Update to OS X 10.8.5 (12F45) hosed my Time Machine

I just let the intrusive App store update Mountain Lion, and when it restarted, my Time Machine disk, which had been working fine, would not mount. Now both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior say it can't be repaired.
I get this from Apple:
Mac OS X can't repair the disk "[NAME]."
You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can.
Well, that would be just fine if I happened to have an empty 2TB disk sitting around to "back up the disk" to, but I don't!
DiskWarrior says there's "not enough memory," whatever that means.
This all happened precisely when I updated. Last update they screwed up keeping external drives from going to sleep. Now this.

None of my Macs have experienced what you're describing, including failing to spin down externally connected drives, so let's find out what is wrong before concluding the recent update is the sole cause of your sudden disk failure.
Many third party (non-Apple) system modifications and "cleanup" tools can result in disk corruption. Is it possible your system has one or more such utilities installed? If that is the case it can be eradicated and your backup volume reformatted, allowing Time Machine to resume its normal tasks.
Consider running EtreCheck and posting the results in accordance with the following instructions. It may reveal something about your Mac that will advance troubleshooting:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:

  • Update from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 blown - Time Machine Restore blown

    Hello,
    summary of events:
Update form 10.7.02 to 10.7.3 went wrong
After Time Machine Restore no more Recovery Partion
    Lost about what to do
On Saturday, I startet to update 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 on my MB Pro 15" (2007) Apples Software Update showed the combo update, and so I started download and installation. Just before that, I had run Time Machine on an external USB drive, so I was relaxed.
After about 2 hours, the update was still running with no progress. After another hour, I forced a restart. Not very suprisingly, after the login, the wheel beneath the Apple logo kept on running.
So I restarted from the Recovery Partition, selected my Time Machine-Backup from the external USB drive, selected my internal HD as target and clicked on "go".
While the progress bar showed progress, I waited. Then it seemed to be complete and the MBP restarted. Now I got a folder with a question mark. My heart rate did not yet accelerate, since I had a back up, right?
So I restarted again trying to boot from Recovery Partition - BUT, there was no longer a Recovery Partition. Or at least, nothing I could boot from.
What options do I have? I could get my hands on a DVD that contains an Lion installation from the app store, but that is not the most recent version, as far as I can tell. If I would go that  way:
Does the version of the Lion-app matter?
Will it create a Recovery Partition?
If not, how else could I restore a complete Time-Machine backup?
Any help and suggestions are very welcome :-)
    Regards
    Jimbo
Naturally, I a am mad as **** at Apple. First, that they abandoned physical media for Mac OS distribution, and secondly that some not so bright lad thought it not necessary to secure the availability of the Recovery Partition under any circumstances short of phyical damage. This really *****, guys!

Ok... I'm not sure if the following suggestions will work with Filevault 2 enabled. I guess you can try after you create a backup for safety.
You can recreate the Recovery HD two ways. One is to reinstall Lion using a bootable USB thumb drive of the Recovery HD created with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. Or from a bootable USB thumb drive with the Lion installer restored to it.
A second way, which I have used many times, is to follow the instuctions at this site using Terminal commands. Step 3 is what you want to follow. The instructions use the RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg file downloaded from Apple to recreate the Recovery HD. It works great!

  • Photo transfer and update from 5-year-old Macbook to new iMac using Time Machine resulted in half of 2014's photos being un-viewable (only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows).  How do I fix it?

I turned on my new iMac for the first time today and set it up using a backup on Time Machine from my old Macbook, which is running OS X 10.9.5 and has iPhoto version 8.1.2.  When I went to open iPhoto on the new computer, it said I had to update the photos to work with the new version.  Now, my photos from part of July 26, 2014 and onwards do not show up in the new iPhoto.  The albums and spaces for the photos are there, but only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows in their place.  Every other photo from 2003 to half of July 26, 2014 appears to have updated without issue.  None of the fixes/rebuilds I tried worked.  When I open up TimeMachine, it has no backups that I can use for the new computer (perhaps, because I wanted to still have access to use my old backups for my old laptop so told it not to use them for the new computer).  My most recent half a year's photos are the ones I need the most.  How do I make them appear on my new iMac?

Do you still have the old Mac? Then check, if the iPhoto Library has the newer events from July 26 onwards.
If yes, copy the iPhoto library from the old Mac to the new mac by connecting both computers. And then try to upgrade the copied library.
If you no longer have access to the old mac, you could try to inherit the backup of the old Mac and try to restore the iPhoto Library from it.

  • Following update Word:mac window won't enlarge/Restore button on Time machine not active

I have found two issues following automatic installation of the Security Update 2014-005 that took place last night.
The first is when I open Word:mac my window is super-small (2"x2") and will not enlarge using the manual "pull" although the arrows do appear when my mouse touches the edge of the window.
When I could not discover a way to correct this, I decided to restore from my Time Machine backups, but my Time Machine Back-ups won't all me to restore. I can see the back-ups are there but the option to Restore is not active- I can select the various back-ups and only the Cancel option is active.
Since it seems I cannot go back I may try to upgrade the OS to Yosemite to see if that helps.
    Help is appreciated.

So the issue with Word:mac was a glitch that resolved by changing, then reverting, screen resolution options.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2008-macword/word-view-stu ck-small-and-wont-expand/bfd3fcd7-97bf-4e3d-998d-b5476bf2e83b
And apparently I can't restore from a back-up following a security update. This would have to be done using the recovery mode since firmware was updated.
    Good enough.

  • Every time I launch airport utility i says theres a new update to 5.6.1 so i click update and there is no update. Do i need to reset or restore my time machine? if so will I loose all my files?

the problem is that i launch the airport utility and it always says there is an update to 5.6.1, i click update and it launches the app store and tere are no updates available. i'm wondering if i need to reset or resetup my router but am afraisd if i do that i will loose all the files on my hard drive. I think this also may be related to why i am unable to use the remote app on my ipad or iphone for my apple tv (2nd gen) any input would be bvery helpful. i am now running mountain lion for my OSX

You must have upgraded to ML.. 5.6 airport utility is not actually ML compatible.. it will work but cannot be loaded as Apple ceased support at Lion. Hence why there are no upgrades.. you should not be using it at all. You are supposed to use toyland v6.1 included in ML.
I would certainly just ignore it.. having 5.6 is a great advantage .. it is a tool.. ML version is a toy.

  • After install of SSD, unable to update Mavericks OS as system believes disk is used for Time Machine

    Hi There,
Hopefully someone can help with this.
Yesterday I decided to replace the HDD on my macbook pro with a Crucial M500 SSD (240GB).
I connected via USB, and used the 'Restore' facility in the Disk Utility program to do this. Worth noting that I had to shrink teh partition on the original hard drive as the SSD is smaller than this.
All went well - I swapped the drives out this morning and teh machine booted up without any problems.
I then downloaded OS X Mavericks.
When I went to install, at teh point that teh system asks where I wanted to install to (i.e. the drive) it would not allow me to install to the SSD.
    The error was:
This machine is used for Time Machine backups.
I haven't used time machine at all for some months due to a lack of external storage, so this makes no sense to me.
I then ran repair disk and repair disk permissions incase this was the problem.
    Still no joy.
HAs anyone else had this problem at all?

    Hi There.
Time machine is already off, but then I found this:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2986?
    This fixed teh issue!
    Thanks anyway

  • Time Machine will not back up after updating from 10.2 to 10.3

This just started yesterday so it has to be due to the update.
The following error message is given in the Time Machine settings:
The backup disk needs 257.55 GB for the backup but only 234.84 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.
250 free gigs on my backup disk but it can't make the backup? What? I currently have 900GB filled on my regular hard drive but I don't back up all of it. I exclude about 150GB from backup, so the machine estimates the total backup size to be 759GB. The backup drive already has 764GB filled, so I'm not sure where all this extra info is coming from. Haven't downloaded anything besides the new update.
Any ideas on what to do?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    tmutil compare | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take several minutes to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Don't post all the output; just read it yourself. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.
Caution: Under some conditions, tmutil may falsely flag files as not having been backed up when in fact they have been. It can be confused by multi-linked files, or by files with a modification date earlier than the one in the snapshot. This will not be an issue for most users. If the results of the above procedure surprise you, inspect your snapshots directly.

  • OS X 10.5.3 update... Does Time Machine over network still work

Anyone updated to the new 10.5.3 and know if Time Machine still works over the network via AEBS?

I was hoping 10.5.3 would fix things for time machine/time capsule, I had issues with it hijacking my laptop and the network doing fsck_hfs. So I looked forward to fixes, had been doing only back up now, since having to reset everything. I tried it, it took an our to get past preparing, then had 15 meg out of 2 gig backing up, stuck there for hours. I finally killed it by dismounting the disk. When my disappointment reduces I may try a fresh start. I am sure they worked very had on it.

  • After update to Maverics, one can't delete older backups (on older OS) throu Time Machine

After i updated one of my three macs to Maverics, i've stumbeled apon a "problem".
One can' delete older backups, throu time mascine, that have been backuped using an elder OS (like Snow Leopard).
You can see its's there on the timeline, but you can't do anything with it.
There is of course a solution, and that is to format the time capsule. And do a whole new back up.But thats where my problem is.
As i mention, i do have thre macs. And the other two are still on Snow Leopard. But thats not the issue here.
The issue is that i dont want to start the prossess of backing up all three mascines... Again.
All i want to do is delete and older backup. Since i have 2 TB, use almost all space on the Time capsule, when i backup three macs. Aand thats why i need to delete older bacups manually every time on each indidual mac i have.
So i hope anyone maybe have a easier solution, then to formate the time capsule.
    Anyone?

    Update:
The "problem" is now solved. I went into Time machine again, and all of a sudden i could delete the old Snow Leopard backup.
I think maybe i was to eager and didn't wait long enough. This time i waitet for the backups to "load" up, and it did.
And then i could delete the old back up.
I feel a bit silly, but the "problem" is now solved. And thats the most important thing, is it?

  • Where can i find edited adobe photoshop files in time machine after update?

i was having issues with my computer, brought it in to apple store. they suggested i back everything up on external using time machine before doing a erase/re-write. i did so. HOWEVER, my edited photos in photoshop & bridge are gone. after the re-write, i updated from CS3 to CS5.5. all of my metadata is gone from the pictures, my keywords and all of the edited photos.
i don't know if it is related and it's not really my question, but i cannot access any of my itunes music now as it says that it cannot find original files. super frustrating as no one seems to know how to help with this. these two issues arose after my time machine backup that the apple genius told me would certainly back up all of my files. it seems i did something wrong prior to the backup or prior to the software updates that i did after the rewrite. any suggestions that could point me in the right direction are appreciated.

That path is still correct - at least it is on my system - but unless you had Library brought out into a place where it could be found, in the Sidebar for instance, I don't know how you'd get into it in Time Machine. Try this, though: access the user's Library folder via the Go To Folder command, then drag the Library folder into the sidebar. Then run Time Machine and see if the Library folder persists in the TM interface. If it does, you should then be able to navigate into Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ and find and restore the backup folder.
    Hope this helps.

  • EFI Update Causes Time Machine Problems

After the EFI update today (10/12) Time Machine will no longer mount its disk image on an external network drive via AFP wireless connection. The external drive is presented through Ubuntu 8.10 with Netatalk 2.03. Anyone else having this problem yet, or better yet have a solution?

Fixed it! Mounting it in Disk Utility and repairing the file system worked. It should be noted however that I can't confirm the update was the cause of of this problem but, its some kawinky-**** huh?

    Hi
To run Mouitain Lion you need to update Logic.
For the updaters to work the Logic application must be:
    a) Within the Applications folder, and not in any sub-folder
    b) Named "Logic Pro" with no extra numbers or spaces

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
