Update Samsung SSD Firmware on Mac

Hello,
I am a proud owner of MacBook Pro i5 with a Samsung 128 SSD.
Recently, Samsung issued a firmware update. Normally, I'd have to take the SSD out, plug it into a SATA Windows machine, create bootable USB and update the firmware there.
Does anyone know any workaround on how to update SSD firmware on my Mac without having to plug SSD into windows machine? I recently found some blog about creating bootable WinXP CD and install firmware that way. I tried that, but it did not work, as I got some error messages while creating the BootCD and then the SSD updater from Samsung did not work...
I need this firmware because of TRIM support for Win7.
Thanks in advance,
Milan

Thanks for your answer, but thats not gonna happen, since the firmware needs to be started from a USB bootable disk. You cannot boot it off of BootCamp partition, since firmware update wipes all data from SSD.

  • How to update Samsung SSD firmware?

This seems like such a simple thing to do, but I'm getting stuck. My computer suddenly stopped talking to my SSD a few weeks ago, and after some help on here I was able to determine it was due to a bad internal SATA cable. But unfortunately, there still appears to be an issue with the SSD: it will eject and remount repeatedly when I connect it in its USB enclosure. I realized the firmware was out of date, and I am hoping that will fix the issue.
But I'm not sure exactly what steps need to be taken. I downloaded the update, an ISO file, and I have burned it do a disc, but the disc won't start the install process. I've read I need to boot from this disc (hold Alt when powering up), but doing this just takes me to recovery mode and I don't know what to do from there. It seems like this whole process would be a lot easier on Windows. Could I just install the update through a Windows computer even though the drive is formatted for my Mac?
    Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can/have to update the firmware on a PC

  • Updating samsung 840 firmware

SO everyone has said that you cannot update firmware from an external optical bay. This is NOT TRUE for ALL macs. I have an early macbook 2011 and had no problem updating this ssd drive from optical drive. Burned ISO to dvd, put in optical drive, restarted booting from cd drive ("Windows" came up) then followed on screen instructions. SO give it a try at least. See what happens!

    sharinganuser,
everyone has not said that — I, for one, have never said that.

What can I do to make the firmware upgrade run?

Can you please list your SSD model, current firmware version, and upgrade firmware version as reported by the tool?

  • Help -- I have a Lenovo Samsung SSD MZ7PC256HAFU on HP laptop -- ssd firmware will not update

    1.  i tried updating the SSD firmware by doing it with the samsung magician software --- it does not see the SSD
    2.  then i tried doing it with the Lenovo iso found here:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-69806
this supposed ISO file was not recognized by my main ISO burner.   another burner worked but my HP laptop still will not bood from this ISO dvd.
    3.   then i called Samsung.   they  told me that because this Samsung SSD is Lenovo OEM branded, that Samsung software will not work any more to update the firmware.
    Anybody?    Thanks !

You will probably have to find a Lenovo branded system (laptop).
Attach the Lenovo branded (samsung)  SSD.
Boot using the Lenovo branded ISO.
Return SSD back to your HP system.

  • Samsung SSD 840 EVO not detected in MacBook Pro 2012.

    Hello,
In January I had a problem with my computer where it would overheat, the battery would die quickly, and the overall computer speed was slower than a turtle for even the most basic functions. I brought my computer to a MacMan retailer and they fixed the issue. I then got my MBP back and it worked fine for about a month. It then repeated the same symptoms it had before I got it fixed. I talked to my roommate and did some research and ended up purchasing the Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb to replace my Hard Drive.
I transferred all my data to the new SSD and then installed the SSD to the internal bay where the hard drive sits without any problems. After the SSD was in place I booted up the computer and I got a "flashing folder with question mark." The SSD was not internally recognized by my computer. I then tried to put my Hard Drive back in to see if it would be recognized and it was not. However, both the SSD and Hard Drive are externally recognized via USB enclosure. I have been working on this for a couple days and am getting frustrated.
I have tried a number of fixes I thought would surely work. I reformatted the SSD to the appropriate Mac format that every forum and website recommend: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that does not work. I have reinstalled OS X Yosemite, I have tried updating the SSD Firmware through USB. Nothing has worked yet. I have tried using Apple's internet recovery system and neither drive is recognized when inside the computer. My best assumption but least favorable is the Cable within the MacBook Pro that connects to the Hard Drive/SSD is faulty. I fear that it may be faulty since now neither the SSD or Hard Drive is detected when they are installed in the MacBook Pro, only when external.
Can anyone please help me figure out what could be wrong? If you need more information just ask and I will do my best to answer them to your satisfaction. Anyone input, conclusion, or direction would be greatly appreciated!
Thank You for your time and knowledge!

You have already defined the probable cause, the internal SATA cable.  For verification, take the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  It is not an expensive repair, even if done by Apple.
    Ciao.

  • X230 SSD Firmware Update help

    Hello,
We are currently having some issues with waking up a X230-2324CTO from a sleep. When awoken from sleep it is unable to open any programs. Programs for example an icon on the taskbar will glow up like if you would normally open a program but then will return to a normal icon like suggesting it was never pressed and no program will open.
Our hope is that the solution is a SSD Firmware update. The have the system updated with every update available for the X230-2324CTO using System Update but this one remains.
Tho we can't figure out how to do this SSD Firmware Update. We don't have a CD drive in this model and when using an USB external disk drive (Samsung) we are unable to boot to the CD.
The question now is can someone provide us with a very clear step by step manual in how to create such a CD the documentation with the update FWSS31 is very poor to say the least. What do we need to create such a CD and how do we need to do it.
    Thanks for the support

We are using a Lenovo preload of Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. We currently have 5 Lenovo X230 2324CTO laptops and all of these laptops have the same problems.
One of these problems is that when coming into the office and they put there laptop into the Lenovo dockingstations and power up the laptop that when logged in the OS no program is able to load. There sometimes is a delay in this problem that for example they are able to open Outlook or a website but then no program is able to load. As I described earlier the animation for opening a program will occur on the bar but it will quickly just fade away. Also shutting the laptop off is not possible. It is possible to open the charm bar in Windows 8 and go to the shutdown option but on clicking the computer does nothing.
Another problem is that the user is stuck on the login screen of Windows 8 simply saying Welcome with a loading circle which never stops.
Only a forced shutdown (holding the power button for aprox 10 seconds) and restarting the laptop will make the laptop work again when either of these problems occur. These problems occur on random days. As I'm in the IT Team I know when a problem occurs and it can vary to a few days, every day or a few weeks even before it starts to show up again.
I also checked the users and there behaviour in using the laptop but I cannot find any strange behaviour at all. As i also stated before we are running on every update that Lenovo System Update 5 can trow at us. I also installed Intel Rapid Storage Technology the newest version in hopes of fixing some of the problems.
    Thanks for the support.

  • Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool ISO does not boot

    Hello everyone
Yesterday I tried to install Mavericks on my MacBook Pro 13" 8,1 but I got stuck because I have an Intel SSD inside and it seems that MacOSX 10.8 doesn't have the right driver on board. So I downloaded the Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool 2.0.6 ISO, burned it on a CD with DiscUtility and tried to boot from it.
The problem is that it doesn't boot from the CD. It just ends with the blinking/flashing question mark folder.
Luckily I have a second MacBook Pro 13" 8,1 from work. Just out of couriosity I inserted the disk inside this MacBook and tried to boot from it.
Everything went fine. I saw the Intel Firmware Updater etc.
So now my question: What is going on with my first mac? Why does it NOT boot the CD?
What I need to say at this point: I burned the CD with the MacBook from work. Could this be the reason?
    hope someone can help me
    Best Regards
    krebbl

yes that's right. Unfortunatly I don't have a Windows PC.
But like I said, my second MacBook Pro boots from this CD and shows me the firmware updater. My first MacBook with the Intel SSD does not.
And like in the post here http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57575091-263/intel-x25-ssd-incompatible-wit h-os-x-10.8.3/ it should be no problem.
Are there other ways to boot an ISO file?

  • T510 cannot hibernate after update ssd firmware

Recently installed crucial m4 ssd for my T510. reinstalled windows using recovery cd and ubuntu 12.10.  The machine was working fine.
After update the curcial firmware tfrom 00F o 010G I couldn't hibernate. The screen turns to black with all indicator on. Once move the mouse the screen turns back. I checked the power setting in Windows or lenovo power management, there is no problem. Yet I don't see other people having the same issue so I just want to check if y anyone using T510 with ssd have similar problems.
I also installed a Mountain lion skin pack which renders windows into a mac but I guess that wouldn't matter for system function, at least not as much as the boot is now handled by linux's grub.
    Thank you guys!!

To eject the CD, restart your mac and hold down the mouse button. If you don't have a mouse, hold down the eject button while restarting.
Before you do that, find the original DVD that came with your MB Pro. If you can get the boot DVD in the slot in time, hold down the C key to boot from the DVD, as soon as the DVD starts to spin, hold down the option key. Then you can choose to run the disk utility or boot into the Hardware Test.
    Good Luck.

  • TRIM firmware for the 128 GB Samsung SSD??

I have the 128 GB Samsung MMCRE28G8MXP that came with my T410S.  CystalDiskInfo (and googling) tells me that TRIM has not been implemented on the drive's firmware.  I can see that CrystalDiskinfo correctly identifies TRIM on my Crucial and my intel SSD's. Is there any information out from Lenovo or Samsung that TRIM will be implemented on this drive?  Or maybe a tool to clean up the pages on disk?

I'm in precisely the same boat with my X301, with the exact same drive. My machine was manufactured 2010/03/25. Googling around myself, I found the following facts:Samsung has released a firmware update giving TRIM support for their retail drives, but OEMs like Lenovo must issue their own. I don't know if anyone's tried applying the Samsung firmware to their Lenovo drive; there is a risk of turning the drive into a paperweight, if it's recognized at all. There is a rumor that Lenovo will release firmware giving TRIM support sometime soon. If a drive doesn't have TRIM support, to wipe it one must use the secure erase facility, which wipes the whole drive. On Linux, this can be done from a rescue CD withhdparm --security-erase [password] [device]Obviously this is rather inconvenient, as it requires a complete backup + restore. Samsung's firmware release was January, so you have to wonder what the holdup is for Lenovo ...

I downloaded and installed the: Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.6 on my mac mini running 10.8.1, was I correct in doing this ?
I didn't see this update come up in "Software Update"
If I was not meant to install this update, would it cause ANY damage at all to my mac ( this is my second as I dropped the first )
If I were to re-install ML would this fix any errors that this may have caused ?
The bottom of the page I link to says:
Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: MM51.0077.10
But when I click on "About this Mac" it says:
    Boot ROM Version:          MM51.0077.B10
      SMC Version (system):          1.75f0
What does the additional "B" mean?
My mac mini is the Mid 2011 Model.
I am sorry if I am sounding super paranoid about this, but I don't want to have caused any permanent damage.

    Hello,

No, Firmware is unaffected by any OS change or re-install.

  • Do I need to install  Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel) and firmware

    Hiya,
I recently bought a new Macbook Pro,it is Mac OS X version 10.4.8, i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)?
I also tried to install MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2, however it says the computer doesn't need to install it. And I checked my Boot ROM Version is MBP22.00A5.B00. After the update it should be: MBP11.0055.B08 (MacBook Pro 15 inch). So I don't know what to do?
    please help!
    Thanks.
    Catherine

"Do I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel) and firmware"
You don't "need" to install anything. If you think you can benefit from the updates then go ahead.
"i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)? "
If it came with 10.4.8 preinstalled, then you do not need to install it.
"So I don't know what to do?"
Nothing. If it says the update isn't needed, then it's already been applied at the factory.

  • Mac Pro slow write speed on Samsung SSD drive

    Hi,
I am wondering why I get very slow write speeds on my Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB system startup drive in my Mac Pro (early 2008).
I get an average write speed of approx. 35 MB/s and not much more for top speed. I tested it by transfering a large file (8GB, .m4v) from my Mac Pro internal Raid 0 (4x 2TB Stripe Set) delivering up to 550 MB/s. The read speed of the SSD is around 270 MB/s which I consider to be OK for that I have just the 3 Gb/s internal SATA interfaces in my pretty outdated Mac Pro.
I don't see any Memory or CPU overruns or consuming system tasks while doing the tests and no other user programs except Activity Monitor is running. The following screen shots from the Activity Monitor should proove my findings:
    Setup:
Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB (SATA 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s compatible) system startup drive. Free Space left on SSD is around 100GB of 250GB.
    Mac Pro (early 2008, Model 3,1), 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB.
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
Samsung sais there should be 540 MB/s for Seq. Read and 250 MB/s for Seq. Write for their SSD drive.
Any hints what could be done to increase especially that low write speed of around 35 MB/s (average) on the SSD in my Mac Pro?

    Really great 'The hatter' !!!
Thanks a lot for your exceptional support.
Next to my 4x discs in the 4 SATA II drive bays I have installed a additional OWC drive kit that allows me to have another 2 disks sitting in the empty bay below the CD/DVD drive and those are connected to the motherboard. So there is a lot to handle for that controller you mentionned ;-)
I will follow your guidance and boot from my 'maintenance' system on direct attached external drive, install the TRIM Enabler there as well and do the DU repair run. I always have a separate system available that gives me the chance to boot my Mac from there. And in addition I regularly use ONYX to keep my OS X clean and do the maintenance.
Anyway, you're the man of the day!
PS; I am looking forward to finally receive my new Mac Pro (late 2013) ordered on the 18th of December one of these days and then I hope that I can fly ;-)

  • Input output error samsung ssd mac 09

I bought a Samsung SSD 840 EVO drive because my drive from my macbook had a destroyed file and broken.
Yesterday I tried to partition the drive into 1 with GUID but the error came up with :
POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory
I used a USB stick with an installation on it
Today I tried with a CD with mac os x the same procedure but this time with a different error:
                    Input output error
With both examples I also tried to erase the drive but with the same error 1 and 2.
I am not sure what to do next. Hope someone has a solution.
    Michael

Either the drive, the SATA cable, or the logic board is faulty. Make sure the cable is not damaged and is securely inserted.
