Update Problem - Mysterious Locked File

My iPod photo won't update my pictures. When I click on update, this message will come up "The iPod "IPOD" cannot be updated. The required file is locked." Does anyone know what this "locked file" is?? Or does anyone know how to fix this?
I desperately need help.

If the file appears in HD/Library/Updates, then delete it and try updating again.
Recently, I installed third party software that trashed OS X 10.5.5 and I was forced to re-install the original OS X 10.5.2 (CD) as a fresh new install.
After the install, the software update OS X 10.5.5 Combo would not Validate. The download version in dmg format also failed verification.
I re-installed 10.5.2 again and ran into the exact same problems.
For the third time, I again installed the original 10.5.2, this time I used Disc Utility to check the drive, this found problems with permissions in this new fresh install and was duly repaired.
TechTool Deluxe (AppleCare Protection Plan) was then used to check that everything was indeed OK.
Screensaver was then turned off along with Energy Saver prior to the Software Update and a successful validated update to 10.5.5 resulted.
When updating the rest of the software everything updated properly except for the Java Update which would not validate.
I set Software Update to ignore the Java Update and again, used Disc Utility which again found permission problems that had to be repaired.
I then downloaded the dmg version of Java Update which installed without a hitch.
Software Updates appear to be Apple's achilles heel, but no worse than any other OS.
Unfortunately, the slightest glitch will compromise a software download or it's installation from any source, one has absolutely no control of this process except for pushing buttons.
The best download software I have used is Star Downloader, for Windows, this downloads from a number of servers simultaneously then re-assembles the separate downloads as one file. I have never had it fail.
I no longer use any of Microsoft's hardware or software, I am so happy with my iMac and Apple's efforts.
I will follow your post with interest.

  • Problem deleting locked files copied to my Time Capsule

I'm having difficulty deleting some locked files buried in nested directories that I copied to my Time Capsule. The usual procedure for recursively unlocking them using Get Info on the parent directory doesn't work because the lock icon in the bottom right corner of the get info window is absent regardless of whether I login as an admin or as root. After a couple of discussions with Apple Upper Level support, my options are to individually unlock each file (which will take forever with 350+ GB) or to reformat the disk and thereby lose the sparse bundle backups for my two Macs which I want to avoid. I can always write off those 350 GB and live with the remaining space, but I know there must be another way. Anyone have any ideas? I'm wondering if its possible to login as root and use a terminal window to mount the Time Capsule partition, change to the parent directories and recursively change the file permissions (chmod 777), and then recursively delete the files (rm -r). Apple support couldn't help me with this and it's been awhile since I've used unix, but if I can get a little help, I think this should work. Worse case scenario I end up reformatting the disk and lose my backups, assuming I don't blow away any files required to erase and reformat the disk. Any unix gurus out there that can help an old dweeb find his way? Thanks.

Thanks for the windows suggestion. I may be able to scare up an old Windows XP laptop but I'm not sure how I would connect the TC to it. Will windows recognize the TC via an Ethernet connection? Also, I think windows may be the original culprit as I ran across an old post with a similar issue:
"I copied folders + files from an old PC external hard drive onto my Time Capsule and now want to delete them (send them to the trash can). The files have been deleted but the empty folders remain with the following message: "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." Time Capsule does not show up on Disk Utility. There is only one user id on my computer (that's me) with read write & access. Get Info on the undeletable Folders does not indicate that they are locked. I suspect it may have something to do with legacy permissions from the old PC but Apple tells me these should be reset when the files are copied across."
I see the same error message and I'm certain there are lots of windows files buried in my directories.

  • Cannot open locked files using fingerprint on Tecra A11-17H

    Hello,
    I have a Toshiba Tecra A11-17H - PTSE0E 03402EFR
Operating system is Windows 7 64bit
    Here is my problem :
I locked files (image, text) with fingerprint, while I was running Windows XP Professional.
I copied my files without unlocked on external hard drive, then uninstalled XP and installed Windows 7.
After the reinstallation, the fingerprint reader has stopped working.
I had to download the drivers and software from the Toshiba website.
I then put my transferred to the external hard drive on the computer but now it is unable to open the file.
Extension has been changed (automatically), a fpl . came to added after the original extension .
I tried deleted fpl but nothing happens.
When I do right click, I do not have the option "unlock, but rather "to protect the file".
I understand (reading the forum) that fingerprint technology TPM consists of a chip containing a decryption key unique to the computer.
Theoretically, it would be possible to unlock my files, since it is the same computer ...
    Help me please ....

    Please read this:
[Cannot access fingerprint-protected files after recovery|http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9802O50000R01.htm]
    _Issue:_
A user cannot access his fingerprint protected files when backing up these files on external storage like e.g. a network drive and performing a recovery or reinstallation of the operating system on the machine where the files were protected.
    _Summary:_
The AuthenTec fingerprint software provides a feature called "protecting files/folders" which gives the user the ability to protect files regardless if stored locally, on external media (USB flash memory) or network storage with either a password or the stored fingerprints. After protecting the files, they cannot be moved/copied/deleted anymore until the user unprotects them.
The root cause of the above mentioned scenario is because of the fact that the "Authentec" fingerprint software is creating a connection between the installed fingerprint hardware and the filesystem on the HDD which acts like a key. This connection is removed after formatting or deleting the harddisk of the computer. Without this connection, the files cannot be accessed anymore and the user will not be able to unprotect them since there is no "key" which could unlock the file-protection.
    _Resolution:_
To prevent data loss caused by such scenario, *the user needs to unprotect the files before storing the files on external media* for backup/storage purposes and afterwards reinstalling the operating system.
Users should generally make sure to keep an accessible backup on an external storage media in case of data loss and data corruption.

  • Weird Locked Files issue

Hi I have a strange problem with locked files on OS X. Somehow I have ended up with 2 files on my desktop which I just can't get rid of.
They have a filesize of zero KB so I guess they are not proper files (they have the icon & name of two mp3s I have)
When I try and delete them I get a message saying they are in use by a program. I have tried rebooting, closing all running programs, still same issue.
If I do "get info" I can see that the file is locked, but then option to untick it is greyed out even after I unlock the padlock in the lower right corner.
I then looked on google for suggestions and tried deleting them with the terminal (using 'rm') and I get the message "Override for <filename>?" I say yes and then it says "Operation not permitted". I also tried this in single user mode and it said "Read only file system" and also didn't work.
I'm at a bit of a loss, does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of those two files?

Perhaps those files for some reason have system immutable flags on them. Try this: http://osxfaq.com/Tutorials/LearningCenter/AdvancedUnix/ugp2/page2.ws#sif
P.s.: Don't follow the part where he creates the file. Just follow the part where he deletes the file and make sure you replace the file name he specified with the file name that you saw on those files.

  • Sync problem: "The iPod cannot be updated. The required file is locked."

    Hi,
I upgraded to iTunes 7.0. First thing I did with it was to upgrade the firmware of the iPod to 1.2.1. The model is a MA079NF (20GB, iPod Photo, color screen), have used it problem free for about year now.
After that I wanted to sync my Library and a popup showed "The iPod "mypod" cannot be updated. The required file is locked." After clicking ok (only option) the syncing continues, but in the end the iPod contains 2174 files (~10GB out of 20GB free space), while my library holds 2187 checked files. Also none of my photos are copied to the iPod.
After that, upgrading iTunes to 7.0.1.8 did not help either. The problem is the same. Resetting the iPod to factory defaults and subsequent re-syncing did not help either, only helped me waste an hour .
The error message is silly, it leaves me only with questions:
Which file is locked, where is it locked (on my PC or on the iPod), in what way is it locked, why is it locked, by whom is it locked and how do I unlock it?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Best wishes,
    Henk.
    Dell Dimension 5150c   Windows XP

    Hi,
After the exceptional help of the Apple people (i.e. nothing, nada, zero, null, no reaction, silence and so on, and so forth) I decided to take matters in my own hands again. Using the superb FileMon tool of sysinternals.com I found out the syncing of my iPod stopped while traversing my photo cache.
The solution was simple: Remove the directory "\iPod Photo Cache" completely (I made a backup, of course).
After that, iTunes built the cache from scratch and syncing was working properly again.
<sarcasm> Apple, thanks again for all your support. </sarcasm>
    Best wishes nonetheless,

  • DW CS3 locked files and FTP issues - cannot update pages

I just upgraded to Dreamweaver CS3 and now cant seem to
update any of my web pages. I can connect to the server etc and see
my files locally & remotely but when I try check out a file to
update it I get an error message saying 'index.html is a locked
file and can be viewed but not changed'. All I can do with it is
view it. When I try to unlock any files locally nothing happens????
This was not an issue before I upgraded.....I have checked my
FTP details with a version on my pc and there are exactly the
same.....does anyone know is this an issue with mac version of
    Dreamweaver CS3?
    Help!!!

Can you post a link to your child or template page and tell
    us what you have
    changed that didn't propagate?
Here are seven common mistakes that will result in changes
    not propagating
    from Template to child -
    1. Rename the Templates folder
    2. Move the Templates folder to some other folder level in
    the site other
    than root level
    3. Move a template out of the Templates folder.
    4. Make changes to an editable region of the template (which
    will not
    propagate)
    5. Assume that template changes can be uploaded to the server
    without also
    uploading the changed local files
    6. Corrupt the site cache so that the link between template
    and child page
    is broken
7, Improperly create your child pages by simply opening the
    template,
adding page specific content, and resaving the template with
    an *.html
extension rather that its *.dwt extension. (you can tell if
    this is the case
by looking at the code on a child page - if you see anything
    like <!--
TemplateBeginEditable... then this is what you have done). If
    you *have
done this*, then recreate the child pages (in DWCS3) using
    FILE | New > Page
from Template, select the template and click CREATE.
The 6th problem can be repaired by using SITE | Advanced >
    Recreate Site
Cache, and the six others can be fixed by just not doing
    them. Have you
    done any of those?
    Or, read this -

  • Vista problem with  Dreamweaver locking files indiscriminately - I'm not alone

I've seen questions posed in the past about Vista locking files - and I am having the exact same problem, which I posted about a while ago.  Today it happened to me again.
There appears to be no pattern as to why this happens.  Was happening to me continually until a few weeks ago. Then it stopped without me taking any course of action (just putting up with the annoying bug is all I could do).
You just have to remember to save the file under a different name to ensure that you don't lose your original file.  The original file does not appear in the File Manager window (after you close down DW, nor does it appear in the Trash bin - it's just gone).
Initially I thought it may be due to having the file open, checking it in Firefox and possibly FF taking over the file, so it gets locked by DW.  Today, I only opened the file (no checking in a browser at all) made a minor correction and I was locked out of the file.
Co-incidentally, a few hours ago, I found a website via twitter where this seems to be a known issue, but no there appears to be no response from Adobe about this bug.   http://www.sherylcanter.com/wordpress/2009/05/locked-vanishing-files-in-dreamweaver-and-in design/
Previously, I used to restart the pc and I'd lose the file altogether (as explained above).  After reading the above website, I'm going to leave DW open for a while to see if it's true about the file 'unlocking itself'.  Thankfully,, this time, I did backup the file just in case.  In the past I'd lost a fair amount of work, that I'd had to recreate - very annoying !!
I thought I'd post up a graphic of the error messages - to see if others are seeing the same thing. This will need to be bought to the attention of the DW tech team, but not sure how they can address the issue as it is a difficult thing to reproduce on a consistent basis.
AN UPDATE;  Checked for the file in Windows File manager - the index.html page is not listed in the sitefolder.  Back to Dreamweaver, you can still see the locked file, do a refresh and the index.html file has disappeared.
I open index2.html (the resaved version of index, html), rename it to index.html and it allows me to do so this time round.
PS:  At the same time I opened inner.html, made a change, no problems with the file locking.
    Weird !!
    Further update:
Just found a reply by David Powers here:  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/437034?tstart=30
I had tried to do a search using similar keywords when this started happening to me months ago - couldn't find anything at the time.
I even posted to a private forum where people should have known about this issue - but it was never responded to.
Will see if this fix works for me....  though I can't understand why it only does this occasionally - if someone needs to take control of the folder, surely it should be happening all the time.

    Nadia,
Although Dreamweaver "reveals" and demonstrates it, I think that it's a deep-seated Vista permissions issue.
It's random and occurs on files I create from scratch and files I receive from others.
Full permissions for every single user and group on my PC doesn't work.
"Take ownership" by my account or Administrator or Administrators or System or Everyone or Authenticated Users doesn't work.
    UAC deactivation doesn't work.
Command prompt to unset attributes (like read-only) says it ISN'T read-only, but the right-click properties show that it is.
    Only this works so far.
Activate Vista's Administrator account (be sure to then set a password for it).
Log in as Administrator, and the issue no longer occurs.
Here's a link for instructions on how to activate the Vista Administrator account.
Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows Vista [The How-To Geek]
I'm open and hopeful for a better solution, but for now I've got work to do, so I'm using Dreamweaver logged in as Administrator.

  • Locked file problem with WebDAV

I am using DreamWeaver CS3 on my Macintosh at home and on a
PC at work. I am connecting to my website via WebDAV, and for some
reason Dreamweaver cannot edit the files on the site. When I try to
check out any file I get an error stating: "file.html is locked and
can be viewed but not edited" I then have the option to check it
out or view or cancel. Regardless of what I do, if I continue and
open the file and make changes the file will not get updated on the
remote server even though Dreamweaver reports a successful "put" or
"check in" command in the log file. This happens on both the
Macintosh and the Windows PC. Both are also updated to the latest
    versions of Dreamweaver.
The strange thing is, if I mount the WebDAV server as a
filesystem on my macintosh and authenticate with the same
login/password that entered in Dreamweaver's WebDAV settings, I can
edit the html files using a text editor and they save perfectly
fine. Additionally, while the web server is mounted on the desktop,
if I change Dreamweaver's site settings to "local/network" and
enter the locally mounted WebDAV share path instead of using
Dreamweaver's built-in WebDAV client, then everything works
properly in Dreamweaver. Reverting back to using WebDAV in
dreamweaver (as opposed to through the OS) brings about the same
    "locked file" problem as before.
There appears to be a problem with Dreamweaver's WebDAV
access to the site, and I'm wondering if there's an easy fix or if
this has been experienced by others?
    Thanks,
    -Topher

Have a look at FileUtils::DecomposeUnicode and NormalizeUnComposedUnicodeChars. Use the first to convert before using i.e. FileUtils::PMStringToSysFile() and the later afetr i.e. FileUtils::IDFileToPMString().

I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them or get them out of my trash and they keep multiplying. And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities.  If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that,  and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running.  if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way
    good luck

  • IPhoto update problem accessing files

I installed the iLife 06 on my computer today, and when I launch iPhoto, it prompts me to upgrade. When I do so, it runs its course loading photos, but at the end, I get the following dialogue:
"There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto Library folder. In the Finder select the iPhoto Library folder. Then Choose File> Get Info. Make sure you have read and write permissions for the folder and then apply this setting to all inclosed items."
So...I did as was suggested, and the Library folder and the folders it contained SEEM to have read and write permissions. Do I have to open each of THOSE folders and check within them too (YIKES!), or am overlooking some basic thing I need to do.
Your help is appreciated. Thanks! --Kari

    Hi Karl,
Wow, I can't believe how many people have had the same problem. You will find many threads here dealing with it but here is the jist of it.
" Unable to upgrade this library because the current user does not have access"
-First make sure your Pictures folder has the correct permissions for you, the user. Do this by highlightling the Pictures folder, hit Command i to bring up the info pane.
Make sure you are the owner and have read and write permissions. Click the button at the bottom of the window.
-If your problem is a locked file/files follow the info in the following Apple kb
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303232
If all this fails you might want to try BatCHmode.

I have a problem with my ipod nano silver 4go, when i try to update my firmware, this message apears: "the ipod could not be updated because the firmware file could not be found" does someone know about this problem? Please excuse my english

Hey, i tried this, twicebut after iTunes downloaded the update, it still says "firmware file is corrupt" even after i have deleted the folder. Im on a windows operating system (my friends - GO MACS!!) and it wont work. Im trying to fix this for my friend, i was considering just formatting itto FAT32 with the explorer thingy. but that might make iTunes not recognize it. Any advice would be benificial!!

I had the same problem. I had to uninstall 7.0 and install 6.0 and was able to restore OK. I'm back using 6.0, but just got a second generation ipod nano, so I have to go to 7.0 or greater. My only words of wisdom are DO NOT SET ANY LOCKS until you are really sure you want to. Also with 7.0 I could not eject my ipod unless I went to the "safe to eject ipod" command. Apple has some problems to work out and I hope soon. Clumsy as best...............

  • Help with delete duplicate locked files

I'm kinda new at this so forgive me if I'm a bonehead.
I made a contribute site, then wanted to disable check in
check out. All the files have duplicate locked files remaining on
server and they take eons to ftp. Is there an easy way to delete
them all? I delete on server and they mysteriously are still there
the next time I reupload files...I first thought it was a DWMX ftp
problem, but same deal with GoLive.
    Yipes! Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
I have very limited experience with Automator, but my guess is it's not up to the task. I'm trying to do something similar in iTunes but the actions under Finder don't seem to work properly. ( If you select 'Find Finder Items' and set the Whose field to Extension and Is Equal To and use the parameter 'mp3' it seems to work as expected. If you set the Whose field to Name and Ends with it only returns directories.) I'm thinking I need to look into actual scripting. Anyone have thoughts on this?

  • InDesign lock files, read only permissions...

I've had this strange problem for over a year now, unsure as to why it was happening. Now I've realized what the problem is, but I don't know how to fix it.
We build ads in InDesign. Production, who builds the ads, has basically full control to the ads network drive. Sales, on the other hand, has only read access. They want to print ads out on occasion, but I don't want them to be able to screw the ad up by mistake (they know just enough to get the ad to print).
    Here's the problem...
Someone one sales opens an ad. Well, they don't have create or write permissions (Win 2003 server, XP workstations). So the InDesign lock file is never created. But they do obtain a read lock on the file on a Windows/OS level.
So what happens is, the production staff opens the ad while the sales person opens the ad. There's no lock file, so the production person isn't warned that the file is open. But because there's an OS lock on the ad, the ad opens for the production staff, but it opens as read only.
My first problem is that I don't know how to fix this without giving our sales people full access, which I cannot do. The second problem is that any app that happens to access those files (shadow copy perhaps???) will cause the same headache for the production staff, as there is contention to the file.
So I'm in a catch-22 here. I'm wondering if any of you have been in the same boat and know if there is a work around.
We're using InDesign 3 (CS) on XP.

Or export to PDF every time the ad is updated, and only give them access to the PDFs through Reader - keep them away from InDesign completely. If you are only giving them InDesign to view ads, you could save money on unnecessary InDesign licenses.

  • Version Cue Server 4.0.1 Update Problems

I've recently run into a problem with Version Cue Server 4.0.1. I've been using "Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Master Collection" without any problems until a couple of days ago when I ran the updates.
The updates locked up and failed on Version Cue, and after that, every time I right click on my desktop or in Windows Explorer, I get the error message:
"The specified module could not be found. C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\4.0.1\VersionCue.DLL"
    Then everything crashes and reloads.
I called tech support and they said to reboot in a simplified mode, create a new administrator account, and reinstall version cue. Didn't work. I tried reinstalling both from the CD and from the downloaded update. Same problem. The installation goes most of the way and then fails.
I uninstalled Master Suite and was able to right-click again without problems, so I went back to a simplified boot and tried re-installing the software...which crashed my computer and caused the same right-click error message.
As I said earlier, everything worked fine right up until the point I ran the updates, so I know the software will run on my computer (Vista 32bit service pack 1).
    Thoughts?

    All,
I personally have been driving this issue at Adobe. As mentioned before, we've been hindered by the fact that we cannot yet reproduce the problem on a machine in our offices. But I've been doing all that I can to coordinate between customers and Senior Computer Scientists who are investigating this.
Here's the new information that has been learned by remotely debugging on customer's machines (great thanks to those who have made time for this!).
The problem is isolated to the binary patching function in our update components. This means updates that modify the files on your current system are impacted. Updates that simply replace the existing files with all new versions of the files, are not affected. While I don't have a complete list of which update uses which method, I can say that the recently released Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 updates use a full file replacement method, so they should be no risk.
It was earlier believed that this problem only happened in the context of the Adobe_Updater.exe, which downloads the updates and runs them in with UI suppressed. This is now known not to be true, so "manual" running of the updates is not a valid workaround (sorry for those who spent time trying this).
There is some suspicions that the issue has to do with the temp folder being used by the updater. I've tested a private build with a change in this area on a couple customer machines, and got more elegant failures (didn't cause apps to stop working), but still no success
    Lourens Van Der Jagt,
I found your observation about the "FAST IO DISALLOWED" messages to be very interesting, and forwarded that, along with results of my recent tests of the private build, to the devs.
One other thing that I found on the Vista machines I've looked at, which I'm curious about. On all machines I've looked at, the NTFS junction (looks like a shortcut) named "Program Data" in the root of the user folder is visible, while all other junctions are not. And, the junction can be browsed. All other Vista systems I've ever seen do not display this unless protected system files are asked to be displayed, and then they cannot be browsed.
I want you all to know that I have been working hard to represent you and get a resolution for this. I appreciate the hardship it presents to you, and I take it very seriously. Please keep the dialog going, and I'll try to keep updating here and in other threads as much as I can.
    Sincerely,
    Matt
