Update Power Mac G3 from OS 9.2 to OSX 10.4?

Hello all,
So I just received an old Powermac G3 from a friend of mine running OS 9.2. I am trying to get the computer a little more up-to-date so that I can use the computer as a file server. When I went to put my 10.4 install disk in, it told me the disk was unreadable. After doing a little research I discovered that it might be possible that the firmware had not been updated. After a long struggle with trying to open the firmware update file, it tells me that the firmware is indeed up-to-date.
So the mission now (should you decide to accept it) is how to update this thing to 10.4 without any problems.
ANY IDEAS???
Thanks so much for your help guys,
David

    Hi,
My Adobe CS 4 ran perfectly find up until I updated my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE. When I launch illustrator CS4 I get a window message the reads   "some plug-ins in the additional Plug-ins folder are conflicting with application or user plug-ins. It will skip loading plug-ins from additional plug-ins folder."  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading process, then a second window will appear reading  "Error loading plug-ins.  PhotoshopImport.aip"  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading and launch.
The problem is when I open a current file that has a psd link I will get a window message reading  "could not find a plug-in to read the link file _______ choose repair to locate the missing file, replace to select another file, or ignore to leave the link unchange."   When selecting a psd link /file it is greyed out which I cannot select it.  I can not select, choose, import or open any files/links that is a psd.
Would someone please help me resolve this issue please!!!

  • Hi , is it possible to update de mac os from MAC OS X version 10.5.8 to lion?

Hi , is it possible to update de mac os from MAC OS X version 10.5.8 to lion? I need to use software screenflow and it is not possible right now. THANKS!!!!

Since you did give us any really details on the Mac you wish to upgrade, I'll give you the specs for Lion.
Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of RAM
Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later with the Mac App Store installed
At least 4GB of additional disk space to accommodate the download, but more is obviously recommended
Your posting in the Mac OS X v10.3 forum doesn't bode will in my opinion for your Mac making the grade though if that is true.

It's a pity you didn't keep a bootable clone of the drive.  The $100 in a backup drive  would have cost less than a replacement Leopard will.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • Restore power mac g5 from time machine

i have a power mac g5 that i'd upgraded to 10.5 leopard and backed up on my time capsule.
the hard drive died & i replaced it.
i reloaded the os from the only disk i could find - a 10.3 panther install disk.
unfortunately i don't think panther supports time machine.
how do i get to the time machine backup and restore to leopardly goodness?

nope, no others running 10.5 - i have an imac with yosemite, but nothing in between.
it's been a long time since i did them, were the upgrades to 10.4 and 10.5 diskless or am i likely to have install disks lying around somewhere?

  • Just Recived A Power Mac G3 From A Friend, Need Help

Ok so about a week ago I got a power mac g3 and wanted to hook it to a vga monitor but saw there was a different connection(15 pin), so I tried hooking it up to tv through composite video but that didn't work. Mostly my question is: How can I hook my power mac g3 to the tv if I do not have a monitor to set up mirroring. All responses are helpful!

    Hi, imac4567 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Assuming the graphics card in your B&W G3 is the original one, its connector is a D-sub-15 connector. Most VGA/SVGA monitors use a DB-15 connector.
This is discussed on page 22 of the user's manual for that model. You can download a PDF copy of it from here -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50122
    - it's the first item in the list, #034-0687.
If you need an adapter and did not get the one that originally came with that machine, you can probably get one from places like MacWarehouse, MacZone, or MacConnection.

  • Upgrading Power Mac G3 from OS 8.5

I have an old Power Mac G3 that I purchased in 1999 along with the Adobe Creative Suite that was available then. What do I need to do to upgrade, so that, I can use my AOL internet dial-up without errors that do not support certain websites that I would like to visit and have better performance.
Power Mac G3   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

I have never used AOL so I don't know what the interface is like. I believe many years ago you pretty much had to run what they provided but that has probably relaxed now. Perhaps Sha2sha can tell us how open the service is to using other software.
Sha2sha can probably do some upgrades that will facilitate running newer browsers, for example simply by doing the free upgrade to OS 8.6. Anything beyond that (e.g., installing OS 9) and you start to have to spend money and you have to decide whether it's time to just do a major jump.
There's lots and lots of discussions out there on pre-OSX browsers so I suggest, Sha2sha, that you read the forum on OS 9 usage for suggestions. What browser are you using now? I've tried a number of these. Some of these newer ones such as Netscape 7 are more modern and may give you added functionality (though I have found Netscape 7 to be very unhappy on my G3). By running the most modern browsers available for pre-OSX you can probably access most sites. Still, I found that when I needed to buy an airline ticket recently that I had to go to the library and use one of their computers because none of my browsers provided the features the website required. There's no solution to that other than running the newest browsers. You can get around it to some extent by having many browsers and trying them all on a particular website until you find one that works, but you will come across sites where no old browser will work and then you're stuck. I guess some people have had success with a browser called iCab which is still supported for OS9 (but I don't know about OS 8.5). I found it to crash too often for me to want to keep but others seem happy with it.
I am solidly in the old-mac OS9 school myself. If you're Mac savvy then you can find work-arounds for many of the OS9 limitations, but for about 2% of the things I need to do there's nothing except to use OSX, and that percentage will only increase.

  • Is it possible to update my mac mini from 10.5.8 to current?

    Hi,
I bought a mac mini years ago for my wife. I have updated it as far as it can go for the operating system that is on it now 10.5.8. My question is first can I upgrade to Mountain lion. I am not an tech savy individiual so any help would be awsome.

  • Upgrading a Power Mac from a PowerBook?

I'd like to upgrade my Power Mac from Panther to Tiger, and have recently purchased a PowerBook that came with Tiger (gray 10.4.2 discs). I gather from physically trying it, then searching this list, that the grey discs won't work. What I've not seen addressed is whether it's possible to get Tiger on the Power Mac directly from the PowerBook?
    Thanks.

Correct. The discs that come with a specific model are only usable on that model. You would have to purchase a retail version of Tiger on eBay or from FastMac.com or by calling AppleCare and ordering a copy (it may be several weeks delay.)
If you were to clone from your other computer you'd have the same problem. The installed version of Tiger from the gray discs also will not work on your other computer for the same reason the installer doesn't work.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up, Power Mac G5 Dual 2.5 freezes up

    Hello
I inherited a Dual 2.5 PPC Power Mac G5 from my sister. She was having problems with it suddenly freezing up. She replaced the hard drive but that didn't fix it, and sicne she had a newer Macbook Pro she gave up on it. When I got it I replaced the video card on it with an ATI Radeon, and it seemed to run fine for a while, and then the problem returned. It seemed to have returned after I did all the Apple software upgrades on it (It's running Leopard), but that might be a coincidence. I noticed under Diagnostics on the power up test that some RAM had failed. I also noticed that it was running on 1 gb of RAM even though 2 gb were installed. I removed the faulty Ram (4 256 mb dimms) and hoped that that was the problem. Unfortunately it wasn't. I also installed a temperture reading program. It showed that CPU A is running around 80 C at times and is usually about 10C hotter than CPU B. I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time and date, and took a look at the battery, and sure enough it was starting to leak (but hadn't leaked on to any components). I've ordered a new bttery for it.
I ran a check with Disk Utility and found the HD was ok, but permissions were a bit messed up. Disk Utility wasn't able to fix some of the permissions, but i don't think this is the underlying problem.
I've also opened it and gave everything a thourough vacuuming and cleaning and reseated any removable parts. I took the cover off the liquid cooling unit and vacuumed out the dust. There didn;t seem to be any coolant leaks I could see.
Any suggestions on where I should go from here? I unfortuantely don't have any of the disks for it, so I can't run the AHT until I find one for it (the one for my Macbook Pro wouldn't work).
Sometimes it just freezes. Other times it freezes and the computer fans go on high. It will finally get to a point where it shows the grey multi-language restart screen (where it says to hold down the button to shut it off and the restart).
It was frustrating because on my workbench it was running fine after I switched the video card, and it didn't freeze at all. When I moved it to our computer desk though, the problems returned. Tonight it was to the point where it didn't last 5 minutes.
    My thoughts are:
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad
    2. Maybe the dead battery is messing it up?
    3. When it is heating up with use, something is expanding and not connecting any longer.
    What are your thoughts?

    Hi Curtis,
I'm not sure though if 80C is normal for a G5 or not. I noticed that when it was unplugged that it wouldn't retain the time
Nope, not normal, way too hot, above 70°C... If you have any temps in the 70°C/160°F range, that's likely it.
Have you blown the dust out of everything with high pressure air?\
    1. Maybe All the RAM is bad

The original poster said they had a Mac mini, if the Mac mini is an old PowerPC based model then it cannot run Mac OS X 10.6. Both 'late' and 'early' 2006 models of the Mac mini had Intel processors and hence should be able to run Mac OS X 10.6.
All MacBooks have used Intel processors and hence all can run Mac OS X 10.6. No PowerBooks or iBooks can run Mac OS X 10.6.

  • RAM for 2003 Power Mac?

I am selling 2GB - (4) 512 MB DDR DIMM,P RAM for Power Mac G5 (2005) on ebay since I upgraded to more RAM. Someone asked me if this would work on their Power Mac G5 from 2003. I wasn't sure. Any advice? Thanks!

I would go to http://www.crucial.com/ and select the the specs for by model and processor speed to see if they match up with your ram. I am a PC Tech and I use this site frequently for max ammount ram, number of memory banks and so on. The ram Crucial sold me for my Dual Core G5 works rock solid so I trust thier research.
