Update to Reader XI won't open

I recently updated from Reader X to Reader XI. The new program initiates to blank document screen and closes immediately. It will not show new documents and it will not show documents previously viewed by Reader X. I tried to revert to Reader X and had the same problem. How can I fix this? I need my Reader for all kinds of bank statements and other documents.

Thanks for the attempting to assist. Reader XI will not stay opened. I open Reader XI and it stays open for a maximum of 5 seconds and closes. I tried to select "Edit" in Reader XI and I get a bell alert and it closes.
So, I opened Acrobat and did as you suggested in Step 1. When I get to the screen that displays: "Display PDF in browser," the box is checked and it is shown in light gray. I cannot select it.
I really hate it when all I do is download an update and everything goes wrong. Then, I start doing all sorts of things to make it work and I go deeper and deeper into the forest and forget the way back out. It just messes up my whole computer that was working just fine before the update! When I installed the update, it goes all the way through without any glitches and finishes saying I have successfully updated Adobe Reader. Then, the program won't work!!!
I would like to go back to Reader X that was working just fine, but I uninstalled XI, reinstalled X and it won't work now either! Each time both programs install without problems and finish by saying program was installed successfully. Why???

If you use a system restore then you have the risk that not all files are reverted to previous versions and you most likely have corrupted your Firefox installation.<br />
You will have to do a clean reinstall of Firefox and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).<br />
Your personal data is stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure not to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

I did the following and it fixed the problem...
Let us assign permissions to the C drive(or the drive where you have installed the OS) and then check.
To apply permissions to a file or folder for a user:
a. Right-click on the C drive and then click Properties.
c. Click the Security tab, and then click Edit.
d. Do one of the following:
i. To set permissions for a user that is not listed under Group or user names, click Add, type the name of the user or group, click OK, select the permissions, and then click OK.
ii. To change or remove permissions from an existing group or user, click the name of the group or user, select the permissions, and then click OK.

Does anyone know why Reader X won't open secure .pdf, such as a downloaded manual?

I'm using Vista 64,and updated to Reader X. It will open standard .pdf files, but secure ones (I downloaded manuals for my Canon digital camera software) not only will not open, but cause Reader X to stop responding.
My temporary solution: delete X and reinstall 9.4.whatever.
What has happened to the infallibility of this software?

It could be that there is a problem with the pdf files. Each version of Acrobat and Reader are more intolerant to malformed pdfs as that is a vector for spyware and virii.

This does not look good. I am also surprised that System Restore would do that; normally System Restore does not touch user data (Program Files); only system data (Windows).
I suggest that you run the Acrobat Removal Tool http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html (multiple times, until all Reader installations are gone), then delete these duplicate install folders, and install Reader again.

It's possible that you need new drivers from HP, in order to be compatible with OS X 10.8.3. Looking at HP website, they haven't released new drivers since last November. You might need to wait for new drivers or contact HP to push for an update.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Adober Reader suddenly won't open any PDF files (Mac)

I had an old version, I downloaded the latest one, upgraded to the newest, even tried taking that one out and downloading an older version. It doesn't matter which version I seem to have, it won't open any pdf files from the web.
I use a Mac, and Safari. It used to always load PDF files fine, one random place said I had to update it so I did and since then, lately it'd crash and close all Safari windows when loading a PDF or trying to copy something from a PDF. The smart Mac message I have says it could be related to an Adobe Plug in. However, now it won't even load PDF files at all, it always goes to a white page. Nothing happens.
What do I do?? I can't even save the PDF's as individual files and view then in Preview as an alternative option. It's a link online and normally would work. What happened??

I have a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
I've always used Safari, it's Version 5.0.5 (5533.21.1 if that means anything).
Acrobat Reader, currently an old version 9.4.0 download. BUT, I had also the 10.0.1 version which also doesn't work. When I had that 10.0.1 version and checked for updates, there was an update (.3 I think?) and I did that and that also doesn't work!
Why did it suddenly stop working?
What can I do to fix it ASAP?
Only with 9.4.0 version I can go to Help and "Repair Adobe Reader Installation" - I click that and the only box I can select is "Adobe PDFViewer Safari Plugin - View, fill-in and collaborate on Adobe PDFs within Safari" - I click continue and it tells me there's "No missing components detected. Repairs are not needed." The only option is to click "OK".
With any newer version of Adobe Reader, under Help there is no option to "Repair Adobe Reader Installation". So... I can't even try that with a new version.

There are several things you can do. My first step would be to repair permissions. If that doesn't work log on as a different user. If all works properly then you have a corrupt preference file (most likely) or a corrupt user font installed in your user Library (less likely). If that doesn't work download Applejack. Have it repair the disk, remove all system caches and user caches. Then have it check all system and user preference files. Remove any preference files that are corrupt. Reboot and see if your system is working properly.

good diagnosis, iWonnaMac. your version of this is almost certainly going to be due to an incompatibility between your QuickTime and Windows Update KB908531 on Server 2003 systems.

Adobe Reader X won't open pdfs in IE8

I've just updated my installation of Adobe Reader X to the latest version, 10.01. Now it won't open web hosted pdfs in Internet Explorer (the previous version did). When I try and open a pdf from a web host I'm told that the file can't be open with the default program (and suggests that the file might be corrupt); I'm only given the option to save the file. Once saved locally on my harddrive Reader X opens the file without complaint.
Any ideas how to solve this? I'm running Internet Explorer 64bit under Windows 7 Home Pro. 64bit and Internet Explorer 8. An interesting note is that the pdfs do open correctly in IE8 32bit.

I have exactly the same problem. Running win 7 64 and IE8 64. Everything was working perfect in version 9. I have tried to repair and looking for solutions too.
Does Adobe Support read this or?

My adobe reader won't open. I un-installed it re-downloaded it to desktop,all my pdf documents have the adobe icon, but nothing will open. Reader worked fine before. This happened out of the blue.

I recently updated to Adobe Reader XI, and it won't open pdf scans from my Lexmark all-in-one scanner. (It worked fine with my older version of Reader.) Any idea how I can fix it?
