Update to ML kills Large IMAP Account Performance

I'm using Mail.app in Mountain for two Gmail IMAP accounts (one personal, one work). I have both accounts set up to download and keep a local copy of everything. On my old 2009 MBP with SSD this setup gave me lightning fast local searches of my entire work history, and maintained perfect sync with my iPhone. Email nirvana.
I recently ponied-up for the Retina Display MBP and then upgraded to Mountain Lion. IMAP "performance" has suffered tremendously:
I archive messages only to have them re-appear
I'm getting messages much later than everyone else in the office (first world problems)
Some longer email threads take forever to load, seems to be network blocked (I can open the Activity window and see the operation spinning there)
My work account is pretty big; roughly 20 GB on disk. However, I had maybe 95% as much email on my 2009 MBP with Lion. After a painful initial download on my 2009 MBP it was flawless thereafter.
I've been searching all over the web for things like "IMAP performance", or "Gmail Mail.app bugs", and the most similar description seems to be coming from the poor devils that have to use Exchange: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3217006?start=0&tstart=0
But this is Gmail. Anyone else pushing Mail.app to the limit and finding that limit much closer to home in ML?

I have the same problem.  It seems to happen when it is doing an update of new mail.  This is new with ios7, working fine on 6.  It would be great if there was a fix.  Hanging everything for several minutes is really a pain.  Thanks.

    ... and so on....
What's happening? I'm not making any updates directly on Mobile me - just on mu iMac via Mail.

I have had the same issue. Rebuilding fixes it temporarily, but it comes back....Also have an issue where Mail will not download attachments automatically. They show up in grey until they are clicked...have Mail set to download all messages and their attachments, but it doesn't want to. Very frustrating. I have begun the switch to Entourage, which is unfortunate, as I like Mail more.

  • Update from Snow Leopad to Maverick cause email removal from all my IMAP accounts

Hello, i am using mac Mail.app to manage emails for several accounts. Some using POP some using IMAP. Have been working with same settings for more than 2 years in same system. Last week i got a new macbook pro with maverick on, used migration to transfer files & settings. Everything seemed to worked like a charm, until today that i figured out , all my IMAP accounts have Zero inbox on my machine! My machine is already synced with cloud, that means all emails have been deleted from cloud as well. Nothing left in trash or in any folder.
All these years i had copies of my emails in Cloud, somehow something has been really wrong.
Unfortunately i had no backpack, Filevault was disabled and had just bought my new air capsule but havent configured it yet .
    Thanks in advance,
    C
Already posted in google forums. Link
What i managed to do so far is to use a software called iSkySoft data recovery. Havent managed to recover yet because it requires registration. Does apple has any solution for

    Found it finally.
They show up when you select any email account. Select Account Information tab, then use pull down under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP).
That pull down also has Edit SMTP server list, where you can remove the un-used SMTP's.

  • Change Pwd on IMAP accounts

    Hi,
I had to change passwords on two IMAP accounts.
When I tried to change them on my iPhone 3GS it does not work, and it displays a message like "username or pwd not valid". Then I removed these accounts from the iPhone and I created two new accounts, with the all IMAP/SMTP settings, correct username and new pwds. But the message is always the same. Moreover mail write on the inbox a message like "updated at 9.01 a.m." that is the time just before pwd change. It seems like it is mantaing all previous settings!
    Is anybody have any idea?
    Thanks
    vincenzo

perhaps you could create a rule instead and trigger this via applescript.
It is a workaround, but probaly a reliable soliution...
perform mail action with messages v : Script handler invoked by rules and menus that execute AppleScripts. The direct parameter of this handler is a list of messages being acted upon.
perform mail action with messages list of message : the message being acted upon
in mailboxes mailbox : If the script is being executed by the user selecting an item in the scripts menu, this argument will specify the mailboxes that are currently selected. Otherwise it will not be specified.
for rule rule : If the script is being executed by a rule action, this argument will be the rule being invoked. Otherwise it will not be specified.

  • I have multiple imap accounts on thunderbird, but the last two accounts will not show messages in the inbox.

I have 7 imap accounts some with several subscribed folders. One is a gmail account. The others are from a personal .com. Everything works fine, including the gmail, except the last two accounts added will not sync the inboxes. The sent boxes sync fine, but I see no messages in the inboxes of just the last two accounts added. I know the imap server is working properly as the messages received to these accounts can be viewed via webmail, and the inboxes sync just fine on my email on my phone. I have been over and over all the settings from account to account. What am I missing. Please help.
    Thank you.

  • Gmail IMAP account stopped working with Apple Mail

I have Leopard with 10.5.5, just updated it a few days ago.
I have used my gmail account for a few years with Apple mail with no real problems, but now today, I got errors about an invalid certificate, and a little exclimation point by my gmail inbox. I have an iPhone and another Mac that I was syncing all this to so I don't know something with one of those screwed it up, so I have removed all gmail accounts from everything and I'm just trying to set it back up on my main laptop, but i get an error when setting up the new IMAP account. Now it says logging into the IMAP server has failed and to check my username and password... I am following the instructions from the gmail site really close, and I've even reset my gmail password.
anybody know why it still isn't working?

Hmm, turns out my iMac Apple Mail has been resetting the Mailbox activity settings for some random reason which would explain the drafts problem. Wonder why?

  • Need help with an error message when making changes to an IMAP account

I have several IMAP accounts in my Mac Mail. Today when I tried to edit the, "Full Name" associated with the account I got an error message that said:
    Invalid Directory
The account path /Users/kristen/Library/Mail/[email protected]@host365.ISPhost.com is already being used by the account "Silver"
Did I somehow corrupt something? I'm not sure why making this small change to the full name would cause such an error. Please help.
    Thanks!!

stop() forcibly kills a thread. You shouldn't use this method because if the thread is in a critical section of code, you can cause data corruption or deadlock.
Instead, if you need to stop execution from another thread, invoke the interrupt() method.
    Good luck.

  • Folders from Outlook not showing up in Mail Exchange or IMAP account

    Hi,
I have a work account that I access from Microsoft Outlook 2003 using Exchange Server 2003. Also I can access it through a webmail application. In both cases, I see my folders. Now, when I set up an Exchange account in Leopard Mail (I also tried POP & IMAP), I can't see the folders in Mac. It sends, it receives, the Inbox is perfectly fine and updated... but no folders.
I'm not talking about Public folders, just a few I created in Windows. (actually this is not for me, it's for another person. I don't use Windows since 2004 hahaha)
    Please help!

    Well,
now I see all the folders. It didn't work in the IMAP account, but it worked when I set up an Exchange account. Apparently (not sure) the problem was that I was using the same server in "Incoming Mails Server" and in "Web Access Server". Checking in the Outlook set up I found two different settings, one for Exchange Server, the other for the Mail Server.
    It works!

  • Can I copy emails between an IMAP account and an Exchange account, via Apple Mail client?

If I have an IMAP account configured in my Apple Mail client profile, and then I also add an Exchange 2010 Server account to that same profile, can I use the Apple Mail client to copy folders and messages from my IMAP account, into my mail store on the Exchange Server account?

Pop mail accounts must be set up to 'leave messages on the server'.
    check this before using.
    * Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
    * menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
select: 'leave messages on the server'
optional: select: 'for at most xx days' this will delete anything older than specified number of days select 'Until I delete them' when you delete an email it will be deleted off the server.
click on Ok to save settings.
Pop mail accounts only look at Inbox and download whatever has not been previously downloaded regardless of whether it has been read or not. They cannot access nor download from any other folder on the server.
If you wanted to download emails in other fodlers, you would have to move emails into the Inbox in order to download them and this may not be very practical in your situation.
What you can do is synchronize your IMAP folders to get a copy downloaded to your IMAP mail account.
Then go into 'offline' mode to stop any further synchronizing as synchronized folders do get updated.
MozBackup tool could now be used to backup the Profile as synchronising created mbox files which contain emails.
You can also do the following to get a copy outside of the IMAP mail account:
Create the same folders in 'Local Folders'.
Then right click on email and 'copy to' and select Local Folders and the folder you require.
Putting a copy in Local Folders means these emails are also on your computer and they are not influenced by anything you do in the IMAP folders.
You would need to backup emails in these folders.

  • Cannot Search in my IMAP Account

I have Outlook 2013 configured to use both an Office 365 and an IMAP email accounts. This setup has worked fine for about a year. Last week, I "suddenly" couldn't search my Inbox for the IMAP account. I can still search in my Office 365 account.
    I have tried:
    Restarting Outlook
Rebuilding the Index using Control Panel
    Removing and re-adding the account
Removing the account, deleting the ost file, and re-adding the account
None of those things have fixed this issue.  Is there a setting or configuration option I'm missing somewhere which might have been updated in a service pack update recently? Could this be impacted by something at my service provider?  (I wouldn't
think so since OL2013 downloads the entire message for IMAP support).

    Hi Russ,
The option "Current folder. Current mailbox when searching from the inbox."
works well for my IMAP accounts.
Since this is a "suddenly" problem, there must be some changes that lead to this issue, rather than a bug of the product itself. Have you ever made any changes to your Outlook client over that period of time?
Anyway, it's good to see you've found a workaround, but if you would like to do a further troubleshooting, Please try:
Check if you have installed any patches over that period of time. Probably a patch is causing the issue. Temporarily uninstall the patches, then try again.
Try to launch Outlook in safe mode, then verify result: Press Win + R and type "outlook.exe /safe" in the blank box, then press Enter.

  • Is Mail good for imap accounts?

I don't know if it is my setup or what but I am experiencing a few deal breaker problems:
    1. Mail seems brutally slow AND it seems to send my machine into a state of "powerwork" whilst performing basic tasks like selecting different folders.
    2. I have an imap account and a .mac account. Selecting back and forth between the 2 inboxes, mail seems to need to sit and think (almost as if to reload the whole folder) just to bring back the mail contents and make the list visible.
I have been using entourage which works great. I wanted to De-microsoft my mac as I thought I'd get an intercompatibility boost by switching to Mail but it looks like I may be wrong? Should I abandon the idea and go back to entourage?
    thanks!

    1. Mail seems brutally slow AND it seems to send my machine into a state of "powerwork"...
You have something wrong because you shouldn't experience that.
Selecting back and forth between the 2 inboxes, mail seems to need to sit and think (almost as if to reload the whole folder) just to bring back the mail contents and make the list visible.
I typically just view the top level inbox so that it includes the contents of the inboxes of all my accounts.
If you use the '.Mac type' when defining your .Mac account in Mail, it is also an IMAP account.
Using an IMAP account means that the e-mail client must establish contact with the remote IMAP server before the inbox is shown. The inbox on the e-mail client is essentially a window into what is stored on the IMAP server's inbox.

  • Mail crashes w/IMAP account access; EXC_BAD_ACCESS; KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE

My Mail app crashes with error (see below) when trying to access an IMAP account. I installed Adobe Creative Suite 2, that caused Mail and Safari to both fail. I uninstalled CS2 but that didn't help.
I tried a different user account, and both Safari and Mail worked fine.
    I deleted com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.Safari.plist but that didn't help.
I re-started Mail with no accounts, successfully added the .Mac account and a POP account. Then as soon as I added an IMAP account it started failing the same way: it opens okay then fails as soon as the IMAP account checks mail. Using Mail when logged in under a different user id doesn't have this problem, so it doesn't appear to be a bad email message.
I've searched through this forum (thanks!) and believe I've collected the right data, but am unsure what to do next ... i.e. exactly where is the problem!
    thanks for any help,
    Chris

    Hi, BDAqua,
No, no 3rd party or Internet Helpers, BUT I did load Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Photoshop, Illustrator, and other apps to make me smarter, faster, and more handsome. It had some automatic updater functions, and given that Mail and Safari suffered catastrophic failures I believe they put some hooks in there).
I've since unloaded the Suite -- I should know better than to load an entire suite. Also, I now have 23GB of space on my harddrive, and wonder if I ran out of room during the install. There was no error, but CS2 comes on 4 DVDs so I wonder ...
    Hi, Mulder,
I deleted the cache files - lots of stuff. I deleted two of the other files (didn't have downloads.plist).
Unfortunately, Mail still dies when it checks for mail in the IMAP account.

  • Mail crashing using IMAP account

I am having an issue with my IMAP Mail application. I installed Leopard on Friday and have used my e-mail over the weekend with no issues but today I was sending an e-mail and it seemed to send but then all of a sudden a message popped up and said:
"+Some actions taken while the account “IMAP Account” was offline could not be completed online.+
+Mail has undone actions on some messages so that you can redo the actions while online. Mail has saved other messages in mailbox “On My Mac” in “On My Mac” so that you can complete the actions while online.+
+Additional information: The IMAP command “APPEND” (to Drafts) failed with server error: Invalid mailbox name..+"
It also saved a copy of the e-mail to my drafts and the sent folder which it doesn't normally do. When I closed the box more copies of the same e-mail saved to my drafts and then another box popped up with the same information above. I closed that one and then more copies of the e-mail were saved into my draft folder. This kept repeating until eventually there were 44 copies of this e-mail in my drafts and then my mail just crashed and closed. I have tried deleting the drafts and the copy in the sent folder but somehow it keeps coming back and taking over my my mail.
Has anyone else had this problem before?

Got Mail working correctly on my Powerbook now.
As previously stated, my iMac Mail 3.0 app was functioning as it should, but not the powerbook.
First I reinstalled 10.5 on my PB with an erase and install and then used the migration assistant for all my preferences, users and documents (luckily I had a bootable backup of my 10.4.10 install made by Superduper!).
And did following steps: I first installed the login patch through software update. After a reboot, I shut off my internet access. I repaired my keychain with keychain first aid (I did this twice until no errors were shown). I ensured that .Mac sync was deactivated for keychains and mail rules (I assume this messed up my previous installation tentative, because my setting from the iMac where mixed up with the PB keychains). Then I rebooted again (just for peace of mind). I then connected to the net and started Mail. After the short rebuild, I found all my setting to be intact and working.
(Anecdote: my previous install was marred with IMAP access problems; the more I tried to fix them, the more it went wrong, cumulating in Mail.app crashing on start after a few error messages. In the meantime my repeated tries to access my IMAP email account resulted in my webhosting company blocking my IP address. So while I was assuming my problems were related only to Leopard, it was infact my ISP that was disallowing access. Once this was resolved with my ISP (at midnight! I love the service they offer), I reinstalled 10.5 to get everything working correctly.)
