Update Safari 4.0.3 without trashing  Safari 3?

Hi, not a techie so hope someone can answer this one simply for me. I abhor the new Safari, so I've kept Safari 3 on my machine. I did install Safari 4 because the iStore insisted, but I never use it. So I now have "Safari" and Safari3" in my Apps folder, and Safari3 lives on my dock.
It works fine, but Software Update keeps bugging me about updating to Safari 4.0.4 (my Safari 4 is currently 4.0.3). If I let it do this will it try to do it to Safari3, and trash it, or will it just go for my Safari 4? I really don't want to lose Safari 3 or any of those things hidden in other places that it uses. My inclination is to tell Software update to ignore this update and live in Luddite happiness for as long as I can, but I wonder if then my iStore will stop working (actually not a tragedy, but nicer to have it). Any advice as to my best bet for keeping 4 working for the only thing that demands it and still having 3 for everything else?
Oh, and it's OS 10.4.11 on an Intel laptop. If that's relevant.
Thanks for any help!

Hi, thanks for your answer.
OK, I got the name wrong. iTunes flashed up the message saying I had to have Safari 4 when I was trying to access the iTunes Store: my apologies for concatenating the name, there are so many iThings it happens sometimes. I think of that as it insisting I have 4, however anthropomorphic a phrase it may be. I couldn't go to the iTunes Store without it.
I did indeed install 4, not just download it. Someone else advised me on how to do that – I think I renamed and archived my Safari 3 and then reopened it after the installation. Like I said, I'm not very techy. Every so often if I click on a link in an e-mail without having Safari 3 already running Safari 4 pops into life (the system insists on changing my default browser to Safari 4 every time I close down/start up, even though I chose Safari 3). Otherwise 4 slumbers, and I haven't had it causing any problems with Safari 3.
I know I can choose Update>Ignore update. I was wondering whether I should. I'm certainly reluctant to do anything that might stop my current set-up working. But between the big version number updates, is the iTunes Store likely to stop working for me again if I fail to keep Safari 4 up to date on the little .0.3, .0.4 etc increments?
I can download stuff from the store direct to my iPod via wifi, bypassing the whole mess, but then it won't appear in iTunes on my laptop (syncing is a one-way street?). So I do need – sometimes – to use the iTunes store from my Mac.
So deleting 4 is not an option. I really just wanted a best guess from someone likely to make a better best guess than me as to whether I could update without trashing things, or whether I could safely tell Software Update to ignore – in the short to medium term at least. (I know that in the long term Firefox probably beckons.)

• How do I update Safari without new OSX?

I have a 1 GB Intel core 2 running Safari 5.0.6 It no works on all sites. How can I update Safari without installing a new OS? My OS is 10.5.8

Where do I get new OSX??
You start here:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
That disk updates your computer to OS10.6 but also give you the Mac App Store application, the mechanism for all current and future upgrades.
However, newer Mac OS versions may need more RAM than you computer shipped with to run acceptably. Yours probably shipped with 2GB; the current Mac OS--10.10 Yosemite--is hard to run on less than 4GB. You model's RAM can be upgraded to 4GB officially but, with a newer, larger (and more expensive) special module, you can increase it to 6GB.

How can I update Safari without updating the OS? I presently have 10.7.5 and 1.6.1

PS, a note to Apple. You use terms like Mountain Lion,  Yosemite, etc. But in other places you use
10.6, 11.7, etc. Could you be consistent? use one or the other, not both. Please. Or always use both together.

Shoot Apple, you don't make things easy. I don't want to upgrade OS as you now require an itunes account to get upgrades, and I'm against that. (until I have to).
So I switched to the chrome browser, that works.
PS, Ralph, yes, I can lookup the version numbers, but I have not felt the need to memorize them. My question is why does apple make it so difficult that we have to memorize the version number to name correspondence?

• Updating Safari without rebooting

I read an earlier topic that was closed out, because the original post was asking for an improvement to OS X, but I have found a work around.
Why should I have to reboot when I update Safari, even though it's not part of the OS? After all, one of the selling points of OS X is that being a Unix system, it does not have to be rebooted for every little change like Windows does.
OK, opt-cmd-escape, then Force Quit the updater. Safari will still be upgraded when you restart your Mac the next time, because you care about the earth and turn your Mac off overnight.
I'm not sure if it will work if you try to use Safari before you reboot. I use Firefox, and keep Safari on my Mac and upgraded only because it is usually best to have a backup browser.

Rebooting takes a lot more time than killing the Software Update program.
Killing a program just means hitting a single 2 modifier keystroke, then clicking on the program and hitting Force Quit.
Rebooting means closing all of my files and programs, so that I save only the files I want to save. Then I have to wait for the Mac to come back up and reload all of my login items, of which I have only 8, but these are very important.
And frankly, I don't want to interrupt what I'm in the middle of doing at the time.

• Software update, safari 3.0.2 do not work after installing mac os 10.4.11

Hi,
I've been upgrading a B&W G3 from 10.3.9 to 10.4.x and after installing from a 10.4 retail disc I used the software updater to download and install 10.4.11.  This worked fine, no errors.  But, both Software Update and Safari will not load at all, they are not even showing in the Force Quit dialog.  So I returned my system to 10.3.9 re-installed 10.4 and took an image of my installation.  I then proceeded to install a combo update, repair permissions (a task I had been performing previously), test software update and safari (which both worked), take an image of the installation for combos 10.4.3, 10.4.5, 10.4.8 and 10.4.10.  Everything worked fine.  Then I installed the stand alone 10.4.11 and was presented with faulty Software Update and Safari!!!
I've concluded there is definitely something wrong with 10.4.11 update where it be a stand alone or part of the combo update.
Is there a get around, to install the update and then amended some files, settings or something?
Thanks

General advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL170
And for Intel Macs here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL172
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.4.11 update here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• How can I get an updated safari browser?

Hi.  I have a Macbook Pro, Mac OS X, version 10.6.8; I am getting error messages about updating my browser.  I checked the apple store to see if I could download a new version of Safari, but could not.  How can I get an updated safari browser at this time without downloading the new OS X Yosemite.  I know I might need to download the Yosemite, but would prefer to wait untill all the glitches are fixed.  I have learned that the Yosemite may cause wifi failure and e-mail connection problems.  Since I am not a computer expert, I don't need the headaches trying to figure out how what is wrong and how to fix a bug, so I would prefer to wait untill apple has totally fixed all the glitches that the Yosemite has. In the meanwhile, I just need to know how to go about updating a newer version of safari. I thing I have a 5.0

I’ve got a mid 2009 MacBook Pro.  Today, I updated to Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also updated Safari to 8.0.2.  Now, anytime I open Safari, it immediately quits and give me an error page that says, Safari unexpectedly quit and suggest that I can click on a Reopen button and restart it, but it just does it again.
I read some of the questions and responses here and went to ~/Library/Safari and threw out the webpages.db file and emptied the trash and rebooted.
      No luck; same problem.
BTW: Mail works
Any ideas how to get around this?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the linked support article, you may also need to remove this file in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.ltvbit.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those you find, remove them as well.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
if it's not already checked.

In fact, /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks has no subdirectory vmutils.framework. Thus it seems that some essential system files are missing. What to do?

Hello Kai and welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Might be a corrupted Safari preference file.. try this: Locate this file: com.apple.safari.plist
It's here: Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file, drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Now try to launch Safari. If it works, don't forget to click on the icon in your Dock, then click, "Keep in Dock".

I recently update Safari and it crashes every time I opened. Can anybody help me?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

• After updating Safari to the latest patch 7.1.2 on December 30, 2014 on OS X Maverick, my safari became unresponsive

After updating Safari to the latest patch 7.1.2 on December 30, 2014 on OS X Maverick, my safari became unresponsive at times.  It freezes the whole MacBook air for a few minutes, then comes back.  Pages can be very slow to load.  I have rebooted the modem, no change.  Does anyone else have the problem?

Unfortunately, my macbook air did it again.  It freezes, not only Safari but it takes around 15 to 20 seconds to go from one application/screen to another.  I had to force quit Safari and restart my computer.  Here is the log from the console.  Any idea.  I did what was indicated at the front of the message.

Then restore O S X using OS X Recovery
Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you'll have access to the built in utilities to restore OS X.
That will not only update Safari, but your system software as well.

• Update safari, xcode, iphoto company apple ID

I have a new macbook pro and need to update aps like safari, iphoto and xcode.
The problem, its a company computer and these apps find they are registered to the company apple ID. Is there any way I can get ownership, or update these without the use of the company appleID and pasword?
xcode? do I really need to uninstall it, and reinstall with my own appleID?
iphoto? Should I uninstall this and buy it again for $20? Although it does come with the original install for free?
Safari? ...
Thanks for answers
MWH

How can I post screenshots; I would like to show you that if I want to update Safari, it does ask me for an apple ID wich is not my own. The statement "so you don't need an Apple ID to update it to the most recent version" is great, but not what my computer does. Sorry
