Update to 10.6.1 black screen at startup

hello,
I have a MBP bought in June 2007
I was trying to upgrade to 10.6.1 and now I got a black screen at startup. Only the keyboard has the backlight on. Nothing on the secreen. What should I do ?
thank you

A place to start might be this article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573?viewlocale=en_US
It's also possible that you have the NVIDIA problem:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If you can't get it working following the steps in the first article, you can contact Apple regarding the NVIDIA repair program.
Good luck!

Completely black screen on startup so please don't say go into safe mode etc, because I can't.
    I can't see a thing.
Like once in every 100 goes it will come on and I can F12 to boot from the format disk but it eventually freezes before completion.
Video showing what's happening - BTW the buttons you see me pressing are Fn+F5 I've heard that that sometimes works, but yeah, it didn't.

    Hi
Look not good dude I think its an serious hardware issue
I checked the movie and cannot hear a beep when the notebook passes the POST (power on self-test). So for me it looks like something wrong with the hardware
But did you try to connect an external monitor in order to check if something would be visible on second screen? Check this
    You could also try this:
Disconnect AC adaptor, remove the battery, wait some time (3-5 hours), then connect both parts and try to power up the notebook. If this fails, well in such case have no many other ideas. Ohhh wait maybe you could check the RAM modules. Try to power up the notebook using one module in each slot

  • Black screen on startup early 2008 macbook pro

I am very disappointed with Apple right now. My early-2008 15 inch macbook pro shows a blank/black screen on startup. The hd runs fine and I can dim and undim the backlight on the screen but it stays black/blank.
I talked to an Apple rep and she told me that it was probably my graphics card (which I asked her specifically about when I researched and found many other people like myself with the same issue and then the lawsuit that came as a result). Of course, Apple no longer replaces the graphics card (like a true business person would) as of December 2012 even though they know the cards in the macbooks pros are defective. The Apple rep told me that I would have to take it in to a Apple tech to get it "officially" diagnosed as the graphics card being bad (which would cost me @$150 just for it to be looked at!) and then I would probably still have to pay for the repair!
Of course this happened in the middle of the week while I was in the middle of working on a sermon and other presentation projects. So I had to do my best to try to work from scratch without access to the info on my hd because the graphics card is defective.
Apple, you know the card is defective so please just replace the card! I'm not asking for any perks or upgrades! Just to be able to use my Macbook Pro that, up until now, I have been bragging about and telling everyone how happy I was to switch over from windows!
    HELP!! HELP!! HELP!! HELP!!

If you experience distorted video or no video . . . take your affected product to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store to determine which service and support options are available. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
No, it has not cost anything in the past.
Note: as of Dec 7th 2012, it is unlikely products qualify for this extended repair coverage.
That does not mean it's an automatic "no."

  • [BIOS Update Failure] HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j021tx stuck at black screen on startup

    Hello
So I decided to update the BIOS on my laptop because it was on the recommended list of driver updates. It started off smooth at first, but then the screen turned black and just stayed like that for like an hour. Having read from other posts that BIOS updates should take a minute if properly executed, in the fear that my update is not working properly I decided to shut it down. (I had to pull out the battery to shut it down because even the power off button was not working).
But then when I switched it back on the screen remained black forever with the LED near capslock flashing twice. I tried pressing windows key and B key method but didn't make a difference, pulling out the battery and the AC power method didn't work also. I did refer to the HP help document that said "if your capslock LED is flashing twice, it means it is trying to recover the BIOS so just wait until it reboots itself properly". Well I have been waiting for 20 hours now and I am pretty sure this is not going to work out either.
Any help on what I could do at the moment? I don't want to send it to HP to get repaired cuz that will take weeks while I need it working ASAP since my semester at uni has started already and I am an IT major!
And shame on you HP...why recommend it to me when the update is not proven to be 100% safe....
It is on Windows 8.1 64 bit,

it seems that this bug related to i915 chip ( or intel graphic card ) is fixed in kernel 3.18rc3 mainline ( we can find this kernel package in AUR )
there is also another and complete different bug when we use a kernel 3.17 and even 3.18 ( it's a random bug ) but with a similar effect : boot can hang ( the boot process suddenly stops ) :
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189622
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189324
downgrading to kernel 3.16.x is the workaround
I assume my computer is affected by one of these bugs. While I can get to the point where my window manager is loaded, everything almost immediately hangs (but doesn't freeze). Terminal windows become non-responsive and Chromium will refuse input. It's very weird. This happens with both of the 3.17 kernel updates but not in any of the 3.16 releases (including 3.16.7).
This is on an AMD system (cpu/gpu w/ open source driver). Overall 3.17 seems rather buggy.

  • Black screen on startup after update

I am using Leopard (clean install) on a 24" aluminum imac. I've had this problem a couple times now. When I install the system updates, it tells me it will need to reboot. I say OK. It says something about needing to reset "boot caches" and then it will reboot. I say OK. It appears to shutdown or attempt to restart, but instead it just sits there at a black screen. I can tell the system is still on, but nothing happens. After a while, I can do a hard shutdown and reboot, and things seem to work OK... until I am asked to do another update. (Leopard just came out, but I've already been asked to do a system update several times now... perhaps its the same one that keeps failing?)

The exact same thing just happened on my 20" iMac G5. Anyone have any ideas?

  • TouchSmart 320-1050 Win7 Pro After Windows update, login results in a black screen + white cursor

    Hi ...
After some Microsoft automatic upgrades were done om my HP TouchSmart 320-1050 this week, when I logged in after the reboot, all I got was a blank (black) screen and a white arrow cursor, which worked fine -but there was nothing -no video output on the screen. Even a <CTL><ALT><DEL> did not bring anything up on the screen and I had to force the system down with a hard power down. I tried with user logins and Administrator login but the behaviour was the same.
I could boot and get a picture in SAFE mode but not with a normal boot and login.  There were NO ERRORS in the Windows event logs that seemed to shed any light on the issue.
The system was shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium however I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro so I could join my domain.
I couldn't diagnose the problem -with nothing showing on my screen- so last night I check what updates were installed to see about de-installing them from Safe mode.
After de-installing the most recent Microsoft HotFix (KB2679255) and rebooting .... POOF!  I had my desktop displayed again after I logged in.
I don't know what piece of software was interacting with this HotFix - but thought I should post the issue, just in case someone else encountered the problem... or someone in HP Support wants to investigate ... (Let me know and I'll supply what info I can.)
    Thanks

    thanks for letting folks know.

  • Black screen on startup after installing security updates KB293357 and KB2937610 on Win 7 64bit

After installing security updates KB293357 and KB2937610 (both related to .NET) on Win 7 Enterprise 64 bit, my computer fails to start up correctly:
    - start up and windows boot screen
    - then black screen and computer freezes
The only option to this problem I found so far is do a cold reboot and then let system repair uninstall the updates. Is there a better way to solve this problem?
    System:
    Asus UL80VT laptop
NVIDIA GeForce G210M (driver version 9.18.13.2702)
    Win 7 Enterprise, fully updated

    Hi,
After you unstall the two updates, does the black screen issue completely disappear? We should first figure out whether the two updates are the culprits.
Since the two updates are related with .net as you mentioned, then here's a .NET Framework Repair Tool released by Microsoft, I suggest you try it and check if it cna detect something.

  • 2.2.1 update failure - iPod dead with black screen

The update resulted in an error and would not complete. Now my iPod is dead. The message says it is in restore mode and when I click to restore, it says that I need the current version of iTunes. I checked and it says iTunes is current. I tried on another computer running XP and it give the same message. iTunes recognises an iPod is connected but that's all. No name of the iPod or it's settings and content. I have tried holding the home and power buttons for 10 seconds, then release the power button etc., etc. Still the same. Tried other suggestion posted on the web, nothing works. It will not go into restore mode. I blieve it is stuck in DFU mode, indicated by its black screen. My iPod Touch is NOT HACKED. Apple, please help me!!! I bought it new a few months ago, and it worked beautifully until the 2.2.1 ubdate. Please help me bring it back from the dead, and restore my faith in your products! PLEASE HELP!!! iPod Touch, 2G, 8 gig

The only fix I could possibly see coming is to get the touch firmware re-flashed at a service outlet at this point. From reading about this problem in multiple forums around the net the firmware upgrade seems to be failing in different places during the install. My sons each have an ipod touch, one upgraded no problem, the other is blank screened and no response to the home/power button reset at all. Just endless unrecognized usb device messages. Perhaps a new windows driver install to regain connectivity but I do not think this can be fixed without re-flashing the firmware to the device directly without the use of iTunes. I'm very interested to see how they rectify this issue.

  • Black screen on startup - Radeon graphics driver or EDID issue?

Having installed Arch, I am only able to boot into Linux (console mode) when I pass the option "nomodeset" in GRUB to disable KMS. If I try to boot with KMS enabled then the screen goes black almost immediately upon boot. There appears to be no further activity from the system: I can't even reboot using CTRL-ALT-DEL. Nor is there any log activity that I can find. The system appears to just hang.
My graphics card is a Radeon 9200. From a general websearch, other people have reported a similar issue with this card on other distros, but the "solution" they get is usually "it now works with the updated version of $(DISTRO)". My next move should probably be to try the Catalyst driver, but there's one other thing that suggests to me that the problem is more to do with the monitor (specifically, with the EDID provision) than the driver....
Running "vbeinfo" at the GRUB command line shows the default resolution as 1280x1024x32. When I run "vbetest" at the GRUB command line, I initially get the graphics test pattern displayed correctly. However, when I press enter to end that test pattern I don't return to the GRUB command line. Instead I get a black screen with a blinking white cursor. No input from the keyboard is displayed if I type, but pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot does work from here.
I've looked at the section on the Wiki about Forcing Modes and EDID, but this area's still very much a mystery to me, and the Wiki itself says that this secition is still "a WIP". I guess I'm just wondering if, from the behaviour above, if the problem with using KMS is due to an issue with the graphics card itself or if I should be trying to generate my own custom EDID file, which sounds painful . Passing the built-in resolution 1280x1024 via the drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware option, as suggested on the Wiki, made no difference in behaviour at all. Trying to pass 1024x768 in the same way did make snowy artefacts appear on the monitor, but didn't get me to a point where the system appeared any closer to actually booting up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I've currently got the X running fine using the VESA driver (no custom Xorg.conf file needed), but it's more than a little slow. I'd like to have 2D acceleration available at the very least.

Unfortunately it's a desktop with a flat-screen monitor; VGA cable connection. The only information on model that I have is from the monitors' configuration menu:  "Dell E248WFP".

  • Problems with kernel26 2.6.36.1-3, black screen on startup

EDIT I find the problem, it is no the xorg server or intel driver but the kernel! I modified the title of this topic and i ask the moderators if it is possible to move this thread to the right section! thanks
    Hi,
this night i have updated through pacman the xorg-server and the intel driver but now the system is not able to start.
    In particular the package are:
    xf86-video-intel    2.13.0-4
    xorg-server 1.9.2-2
but the system was able to start in fallback mode, so i decided to downgrade the driver intel with the 2.12.0-3 version...Now the system won't start. I also tried to downgrade the xorg-server to the previous version but the situation doesn t change..
How can I find out the problem?
    Thanks.

Thanx for the reply..i've updated other packages but unfortunatly i don't remember the names, there is a method to find out the last updated packages?
I take a look at xorg log file but there is only one old error for the synaptic touchpad (always had).
in the dmesg i don t see anything strange. When i start the system i see a completely black screen.
for completeness i try to post the logs file:

  • IMac 27 Late 2009 with Random black screen at startup of Windows 7!

Hi, I'll try to explain the my random black screen issue as best I can.
I have a boot camp partition with Windows 7 x64 Ultimate installed.
I used the USB method to install, all goes well and Windows 7 gets installed, I update drivers, install boot camp etc. all is good, right!
My problem is that everything seems to be in working order, but the built in LED screen will only get lit/active in 1 out of 5 times at startup of Windows, eg. the built in screen stays black/off (black screen issue), like the install issue on iMac 27 I7 w/ATI 4850.
NOTE! When booting OS X the built in LED screen gets lit/active on every startup.
So what I did was connect a second LCD monitor via Display port to DVI, this monitor/screen has no issues, it gets lit/active on every startup of Windows, even if the built in screen/monitor stays black/off (black screen issue).
NOTE! I have tested both the latest drivers from Apple (10.4 19/MAR/2010, found on the USB install method) and AMD ATI Catalyst Driver (10.8 25/AUG/2010). The issue remains on both Apple released drivers and AMD ATI released drives.
    1. So to me it seems like there are some detection/communication issues between the built in monitor and the video card on Windows 7, as there is no issue detecting and activating a monitor connected to the display port.
Are we missing a monitor driver in Windows that OS X has, or is this a hardware issue that Apple knows about and compensates for in OS X with on load firmware, driver or a kernel fix?
    2. Does anyone else have this issue on their 27" iMac Late 2009 I7, ATI HD 4850 machine?
If yes, did you manage to solve it?
Thanks for any help on this issue.
    Cheers,
    Kevin

Hi, I've seem to have found out the source of the problem.
The issue is related to heat, and an iMac 27" gets hot pretty fast.
If I boot the iMac straight after first start into Windows 7 I seem to get a lit built-in display at all times. I can also boot OS X first and then into Windows 7 and the built-in screen get lit every time as long as the iMac isn't hot.
Strange thing is that the monitor connected to the display port gets lit every time. So I can only assume that the heat only interfere with output to the built-in LED screen.
So this iMac is going to an Apple premium reseller for service, and I'll tell you guys how it went.

  • T60p Black screen on startup

Hello, I was updating the driver for the video card (ATI Mobility FireGL V5250/Windows XP) when the screen went black and the computer froze. I had to restart but when I turned the computer on the screen went black and I heard 3 beeps (long - short - short). I tried to hook it up to a external monitor, but with no success. Can someone help me?

Beeps at start up are a bad sign sometimes.
From my experience with desktops they mean something particular about the motherboard and some bad equipment or the motherboard itself.
When you are updating drivers for GFX cards, it is many times normal to have black screen or flashings etc.
You should never stop the PC and let it do its work. Even if waiting for some time.
Try make a google search for the beeps?

  • FF 8 short black screen during startup

Not a big deal but a black screen and then inverted (negative) image appears when I start Firefox. This happens very fast, in less than half a second but it is noticeable and I haven't seen it before with previous versions. Is there any fix for this? Thanks!

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.
