the post gives the CMOS CHECKSUM BAD. F1 to setup F2 to default.
If I go to the setup everything is just like I left, including the time. Even if I setup the bios with default configuration, the problem continues.
Here is a list of everything I have tried
1) Replaced the battery 2 times. I checked with a multimeter. It’s 3V allright
2) Disconnected everything leaving only 1GB memory and the graphics card
3) Updated the bios version several times, to make sure I did it ok. I cleared the CMOS after allright
4) I read every post in this forum about bios and P6N SLI Platinum
5) Already checked the D-BRACKET. It shows 4 green leds when the screen is blank
6) Already checked fans: CPU and graphics fans works ok
7) Already tested with memtest86+ V2.01
8) Already upped the northbridge to 1.325V, CPU 3 notches and the memory another 3 notches.
So anyone has any ideas, or I’ll just have to go to a computer store and swap the graphics or the PSU and try to see if the problem vanishes??? It’s gonna be tough… they don’t like to let you test the merchandise….
PS: Thanks for all the help so far that you have been giving to TheGimp, after all, we have the same problem…I had the same problem after ~8months of trouble free service; it was intermittent too. sometimes it would boot fine, others times i'd get the error message. I removed the battery to test it. it was fine. i cleared the cmos with the button while the battery was removed. i noticed that the battery holder seems not to be anchored to the board at all. I haven't confirmed this but it looks like the protruding metal clip holds it all together. i had contacted MSI support about the problem earlier. they told me to clear the cmos. i asked about the battery holder not being secure on the board, and, as in the typical support response to an unusual question, they gave me some vague, undecipherable response. So, anyway when i put the battery back in, i felt the holder kind of click into place. I haven't had any problems since.

Core 2 Quad Q8400 Problem (P6N SLI Platinum) [FIXED]
Hello, I recently bought an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 with the understanding that my P6N SLI Platinum will support Yorkfield cores, given I have the latest BIOS. I updated my BIOS to 1.6, yet it just hangs on the MSI screen and will not POST. I just want to know if I indeed do have the latest BIOS, and if so, if there's anything I or MSI can do to remedy this problem. I really don't have enough money for a new mobo or CPU, and I'm going to be extremely irritated if I just wasted $170 on this... Thanks in advance.

if you searched a little on msi.com you would have ended up here:

here it says what CPU 's the board can run.
so MSI does say, what you can use, but it doesnt say on the box, cause it changes all the time, so they keep an online list.
and no, they cant write a new BIOS, its a chipset limitation from the NVIDIA chipset that cant be overcome by BIOS update unfortunatly.
I would go for a cheap P45 board, they can almost run all s775 CPU's and its newer then the P6N.
