Update to Mavericks from lion

On my lion OS, i have VMware fusion, MSoffice etc all setup.
As you all know that Mavericks is available for free download. If I update the OS from lion, Do  I need to install those softwares again.
Or
Just the OS will be updated without effecting the apps and softwares installed like the upgrades in iphones/ipads

Mavericks is a free download only for beta testers, not the general public.
When it is announced formally that it is available to all (may be today, may not be today), the upgrade paths will be explicit.  It will also be a paid upgrade, not free.
So the news came out just minutes ago that it will be free - check the website in a little while for updates on system requirements to upgrade.
And yes, as long as you have the minimum pre-existing OS X version, an upgrade (like any upgrade) should only update the operating system and not touch 3rd party apps or user documents.

Before purchasing the upgrade, be certain that your MacBook meets the minimum hardware requirements listed in Step 1 of the following page:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
If you're not sure which model of MacBook you own, first use , About This Mac, More Info... Hardware Overview to determine the Model Identifier.
This Wikipedia MacBook entry will help you decode that Hardware Identifier into the terms Apple uses at the above Mountain Lion upgrade link, like 'Mid 2009' and so on.

  • Attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from Lion 10.7.5 and does not work, what gives?

Attempted to upgrade to Mavericks from Lion 10.7.5, but whenever I attempt the upgrade the Apple prompt replies 'cannot complete'. I may be mistaken, but I think my Mac Pro is qualified (MacPro 1.1, Dual-Core Xenon @2.66 GHz, 6 GB DRAM). What gives?

The MacPro 1,1 does not support Mavericks. It has to be a 2008 model or later:

I'm having the same issue with same error message "OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer". I click the "INSTALL" button in the app store and I get the message.
I have a macbook pro 15 inch, 60 GB of free space, 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 3 GB of Ram (well really 4 but it can't see the 1 extra gig). Mac OS X version 10.7.5.   I read the install description and I meet the requirement.
I have checked Launchpad for a stalled install (all 3 pages) and have checked if I have a time machine backup file on my root directory. No, I don't.

Well, if your Mac meets the system requirements here:

simply go to the app store and download Mavericks or simply click on upgrade now on this page:

After updating to Mavericks from Snow Leopard, everything works BUT all my photos were lost. If I buy the current version of iPhoto for $15, will it run on Mavericks?

If you have iPhoto from iLife '11, then I would first install it on your computer. In that way you would be able to get the new iPhoto free since you are running Mavericks.
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform.
The iWork apps are free with a new iOS device since 1 SEP 2013. They are free with a new Mac since 1 OCT 2013. They are also free with the upgrade to OS X Mavericks 10.9 if you had the previous version installed when you upgraded.

  • Problems downloading Mavericks from Lion 10.7.5

I've been trying to update my mid-2010 iMac with 4GB RAM, 265GB available storage, from Lion to Mavericks.
So I clicked on the icon in the App Store, entered my password, and the download begins. I can see the icon in Launchpad and I can see that something is happening in Activity Monitor. When the Progress bar under the Mavericks icon  is a little over two-thirds done, the icon just disappears. There's no error warning or anything. When I check the application folder, there's nothing in there. From the activity monitor, it shows the available memory has decreased my roughly 5GB. So something is downloading, but I can't find it in the applications folder or anywhere else.
I've successfully downloaded two other apps. I've tried downloading over Wifi and with an Ethernet connected, and I've tried downloading it in Safe Mode. Nothing has changed. The disk utility is ok. I also created a new Apple ID. No luck.

Let it download until you get an error message. It is a 5 GB+ download, which if you are using Wi-Fi will take awhile.

  • Safari won't load some images (after upgrade to Mavericks from Lion)

    Hi,
I've noticed that since I upgraded my OS from Lion to Mavericks, Safari won't load all images on certain websites.
I've tried loading the same pages on my daughter's MacBookPro (she upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks) and everything works just fine.
We cross checked the Safari preferences and everything is identical.
Below are two pictures, the first one taken from my computer, the second one from my daughter's. As you can see, in the first photo the image won't display, while it's been perfectly loaded in the second photo.
    Here's the website: http://blog.alice.tv/berengario/2013/11/16/trasmissione-su-arturo-tv/
I've tried opening the same page on Firefox, and all images are perfectly displayed.
    Could you please help me?
    Thank you for your support!
    Kind regards,
    Leo

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Hi jesusfromtempe,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
As long as the Apple computer you are using meets the OS X 10.9 Mavericks system requirements you will be able to upgrade directly from 10.6 to 10.9. The article attached outlines the system requirements.

  • 13" MBP Mid 2010 won't wake up after upgrade to Mavericks from Lion

    Hi
I read numerous threads regarding this problem from Mac Minis to Mac Pros and also MBA and MBP.  After upgrade from Lion to Mavericks, my MBP cannot wake up.  I have to hold the power button down to force it to turn off then power it back up from hibernation.  SMC reset, Mavericks reinstalled, Repaired Disk Permission, ram refresh, all done and did not help.
It helps whenever the computer goes to sleep, whether forcefully by choosing Sleep from the Apple Menu or by closing the lid.
Anyone please help, if not, APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS BUG.
    Thanks
    J
