Update to IOS5.1

I had the worst experience while updating my Iphone4 to IOS5.x
I had always been delaying this update decision, as I had a hunch that something unnecessarily wrong is going to happen - plus ofcourse I had an aversion to using archaic technologies requiring your devides to be 'connected' to different System having particular software (read Itunes) which will support the update process --- especially when most modern devices offer the update-on-the-fly option
Never the less - I connected my Iphone to my Windows Laptop with the latest version of ITunes downloaded specially for this purpose. I sync'ed my phone, downloaded the new IOS5.1.1 and clicked on the update option. I had already backed up my purchases and sync'ed the phone with the fear that incase something goes wrong - I'm covered. My System took 4 hrs to download the new IOS5.1 and finally said - yes: We're ready to update. While updating - everything seemed to be happening fine - My Iphone restarted and and there were messages on my Windows System stating that my system is ready to use. Then all of a sudden- I got an Error Message# 9 (Some thing to do with USB Port connection) and before I could do anything - the entire process turned wild. Itunes - simply said: there's no iphone detected to the PC and the my Iphone screen showed an image of a USB Cable and ITUnes logo. I tried connecting to a new USB port and Itunes responded that the Iphone has now gone to a 'Recovery mode' and I must click Restore to update to LATEST IOS software and my last synch'ed state.
I clicked on Restore and now my Itunes says - It needs another 4 hrs to download the IPhone Software update and then carry out the restore and update process again. This is so ridiculous - I just waited 4 hrs to download the update software.
Lesson learnt - never connect this iphone to a window's PC.
However - I am particularly worried about this Recover process now. Not only is my phone totally useless till my Windows PC RE-Downloads the new IOS and updates the Iphone (i.e. approx 4+1 = 5 hrs of downtime: i.e. 5 hours of no phone) also - I see a good possibility that this problem will recurr when I do the restore process. There is nothing wrong with my USB ports and my Windows PC - have had no trouble with these functions over the past 6 mths since I bought this machine.
My question - what can I do to safely restore my system back to normalcy.... Frankly i don't even care much about IOS5.... I just want the phone back in working order. 4 hours downtime - just because an update failed for whatever reason is RIDICULOUS, but more important question - how do i ensure that this doesnot happen again.
Another question - If iphone update software was just downloaded on my system, and the update process goes haywire - why does Itunes download the same software again.... why not simply use the earlier downloaded patch. Or is there something I'm doing terribly wrong
Question to the Apple Development/Product Management Community (i.e. if the thread is being monitored): When are we looking at an improvment in the IOS update process. Is there a cue to be learned from competitor products offering update on the fly option (I had a wonderful experience updating OS version of a competitor product to their latest 4.0.1 version - update to a completely new platform on the fly... I was so amazed with the entire effortless and seamless experience infact, that I vowed to update all my smart devices to latest versions......).

. Then all of a sudden- I got an Error Message# 9 (Some thing to do with USB Port connection)
ERROR 9:
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

the entire process turned wild. Itunes - simply said: there's no iphone detected to the PC and the my Iphone screen showed an image of a USB Cable and ITUnes logo.
In certain situations, an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will automatically go into recovery mode after an update or restore issue. If your device is already in recovery mode, you can attempt to restore using iTunes.

Your phone is already in recovery mode. All of your data is backed up in iTunes. Proceed with the restore as mentioned in the article.

  • Trying to install iTunes 10.5 but wont install and it just seems to hang for several hours and do nothing.  Need help cos otherwise I cant update to iOS5 on my Iphone 4.  Thx

I have tried many times today to install iTunes 10.5 in order to update to iOS5 on my Iphone 4 however it just wont work.  I have a MacBook Pro and when I use the software update it says that I have already downloaded iTunes 10.5 but when I go to install it and it says it is writing the files and the bluw bar is working its way across the page and then becomes very very slow and and at the last millimetre it seems to just hang there and do nothing.  I even left if like this for several hours and nothing progressed.  I have since tried to update via the iTunes program and the same problem happens.  Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rick,
by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.
    Success,
    Peter

Since updating to IOS5 my voice memos won't sync from iPhone4 to iTunes (macbook). They show in my iTunes but are grey so can't click on them. I need to put voice memos on a CD. Can someone help please?

First of all what PC type do you have, then what IOS are you running and finally what  Itunes are you running.
Oh and if this helps, check it out how to upload voice memos from iphone to iMac.

  • My iphone3gs was prompted to update to ios5. It gets almost to the end of the update then gives me error 1. I can't use my phone at all. I've tried to restore it but nothing. I've taken it into an electronic shop in which they tried to update and couldn't

I've looked on-line and it seems that many people are having the same problems. No, it's not my Internet connection or my computer. This is a software problem as my phone was working fine before it made me update and I've heard the same story over and over again. The update to ios5 messed up my phone. Now Apple should fix it. I can't restore my phone, just gets to the end then quits. It says " iTunes recognizes a phone in recovery mode" so it is being detected. I've tried this on many different computers, at different locations, through a wireless connection and connected directly. Please fix. This happened in Oct or Nov, 2011 when the ios5 update came out.

Sounds like your phone was previously jailbroken.

  • When I try to update to iOS5, iTunes gets stuck on "Backing Up" its been there for hours and it barely moves

When I try to update to iOS5, iTunes gets stuck on "Backing Up" its been there for hours and it barely moves. It finished backing up one then it went to a "Extracting Software" on the iTunes status bar up top and then it gave me an error saying something along the lines of "There was an error with the server" and back to square 1. Ive been trying since the morning and same problem. Always stuck on the backup, help?

You may have lost your connection to the apple server or connection with your itunes library.
    1) You will need to shutdown Itunes and disconnect your iphone from the USB cable.
    2) Reconnect your Iphone to the usb cable, wait for the device to be recognised and or drivers to be installed.
    3) once all ok, your itunes should automatically open up/connect (if you have this setting set on), otherwise double click your itunes icon on your desktop.
    4) once all sychronised and connected. go to Summary tab and UPDATE your iphone again.
Hope this works for you, as this happend to me and tried the above steps and wala!!! all good.
If the above still fails, restart your pc/apple and turn off/on your modem and then try again.
this normally happens if your connection from your device to the itunes hangs or looses its connection, or have a bad connection to the internet / apple server.
in windows the RPC Locator is normally the cause of this, in apple i have no idea (as im not an apply user).
    Give it a shot!
if this helps you and works ...why not rep/like my response up!

Have you tried doing a Restore?
For some problems the solution is to download & reinstall iTunes.

  • Before I updated to ios5 there was a "number" on the task bar next to bookmarks showing all the windows I like to keep open. Now I can't find the setting to go back to that feature. Help!! I just want to be able to click on the number to get to my windows

Before I updated to ios5  there was a number lit up on the task bar (next to bookmarks) which were all the windows I like to keep open. Now, after updating I can't find that feature in settings. I don't like all the different tabs along the top. Can anyone help me please?? I just want to click on the number and have all of my open windows there!

I don't think that is an option. iOS 5 new features is tabbed browsing, it replaced the old window interface.

  • When updating to IOS5 restore did not complete and now it is asking for a password to carry on restoring back up and I can't remember password! Would appreciate any help?

Whilst updating to IOS5 on my iphone 4 it was interrupted whilst restoring the contents of my iphone!!!  Now when I try and restore it asks for a password to unlock my iphone backups - I have tried several but it states password is incorrect and accordingly I cannot restore backups and have lost loads of important information!!
I would really appreciate your suggestions on what to do.
    Many thanks

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

  • Since updating to iOS5 my iPad 2 will not sync

My iPad 2 will not be recognized by iTunes or my laptop after updating to iOS5 last night.  It worked fine in the past.  I have performed all the suggestions from apple and it still will not work.  Any ideas?

Griff W, If  Sassysoo7's problem is anything like mine (it sounds almost exactly like the problem I posted in my own thread a couple days ago except mine is iPad only; iPhone is fine) none of those articles/solutions/suggestions you and others have linked to will work; I've been trying them for days and nothing works. As said, I posted about this in my own thread and several others and nothing anyone has suggested has helped. I know my Apple ID and password are correct, they work everywhere else.
When is Apple going to acknowledge this bug/problem and fix it??

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer?  not good.
The ipod is not a backup device.
You can redownload itunes purchases.  Open itunes store, click Purchased, under Quick Links
You should always maintain a backup copy of your computer.

  • I have several very important school related documents on my iPad in the Pages app. Ever since i updated to iOS5, i can no longer open any documents in Pages that I made before I updated. Please help

I have several very important school related documents on my iPad in the Pages app. Ever since i updated to iOS5, i can no longer open any documents in Pages that I made before I updated. Please help

Without the iPad connected, open up iTunes on your computer.  Go to iTunes/Preferences/Devices and delete the backups that you're absolutely certain do not have the documents.  Refer to figure below.
iTunes, select the iPad and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "NO" to creating a backup.  (You don't want to create a new backup that does not have the docs.)  You will then be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad.  This time, say "yes."
Repeat all of the above as required until you get the docs.

When playing music on my iPod touch, if you rotate to cover flow ,music stops and the screen goes blank then back to home screen.

My iPod touch worked perfectly before update to iOS5.
I have the latest iTunes software on my iMac.

  • Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is trying to backup data from the iPhone.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support.  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my phone?

Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is backing up data from the iPhone before installing the new operating system.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support with no success.  I still get the error everytime (about 5 minutes into backing up iPhone data).  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my iPhone (the error message says that if I continue I will lose all data on the phone)?  If I have already synced the phone before upgrading the OS, would I be able to restore my data after installing the new OS by syncing after the OS upgrade is complete?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.

  • I can't update to iOS5

I keep getting message saying that iTunes can't update to iOS5 because applesoftwareupdate.msi cannot be found. I've tried extracting the files from iTunes setup using winRAR, but I'm still getting an error because the old applesoftwareupdate.msi cannot be uninstalled. I've even Tried using add/remove programs to remove it from my computer and then use the extracted file but it still can't be located. Previous threads have said to use Windows Startup Utility or something , but that is not available anymore. I am really frustrated and have had to use a different computer to connect my iPad to. My iPod is on the computer that won't update so my apps are not going to be able to be transferred to my iPad. HELP PLEASE!!

As for the file extracting, I meant to say that when I try to download the extracted applesoftwareupdate, it cannot be downloaded because the previous applesoftwareupdate cannot be located and uninstalled.

Correct. The 3G iPod does not have the hardware to support an iOS version higher than 5.1.1
To more easily find compatible apps:
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.
Starting when iOS 7 was releases, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
