UPDATE : Toshiba Recovery Wizard 'cannot read from source file or disk' error (satellite L500)

UPDATE 2: Phoned Toshiba tech support again, guided by techie to begin the recovery again. Just before phoning I was able to go into recovery options and view the drive setup and all the files that couldn't be read are on the CD so I've no idea why the error kept occuring, and neither did the techie. Fingers crossed it works this time but I'm not overly hopefully given that we've just done exactly the same as I did before.  UPDATE 1: I got into the BIOS and reset everything back to defaults and yay, my toshiba recovery wizard now starts! :-D  On the down side, when trying to do a factory default software / out of the box recovery I continually get error messages with regards to copying the files, for example
cannot read from source file or disk
7z.dll
Type application extension
size 585kb
date modified 7/14/2009 10.26pm
other read / copy errors include PREINST6.SWM, BOOT_32, BOOTPRIORITY, CHECKMAXPTSIZE, CHGBOOT, CPU, CPUCHECK, CREATEPARTITION, CTRLDRVINFO, DISKWIPE, DMI, DPINST32, EBLIB.DLL, ERRORDIALOG, EW3BOOTSEQ, FWLINK, FWLINK.SYS, GETHDDINFO, GETKEYSTATE, IMAGEX, INFILED, INITRECAREA, KRAIADAPI.DLL ..... at which point I decided to 'skip all' :-/
Any explanations as to what's going on and how I might be able to fix it would be very much appreciated! :-)  Thank you!
I have a two and half year old satellite L500 with an Intel i-3 and 4 gigs of RAM, on which I was running Windows 7.
Admittedly it’s had rather a hard life (I ran some very demanding CAD / graphics software on it) but it had always performed well until just recently, when after suffering several BSOD (which had never happened before), the hard drive failed.
I partitioned and formatted a brand new hard drive (which is perfectly fine and functions normally when hooked up to another laptop with a SATA to USB cable) and obtained system recovery discs from Toshiba.  Unfortunately, when I try and run the first disc, windows starts to load files but then generates an error screen with the message Error F3-F100-0003 and a request to turn the computer off.
When I use the windows Memory Diagnostic to get into the Windows Boot Manager Screen I get the following;
Windows failed to start.  A recent hardware / software change might be the case.
To fix the problem
Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer
Choose your language settings and click ‘next’
Click ‘repair your computer’
File: \boot\memtest.exe
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.
I can also use F8 on startup to get into the advanced boot options but selecting any of them simply results in the F3-F100-0003 error message.  I’ve run a memory test using the UBCD, which tells me the memory is fine, and tried another hard drive (which also works perfectly well in another laptop) but no joy.  On phoning Toshiba support the techie said my hard drive had failed, but as I say, both hard drives are perfectly fine / usable when hooked up to another laptop.  I’m now completely stuck as to what the problem is and how I might resolve it – any advice / suggestions would be most gratefully received! Thank you in advance :-)

the second disc gives me the the "cannot read from source file or disk PREINST8.SWM"
My best guess is that the disc is not readable. Try copying it to another. Sometimes that works.
Otherwise, order new discs from Toshiba.

  • Recovery Disk Error : cannot read from source file or disk HOW TO FIX ISSUE

    I have had my satellite L655-S5096 for some time now.. I had to switch out hard-drives the other day and installed windows 7 home on it from my own disk.  I tried to download all the drivers needed, but the graphics and wifi drivers never worked, so I pulled out the old toshiba disks to start from new with this harddrive.. It gets to asking me for the second disc, then the second disc gives me the the "cannot read from source file or disk PREINST8.SWM"  This is from the "out of the box" setting, which is recommended.  I do not know how to fix this issue besides reinstalling windows 7 from my disc and trying to get the drivers to work again.. however I shouldn't have to since I have the Toshiba recovery disks.. do I need new disks?
    Yes, I also had the hard drive drivers and all of that installed.. my toshiba reads the HDD just fine.

  • AME cannot read from source file???

    THE SOLUTIONS POSTED ON THE ADOBE SITE (see below) FOR THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT WORK!!!!  Any other suggestions Adobe???
    Do one or both of the following solutions:
    Solution 1: Create a shortcut to the Premiere Pro executable file, rename the shortcut to Premiere, and move the shortcut to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
    Close all Adobe applications.
    In Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. (If you installed Premiere Pro CS4 in a location other than the default of C:\Program Files\Adobe, then navigate to your custom installation location.)
    Right-click on Adobe Premiere Pro.exe (which might appear without the .exe extension) and choose Create Shortcut.
    Rename the newly created shortcut to just Premiere.
    Important: The name of the shortcut must be exactly Premiere with no other characters.
    Open a second Windows Explorer window, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
    Move the Premiere shortcut that you created into the dynamiclink folder.
    Solution 2: Remove and reinstall all Premiere Pro CS4 components or all Adobe Creative Suite 4 components.
    Do one of the following:
    Windows XP: Choose Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
    Windows Vista: Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
    In the list of installed programs, select Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, or Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection.
    Click Change/Remove (Windows XP) or Uninstall (Windows Vista).
    Follow the on-screen instructions to remove all components of Premiere Pro CS4 (including Adobe Encore CS4 and Adobe OnLocation CS4) or to remove all components of your edition of Adobe Creative Suite 4.
    Re-install your Adobe software.

    Solution 2 did not work.  I have been using adobe software for seven years and do not have 'other' problems.  The only piece of info I can gather off the forum is that when you have replaced CS3 from a system with CS4, some remnants of CS3 remain to reek havoc.  I have isolated the problem to the project file, but still can not get the sequence I need to export or import into another project.

  • Can't Read from Source File

    Hi Guys
    I'm using PPr CS5 on Win7 64bit.
    I'm not sure if this is strictly for here but can I pick your brains please? I edited in PPr and exported three versions of the same video to AVI (mainly different intros and titles) and they all play fine. I back up my movies to an external disk but one of them always creates an error in the back-up "Can't Read from Source File". The file sizes are 5.3gb for the offending movie and 8.3 for the other two.
    I know the answer is to re-export the movie but I'm just trying to get a bit of a handle what could have caused this problem in the first place and if this is a common problem?
    Any views?
    Regards,
    Graham

    That doesn't help much.  What exactly are you doing when you get the error message?
    Are you trying to open a PP project which contains the file?
    Are you trying to play a sequence which has clips from that file?
    Are you trying to play it in a media player?
    Are you trying to import the file into PP?

  • Cannot export video: AME cannot read from source, Installation Error

    Ok, I've seen a lot of people on here talk about this and I have tried using their solutions but nothing has worked.
    I cannot export anything from Premier Pro using Media Encoder.  When I try, I get an yellow warning sign saying that it cannot read from the source, and when I close out of it I get a message saying that there is an installation error and that I need to make sure it is installed correctly.  I have uninstalled and re-installed ALL of my Adobe products about three times this past weekend trying to fix it and nothing has worked.  I have tried making sure that there are no blank spaces in my project, I have named it several different things, I have moved it from my external drive to my main drive, to a different external drive, etc.
    I am using a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard, all of my software has been updated, and I am very frustrated.
    Help?

    Bummer!
    Well, it was worth a shot, as externals/network drives have been known to cause similar.
    Now, there were issues with Encore and Snow Leopard, but I do not recall all of the details, as I am a PC-guy, and have to admit that first I do not know squat about Macs, and probably do not read Mac threads as closely, as I should. Seems that Apple was working on an update to Snow Leopard, and again from recollection, it seems that that update helped several on the Encore forum. Have you updated Snow Leopard?
    Sorry to just sit here guessing, and probably wasting valuable time for you, but until a Mac-user with the "fix" comes along, the PC-community will try to help. Be patient with us though. Our intentions are good ones, but our expertise is lacking - at least in MY case.
    Good luck,

  • AME cannot read from source location

    I've read up and down the forums about people having trouble with Adobe Media Encoder and no one
    has posted a clear answer.
    I am working on an iMac running OSX version 10.6.2.  My processor is a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo and I have 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM.
    My problem lies in exporting a sequence from Premiere Pro CS4 to video.
    I highlight my sequence, which previews perfectly in Premiere, then go to File > Export > Media...
    I choose my settings and click OK.
    Promptly, AME pops up and places my selection in the queue with a status of "Waiting."
    I then click "Start Queue."
    At this point, AME does nothing for roughly 6 minutes.
    After this time, the status of the queued item changes to a warning symbol.
    Clicking on the warning symbol, I get the AMEEncodingErrorLog.txt
    Here, it tells me "Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted."
    While checking what source file it is refrencing, I notice that it creates a new file every time I queue something new.
    These source files are all in the folders referenced by AME.
    Why can't AME just work?

    Finally, I have found the answer.  On a CreativeCow.net forum, user Bill Clark posted the solution.  Found here: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/886944
    Re: CS4 Premiere Won't Encode Videos..
    by Bill Clark on Dec  7, 2008 at 1:56:10 am
    OK,  believe it or not, 5 mins after I posted my rant I managed to solve my  problem. It had nothing to do with all the stuff that everybody on the  web was suggesting about re-installs and clean scripts. Something much  simpler. I have a few plug ins on AE - Sapphire, Magic Bullet etc and I  realised that every adobe programme was loading them on start up. And I  kept getting an error message from Premiere Pro and Media Encoder about  Magic Bullet looks - that it wasn't registered. It was driving me nuts  because it is. I reinstalled everything twice, and during this process  spotted that Adobe is now putting all the plug ins in a central folder -  which it refers to as media core. This on a Mac is at Macintosh  HD/Library/Application Suport/Adobe/Common/Plug ins/CS4. (There might  also be a CS3 file as well)
    It occurred to me that this might be causing confusion - Media  Encoder trying to load plug ins that it doesn't understand and might not  be licensed for in the XML file. So I pulled them out of there and put  them straight into the AE CS4 plug in folder. Bingo. All the plug ins  run fine - AND SO DOES MEDIA ENCODER! And now, no problems at all with  the dynamic links between AE, Premiere Pro and ME.
    I'm not saying this is the solution for everyone - but it's worked  for me. Hope it helps somebody.
    Over and out.

    So there is nothing wrong inertly with AME, just that it was trying to load plugins that it ought not.  Thanks for all the help leading to this solution.

  • Itunes cannot read from or write to disk

    So I just got this new notebook, and I moved all my itunes files over and tried to sync my ipod touch. It didn't work out so well... I got an error message saying that the disk could not be found, it begins to sync and then I got an additional message saying that the ipod could not be read from or written to.

    Pack the old ipod up and send it back, soon or they will charge you $119 on your Credit Card. Sounds like there may be a possibility that your ipod shuffle may not be communicating with your USB ports properly. Try running the ipod updater software and try restoring the ipod. If that does not work, test your shuffle on another computer to see if it may not be an issue with the USB port. I know the 20GB works fine...But it still just may not communicate properly for some reason. As for updating the shuffle, I create a playlist in my itunes and when I plug in my shuffle, it gives me an option to autofill. I just select the playlist I want loaded to my ipod and hit autofill...Which works just fine for me.

  • Cant read from source file

    I´ve been using Compressor 4 for a long time, but thought I would give AME a try to see if there is any difference in quality. I added about 70 ProRes clips to the render que, each is between 4 and 30 seconds. These are clips with a lot of animation and effects, but they have already been exported to 1920 x 1200 ProRes files. I have 6 different presets: DXV and PhotoJPEG codec with three different resolutions each. When I start the que I get an error message saying that source file cant be read. Please check if it

  • Reading from text file gives IndexOutOfBoundsException error

    Dear All
    I really need your help in doing my assignment as soon as possible
    I am reading from a text file the following data
    4231781,Ali,AlAli
    4321790,Adnan,AlAli
    using two classes first one is
    public class Student
    private String studFName;
    private String studLName;
    private String studID;
    private double assignment1;
    private double assignment2;
    private double final_exam;
    private double total;
    public String getstudfName() {
    return studFName;
    public void setstudfName(String studFName) {
    this.studFName = studFName;
    public String getstudlName() {
    return studLName;
    public void setstudlName(String studLName) {
    this.studLName = studLName;
    public String getstudid() {
    return studID;
    public void setStudID(String studID){
    this.studID = studID;
    public double getAssignment1() {
    return assignment1;

    public void setFinal_exam(double final_exam) {
    this.final_exam = final_exam;
    public double getTotal() {
    return total;
    public void setTotal(double total) {
    this.total = total;
    Student[] students = new Student[30];
    the second is manager one which is:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.util.Arrays;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    public class manager {
    public static Student[] students = new Student[30];
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // We want to let the user specify which file we should open
    // on the command-line. E.g., 'java TextIO TextIO.java'.
    if(args.length != 1) {
    System.err.println("usage: java manager (file_name)");
    System.exit(1);
    // We're going to read lines from 'input', which will be attached
    // to a text-file opened for reading.
    BufferedReader input = null;
    try {
    FileReader file = new FileReader(args[0]); // Open the file.
    input = new BufferedReader(file); // Tie 'input' to this file.
    catch(FileNotFoundException x) { // The file may not exist.
    System.err.println("File not found: " + args[0]);
    System.exit(2);
    // Now we read the file, line by line, echoing each line to
    // the terminal.
    try {
    String line;
    // Student[] students = new Student[30];
    while( (line = input.readLine()) != null ) {
    // System.out.println(line);
    int m = line.indexOf(",");
    int j = line.lastIndexOf(",");
    String sID = line.substring(0,m);
    String sfn = line.substring(m+1,j) ;
    String sln = line.substring(j+1);
    int n = 0;
    students[n] = new Student();
    students[n].setStudID(sID);
    students[n].setstudfName(sfn);
    students[n].setstudlName(sln);
    students[n].setAssignment1(0.0);
    students[n].setAssignment2(0.0);
    students[n].setFinal_exam(0.0);
    students[n].setTotal(0.0);
                        ++n;
    catch(IOException x) {
    x.printStackTrace();
    // Arrays.sort(Student.students);
         int length = args.length;
    System.out.println();
    // System.out.println("Sorted by stuID");
    for (int i=0; i<length; i++) {
    System.out.print("Student ID "+students.getstudid() + "|||");
    System.out.print("Student Fname "+students[i].getstudfName() + "|||");
    System.out.print("Student name "+students[i].getstudlName());
    when I comile progrma it doesn't give any error but when I run it gives me the following exception:
    java.lang.String.substring. IndexOutOfBoundsException string index out of range : -1
    as can be seen from the manager class I form the read line from readline method as follows:
    int m = line.indexOf(",");
    int j = line.lastIndexOf(",");
    String sID = line.substring(0,m);
    String sfn = line.substring(m+1,j) ;
    String sln = line.substring(j+1);
    Therefore, student ID should be read from the beggining tel the character before the comma (,) then from the character after first comma tel that before second comma will be firstname, finally the rest after second comma will be last name.
    I want my program to read all lines in the text file and put them in order as above forming the array like database record and print them all.
    Could you please Help me in this matter friends as soon as possible.
    Regards,
    Java_Hobby

    please, format you code first (select your java code and hit the code button), then post all the error log message.

    I updated from the original version to 6.0.1 and when I re-started FF there were 4 icons on my desktop. I managed to delete one of them, but I cannot delete the other two - to leave me with just one.
    I get the error message of "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source fie or disk".

    Here's the meaning of the error that you received.
    "An error has occurred. ERROR :10-FC06-0002" -- may be caused by damaged recovery media or faulty hard drive"
    Possible that the problem is on the recovery also.
    Hope this helps.

  • P745: Possible Bad Hard Drive. How do I get Toshiba Recovery Wizard on New HD?

    Hey everyone last week my computer was behaving slouchy so I did a simple restart. When it restarted it took me to a screen which said loading "Windows files" then it took me to Startup Repair. Startup repair could not repair the issue and I did a few check disk scans and one of them said 4 sectors of the hard drive were bad. I used Toshiba recovery wizard and restored the computer to an out of box state.
    I also installed ubuntu 12.04 as a dual boot option last night. Now fast forward to this morning and I am using Windows. After installing Toshiba driver updates the laptop is again behaving slouchy and refusing to load web pages. When I restart the computer after one to the driver updates I get an error about not being able to start windows and so I choose "Attempt to boot from last successful attempt" this works. However, something tells me that the bad sectors of the hard drive are to blame.
    So I want to order this 1TB toshiba notebook hard drive and install in the P745. http://www.toshiba.com/us/accessories/Storage/Hard-Drive-Replacements-and-Upgrades/1TB/PH2100U-1I54
    However, the hard drive will be blank and so I want it to have Windows 7 on it and the Toshiba recovery wizard which I find to be extremely useful.
    How do I go about getting back Windows 7 on the new hard drive and the recovery partition on the new drive. Do I order the recovery usb from Toshiba? https://support.toshiba.com/repair?orderType=SFF
    Then somehow this usb will assist me in transferring the contents of my current hard drive to the new one including Windows and Toshiba Recovery Wizard?
    I would be grateful for any clarifications and assistance you can provide.
    Thanks.

    Post full model and operating system!
    Your answer in general -
    You should have the option to create recovery media from your Toshiba so you don't have to buy them.
    Type in your search bar recovery and the recovery media creator or may be named something different should be there to make the 3 or 4 DVD's.
    This will restore to out of box settings including the recovery partition. - IT DOES NOT BACKUP YOUR OTHER OPERATING SYSTEM or anything you have added since it was new.
    During the recovery it will ask if you want to rescue your info or you can save your documents, pictures , etc manually before hand.
    If you reformatted the drive and installed a stand alone version of windows 7 there will not be a recovery partition and you will have to order the recovery media, you can get it here in US : http://support.toshiba.com/recovery#media

  • Windows Easy Transfer (WET) Issues with External Hard Drive - "Can't read from the source file or disk"

    I work for Office Depot, in the tech department. Basically, one of our associates was supposed to do a data backup, and re-install Windows 7, then transfer the files back. He used Windows Easy Transfer and compacted everything into a 163 GB file.
    Now comes the hard part. When we try to put it back on his computer ((drag-and-drop to the desktop) which has been wiped back to factory settings using the recovery partition), it stops at 79.5 GB remaining (you know how it doesn't give you a % of completion,
    it just shows how many GB are remaining) and then says "Can't read from the source file or disk" and gives you an option to try again, or cancel. It gets hung up on the same point each time.
    Normally, this wouldn't be a huge issue, but the contents on the drive are his wife's architect blueprints and interior design stuff, along with wedding photos, etc, which are the only copies they have. On top of those, they have court documents and other
    important files that we are unable to access now.
    I wasn't involved with this transfer, so I'm trying to clean up the mess as best I can. I remembered that the customer's wife was Russian, and had some files typed with a Russian keyboard, so on and so forth. I wonder if that's the issue? If not, I really
    have no idea how to manually extract things from a ".mig" file, or how to diagnose what area is potentially corrupted.
    In light of this situation, we tried using "Recuva" to recover the files post-wipe, but everything was corrupted or unable to be opened, and it also extracted and recovered all of the "useless" photos, such as the skype logos, up and
    down arrows for browsers, etc (it was 160,000+ photos).
    Trying to avoid a potential lawsuit, unhappy customer, and costing the company lots of money to see if professionals can get into this external hard drive.
    Other relevant information:
    We used a Toshiba 500 GB (465 GB) external hard drive.
    Customer's computer is an HP Pavilion P6000 Series (Model No. p6520y) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1.
    Any other information that is needed can be provided, thanks in advance, and hopefully we can find a solution to this issue quickly!
    -John

    I think there's a lack of understanding somewhere.
    "If you even can't start the process, please unplug it from your new PC. Then head back to your new computer and plug
    the external drive back in to your new computer. "
    Unplug from new, head back to new, plug it back in? That doesn't make much sense! Haha.
    I knew what you meant though, somewhat. When I search through the drives after clicking yes (Has windows easy transfer
    already saved your files blah blah blah) I click on the transfer file and it says "Windows Easy Transfer could not open the file".
    Rather than drag-and-drop the file to the desktop, I now tried to double-click on the file itself while it was plugged
    into the computer. It opened, and it started transferring until it was about 70% completed, and then an error popped up saying "WET can't open the easy transfer file, make sure your USB device is plugged in or check your internet connection".
    I checked, and the USB hard drive's light wasn't on. Now, I unplug it and plug it back in, and the light comes back on,
    so I click Retry, and it resets the bar back to nothing and says "Transfer time: 1 minute".
    Rather than continue trying, I clicked "Cancel" instead of Retry, and it says "Your transfer did not complete successfully."
    It says to click "view report" for more information, but there's no "view report button".
    At the moment, I am scanning the External Drive for bad sectors using the check disk tool in properties. It's frozen
    at "0 USN bytes processed".
