Update to 10.5.5, reboot, system take forever to come back?

I've been working on getting our server upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.5 and today I was going to give it another go. I have just completed the setup and the first thing I did was upgrade the OS from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5 and reboot, the system is right now in a state I have found it in every previous time I've done this:
The screen shows the bluish space image but no login screen and the drives are busy working on something. It does this for a long time. In the past I forced the system down then rebooted and it came right up but today I thought I'd see how long it would take to come out of this funk.
Here's a visual of what my system is doing, it has been in this current state now for more than 20 minutes... http://www.automaticduck.com/screenshots/SERVERafter_10.5.5_updateweb.mov
I haven't found any posts describing this behavior. Is this kinda normal?

I always, emphatically recommend a migration over an upgrade install, when moving from any version of Mac OS X to a newer one, especially with OS X Server.
How would one "migrate" from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5? As far as I know it is only possible to run the updater program to get from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5.
There are aspects of software RAID that can be circumvented by fully recreating it under 10.5,
as well did you run a full volume (verify, repair permissions) & disk check (at least & minimally, verify the SMART status) ? Verify the status of the RAID ?
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the RAID, one side had an incorrect number of extended attributes, the other side was fine.
How do I check the SMART status?
Have you tried connecting to the server from your workdesk, via Server Admin & Workgroup Manager ? You might very well be able to. If so, shutdown services (you haven't stated which are in use),
I didn't check if I could get to to the system via those apps, sorry. Last night after 6.5 hours I gave up and rebooted the system.

• Dead after running out of batteries - takes forever to come back to life

Hi, I have this problem that has gotten worse
when it runs down the battery and shuts off, the recovery time is now very long. the battery is aged to where it probably only gives 40 minutes, but i am wondering if its something else. could it be the internal battery that get reset wth the SMC?
even now, i do the PMC procedure, holding the power button down with the battery out and no plug, and it still wont turn on... until it just wakes up at some point later.
i need to figure this out because when its in this deep coma, its dead to the world and i cant use it to do any work.

• T410 - WinXP Pro Taskbar hangs and system takes forever to shutdown

Hi,
I've been having a weird issue with my T410. I created 3 partition on the HDD, one ntfs which i install WinXP Pro, that i downgraded using IBM recovery disk (since mine came with Win7 x86). My 2nd partition, is using ntfs with win7 x64, which i clean installed using a different license. Im reserving my 3rd partition to install my linux soon. Win7 on my machine works awesome. On the other hand, my XP is running nuts, the taskbar hangs every other minute and the system takes forever to shutdown (sometimes i just dont bother to wait,i'd just force shutdown). After I click Start>Shutdown, some of the programs will start to slowly close, and then it just hangs there. If i try to open any programs, i get an error message saying that the system has initiated shutdown, but it just hangs there for like good 5 minutes. Task manager wont open during that time too...I've tried uninstalling some programs that i thought might be distrupting the shudown to no avail. Can anyone suggest me anything else that i can do?
On the worse case scenario where i **might** need to reinstall my XP using the recovery disk again, would it be possible to keep my other partitions intact? I dont remember seeing that option in any of the IBM's that i've worked with. That option came standard with my old toshiba..
Btw, im running a T410, i5 540, 4gigs DDR3 RAM, if that helps.
Thanks
Huz

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Check for Login Items
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there.
And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash
If there's enough disk space and login items aren't an issue, launch Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing.
Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Select: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions).
If the disk needs repairing >

I have 15000 photos in my 1Phooto library in 58 events. I have also made 27 slide shows from some of these events. When opening iPhoto, the photoscome up slmost instantly but the side bar seems to take forever to come up. Is there s limit to the amount of photos yu can have or to the amount if items in the side bar?

Try this basic troubleshooting technique: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot
4 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

• After downloading the new 6.0, I cannot seem to sync with my Google calendar. It will give me a schedule for a few weeks but if I ask for what's going on next month, it will take forever to come up and then say "no events scheduled." What's up?

After downloading 6.0 on my ihpone 4 I am having trouble syncing events on my google calendar. If I pick a day next month it will take forever to come up and then say "no event scheduled." Can I just go back to the old operating system? I'm not using any of the new 6.features anyway.

• System takes forever to load tabs or update tabs. I have to stop a tab from uploading in IE to refresh.

opening Firefox seems to take a while. After it opens it takes forever to finish loading my Yahoo home page. Opening a second tab to get to anything else will not happen until the first tab quits cycling.
I can not play Pandora on a tab because it stops it whenever I do anything on another tab.
CPU usage for Firefox stays at 85%+. Memory is not an issue. I am running XP.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• IOS 8/8.0.2 reboots during call and then comes back

I have seen issues with IOS 8 and 8.0.2 on both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 6 where I am on a conference call, and the phone goes dead to the white screen with the black apple, then 30 seconds later, the phone comes back on with the previous call still connected. Has anyone else seen this issue? I have seen this issue at least once a day since upgrading to IOS 8 on my iPhone 5 and my receipt of my iPhone 6 and then subsequently on IOS 8.0.2

This very same thing everyone here has posted about happened to me this very evening. I only found this post by googling around as there's not too much.
I have a 5c, my friend has a 5s. Both of us running 8.02. During a call, first my phone cut out like the call dropped and I see the Apple logo on screen like its rebooting. I'm like "what the..." but before I can even say the word, my phone is back at the home screen and my call resumes. Even the call time counter kept counting like the call never dropped. But I could not here my friend though he said he could still hear me.
The strange part of this is within a couple of minutes the exact same thing happened to my friend on his phone during our same call. Apple logo, screen reboot, he can't hear me for like 5 seconds and then all is normal again. He suspects the NSA; I say loose bolts in the plumbing.
Man, I hope this 8.1 update fixes this. And Safari, which runs awful. And the Camera Roll. And the...

• I was updating my phone and it turned off and won't come back on

I was trying to update my iphone 5s yesterday and it shut off and now it won't come back on. I've had it plugged in all night and have tried holding the home and sleep button but nothing works

Try holding the home and sleep buttons for as long as a minute. Try it a few times.
Are you sure it's plugged into a good outlet using a good charger and cable?
Else, take it in to Apple and let them look at it... you have a 1 year warranty.

• Keeps coming up that I need to update the FF 4.0 but when I click the update button & then the apply update button after the download it doesn't apply & just come back up to update firefox

I have FireFox 4.0 it comes up and says that it needs to be updated, when I click the (NEXT) button & it does the contacting server/downloading the update. I click the apply update button & the fire fox window closes & the status bar come up with the installing the updates & will restart firefox in a moment. However once the window restarts, the notice that firefox needs to be updated come back. When I click the (next) button to download the update, the cycle begins.
I clicked the HELP link at the top of the window & then the ABOUT FIREFOX to see if there might be multiple updates, but it's the same one each time "modzilla firefox yahoo edition yahoo 1.8"
I love fire fox & until now have never had a problem when it comes to installing the updates.

Well I went to the Tools/options/and general section & clicked on the restore default for the home page. However I am still having the same issue.

• HT4623 during update ipad went dark and can't get it to come back - it is plugged in

Help my ipad went dark when installing the last update. The battery may not have been fully charged but it was plugged in. It has been 3 hours now and can't get it to come back.

It sounds to me like it's in recovery mode

• My wireless keyboard has a few sticky keys. They are harder to push and take longer to come back up. I don't see evidence of a spill but I wonder if that's what happened?

I'm not sure if something got spilled on our wireless key board because I can't see any evidence but the space bar and a few other keys are sticky and take too long to come back up. Any ideas how to fix this?

Possibly wd-40. I haven't tried this. The consensus off these forums is that using wd-40 may or may not be a good idea.

• Security update installs but doesn't reboot system

After installing both Security Update 1.0 and 1.1 the system just sits there on a blue screen with the spinning circle. I've let it sit for over an hour, but end up doing a hard reset. After that everything is fine, no weird restart/login issues and I can restart between boot camp just fine. Oh and other updates that require a restart work just fine.
Any ideas as to why the security updates won't restart my system?
Thanks,

• Large merged WebHelp system takes forever to display TOC/Index in Firefox

Hi,
We are using a merged Web Help system (RoboHelp 9). There are about 20 modules, many of which are optional. In Internet Explorer 9, it works fine and displays the TOC/Index within 10 seconds. But in Firefox 19.0, it takes a full 3 minutes to display the TOC/Index. Obviously this is unacceptable. One of our doc people did some tests and determined that when you have a merged TOC structure, but one or more of the merged projects are not actually present, Firefox seems to spend a long time waiting for it to appear. Eventually just displays the TOC without the missing projects (as it should).
Does anyone have suggestions on how to mitigate this?
Also - and I think this is an entirely different problem - I can't get the Chrome browser to display anything except the help toolbar, even for a single (non-merged) help module. Is there a security setting that I'm missing?
thanks,
Jenny Hecker

I see where Willam is going by suggesting different outputs with different combinations but I'm hoping that can be kept in reserve.
From the look of it, you are testing the help when it is installed locally rather than on a server. That could impact results. Try generating the parent first and then all of the children to a web server location. Once they have all been generated, then try removing different child folders.
I recall seeing this issue before quite a while back and I think it was when not all the children had been generated once.
