Update to 10.4.10 fails after erase

Hi, my mini has been crashing a lot recently due to me messing around with it. So i decided to rebuild it, which i did 3 times.
The first time i rebuilt it (standard erase) i installed all the updates from the system update. It rebooted, went to the gray screen, rebooted again and then got stuck on the blue screen.
The second time i rebuilt it (after a erase and zero'ing the hdd) i chose to only install the 10.4.10 combi from the system update. It rebooted, went to the gray screen, rebooted again and then got stuck on the blue screen.
The third time i rebuilt it (standard erase), i installed all the updates from 10.4.6 - 10.4.9 and all went well. So i downloaded the 10.4.10 intel update (75mb or so) and installed that. Again it rebooted, went to the gray screen, rebooted again and then got stuck on the blue screen.
I understand that there is error that can occur when doing system updates, but surely on a clean system this shouldn't happen ? Can anyone shed a little light on what i should do ? I am going to rebuild the system tonight and leave it on 10.4.9 till i can see why 10.4.10 kills my Mini

Note that the vast majority of problems reported with 10.4.10 & Intel Macs have nothing at all in common with this poster's symptoms, which is an inability to boot the Mini past the blue screen.
You are focused on the Airport issue, which mostly seems to be associated with laptops running on battery power. Another group (currently with the largest number of views & a very high post count) is concerned with Rosetta apps not launching. There is still another group complaining about issues with USB-connected external audio devices. And perhaps most famously, there was the group with the "popping" issue with external speakers.
You might say, "Aha! All are signs that the most recent update(s) are flawed!" The problem with that is careful reading of these threads reveals something curious: almost nobody complaining about being affected by one of these issues is complaining about being affected by another. Moreover, buried in every one of these long threads are posts from some users with the same Mac model as others saying they have had no problems at all, or that their problems were solved in some way not involving reverting back to 10.4.9 or any of its components.
Moreover, there are millions of Macs in use but only hundreds of reports of any problems at all. Sites like Discussions or MacFixIt are devoted in large part to users helping other users resolve their problems, so it isn't unusual to see reports of problems dominate over those reporting no problems. Some theorize that there is a great number of 'silent' users experiencing problems that don't report them, so this means nothing. However, major problems that really do affect tens of thousands of users are almost always sought out by mainstream news organizations, particularly when they involve Apple, a high profile company closely followed in both broadcast media & the financial press. If the problems really were this widespread, it seems extremely unlikely they would not be much more widely reported.
So, is the "crock" filled with a stew rich with big chunks of major update flaws, or a watery mix of assorted problems relatively few users face? More to the point, how many users are waiting for a fix an update didn't cause & a new one can't cure?
If the answer to either question is "I don't know," doesn't it make sense to try the time-tested repair & diagnostic steps you will find in these discussions before blaming everything on some update?

    Click on Utilities -> Terminal and post the output of the following Terminal commands. In Recovery console you have to switch between Terminal and Safari.

  • Disk Utility erase fails after computer wakes up

    I'm having an annoying problem with Disk Utility on OS X Lion 10.7.5 failing to erase a harddrive thats plugged into a HDD Docking Station via USB after computer wakes up from screen-off. I have an OCZ Agility 4 SATAIII 512.11 Gb SSD. I'm trying to do a complete erase with 7-Pass Erase so I can use this SSD for my Sony VAIO Laptop so I can ready it for fresh install for Ubuntu.
    Now the problem with Disk Utility is that when I've selected 7-Pass Erase, I go away and leave the computer to do it's thing while it erases it, however when I come back and wake the computer screen to come back on, Disk Utility then tells me the erase failed. –– In my System Preferences for Power Saving settings I have the computer set to NEVER sleep, but only put the screen off after a while when not in use (ie; after 30 minutes). My other Sys Prefs settings are also set to ask for login after waking, I've not yet tested without this setting turned off to see if it's cause of problem, but I'll probably give it a shot anyway and see what happens. But I don't see how that would cause the problem since anything working in the background should still remain active while the screen is off just like Time Machine does for example when it does backups since it's USB powered.
    Anyway… I think is either some kind of bug/error in Disk Utility or OS X itself. I've tried other Hard Drives and SSD's and they've all worked just about the same, and I don't think it's the HDD Docking Station either because it mounts everything perfectly and runs fine for continus use, I just hope there's a workable solution to fix this annoying problem when waking the screen from sleep. I have tested that it is screen-off that's causing it to fail by pressing the following keys Ctrl + ⇧ + ⏏ to put the screen to sleep, then waking again then entering my password to get back in. I have 1 other thing I've yet to try out, I've currently got it plugged in via USB port on my keyboard, I'll have to try it out on my iMac's main USB's ports to see if that may be part of the problem too.

    Please boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) and ensure you see the spinning globe. If you do, you can use diskutil cs commands to initialize your disk and re-install/restore from a TM backup.

  • I just installed 10.6.3 from the disk and then updated to 10.6.8. After restarting I did a disk verify to make sure all was well and it told me it wasn't and that I needed to erase, reformat and install again. Is there something I am missing?

    I am really tired. I have been working for days to upgrade my 2008 Mac Pro. I purchased 10.6.3 and did all available updates. I then downloaded mavericks which took forever. Once I tried to install mavericks it locked up my computer on the install screen. I eventually reinstalled 10.6.3 after erasing my HD and I worked perfectly. I again installed the combo pack to update to 10.6.8. After doing this I did a disk verify before going any further and again it said there were problems. I tried a disk repair and was unsuccessful and had to erase and reinstall 10.6.3. What am I doing wrong?

    Your Boot Drive may be dying.
    Do not wrestle with it now. Instead, take a new drive and Install Mac OS X on it from scratch. If you do not have an available drive, buy one -- they are well under US$100. There is no need to shuffle drives around, your Mac will boot from whatever drive is specified in System Preferences > Startup Drive.
    Once you have a working version of Mac OS X, the full Mac OS X can be applied to resolving those other problems. Solving problems with just the Installer and its Utilities is very difficult.

    Can anyone help me, after the last update from Apple to my iphone 3g I get call fail after call fail. It is getting embarassing at work where I rolled these phone out.

    Standard troubleshooting is
    1)Reset: reset your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    2)Restore as new or from backup: see page 141 of the manual for details...http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_UserGuide.pdf
    Note the last sentence of the Restore paragraph... "In iTunes, you can also restore from a backup without deleting data stored on iPhone."

  • BB Tour Fails after Update

    Like others, I get the clock on white, then black screen of death, then more clock on white.  The difference is, mine won't stop.  It just keeps going and going and going.  From what I can tell on the BlackBerry website, I need to pay someone to help me resolve the problem (????).  Am I missing something??  PLEASE HELP!

  • Apple VPN Client fails after 10.4.7 update

    I have three different remote computers that cannot connect over VPN remotely to our xServe running 10.3.9. After installing 10.4.7 update recently, all three remote computers fail to even hit the server logs (ie. no connection, no denial, no nothing on the server end). I had one machine that was running 10.4.6 tonight. VPN connection worked fine. Ran the software update, restarted, now that computer fails to make a connection.
    It has nothing to do with the firewall on the xServe. I have turned that off with no success.
    Any ideas? I appreciate the help.

    Thanks for this. I will look into it further. The document you refer to states that 10.4 Clients should only be stopped rather than uninstalled, this concerns me a little. As I have tried simply stopping the service I will escalate to uninstalling the client and then see if reinstalling resolves the issue. Many thanks for your response.

    I supsect you did the update on other than your syncing computer. If yu did the app, music and synced photo will not be on the iPod after the update since those items are not in the backup that iTunes makes. See:

    The above applies to all updates performedvia USB on a computer. To get stuff back, restore from backup on the syncing computer.
    The above in my educated guess since you provided litle information about how you did the update.
    You can redownload many iTunes purchases by:

    Just want to add that I had to edit grub at start up and add "single" at the end of the kernel line.
    The reason is that switching to runlevel 3 didn't work for me.

  • Updating Adobe Community Help files fails every time after starting

    Hello,
    I e.g. go to «Support Center for Photoshop» from the menu within the app. Adobe Community Help starts up and tells me theres new content, do I want to download that. It seems to start the dl just fine, then reports an error «16882» (if I'm remembering it right).
    Why? We have very fast very broadband internet connection and I use a 2011 27" iMac with max Gig RAM installed.
    Any hints there would be appreciated.

    Seems Adobe Air or Cummunity help has gone cprrupt. Lets follow the below suggestions:
    Step 1: Uninstall adobe air from Utilities and re-install the latest adobe AIR from "http://get.adobe.com/air/otherversions/"
    Step 2: Follow "http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/842/cpsid_84215.html" and re-install the Community Help Air application.
    Step 3: Restart the machine and launch adobe Community Help and try to install all the updates and check if it works fine.

  • Photo booth again fails after Update of System

    A few months ago I found my Photo Booth stopped showing a camera picture after I upgraded with a System Update but then cured the problem after a simple Reboot.
    Well the photo booth has again failed to operate following a recent Update of the OS and all I get is a blank screen. This time it won't kick start after a re boot. Is there any way to find out why it won't switch on its internal camera and cure it for good.
    The saved snapshots will show in the photo booth but it's simply the "live" picture that won't work.
    There is plenty of daylight in the room so it shouldn't be just a black screen should it?

    I think I can pull this question off now. The system has wrong-footed me again.
    It seems to be that when you have too many computers all calling upon the same wireless broadband connection in the one building, the DNS or something gets choked.
    I switched off the router the modem the wireless and the main desktop pc
    I then rebooted them all. After it was all up and running I turned on the MacBook and connected via the usual AirPort and both Google Earth and PhotoBooth were running as sweet as a nut.
    It seems all too easy to think the Macbook has got itself in a twist when in fact it's just responding to a tired and emotional broadband connection that has lost its bandwidth due to over crowded usage.
    I'll close this question now.

    I recently reverted my computer back to the factory image which is Windows 8. I previosly had upgraded to Windows 8.1 and was trying to upgrade again to Windows 10 and that kept failing so I reverted back to factroy image to get a fresh start. Now when I try to get back to Windows 8.1 so that I can then upgrade to Windows 10, the Windows update keeps failing and I am stuck in Windows 8. The Windows Store says I can update to Windows 8.1 but that I have to run all the updates for Windows 8 first. After loaing the factory image, I run Windows Update and the Windows Update program does install a new Windows Update Program. After that, I run Windows Update and it finds 165 updates. When I download and install those, they fail and the system reverts back to Windows 8. Will 165 updates, is there a certal order I should install them? Is there another way to get back to Windows 8.1?

    Several GTK applications are failing after the latest updates.
    So far, I have found Bleachbit and Gtkpacman are crashing, but there may be more.
    They all give the  same error messages (obviously, the application name/line number in the first line varies):

    pacman -Q pygtk gtk2 give different versions, as I haven't yet been able to fix my previous problem with Firefox 3.6 (machine in constant use), so I guess that's the problem.
