Update to 10.9.3 hangs

I updated to OS 10.9.3 and it asked me to restart. It went into software update launcher mode and just hangs there for hours. Any idea whats happening?

I had same issue and multiple times it stopped at the software update launcher. I tried many updates to 10.9.3 via App Store and Combo updater. The restart then stopped at the software update launcher. I tried just "return" and Apple menu, logout and return but neither continued to actually do the uodate.
The solution came from the below 10.5 upgrade fix article - delete all the /Library/Updates files
http://appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/19/apple_details_fix_for_hanging_software _update_installs
"To resolve the issue, Apple recommends that you quit Software Update and then navigate to the directory on your hardware where the contents of pre-installed software updates reside. To get there, select "Go to Folder" from the Go menu in the Finder and type in "/Library/Updates" without the quotes, then click Go."
After I deleted the /Library/Updates and re-updated via App Store, the 10.9.3 update downloaded again and restarted perfectly.
The haning software update launcher issue seems to have been caused by a corrupt or incomplete download of 10.9.3. Simply deleting the /Library/Updates files allowed the update to continue and restarted correctly.
After many times updating and restaring for this issue many times, I thought I'd update this thread with what precisely fixed the issue for me.

  • PS CC (since JAN 2014 update) Layer-mask editing causes hangs/crashes

ONLY since JAN 2014 update, PS CC has been hanging/crashing when I paint/edit a layer mask. All may be well at first (or not), but suddenly the display of the mask (or mask overlay on the layer itself, as shown when hitting backslash key) is not shown in full but renders in s-l-o-w-l-y in rectilinear pieces <snapshot below was taken before video card upgraded but is still typical of what I mean>. When I view Windows' Task Manager for PS, I see my CPUs are each working at their upper limits (up to 80+-90+%), varying only by a few points, over a VERY long time... which could be MANY minutes. OR the System has decided PS is Not Responding.
In any case, whenever this happens, it means in all practicality PS CC is not working, so I either kill it or it's crashed.
Now, here's the thing: that VERY file, can immediately be opened in PS CS6 (which I have fortunately kept installed on my computer), and the mask will be as I thought it should be, and I can edit it as I always could, just fine! So it's obviously a PS CC thing, and I do NOT recall this happening prior to the JAN update. It is still a problem after the two subsequent updates.
I have not been able to determine the specific instances when this happens, as it seems to happen whenever I am editing a mask, no matter what size/softness/color brush, what magnification, what view mode, many or few layers, big or small file, etc.
I did upgrade my NVIDIA card (from GeForce GTX 260 [with current driver] to GTX660), just in case it was a factor (maybe kept it from crashing as fast? hard to tell... but it's still an unworkable problem). You can see from my Sys Info shown here from the PS CC Help menu  that it should be more than sufficient for any PS CC task, and it's running the latest driver:

I work on digital-photography files, and use a layer mask in almost every file, so this relatively-recent bug is a big PITA, having to switch back and forth between CS6 and CC!
Until there's a fix... is there a way to roll-back my PS CC version to BEFORE the JAN 15, 2014 update?

I am not qualified to comment on technical issues; I'm just a user whose son in IT is my 'technical support department.' (But he's not much of a PS user.)
I'm pretty sure, however, that all my Prefs were set to the same things BEFORE the Jan 16, 2014 PS CC update as after (unless the update itself changed something I was unaware of... the settings APPEARED to be the same but I can't easily locate my notes of what my Prefs were from long ago).
And they were the same as the PS CS6 I have had installed on this same system for a very long time, with older video card with older driver, with newer driver; newer video card with newest driver, etc. Yet after that CC update, CC has not (until this workaround) worked re 'the masking bug' for me, yet CS6 has always worked just the same.
So I conclude that the only variable (other than the video card upgrade I did in an attempt to solve this and of course those Windows auto-updates) in this scenario IS something to do with PS *CC*, and after Jan 16, 2014.
As for restarting the machine vs. restarting PS, well, PS is the major player of my system, so when I shut that (and LR) down, I might as well 'clean things up' by Restarting. BTW, I am in the habit of closing and reopening PS (CC or CS6) whenever I finish with a file and load another, in order to get back some of that memory which PS never seems to want to let go. (This is not new to the latest versions, I think. My son says it's a 'memory hog'? ;-) ) I track its memory use in Windows' Task Manager and find that seems to let it 'refresh' itself. (See, I told you I'm not a technical person. ;-) ) But I do not think this has anything to do with the bug. Just a quirk of PS. Like when a tool goes all wonky (for example, its little icon becomes just a 'plus' sign even though the tool is still performing correctly, it's telling me, I think, that it would like to be restarted. And that makes it feel all better... I mean, tool icon reappears.)
Anyway... it's up to Adobe to figure out IF and what may be wrong with PS CC -- it still doesn't work for me as I had it configured at first, and I think it should, right? -- and to fix that... PLEASE. SOON.

  • Mac OS X update to 10.6.7 hangs finder - error message 10810

Every time I apply the Combined update 10.6.7 my mac mini's finder hangs and I get an error message 10810. I've followed a few suggestions, repaired the disk, pram test, re-built the launch services and followed the suggestions in this article http:/http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10365239-263.html. Nothing works
Have to to re-install back to snow leopard 10.6 every time and everything works fine.
    Any help would much appreciated.

You could make a bootable backup/clone of your current installation (eliminating the need to reinstall) using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!; then, manually download incremental updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/, updating the backup/clone until you uncover the one mucking things up for you.

  • Firefox tells me to update to 10.0.1, but also tells me my AVG security won't work with update. What do I do for security? I'd skip update, but I already have hang problems, which always seems to happen if I don't update to current level.

I want to update, but not lose the security I have and like.
A catch-22 here: Update to avoid hang-time problems and loose my security that I'm comfortable with OR keep my AVG security and put up with "Mozilla not responding" hang time frustration.

The only item you'll lose is AVG Safe Search" which is incompatible with FF 10. All other functions of AVG are still valid and your computer is still protected. I have disabled AVG Safe Search for a long time now and have no problem whatsoever. You just have to be careful with what links do you click when you are on line. I don't know if AVG is going to fix this problem anytime soon since FF 10 has been out for a while and nothing has been done by AVG yet.

  • After recent Iweb 09 update, when publishing site Iweb hangs

    Hi,
After I did an Iweb update this week, I cannot publish my website anymore. The application hangs and has to be force quitted... I tried waiting for many minutes, without success. The Imac account is active and I can logon ok. I also updated my password yesterday via the web. This could be the reason as well. Still, the application should not hang.
    Please help.
    Kind regards,
    Remco

You don't state were you are publishing to - MobileMe or another server?
Have a look at the troubleshooting section on this page and the bit about deciding whether your problem is with publishing or if it exists in iWeb.

Trying to update Server to version 4.0.3 on Mac Mini running 10.10.1.  Breezes through most of the update but hangs on "Updating Calendar Service", left running overnight, no change.  Force Quit, restarted computer and retried update, but the same issue occurred.  I don't even use the Calendar Service, not sure how to move forward with this.

    Hi
You may find following the steps outlined in the 'answer' on this thread helps fix your problem.
    Hope it helps.

  • Is there a known problem with the new FF update? My computer keeps hanging and I am having to either force quit or power computer off.

This is been happening every time I use FF since update.
I have a Mac and have never had any problems like this.
Does not happen when use Safari Browser.

Here are two screen shots to show you what I am seeing.  The first screen shot shows it allowing me to select (highlighted in blue) my admin user (which is what I am locced in as).  The second screen shot shows it allowing me to select the "Guest" user (highlighted in blue).  However when I click on the user "Orion" nothing happens.  It will not change to highlight that user.

I get the message "Error Writing to the temporary location".
Can't get around it and I'm sitting here with a new Sony Nex which needs the 3.41 update.
    Any suggestions?
I've tried changing the temp folder location.  That didn't help, even if I just indicated the Desktop.

Did you try to run the installer as Administrator?
You can run Setup64 directly, right click and select run as Admin ..

  • Software Updates in DMZ BITS download hangs

    Hi guys,
i am running into a strange problem when deploying software updates to a DMZ system without internet access.
Here are some facts about the environment:
    1 Primary Site: W2k8 R2 / SCCM 2012
1 DMZ system (mgmt Point, sup, dp)  W2k8R2 (SQL replication, manual wsus replication) SSL Must be used
The DMZ mgmt Point is not able to download Software Updates. They are listed in the Software Center but they persist with downloading at 0%. Application packages are working fine. Just the SW Update get stuck.
The Boundaries are OK, there are no "IIS request filtering files" inside the updates (e.g just scep definitions), the DP ist up to date, iis bindings are correct (if i install the client certificate in the internet explorer i am able to access the DP.
I already reinstalled the client and created new deployments.
It would be really great if you have some ideas what the problem could be?
Here are some parts of the logs:
it is very strange that "internetproxy.log" looks for a proxy even if the server is the DP itself.

thank you very much for your help!!
    best regards
    Philipp

    Hi Philipp,
I am having this same problem...software updates are stuck at downloading 0% for "internet" DMZ/Workgroup SCCM 2012 clients that communicate with DP/MP in an untrusted forest (no internet access). Normal software packages/programs/task sequences can
    download and install successfully.
SCCM 2012 SP1 with CU1 running on Windows Server 2012 on all site servers and site system servers. SQL 2012 SP1 on site servers. Clients using PKI certs. MP and DP using HTTPS with PKI certs.
Similarities are that there is a 207 in the IIS log file when the client attempts to download the update. The rest of the logs aren't very useful because they just stop logging and the client sits in a "downloading 0%" state.
Did you ever resolve the problem? Is anyone else having this problem?
Thanks, appreciate any help I can get.

  • Since update, Safari 5.1 occasionally hangs.  Ideas?

Updated Safari a few weeks back, and since then I get the beachball freeze when loading: first just a few specific pages many times, but more often now with different pages.
    Running SL 10.6.8.
Any basic Safari hygiene I should be performing?

You may have a Safari third party plugin installed that was compatible with the prior version of Safari but not 5.1.
Troubleshooting help here >  Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
Empty the Safari cache more often. From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.

  • Why doesn't the auto update to my Firefox always hang up when it is checking compatiblily with my addons?

Towards the end of an automatic Firefox update, the program opens a dialogue box that says it's checking compatibility of the new version with my addons. It also mentions that I should be patient, that the process could take several minutes. The process continues without normal termination, and I have to use Windows Task Manager to stop it. I've let it run form as long as 35 minutes, but it never completes the process. This has happened for each of the last 3 or 4 auto updates. What's going on?

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the ''Mozilla'' folder, then double-click on ''Firefox'' and then on ''Crash reports''. Double-click on ''submitted''.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to ''View'' > ''Arrange Icons by'' > ''Modified'' to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with '''bp-''' into the reply window on the forums.
    Thanks in advance!
You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the [[Firefox crashes]] article.

  • Z10 OS Update 10.0.10.82 Hanging

I've started the update on a Wifi link and it went to 100% but now it does nothing.
    Cannot even cancel the update.
    Restarting does nothing.
How can I perform this though BlackBerry Link?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Make sure your Blackberry ID is working properly. If it is not updates will not complete.
It is best to do major updates being connected to a charger or the computer USB. Downloads should work well using WiFi to save data cost.
