Update Quicktime fixed Safari!

If you have been pulling your hair as I have because Quicktime files no longer play within Safari ... all you get is s QT symbol with a question mark, or a "loading window that never loads" ... Mac users check "Software Update". There should be a new QT update -- that fixed it for me. I also updated iTunes at the same time, so there is a remote chance that was the culpret, but 'think not. Window's users, I don't know how you update, but I'd look for a newer version of Quicktime.
Another contributor mentioned calling Apple and they promised a "fix". Wow, that was quick. Hope this helps. BTW ... my problem started after updating Flip-4-Mac.

My apologies. I do not use Safari 3 Public Beta, nor Windows. In my haste I posted to the wrong discussion. But if it helps ...

  • Updated Quicktime...now Mail won't open

I updated quicktime yesterday and immedately afterwards Mail would not open anymore. It just bounces (usually just once) and then nothing. Anyone know how to fix this or how to revert to the previous version of quicktime?

Actually, I have it on very good authority (Apple
person) that you can install the combo 10.4.6 update
and it will not step on SecUpd 2006-003 components
I cannot believe this. The Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update would certainly overwrite files installed by the Security Update 2006-003 (e.g. Safari). Could this be a misunderstanding? The Security Update 2006-003 does not touch anything in the Mail.app bundle, could this be what that person really meant? I'm pretty sure reinstalling the Security Update 2006-003 is necessary if the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update is reinstalled on a system where the Security Update 2006-003 had already been installed.
Also, I don't think that the Combo will alter the QT status.
EDITED: I agree with you on this, but I'm not sure, so I thought it would be appropriate to be on the safe side and take that possibility into consideration.
I suspect it is the Mail program that got damaged
I don't think so. According to the Console error messages, Mail crashes right upon start up because there is something amiss in /System/Library/Frameworks/.
Not sure QT re-install is needed.
It could very well be that properly reinstalling the QuickTime update fixes whatever went awry in /System/Library/Frameworks/ during the first attempt. If not, then reinstalling the Combo Update will be necessary, indeed.
I'll try installing the QuickTime update myself tomorrow (today here :-)) to see what happens.
    Regards.

  • Itunes has stopped working. This comes up everytime I launch ITUNES.  I've uninstalled, reinstalled, removed support programs reinstalled support programs, created different user and problem still persists.  Quicktime and Safari launch fine.  Just itunes.

Itunes isn't working properly.  I get this message every time I try and open Itunes.  I've uninstalled, reinstalled itunes and all the support programs.  Quicktime and Safari launch fine. Tried it with Nortons antivirus turned on and turned off etc.   I've gone through the Apple Support file and removed the itunes preference files, I've started in safe mode and it still persists.  This only started about a week ago when I changed over to my Iphone 4s.  My phone loaded fine and backed up etc and now NOTHING....

I had a similar error, but relating to a different .dll file and on 32-bit Win7.  I think I isolated the problem to Norton Internet Security 2012 v 18.6.0.29 - iTunes would start fine with NAV Antivirus Auto-Protect disabled but crashed if Auto-Protect was on.  I tried running iTunes as administrator (right click on the icon and select "Run as Administrator"; to make this permanent right click on the icon > Properties > On the Shortcut tab, click Advanced > tick Run as Administrator) and iTunes now runs fine.  Maybe give that a try?

  • Unable to update QuickTime, won't install update, can't uninstall - HELP!

Firefox (20.0.1) say need to update QuickTime. Properties show current version 7.6.4. Update button takes to download 7.7.3. It downloads ok, but will not install, says newer version already installed. Didn't find newer update than 7.7.3. Tried to uninstall QuickTime, says have more current version, need uninstall newer first. Tried Windows Vista help, looked through Community questions, still unable to find resolution. Supposed newer version not show in Programs, only updates can find are Windows. Not tech savvy enough to go further without guidance. If no fix available, suggestion for alternate program that does same job would be very welcome!

I ran the Microsoft Fix-It Tool located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2438651, as referenced by Dianne 13, and it worked PERFECTLY!
An update to QuickTime would not install on my PC; I kept getting a message that it "ecountered an error". I tried installing the update manually; I was told a newer version was already installed, and the installation could not be completed. QuickTime wouldn't even open; I got the same message about a newer version, so I tried running the uninstaller, both from the Start Menu shortcut and from within Control Panel - neither worked. The uninstaller told me it encountered an error & couldn't continue.
I ran the Microsoft Fix-It tool that Dianne 13 posted the link to, and it uninstalled QuickTime without any problem whatsoever, and the new version of QuickTime was able to then install.

  • Can't Update QuickTime and iPhoto

When attempting to download and install the latest version of QuickTime and iPhoto via Software Update, I got the error message, "None of the checked updates could be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges." I have two User Accounts on this Mac, both are Admin accounts, and I've tried updating from both accounts. I've repaired privileges via Disk Utility. Why can't I download these updates?

Same issue with the QT 7.3 update, I get this message...
The update “QuickTime” can’t be saved.
You do not have appropriate access privileges.
The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder.
Tried repairing permissions with disk utility, it ran with a few warnings and 3 unexpected ACLs on the private/var/root dirs, but that did not help.
Had keychain problems when I did the Leopard upgrade, had to reset the root password to fix. Wondering if the problematic Leopard upgrade did some other damage?

  • Update quicktime fail

    Hi,
I have a problem when updating quicktime 7. in 7.6.6, the lastest one. It stops at 98% of the installation and it says that it failed. So now I can't use skype and neither itunes because they requiered at list quicktime 7.5version to work.
So I tryied to download from apple store itune 7.6.6version and instal it from my desktop, but same problem...How can i fix that? help please.

OK, I'm back up and running.
Another thread had some information from bigman13 that provided a solution. It appears that most (not all) of the people having this problem had also installed Java6 beta. If you are one of those people, here is a solution that might help you. Caution - this involves performing steps from a command shell.
I think you must have a root account enabled to do this. If you don't and wish to enable it, select the "Help | Mac Help" menu item from your desktop screen and type in "root account". Select the "Enabling the root user" entry and follow those instructions.
    Steps to fix the problem:
    1) Open a Terminal window and type...
    2) su -
    3) cd /Library/Receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg/Contents
    4) lsbom -s -f Archive.bom > /tmp/files
    5) Now edit the /tmp/files file with a text editor and replace " " with "\ " and all "./" with "rm /" - Resave the file
    6) From the terminal again: sudo bash /tmp/files
    7) rm -r /Library/Receipts/JavaSE6Release1.pkg
    8) sudo update_prebinding
    9) I rebooted my Mac
    10) Test that Word runs again - Mine Did!
    11) I then reinstalled Java6
    Hope this helps

  • Can updated quicktime screw up iMovie transfer?

Last week I shared an iMovie to quicktime and it played smooth and fine. I updated my quicktime to 7.1.5, made two small changes to the iMovie and shared it to quicktime again. After the update the video is choppy and of poor quality. Did updating quicktime cause the loss of quality? Can I uninstall and put back the previous version of QT?
    Thanks,
    Kurt

I rebuilt the desktop with DiskWarrior (the newest non intel version), downloaded qt 7.1.6 to fix the bugs, resent the movie to quicktime:
STILL CHOPPY, STILL PIXELATED. I shouldn't have updated to 7.1.5.
I don't have my copy of the first qt movie until Monday, I'll check out the two versions.
SOMETHING NEW: IDVD preview panes (like next to play movie, or scene selection) are choppier and more pixelated since the update.
Please e-mail any friends you have at apple and tell them the above update for qt decreases the quality of IMOVIE transfers to CD-Rom, Quicktime movies. The ones you are most likely to use and burn for friends and family. It may also screw up some IDVD features.
    E-mail like the very wind.
    Thanks.

  • Updating Quicktime to new version

I've tried updating Quicktime to the new version but it will not update, I've tried following the removal tips, but the add/remove function cannot remove it I get the following reply "The Installer encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package error 2330." I've tried looking it up both in the forums and the troubleshooting guide but have had no luck finding it or finding a way to move past this problem to update the software, has anyone come across this problem and know how to move forward from it?

Sometimes it can indicate trouble with the entire QuickTime program files folder.
I'd try running a chkdsk over your C drive. There's instructions for that in the following document. Either select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you choose to go about it). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the scan to run on restart:
[How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265]
The scan should take quite a long time. If it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something is interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get the install to go through properly now?

  • Never updating Quicktime AGAIN!

This is less a question and more of a rant.
I had this problem last time when I upgraded from 7.0.4 to 7.1.3. I got the annoying broken quicktime logo showing up in Apple/trailers and anywhere else that played Quicktime.
I couldn't get rid of the **** software, so I had the unenviable task of completely re-installing my OS X 4 software just to get rid of one measly program. You can already guess, this is not fun.
After that I swore I would not update Quicktime, but last night something came up where I needed to update and I thought since Quicktime was already at 7.1.5 maybe the problem with 7.1.3 was resolved, and it was.... in a not really at all kinda way, only now the problems are even MORE SUPER (<---sarcasm)
Now all my quicktime movies, most importantly, works I've exported out of Flash that I use in After Effects won't show up. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
I can't tell you how much fun that is. And did I mention the files are for my graduating thesis film? No? Well now I have.
Whatever vulnerabilities 7.1.5 is supposed to fix they are not nearly worth the trouble its created just by being installed.
So if you'll excuse me, I'll be backing up all my important files and software and preparing for a long tedious re-install of OS X 4, and then afterwards a long software update from Apple(sans Quicktime of course) and then re-installing all my extraneous software.
This is sooooo how I wanted to spend my Sunday.
    Quicktime, I'M DONE!
    Rant over.

    Smart aleck!
I think I will adopt your policy in the future, I used to be like that myself, but there just was never a problem..until now. I was also under the impression that an Apple employee would have glanced at the forums, or at least read the feedback, I know I left some under the OS X tab.

  • Can't update QuickTime - 1402 on HKEY_LOCAL... \QuickTimePreferences

I need to update QuickTime and Itunes but keep getting an error on installing the QuickTime 7 "1402 error: could not open key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\QuickTimePreferences.
I've tried to use REGEDIT to edit the permissions on the quicktime keys but that doesn't work. I get a message telling me I can't open the key or change permissions. Also, all user accounts on this PC are setup as administrator and I've tried to edit these keys from multiple accounts. All attempts generate the same error.
Also, if I just go to the Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs and try to remove Quicktime, I get the same 1402 error, followed by a 1603 error.
I've already spent 3 evenings on this. I've read the advice, but it doesn't seem to work for me.
Now I have to get this fixed. My old IPOD died and the new one won't run on the older version of Itunes.
    Pls help.

Also, all user accounts on this PC are setup as administrator and I've tried to edit these keys from multiple accounts. All attempts generate the same error.+
That sounds like there's a problem with the access control lists on those keys.
Somewhat experimental advice in this context (I usually give it in cases where there's a recalcitrant 1402-like problem with CLSID keys on a QuickTime install) ... but it may be worth trying the procedure from the following weblog:
Aaron Stebner's WebLog: Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions
(I've seen it fix permissions before in cases where the permissions couldn't be touched using regedit, which is why I'm thinking it may be worth a crack with your problem.)

  • Quicktime and Safari

    Hi,
After updating Quicktime (Pro) to 7.0.4 both Safari and Firefox have stopped loading quicktime content in web pages.
For example, when I view trailers on Apple Trailers, the quicktime Q appears and then a question mark is imposed on top of it.
Elsewhere on these forums it was suggested that I remove the file "QuickTime Plugin.webplugin" from the library. I tried this, and no change. Still the question mark.
I have also checked plugin settings in System Prefs and Safari. All seem to be in order, with the correct file extensions flagged for quicktime, and plugins enabled in Safari.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
Sorry I can offer you no help. I'm having the same problem. Although not with all pages that use Quicktime. I'm able to view the trailers from it's own website, but with not with most other pages elsewhere.
Hopefully someone can help us out. Thanks for posting the question, I thought I had done someting wrong in updating or something.

  • Does 2.1 fix Safari?

I know this is the iPhone 3G forum. I also know many users here have iPods too.
I can't find the answer so far in the iPod sections, so, for those with an iTouch, does the 2.1 update fix Safari's tendency to crash when accessing a large web page (for instance, the 3G reception, You Are Not Alone thread)?

Yeah, it doesn't fix it. I find that it's most forums that crash safari (here and howardforums, long threads). I found turning off javascript seems to help, but it just might be a coincidence.

  • Missing iCal calenders after updating Quicktime and iTunes

I updated Quicktime and iTunes yesterday and when I tried to open my calenders in iCal this morning there was nothing !

    Hi Mylenium:
Just as an additional info, when I stated "Apple Forum" I was referring to a suggestion made and publish there by one of the Apple Support guys.
Thanks for your suggestions. As I stated before, I put the DLL back to the "original" folder, re-started the sytems but I am still getting the AE error regarding a "missing entry on the SQLite3.dll".
After putting back such file to the original folder now I am getting the "same inital error" I got after the update ONLY in iTunes. I have not dare to move anything with my iPod yet. I do not want the whole thing to become worst that already is.
In regards to your nest suggestion  "...Another thing I can think of is that you might actually need to unregister the DLL via regsrv, then re-register it somehow to re-establish the proper hooks. Still, quite odd....."..
I wonder if you cand provide me with the necessary steps to attempt this. I have no experience working/fixing DLL's.
    Thanks and regards,

  • Does OS X NTP Security Update "POODLE-proof" Safari?

I've installed OS X NTP Security Update v1.0 (on Dec 22, 2014) and Safari v7.1.2 update (on Dec 14, 2014), but Safari is still showing up as vulnerable via the following check tool: https://zmap.io/sslv3/
If these updates aren't intended to resolve the POODLE vulnerability, is there a different remediation tool to POODLE-proof and fix Safari? Based on the remediation guide via the above zmap.io link, it would seem that installing these latest security updates *SHOULD* have remediated the browser but that is not what I'm seeing. In comparison, Firefox 34.0.5 is remediated and I was able to manually remediate Chrome with the zmap.io remediation guide.
    My technical specifications:
    OS X Version 10.9.5 (13F34)
Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Safari Version 7.1.2 (9537.85.11.5)

Thanks for the reply... based on my reading, prevention is suggested both server *AND* client side. Most descriptions of the SSLv3 bug include remediation specifically for client browsers as well as servers.
For example, here's the remediation suggestion from MS, see the suggested action section:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/3009008.aspx
On this reference, there are step by step config guides for client browsers with the exception of Safari which should be covered by recent security updates. In my case, the updates don't appear to be working.
