Step-by-step on how to update a friend's iPad using my computer
Recently I was asked to update my friend's iPad. Her old computer was not usable any more! I was very apprehansive about doing this, as I did not want to get our "stuff" mixed up and also did not want to lose any of our "stuff".
I posted this question on the forums and a couple people replied, and even though I got some good information, I felt that it was not enough.
So I contacted my son, who is a whiz with computers (at least I think so!) and he gave me the following very detailed instructions on how to do the update. It went very smoothly and worked liked a charm.
I thought I would share it, as there might be others out there that need to help someone update their iPad with OS4 to the OS5.
Here is what my son wrote:
Which iOS version does she have? iPad Settings app --> General -->About --> Version
If she already has iOS 5 or higher, then it can all be done from the iPad... it just needs a WiFi connection to download the update. Go into Settings app --> General --> Software Update, and follow the prompts.
If she is starting from iOS less than 5: [Either print this email, or have it up on your iPad for quick and easy reference]
1. Create a user account on your computer just for her so that your iTunes and iPad settings don't get mixed up with hers.
- System Preferences --> Users & Groups --> Click the lock, and enter your name and password for that computer.
--> Hit the [ + ] button, and create a new account with your friends name.
2. Apple Menu --> Logout: YourName
3. You should see either a login/password prompt, or pictures for each account. Click or type to login to the new friend account.
4. Start iTunes.
5. Store menu --> Authorize this computer...
- enter her iTunes email and password. You should be able to figure out the email address at least from the iPad Settings screen. (I'm not sure where exactly to find it in iOS 4... but it will be in there as the AppleID or iTunes account or something like that. (Try Settings--> Store.)
She'll have to know the password -- failing that, try to recover it from http://iforgot.apple.com).
6. Plug in her iPad
7. Sync. (Say yes to any questions about copying apps and files from the iPad to iTunes). Say no to anything about updating the software at this point.
(This part could take an hour or more, or maybe it's the back-up, which is step 8.)
8. Back-up the iPad. (In the bar on the left in iTunes, ctrl-click the iPad, and select 'Backup...'
9. Now, do the iOS update... in the main iPad screen in iTunes, there should be a button to trigger the update.
10. Keep it plugged in to your computer, and when it's done updating, do a 'Restore from Backup' (it might do it automatically).
11. Sync one more time for good measure...
-- Now it should be on iOS 5.1, so all future updates can be done over the air without a computer.

GeraldineAnother way to transfer photos. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive (works the same with an SD card) into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Can I update more than one iPad and iPhone to ios 5 from the same MacBook pro? Our family has one MacBook pro and several iphones and ipads. No one wants to lose their iTunes music or contact list or calendars.
Yes, but you will want to think it through before you do it.
The computer will become the "master" device, holding the definitive collection of music, photos, contacts, etc., and each iPad or iPhone will get a copy of what's on the computer. So if everyone has different collections of music or photos that you all want to keep separate from each other, you'll want to set up different accounts on the MacBook Pro. To do that, go into "System Preferences" and click "Users", then click the "+" to create a new account for each person who needs their own set of files.
That way you can each log in to your own MacBook account before you sync your iPhone or iPad, and everyone has their own copy of iTunes and their own iPhoto. If you happen to plug in an iPhone while logged into someone else's account, you just click "don't sync" (the 1st time only, it will remember after that). Sharing the same files becomes tricky, so this is only the best method if you want to keep things 100% separate.
On the other hand, if you all have your music and photos mishmashed together on the MacBook anyway or just don't care about keeping things separate, just go ahead and sync your iPhones and iPads without setting up new accounts. But in this case, you should create playlists and photo albums in iTunes and iPhoto. Then plug in an iPhone, click on it's icon in iTunes, and change the settings for Music, Photos, etc to only sync the playlists that you want on that device. Repeat for each one. They'll all remember their own settings, and continue to sync with their designated playlists or albums.
What you cannot do is use more than one computer with a single iPhone. That will wipe out the music and photos that were on it already, replacing them with the ones on the second computer. -

After latest updates on my New Ipad and Apple TV 2nd Generation, Canot stream video from the iPad to Apple TV.
I Can Stream from my iMac and from MacBook Pro, but not from iPad.

Thanks.Hey guys, unfortunately I've had to re-install Mountain Lion to get rid of the issue, but here's my experiences after trying many things and contacting AppleCare...
First, I had Lion and had upgraded to ML. They had me go do the following with limited success:
1) Reset PRAM (no effect)
2) Recovery Disk and repair permissions (no effect)
3) Went to system /Library and User /Library and basically we went through several attempts at removing various files from (/Library/InputMethods, /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons") Once I had essentially removed every file and dragged it into the trash (without deleting), the issue was resolved. So, it seems to point to an application that was not fully supported or giving problems within the ML environment. The plan was to drag them one by one back and do reboot/shutdown until I could isolate the application, but rather than do that, I just did a fresh install to take out any variable that could be present from having to do a Lion/ML upgrade. I was able to put a fresh copy of ML on the computer through the Recovery partition after establishing connection to my router. Everything is working fine now.
Anyway, hope that helps some of you. It was a frustrating experience but seems to point to application issues wih the OS and not the OS itself. I think developers are still rushing to catch up with full ML support and so you might find yourself having many new updates in drivers or applications over the next month. -
IPad OS update error killed my iPad - Why do I have to pay for a new iPad?
I have always been a happy iOS user, and my iPad serves me quite well for the last year or so.
Lately, upgrading iTunes and iPad to the latest version caused me a lot of hassles and time - that after the iTunes update, I can no loner sync my iPad with iTunes, and lately, the iPad went into a recovery mode loop that I can't get out.
the result is i don't have an iPad any more.
I live in Hong Kong and I took the iPad to an authorized care center, they are happy to exchange for a new one, but only if it is still within warranty. I am just 1 month out (bought in August 2010) and as a result, I have to pay HKD$4k+ to get a new iPad1 (64G 3G, was HKD$6488).
I clearly haven't violated any warranty, ie, no jail breaking, etc, and if the update process messed up the iPad, I honesty don't think as a consumer I should need to pay so much, and no one will try to fix this, as I think this is a software rather than a hardware issue.Edwinhww wrote:

Out of warranty is out of warranty. It doesn't matter that what happened would have been covered under warranty if you still had a warranty. You don't. It's sad for you but true. -
When I tried to update my iPad I got an error 9. Now, I am unable to access my iPad. It is in a continuous cycle when I try to update or restore the iPad 2. Plug in to iTunes 12.0.1 (latest version). Click update, told can't update, have to restore. Restore fails with error 9. Any help appreciated.
Here's the cycle:
I plug in my iPad when “cable to iTunes shows on iPad screen. It says "Your iPad can't be updated, you must restore it to factory settings." That bad enough news, but it gets worse.

Notes: I just upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) in the last week. It’s the first time I’m tried to backup/update my iPad since the iMac update.
I swapped out the USB cable to a new cable and get the same results.
I also unplugged all other USB devices from the iMac and security on my iPad and still get the same results.
I find it strange that it shows no Serial number for my my iPad 2 when plugged in. It shows “Serial Number: n/a on the screen when it displays: “iPad Recovery Mode To update your iPad without erasing its contents, click Update. To restore your iPad to its factory settings, click Restore iPad.
I prefer to update my iPad, but it displays “Your iPad can’t be updated, you must restore it to factory settings. If you previously backed up the iPad, click Restore Backup after the restore process completes.”
It’s a continuous loop. I get the display on my iPad to plug in the iPad to iTunes, plug it in which ends after going through the above procedure saying an error occurred (9).
So now I cannot use my iPad. When I turn it on I get the display showing me to plug it into iTunes with the cable. Since this is the only option I have I plug it in and the loop begins.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Check your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.

Hi Guys - for a few days I have been having problems downloading and updating apps on my iPad and iPhone. The message cycles between waiting and downloading then eventually says unable to download app. Sometimes after many attempts it wil eventually work. I tested it on an old iPhone 3G and got the same problem so it is not an iOS 5 issue. My WI-FI connection is working fine. I was wondering if this is an App Store problem? Anyone else in the UK having this problem?

I have also been having another problem - with BBC iPlayer and other video streaming not working due to insufficient bandwidth, despite my overall download speed being consistently around 50Gb. This is also affecting AppleTV downloads

I can't update my 3rd generation ipad to ios 8
I want to update my 3rd generation iPad to iOS 8 through the OTA update. I have enough space as it requires 5.8GB and I have almost 10 GB. I clicked on download and install. It did download the iOS update file and then it says, "Preparing Update." In that part, it is very slow and suddenly it freezes then reboots my device to apple logo. When it goes back, it still says, "Preparing Update" and then it will freeze again and reboot. I don't know what to do. I want to have iOS 8 so bad. I have enough space and I don't run apps on the background. I have this problem over a day now. I even tried deleting the iOS 8 file and re-download it but same thing happens. When I try to update apps on my iPad, it asks me for my mothers password and displays her apple ID. How do I change it to ask for my apple id and password??? I am signed into the store and iCloud with my apple id. I am not signed into ITunes, the store on the ipad, or icloud under her name. WIERD???
There is no featured tab in my iTunes store. . . and everywhere it shows me signed in. I had downloaded an app for my mother on HER ipad, and that is the only app I have done for her. It shows up on my phone, and now I cannot update any of my apps. I uninstalled that app on my phone, but when I want to update ones I have installed on my phone with my appleid, she keeps showing up.

How to Update iCloud On My IPad and Iphone

I recently changed my Apple ID e-mail and now I cannot figure out how to update it on my Ipad Mini or Iphone 5c. When I go to setting and then to ICloud it still shows my old apple ID e-mail. I am not able to delete my account from either device because it's asking for my password but I changed my e-mail and password. Is their anyone who can help me so I don't have to go into an Apple Store?

DuskieIf the old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll. When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

How can I update iTunes on my ipad?
I am unable to sync my iPad with iTunes on my lap top.
The warning reads:
'The ipad "xxxx's ipad' can not be used because it requires iTunes version 11.1 or later. Go to www.iTunes.com/uk to download the latest version of iTunes'
but when I go to iTunes.com/uk it redirects to apple.com and I can not find a link to update iTunes for an ipad anywhere.
If I'm being dense I apologise - please someone help!

Correct. The iTunes App on an iDevice is not the same as the iTunes Application for a Computer.
The message you are getting relates to Updating iTunes on your computer not your iPad.
What type of computer do you have...?
If a Mac...
Click on the Apple icon.. Top left in Finder...
> About this Mac > Version...what does it say?
If it says OS X 10.5.8... you have Leopard. If that is the case, you need to Upgrade to Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.x
You will then be able to Install iTunes version 11 to Sync your Device.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
Do this first...

I added apps by syncing with a Mac. It was under my husband's ACCT. When I tried to update apps on my iPad, it was his account. How do I change this? It only happens when I try to update apps
Apps will always be tied to the account from which they were purchased.
If they were purchased from your husbands account, then they will have to update using that account.
