Update(s) break ability to connect to bank web site(s)

One of the recent updates to 10.7.3 - either a security update or the Java update - has broken the ability to connect to certain bank web sites from ANY browser, including Internet Explorer running under Parallels.  The latter makes me suspect that something in the hidden antivirus technology is blocking certain internet communication.  Disabling the firewall makes no difference - and the sites will not appear with Safari (32 bit or 64 bit mode), Chrome or Firefox any longer.
The site we're running into problems with is:  http://www.ourbank.com
But, in this thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3801713
and others on the internet, people are reporting issues with First Bank, Bank of America and others as well.
I initially responded to a similar thread in the Safari forum - but determined this has nothing to do with Safari / Webkit as it affects all ocmmunication on the Mac to the sites in question.  (Even ping fails.)
On my same network, a standalone XP machine with IE 8 connects instantly, as does an iPad (IOS 5.1).  So, it is not a DNS issue or a network issue. It is only the Macs after the last round of Software Updates.
Out of ideas as to what to do to get access back on our Macs ...
Ideas?
Thanks,
Karl

Well, I think I have finally come up with a solution. It seems this issue happens when it auto locks. I turned auto lock to "never" in settings, and the issue has not happened since. Seems there may be a bug in this feature???
I now use manual lock, and upon awakening the wifi is now fully working.

  • I can't connect to a web site via the site's own WiFi.

This is a strange one. When I'm in the New York Public Library and connected to the internet via their WiFi I can connect to any web site EXCEPT the New York Public Library's! (www.nypl.org) It tries connecting then times out every time. I can connect to the NYPL's site when I'm not there from home or other WiFis public or private, and when there I can connect to it on my iPhone, but not from my computer with either Firefox or Safari. Other people with Macs can access the site from there and I went over my settings with one of them but could find no differences.
I'm using 10.5.7 and have the latest updates for Firefox and Safari and the latest updates for OSX. What's frustrating is that when I'm at the library doing research there are databases one can only access from there, not from outside, so it's a very odd situation. Using iPhone for such a reason is quite impractical, too so I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. I'm sure it's a setting somewhere in my network prefs or something but I'm baffled as to what it might be - has anyone else ever run across something similar?
    Thank you!

I am hear at the New York Public Library now. I am connected to the internet on their WiFi but still cannot get to their site at the address http://www.nypl.org , it times out. I pinged them with this result:

  • Can't open bank web site

I tried to open bank web site but it gave me this massage
''Safari can’t open the page “http://www.sabb.com/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding'' .
I was able to open this site before, I can't remember what I have change.
I change Safari Security to accept cookies always and firewall to allow all incoming connection but no use........ Any suggestion????

Some banks are notoriously uncaring and lazy about what systems and browsers they support.

As it says in this document:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/safari/
"Safari complies with standards, but not all browsers do. This article explains how to design, modify and validate your website so that it can be rendered and read properly by all major browsers."
The bank/s need to read this:
"Safari is one of the most standards-compliant browsers ever built. Thus, your best bet for ensuring your pages render properly in Safari — today’s version and beyond — is to follow web standards. For a great overview of web standards, check out Mozilla.org’s article Using Web Standards in Your Web Pages."

I'm able to view statements in all of our other bank web sites.

One option might be to change the way PDFs are opened from opening in a tab to launching outside the browser in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. To change this setting:
    Tools menu > Options > Applications<br>
(''If necessary, tap the Alt key to display the classic menu bar so you can access the Tools menu'')
In the search box, type '''pdf''' and pause while Firefox filters the list. Use the drop-down on the right to change the action, for example, to Always Ask which presents the Open/Save/Cancel dialog.

  • My wife and I share our Mac OS 10.6.8 since downloading Skype on her account she can not stay connected to any web site she pulls up. I removed Skype from here account but it stll happens. What can I do to clear this up?

My wife and I share the same Mac OS 10.6.8 and since downloading Skype on her accout she came not asty connected to any web site for more than a few seconds. I have remove Skype from her account but not mine. I don't have the problem on my accout and I still have Skype loaded. How can I fix this problem?

O.k. Thanks for the clarification. I poked around in my TimeCapsule router's settings (TimeCapsule is an Apple Airport Extreme router with attached hard drive for wireless backup/storage). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can disable multicasting with the TimeCapsule. I can change the multicasting 'rate'. Settings are Low, Medium, High. It's currently set to Low.
I did a few web searches, and found an Apple.com article: <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US> which explained how to disable Bonjour Service Advertisements. I believe this is the same thing as 'Multicasting'. The process is a modification of "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist", and a restart of the Mac is required afterwards.
I'm a bit concerned that disabling multicasting will interfere with my AppleTVs and iTunes music sharing, but I may try it next time I'm up for a computer workout. This task will require editing of system preference files, could require multiple restarts, might interfere with my AppleTVs, could interfere with my iTunes file sharing, doesn't have a documented relationship to my problem.
This is way to difficult for something that should just work. Did you say you had read something about a relationship between this bonjour multicasting and smb connectivity? If it was online could you post the link?
I'm currently able to connect to the drive using NFS, but I have to manually configure that connection each time I reboot (can't get the 'Disk Utility' configured to do it automatically). While it's working with NFS, it's not my preferred connect method (for various reasons).

  • Why do I sometimes get connected to different web site than link specified and if I go BACK and try again, it works correctly?

This happens infrequently, but sometimes I get connected to a web site that has a Trojan. If I go back and try it again, I get the correct site. I know this happens from the Yahoo site, but it also happens from other sites.

Incorrectly configured server. i.e. missing intermediate chain certificate. IE can download automatically, but Mozilla can't, hence the cert error. As far as why it randomly decides it is valid sometimes prior to you try to add a security exception I don't know.

  • Can't reach bank web sites

I have a mystery that no one seems able to solve. I am running 10.9.5 on a 2013 MacBookAir. I have an Apple Express network that is also used by an 2011 iMac 21, also running 10.9.5. All software, including Safari, is up to date.
I have done banking on line for several years. About a month ago, I suddenly could not connect to my bank's web site home page, and thus not to the log-in portal. Neither could the iMac. However, both could log in to every other web site. First thought was that the bank site was down. I tried several times over the course of a couple of days, but no luck. I called the bank, which said their site was up.
Was the problem with my computer or my network? To find out, I took the MacBook to my office. There it could connect to the bank site, as could my office 2012 iMac 27. After searching around the bank site, I found a technical note detailing what plug-ins and other settings were required. I checked them all on the MacBook and the 27 to make sure they were the same, including updating Java to latest Mac version. I also updated the DNS server list to make sure the MacBook was running the same as the 27 (OpenDNS).
I brought the Air back home, same lack of connection. I poked around in the wireless network list and found an unsecured network in the neighborhood. I switched to that and was able to connect; ditto with the iMac. When I switched back to my own network, no connection. I called the bank's technical support line, but IT doesn't talk to bank customers.
Everything pointed to something being wrong in my network. So I decided to re-set the Express and create a new network with a different name and password. I had high hopes for a solution. Not so. Still no connection to this one web site.  After a few days, another bank’s web site fell victim to the same problem.
After purchasing a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet connector for $30, I was able to bypass the wireless network and plug in the Ethernet cable. Both web sites opened as they should.
The problem must be in the Express.  Does anyone know what’s going on?  Short of replacing the Express, is there a solution?

First step is to narrow down the proof of the Express being the cause.
Can you please connect the computer directly to the main router.
If it is a cable modem you will need to power down the modem for 15min (but test as 5min is often enough). plug the computer into it by ethernet .. and then test your bank site.. if it opens and you have no problems you have proven the issue is the Express.
If it fails then there is something else wrong.. and you are looking at the wrong area.. it has something to do with ISP routing..
Now most likely the Express is the problem.. but proof is good. Then you can be sure if you replaced the express the problem would go away.
Then I recommend you test via terminal.. the details are as follows.
    Open terminal..
    Type in
traceroute www.bankname.com (where you replace the bankname with the actual URL to your bank website).
See if the bankname is resolved by DNS to an IP address.. and see how far you get.
You should then test when you are connected at another location where you do get access.. is the IP the same.. is the traceroute the same..
These comparisons might not produce much but it is how you would start to break down the problem.
If it was me I would simply immediately replace the Express with a true router.. not a box that is primarily intended as AP or to use for airplay. Play being operative word here.
(If your express is Gen1 then I would reset to factory and flash back to 7.6.1 firmware) if it is gen2 and you are on 7.6.4 I think flashing back to earlier firmware has been made impossible.

  • Firefox much slower connecting to all web sites than Internet Explorer. Why?

Over the last few weeks, Firefox has become much slower connecting to virtually all web sites that I frequent than does Internet Explorer. Nothing has changed on my computer other than occasional downloads of Firefox "improvements".

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Problem w/ a dialup connection and Java web site sessions timing out.

Anytime a web site that uses a Java in a pop up box times out, the longer the time afterwards that there is no user response the worse the problems get.
The page freezes, then the browser, it can't be closed w/o using task manager,
The dialup adapter freezes (cant be disconnected).
It doesn't seem to happen with a broadband connection.
I have tried XP Pro w/sp2, XP Pro w/sp1a, 2000 w/ sp4 and all have the same problem.
I have tried a different hardware modem (orginal is a software modem) and the same thing.
I have tried older versions of Java, but the same. thing.
This happens on two different boxes (motherboards).
The sites involved are Yahoo card games chat sessions & Ameriatrade stock quotes sessions. The ISP is Earthlink.
Normal surfing is unaffected. This happens with Firefox & Opera and I believe Idiot Exploiter (whichisn't used).
One box is a Dell/Wintel and w/ the orginal setup (XP Home modified by Dell), worked w/ no issues. Dell says Java V1.5 was used (which I tried). I don't thik it is a O/S issue.
Regarding older versions of Java, anyone suggest one that doesn't have these issues??
BTW, no viruses and these were all fresh installs w/ the latest drivers.

In a thread about problems with Yahoo, someone noticed that your session can prematurely time out if you have set proxy to auto-detect here:
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced > Network > "Settings" button
Could you test with the setting on No proxy or Use system proxy settings and see whether it helps?

  • I can not connect to a web site at office, but home can

I can not connect to a cfml web site at office, but home can...well I copied ste file from home to office but didn't work, well?

  • Can't connect to specific Web site

I was able to access all Web sites using PCs attached to a WRT54GS (wired and wireless). Then, when nothing seemingly changed in my setup, I could no longer access a specific site with either wired or wireless. It is a site I access frequently (an ecommerce site that I maintain). Once the problem was seen on one PC, it is seen on all PCs using the router. It is a domain that I have registered, but I am not hosting it myself. Others have no problem accessing this web site.
I was able to reset the WRT54GS a couple of times (not just power cycling) to get rid of this problem, but eventually, the problem was no longer corrected by a reset. I also upgraded to the latest firmware, and it did not help. I tried removing the router and connecting a PC directly to my cable modem. I could access the site just fine this way.
I tried a different router (BEFSR41), and everything worked fine for a few days. Then the same problem started happening again. Resetting the BEFSR41 also stopped fixing the problem after a couple of tries. Again, hooking an individual PC directly to the cable modem worked fine.
I then tried a second WRT54GS router. For several days, there were no problems. But eventually, the site was not accessible again. I have found no other sites that I could not access. I have borrowed a non-Linksys wireless router for over a month now, and the problem has not been seen.
My question is why do three different Linksys routers (2 WRT54GS and 1 BEFSR41) no longer allow me to connect to a specific Web site? Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

I had the same problem, and I finally solved it through DNS refreshing.
After MTU manipulation left me nowhere, I tried ye olde:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /renew
...with no success.  I then looked over the ipconfig options, and decided to try:
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ...which finally worked!
So much for twelve hours of my life.

  • My internet bank web site that I have used for years will not load anymore this weekend. Most other web sites I use will load but not all. Also, some that load are now slow.

Could I have damage from a virus? My anti virus program recently found and eliminated an infection; and no further infection is turning up in scans. However, some files have been placed in the safe virus lockup chest. None appear to be necessary files for operation, but I am not sure.

  • Banking web site after login fails to display properly and says I need to have CSS enabled. Can't find how to do that.

Running FF 5.0 on Win XP Pro. Several web sites stopped displaying properly overnight without a computer shutdown or FF shutdown. One of the sites is a banking site which displayed normally until after login when it failed to display and there was a message saying best viewed with CSS turned on. I've restarted both FF and then the computer and FF to no avail. Tried both No Style and Basic Style Views with no change. Did not do a power off full computer shutdown and restart yet. Has only happened in FF 5.0. Never happened in previous versions.
