Update to iOS 5.0 fails repeatedly, why?

The error message says "network connection timed out" when it hasn't. it always stops after 668.7 of the 668.8 download. I have tried on different network (although on the same lap top)

Disable Firewall and Anti-Virus
This is often the simplest solution and this is what you should try first. Temporarily disabling your antivirus software and firewalls often works to cease the network time outs. I can’t give specific instructions for this because there are so many different types of antivirus and firewalls out there, but it’s usually just a matter of finding the program in question and disabling it. Obviously, once the iOS update has been run successfully, you’ll want to re-enable the firewall or antivirus.
Uninstall and Re-install iTunes
This seems to be more effective for Windows users, but sometimes just uninstalling iTunes and re-installing the latest version is enough to resolve network connection errors.
Flush DNS Cache
Sometimes flushing your DNS cache is enough to resolve the network time outs, here is how to do this for Mac OS X and Windows:
Flushing DNS Cache in Mac OS X
We’ve covered this before but here’s a reminder:
Launch the Terminal from /Applications/Utilities
At the command prompt, type in “dscacheutil -flushcache” and hit return
After the command has executed, you can exit Terminal and your DNS has been flushed
This works in Mac OS X 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6 or later.Flushing DNS Cache in Windows XP, Vista, and 7
Go to the Start menu and click on “Run”
In the “Run” box, type in ‘command.com’
When the DOS prompt appears, type in ‘ipconfig /flushdns’ and hit return
If the command has run properly, you’ll see a message saying DNS Resolving Cache has been flushed
You can now close the command.com prompt window
Note: if you encounter an error in Windows saying you do not have permissions or need authentication, make sure you run command.com as an Administrative user. You can do this by right-clicking on Run and selecting “Run as Administrator.”
Manually Download the iOS Update
If you’re having problems downloading the update file (IPSW), you can actually download these directly from Apple rather than through iTunes. This is recommended more for advanced users since there are so many versions of iOS and firmware available, but here are the repository links:
iPhone Firmware IPSW file downloads
iPad Firmware & IPSW file downloads
iPod Touch Firmware & IPSW file downloads
If you go this route, here is where the IPSW files are stored locally on your machine:
IPSW location in Mac OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
IPSW location in Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
IPSW location in Windows Vista & Windows 7: \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
This is where a corrupt or half-downloaded IPSW file will sit too, but you should backup the existing IPSW file before overwriting it with a new version just in case.

  • HT4623 update process fails with the following message "Unable to Verify Update.  iOS 6.1 failed verification because you are no longer connected Internet."

my iphone 5 is connected to a wi-fi network and i'm able to browse the web and receive emails.  however when i try to update the software the process fails with the following message "Unable to Verify Update.  iOS 6.1 failed verification because you are no longer connected Internet." It gives an open to "Close" or "Try again", but the retry is also unsuccessful.

Try to connect to secure web site. If you can't, that would mean that your iphone is unable to authenticate itself to apple servers in order to download update. If you can - I would still guess same but with less certainty and suggest to update on another network.

  • Just tried update to iOS 7.1.2. Why has do I get a "replacement needed message"?

As directed, I just tried updating to iOS 7.1.2 on Ipad. Went through process and then was told to restore system. Now it says "Replacement needed".   Why?

    Hi Bob,
I have an iPad 2 (3rd Generation).  It has a camera and does not have a retina screen.  It was not until yesterday that my iPad informed me that an upgrade (IOS 7.0.2 was available for downloadeven though the upgrade has been available for over several wweks.  I  have been reading this thread and the earlier thread you recommended and  have been putting off the upgrade until the replacement issue was resolved.  Since there really has been not new updates to this tread, I am assuming nothing has happened.  Although I feel bad for other members of this forum, my iPad is working perfectly well and I do not want to do anything to jeopardize that.  But I have read that "earlier thread" a number of times and the one contribution that could change my mind regarding doing the upgrade is: youse123 May 6, 2014 6:02 AM in response to kger
I have been in regular contact with AppleCare who are very helpful. The issue has been escalated to the iOS Engineers (in Australia) and they said the issue is affecting some cellular iPad 2's (WiFi only iPad 2's should not be affected), and is definitely a server backend configuration problem with the cellular connections.
My iPad is a wifi only.  Have you heard of any wifi only iPads experiencing an issue with the IOS 7.1.2 upgrade?

  • Updating to iOS 4.1 Fail

When I try to update my iPod touch 2nd gen with iOS 3 to iOS 4.1 everything proceeds normally until iTunes is backing up my iPod. Then the load bar stops indefinitely and I eventually have to canel the update. I've let it go on overnight before too, so I know it's not just taking a really long time. Please help!

    Welcome to the forum, hirschman23.
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPod touch to turn off.
    * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the touch. When you reconnect the USB cable to the touch, the device should power on.
Note: If you see an image of an empty battery with socket to lightening bolt symbol, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When a screen with a Usb cord pointing the iTunes symbol appears you can release the Home button.
    5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see alert text: "iTunes has detected an touch in recovery mode..."
    6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495] and its related links.
    Hope this solves your problem.

I was having the same problem, I went to the "Apple Store" and a tech guy told me to back up everything on iTunes, and then load as a new phone.... Safari then worked... I then had to tell iTunes to reload all the apps and stuff on the new install... Don't know if this will help you, but I was having exactly the same problem with my Lotus notes webmail server.....
    Worked for me.

  • PC no longer recognises my iPhone after trying to update to iOS 5...Help!?!?

When returning from popping out of the house, as the Back UP and Update was taking forever, I came home to find that my iPhone has updated to iOS 5 but failed to Restore itself.  On top of this my PC no longer recognises my iPhone and issues a message 'USB Device Not Recognized'.  Now I have tried several attempts at fixing this, reinstalling iTunes, disabling and re-enabling USB Drives but nothing seems to work.  So I am now left with an empty phone, no contacts nothing, which can't even connect to my PC.
    Any Ideas???????????????????

I had the same problem, I shut down the computer, disconnected it, etc... nothing helped. I went to the Apple store and they fixed it by restoring my phone to factory defaults and then updating. When I got home I connected to Itunes and it synched all my information back to the phone. If you have synched your information to Icloud you have to do it there!

  • Why do my attempts to update my iPhone 5 to iOS 7.0.6 repeatedly fail?

I recently downloaded the iOS 7.0.6 software update to my iPad and my wife's iPhone 5 without any difficulty at all.  However, when I try to update my own iPhone 5, I repeatedly get a "Software Update Failed...An error occurred downloading iOS 7.0.6" message.  Please help.  Thanks.

I reset my iPhone 5 but was still unable to download the iOS 7.0.6 software update.  If I were to install iTunes on my PC, as suggested above, what would I do after that?
As I mentioned previously, I was able to do the download directly onto another iPhone 5 and an iPad without any problem.  This, I find the whole thing kind if confusing.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.
Thanks very much for your feedback.

I've had a notification for days in my Creative Cloud application that there's an update to Premiere Pro (7.2.2), yet every time I try to download it, the update reaches 50-58% and then fails. Why? Is there a fix?

  • Why is Illustrator CC (2014) update failing repeatedly after downloading 100%?

I've been a member of CC for sometime 18 months and normally I have no trouble with updates.
However, this particular update to Illustrator CC fails repeatedly.
I've attempted this update and download more than 8 times.
It shows the download to be 100% complete and then "Update failed" shows up.
Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?
I've just migrated to a newish iMac, could this be a reason?

Have you uninstalled the old versions and used the Cleaner Tool before updating to the new version?
This procedure is recommended after updating Mac OS.

  • HT1339 I was looking for info on restoring an iPod Touch 4th Gen. But iTunes presents the same Restore button, which when pressed, offers to update, not restore, to iOS 6.0.1. Why?

I found this article when searching for info on restoring (to factory conditions) an iPod Touch 4th Generation. Now I thought this shipped with iOS 5.x (x unknown). But as mentioned too briefly in the header, when I click 'Restore' in iTunes, it offers not to restore, but to update. That is not what I want. I need to use this iPod Touch with Xcode 4.2 under Snow Leopard.
So the question is: what is really going on here and why? Is it really true that 4th G iPod Touches ship with 6.0.1 instead of 5.x? If not, how can I get it to really go back to the original? Why is iTunes failing to offer a restore when I press 'Restore'? If I guessed wrong about which of my several machines running iTunes (some under Windows7, one under Snow Leopard)I used when I upgraded to iOS 6.0.1, would that explain iTune's failure to offer a true Restore?

Restore will not replace an old iOS level. It will update the iOS level to the latest level. If you have to restore youre iPod that is what will happen. The iOS is not a part of a backup.
