Update to InDesign CS4
Hi,
I have CS2 and have been having some problems with files corrupting and then losing format during page imposition with InBooklet. I read the preference changing and file clean-up articles. But have been wondering about what I would need to do to do page imposition for my manuals if I upgrade.
Also, I have Photoshop CS3. Is that the one I use to upgrade from? How do I do this, please?

InBooklet SE was known to be buggy, particularly if you used it to save an imposed file. Quark purchsed ALAP, the vendor for InBooklet, and took it off the market, and it was replaced in newer versions with Print Booklet, which works quite well but cannot save an imposed file. The usual workaround is to print to PDF and use that if you need a file for manual duplexing. There are alos scripts that work well for simple impostions.
Is your CS2 a standalone or a suite product? YOu can only upgrade a suite to another suite, not individual components. I think you can still get a suite upgrade package from either ID CS2 (or just an ID upgrade) or Photoshop.

That helped. Now I am stuck on the next thing. It updates the broken link, but gives me an error when link is good. So I am trying to figure out an IF statement, so it only updates broken links. Here what I've tried and none of it works:

InDesign CS4 won't open at all! I'm doomed!
What happened? I've been using InDesign CS4 (bought the master collection) since March on my brand new MacBook Pro (2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3) just fine...the other adobe updater ran and now..nothing. I click on the app and nothing happens. Notning at all. No dialog box, no nothing. I rebooted my Mac and now my InDesign files that were on my desktop don't even have the purple InDesign thumbs/icons anymore. I see in my InDesign folder that the app is there (304MB) and but now there's another InDesignCS4 app (112mb) yet it doesn't have the purple folder icon...it looks more like a text edit doc or an incomplete file or something.
I tried adobe updater again, to see if was an incomplete update, and it shows no updates for InDesign. Some other apps don't open anymore either, like After Effects, but Photoshop Extended, and Flash do open up.
What's going on!? I have a big meeting tomoorow and I'm up a creek without InDesign.
Again, all was fine two days ago. The updater ran on the 16th...

I installed this at work, and the disks are are there, so I was trying to get it up and running before the AM.
A couple of things I've found:
1. A while back, I shortened the name of the app to InDesign CS4 (as opposed to "Adobe InDesign CS4" I took off the "Adobe" in front of it so it would be shorter in the dock.) I'm wondering if the updater was looking for the exact match, which is whay I got a SECOND "Adobe InDesign CS4" app in my folder that was only 114mb as oppsed to the full 300mb...Funny, I did that same thing with After Effects (removed the "Adobe" in front of the name) and it's doing the same thing (not supported). All other apps in the Master Collection that might have been updated two days ago are fine. Do you think the updater is that picky, and it installed the update as a seperate, unusable file? I trashed the smaller, newer (the one I got when I updated) Adobe InDesign CS4 in hopes that the old full app would open up as it did before and re-update. That's when I got the "not supported" message.
Before I trashed the "smaller" app, nothing was happening at all when I tried to lauch either. At least now I'm getting the "Not supported" thing.
2. I found a crash report in my app support folder:

Can not open an indesign cs4 file, made by a testversion.

the failure notice is about updating add ons. Now I got them all, but it does'nt work either. Does this problem sound familiar to anyone or is there a pro who can help?The exact error is (in german):

I try to translate:
"...indd" can not be opened. Update your additional tools on the actual (new) version or update on the actual (new) version of Adobe InDesign.
I use the computers in my university, so I do'nt have any rights to update. But earlier this day I asked one of the admins and he updated his own pc (which has got the same version and updates of InDesign CS4). It did'nt work either and it was the same error. -
I just installed the 6.0.5 update for InDesign CS4. Now I cannot open the program. I get an error message InDesign quit unexpectedly.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am having the same problem. My InDesign CS4 was fine for months, no problems, until I got a software update available message and I downloaded the update and installed it. After the install I restarted the computer. Since then I can not open InDesign CS4 - it crashes on startup. I have no problem with my CS3 opening. My software is CS4 Design Premium. My computer is a MAC G5 running 10.4.11.

I'm unable to reinstall InDesign CS4 which was bought as an update of an old InDesign CS2. I have the serial number of CS4 but I have lost the S/N of CS2 which is required.

Thanks a lot for your answer. In fact, I’ve really registered CS2 in 2002 (october 14th). But I guess that, at this time, my email address was [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> which is no more presently usable.
So, when the installation program of CS4 requires the S/N of CS2 (because my CS4 was an update of a preceding CS2, I’ve an answer (1037-0225-5711-8675-6584-4525) but this answer is not considered as correct by the program.
I guess this change of mail adress is the reason why I don’t find, on my personal file on Adobe, any information about Indesign CS4 (S/N : 1037-0005-3808-1893-0944-6511) nor PhotoShop CS5 (S/N : 1330-0000-7535-1483-5980-1567).

Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy CS4 or when I update an InCopy File
Indesign CS4 freezes when I export to InCopy or when I update an InCopy CS4 File. I have done some of the troubleshooting steps already and have already re-installed and re-updated through Adobe Updater. But the problem still exists. Anyone have any patches or fixes? Or have had the same issue and fixed it?
I'm working on a Power Mac G5 with OSX version 10.4.11I am having the same issue with Flash CS4. Did you find a solution?

Missing fonts in InDesign CS4 - even when 'open' in Suitcase Fusion 3
Hi all, I'm running InDesign CS4 on a Intel Mac Pro (tower), about 4 years old, running OSX Snow Leopard (all updates applied).
Using Suitcase Fusion V3 for font management.
I have a document that previously had no font issues at all. Now when I open it InDesign throws up a 'Missing font' error.
I have the correct fonts installed and 'open' in Suitcase Fusion.
The font is available in Simpletext and Pages, but not InDesign and Illustrator.
The troublesome font was OK the other day and has been since it was installed.
I've not changed anything that I'm aware of... but now InDesign won't 'see' the font.
In the 'Find Font' dialogue box the 'Path' says it's 'Unkown or missing'.
InDesign can see the other weights in the font family (bold, italic etc) but not regular. And yet the entire font family is in the same folder on my hard drive.
I've tried deleting all the' Adobe.lst' files. No Joy.
I've run Font Doctor on the whole font family, its says it's OK.
I've tried re-installing the font from a back-up. Nada.
If anyone has any suggestions..... feel free to let rip!
As ever, I await your expertise and unstinting knowledge in these matters And, needless to say, I'll be mighty appreciative for it!
RPHi Bob, strangely... I've put the troublesome font, Dax (T1) Regular, in the Applications/Adobe InDesign CS4/Fonts folder and it seems to be working.
Never had to do that before.
Would be great to get back to 'normal'. If possible.
Although I have many duplicates spread across back-up drives and collected artwork folders, I've also tried to eliminate any duplicate 'open' versions. But the above solution is the only one that works at the moment.

Kuler no longer working in InDesign CS4
Hi
I've been googling this a lot but haven't found a (working) solution yet. I did find a link to what could be a solution, but the link is not working anymore.
I'm an IT guy in an office where we have a small team of four people using Adobe Creative Suite 4. Recently they contacted me asking for help because Kuler was no longer working for them (it stopped working for all four).
I installed InDesign CS4 on my own machine only to see that it does not work for me either. The error message is "No internet connection detected. Your computer must be online in order to search or access kuler themes".
When I go to Windows -> Extensions -> Connections I'm able to login, but not able to search for updates, I just get "The update server is unavailable".
When running the Kuler Air app I just get "kuler klash, please try again later".
Because we're a big company we do of course have antivirus and firewalls. To make sure that the problem isn't because of this I installed InDesign on a machine (server) on a completely different network with less strict firewall and no antivirus on the machine, but It's just the same error message as before.
Our machines are running Windows 7 Enterprise (the extra test was done on a Windows 2012 Server).
Is Kuler just not working for CS4 anymore?
Looking forward to a clarification on this problem.The Kuler team recently rebuilt the backend of the Kuler service for security, maintenance, and peformance reasons. (the old back-end was showing signs of failure).
Anyway, it seems the new backend is not working with old Kuler APIs (CS3, CS4, and the air app and mac widget). Adobe typically provides support for up to two versions back. At the moment, that's CS5 or newer. So, I'm afraid it's not likely that you can expect a fix for CS4.
At this point, your team can use the web application to browse, create, and search themes. They can also download themes as ASE files (on the website) to import into InDesign CS4. -
Indesign CS4 Crashes When Importing Another Indesign CS4 File
Help! Every time I try to import an Indesign file into another Indesign file, my Indesign crashes. Also happens when I try to open an existing Indesign file that has files already imported into it. This is a problem because I have existing files I need to work on that I cannot open now!
I'm running CS4 on a new iMac running Lion 10.7.3. Everything is updated and current. My problem started when I transferred all my files via firewire from my previous iMac running 10.6. However, another iMac in the office running exactly the same thing is NOT having this same problem. So it's definitely something with my Mac, but I can't figure out what.
I have tried restoring the Indesign preferences by holding down all the Control, Shift, Option & Command keys. I have also re-installed Indesign CS4 from the original CD.
Ideas? Thanks!In case anyone comes across this problem, I think I've found a solution. Seems that Extensis Suitcase Fusion 2 was causing the problem. Extensis says Fusion 2 is not compatible with Lion. However, when I upgraded to Suitcase Fusion 3, I was still have the problem, though not as often. After contacting Extensis again, they told me:
This is a known issue with Suitcase Fusion 3. I can tell you a workaround and I have passed your information onto the developers so you're notified about a fix.
Here's the workaround: You need to uncheck activate fonts in embedded objects in your Suitcase Fusion 3 InDesign preferences. Here's how you do that:
1) Open InDesign by itself (no documents)
2) Go to the “Type” menu
3) Go down to “Suitcase Fusion 3” (it should show up at the bottom of the Type menu)
4) Choose “Suitcase Fusion 3 Auto-Activation Preferences…”
5) Uncheck Activate fonts in embedded objects
6) Load your document.

My copy of Adobe InDesign cs4 will not open a regular idml file.
I opened my document, and all it said was "cannot open the file "Tightsketch_charrette2.idml". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application" I tried opening other idmls that I knew were not corrupted and I recieved the same message. I checked the plugins, they are all enabled. I quit all other programs, no luck. I restarted the macbook, no luck again. Could I recieve some help? My Indesign cs4 is fully updated and Im having all these problems.
I have good news, and bad news.
The good news is that the file opens correctly here in both CS5.5 and CS4. The bad news is that means there's a problem with your CS4.
I would start out by trashing your preferences. It's fast, easy to do, and not overly destructive, and if you are lucky it will even solve the problem, but I wouldn't put the odds of success at more than 50/50. See Replace Your Preferences
Do you have a Time Machine backup? If you do, the next thing I would try is restoring the InDesign application folder from a time before the problem started.
If all else fails, it's probably time to bite the bullet and break out the installer. First try running a "repair" install on top of what's there. If that, too, fails, then I would uninstall CS4, run the CS5 clean tool (which can also clean up CS4 -- see Resolve installation problems with CS5 Cleaner Tool), then restart the computer and reinstall. If you have any customized stuff you should make copies of things like shorcut sets and workspaces that you can put back as explained in the thread on resetting the prefs. -

I am using Indesign CS4 in Mac OS X 10.6.2. I have done all the latest updates to Indesign.
I was trying to open and old .pmd Page Maker file that was created in a Windows version of Page Maker. I am not sure what version they were saved in. The file was created in July of 2006 if that helps.
Is there a way to open this file. I also have a pdf that I created from this file. I have Acrobat CS4 Is there a way to export the pdf back to an Indesign file. It's been a long time since I was up to speed on PageMaker. The pmd file extension refers to Pagemaker 5, right? InDesign should be able to import the output of PM 6.5 and PM 7, but I've found that the PM6.5 import is usually pretty decent, while for some reason the PM7 import is flaky. This probably is a result of changes in the way the documents were build by the, ah, "designers," and has comparatively little to do with the abilities of ID to open PM files of various versions. PM5, however, can't be imported by InDesign, I think.
What happens when you try to open them? Does InDesign crash, or does it fail without an error message, or ??? More details, please.

Well, there's always the PDF2ID tool, but since PDF is an uneditable container format, the results of running a PDF through PDF2ID is not reliable. Sometimes you get something very much like the source document, but I've found that most often it is faster to rebuild from scratch. I didn't buy PDF2ID, but that is because my clients' bizarro formatting techniques break on conversion. A very simple document might come back a lot cleaner.
