Yes.... I know.... but then I would loose the ability to back the Iphone up, coordinate calendars, offload photos, etc... And yes... I know I can turn on Icloud and access the Icloud website... but that is also a major change in work flow... especially when I have 4TB of disk drive sitting right beside me.... Anyway you look at it, it is both time and money...
The big complication is that the G5 sits in the middle of a small business network. There are several IMacs (one G5 and Core 2 Duo's) assigned to others on the network as well. They have all been held at OSX 10.5.8 to maintain workflow consistency. Changing my workflow is one thing. Changing the workflow of the rest of the team is another (and takes planning and training).
I have been delaying getting a new machine to replace the G5 because it still (used too) works and (at least my machine) has been reilable as you can get. I was also planning on trading in several Iphone 4S's next month for new 5S's... But that's now going to be delayed as well.
It looks like it is finally time to bite the bullet and plan out a hardware and software and workflow upgrade. Had planned to hold off till next spring for that(winter is our busy time).. but probably too long to wait to pull the trigger. Will have to figure out how to back it into the budget earlier than planned...
It's a shame... because it is much more complicated than it needs to be... If Window's XP can be supported... certainly OSX 10.5.8 could have been supported as well.. But 10.5.8 users are a captured market for Apple who will eventually (be forced to...like now!) upgrade. Window's XP users are prime new market targets to become "Switchers". When I upgrade our network, Apple's market share does not go up. When a Window's XP user first buys a Mac... bells ring on Wall Street... So it goes....
(ps... I will still encourage all my friends on Windozzzz.. to get a Mac!)

Mac Mini Core Duo or Power Mac G5?
Ok, so I'm very excited that I'll be making another Mac purchase soon, but I don't have a lot of money.
What I would like to know, is basically whether to get a Mac Mini Core Duo (hooray for todays update) or a little older Power Mac G5 1.6 or 1.8 GHz.
Why the G5 you say? The case is beautiful! Also, it's a bit more upgradable.
I won't be doing a lot of demanding things, mostly internet, some light Photoshop CS, and other OS X features. With the G5, I won't get Boot Camp but that's why I have 3 other PCs.
So which seems more logical or sensible? Both are pretty close price-wise once I configure the Mini.

(I also know what model G5 to look for with the increased FSB, RAM, etc. I'll only go for the 1.6GHz if the 1.8 offers a substantial performance boost.)I have a G5 dual 2.0 (one of the original models) and while I don't own a dual core mini, I've had the chance to test a few of them as they have been bought and added to the networks I support. In my experience, the mini has been noticeably faster in pure processing terms, but the limitations of the slower drive speed makes a considerable difference when comparing systems running disk-intensive tasks.
Add that to the fact that as yet Photoshop is not universal and will thus run under Rosetta on the mini, and is in itself an application that uses considerable 'paging' activity (swapping data to and from the hard drive) and you would find that all else being equal, the G5 would generally surpass the mini's performance. The same would not be true of less disk-intensive applications running in native mode on the intel system, where sheer performance of the dual core system would beat out the G5.
Bear in mind however that RAM is a critical factor. Common experience at present suggests that Intel-based Macs typically require rather more RAM than PPC Macs, and you cannot afford to loose track of the fact that with software such as Photoshop, large, fast hard drives and lots of memory are often more critical than sheer power.
Also bear in mind when making a choice, that a G5 system will consume considerably more power and generate more heat as well as requiring more space. If these considerations are not important to you, then in my view at this time the drive speed, expandability and performance of a G5 running non-native power applications would make the older system a more attractive proposition - certainly for the short term.
To me, the real question would be how soon I would be anticipating replacing the system. Neither would cease to be viable in the next few years, but the more the system would cost to buy, the longer it would typically need to remain in service. If the G5 cost significantly more, it would generally be needed to stay in active service long after Photoshop has gone native and the power of a cheaper intel Mac outstripped the capabilities of the G5. -

Nope, the top OS version for the IBM processor is 10.5.8, and under that version I can not update the iTunes further than the 10.6.3 :-(
But that means the brand leaves a large chunch os costumers with still perfectly operating computers out of the loop on purpose, so to force us to upgrade computer?
Not fair at all, both are legitimate Apple products, they should sync no matter what! The sad thing is theu used to, before I migrated to iOS7 on the iPad, move that I now regret... -

I used to have a Mobileme account and used it when I traveled to foreign countries yo read email. I do not know how to acess my email when traveling now. My email address is through mac.com. Please advise as there must be a way. We are traveling to South America soon for about a month and I need to know how to access my email from afar.

I think you updated to Leopard/10.5.x, Snow Leopard/10.6 is Intel only.
Actually you're in luck, you can still use iCloud for eMail on PPC using 10.4.11 or 10.5.8, but it must be IMAP, not POP...

Power mac become stupidly slow after update from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8
Hey people. My Power mac takes on average 3mins 30 to start up after i updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.8 . Before it took on average about 50secs to start up and get a application running. Are any of you experiencing this problem. I have only used 50gigs of space. I have done system recoverys and this still happens
i have checked. it will have the have the white screen where you see the apple logo and the loading cursor. That lasts about 40secs. Then it will it will show the loading bar. Thats lasts about 30secs. then it will show my desktop background image. It takes about 40secs to load my desktop items. then it will take about a min after that to show my username,time,Country flag,Volume control and my wireless icon in the top right hand corner. I have done 4 system restores, my recovery disks start at 10.4.4 it will work fine all the way up until 10.4.8. Is there a major bug in the upgrade or what?

Best way to update and expand RAM on old Power Mac G5?
I own a Power Mac G5 and am currently transferring all my files and music over. I have already run out of start up disk space after only transferring 1000 tracks and a few files. I'm sure this can't be right, but even so I would like to expand my memory and update to the latest versions of OSX but I have no idea if this is possible with such an old machine or even cost efficient. I would like something that I can do design work on as well as storing around 50,000 song tracks. Help!

Software update not working to update final cut 6 on PPC Power mac G5
My power mac g5 HD crashed and I did a fresh install on a new HD with mac osx 10.5. I updated the mac with available updates, and then reinstalled final cut studio 2 (finalcut 6) and CS3 Photoshop. The Updater is not picking up the updates for any of the software installed by final cut studio 2. Also, I tried to use the updater for adobe and it said there was no updates, but there was a problem with the adobe updater. Now I don't know if they are related, or just a weird coincidence. Did permissions repairs multiple times after booting and rebooting to no avail. I also tried to repair the disk and nothing. Help? I know i can manually download and install all the updates, but why the hassle ?

Not long ago I began to get messages upon start up of Firefox that I needed updating and the current version was not secure....To update I needed to upgrade my operating system. I had my Mac tech. update my operating system to OS 10.4.11 on my Power Mac G4 desktop. After doing so and updating the Firefox to 3.6.21 I found out that the Firefox start up page was lacking graphics - furthermore when I logged onto my bank there was no log out button and when I tried to download a driver for my printer the "Agree" button was not available to continue the download. I tried the download using Safari and was successful. Personally I prefer to use Firefox, so I hope there is help for me.

My Power Mac G5 version 10.4.11 keeps showing a black video, no beep, no start up chim, this occured after updating a security patch 2008-7 from Apple website, asked to reboot then I encountered this mess.
The powerlight is turn on with solid white color. My display also has its powerlight turn on with solid white. But not nothing happens, except the fan noise becomes gradually louder and louder. I wait for hours ... but ...
My system just won't start up. Although I tried to reset the SMU, reseated RAM...
I tried also to re-install the OS by CD but it's impossible to insert it to the DVD tray.

After weeks of strugle I can use my MAC as normal, but everytime I shut it down, she cannot wake-up, I had to refer to your hints in order to start it up again. So right now I can use my MAC every day with "SLEEP" mode.
She just cannot RE-START or wake up after a SHUTDOWN.
Any suggestion is greatly appreciated, here under I pasted the log file retrieved from Disk Utilities.
(I tried also to reset PMU, SMU and PRAM but nothing helped. Perhaps she is in need of a brand new PRAM battery???

Power Mac G5 won't restart after installing 10.4.10 update
Good Morning,
Last night I finally updated my Power Mac G5 to Tiger. That went just fine and I verified that everything was still functional and I could still connect to the web via my DSL. No problems yet...
I then downloaded the 10.4.10 update from Apple and installed it. When asked for Restart or Shutdown I chose Restart. The beginning of my problem. Upon restart I got the chime and the grey screen with the apple logo followed by the spinning stopwatch icon. It just kept spinning...for like 20 minutes. Then the fans started to wind up louder and louder and the spinning stopwatch icon stopped in it's tracks. I shut it down. It happened again.
Suggestions?
Trying to start from a disc (while holding down the "C" key) didn't seem to work any differently and wound up at the same result. Ironically, it just came out of the extended Applecare warranty this past February.

JimSo you can't use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk? It won't get there? If it does, does your drive show up, and what is it's S.M.A.R.T. status please?
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
