Updated bios increased cpu temp?

I updated my bios from 1.7 to 2.1 and my cpu temp has went from an idle of 50 which isnt good anyways to an idle of 60.  I flashed because when i went inot ht menu the bios would freeze and pc need manual reboot.  Also theres alot of new options in the bios now anyone have a guide?

If you are overclocking, back down on the overclock to reduce the temps.  What type of thermal transfer material are you using on the cpu heatsink?  If too much is applied, it can restrict the thermal transfer.

Dear list,
b3 bios reports cpu temp 10c higher than b5 bios on k7n2 plat after reading posts that b3 is more stable changed back to that so far so good, seems more stable its just that cpu temp was 45-50 c on b5 bios but on b3 in the bios is says 60 c and in core center it now says 40c but was 70c before I re booted very odd indeed, its stable but soemtimes doesn't shutdown have to turn off but thats probely a widnows probelm somewhere.

I got this one with a heat duct on it. yes its all seated well and clean, just downloaded a corecenter update, cleared the cmos and started again. I am now getting 44 c for the temp now. What the bios says I dont know, could be that I hadnt cleared the bios that the temp was reading wrong.

I have just installed the new 3.9 bios and have noted the cpu temp was sitting on 50c. It is normaly on about 40c when running at 1730mhz. I dropped it back to 1530mhz and its made very little difference. Anyone else noticed this.

• USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.

• Msi x79 a gd45 update BIOS without CPU

Hi I just bought this MoBo but  it doesn't support the I73820 cpu if not properly updated.
How can I update the BIOS without the CPu installed?
is it possible?
kind regards
Gio.

Just get it to a nearby MSI service center (if any) and get the BIOS updated. If not, then there must be some computer shop which can do it for you.
If you will go for RMA then you got to wait for some time.
My city has a MSI service center so most probably yours should too.

• Z87M Gaming - False CPU Temp?

I'm helping an overseas person with a motherboard replacement and when he entered the BIOS the CPU Temp was locked at 99C never went up or down from there. CPU fan was running at a nominal speed and there wasn't smoke coming from the CPU.
I don't have the full specs but this is what I know.
Z87M Gaming
16GB Corsair Vengence Pro C9 1600MHz
Intel Core i7 4770K
Corsair CX750 750W PSU
System Temp was 27C
I've been using Skype with him and I had him point the camera at his BIOS.
I'm sorry I don't have the BIOS version, but I'm thinking that a BIOS update will fix the reading, just wondering if anyone else has had a false reading with this board.

Have you started by simply clearing the cmos?
If the board was getting a false reason the fan would ramp up. Perhaps he can send you a screen shot of this?

• Can a bubble in thermal paste make CPU temp range 39ºC-60ºC?

Hello.
I've read the postits above and they say 45 ºC idle is very likely the heatsink spreader is not properly seated or the temperature is wrong.
But, what if idle temp is about 39 on the heatsink (meassured with a termometer) and the bios says CPU temp is 39? Does that mean I did well with thermal paste and heatsink? Does that mean the motherboard is reading the righ temperature?
It could look like I am asking a very easy question, but I feel it is not. Just go on reading.
I need to know if BIOS does actually provide the rigth temp because:
When the system heats up due to CPU under heavy load, CPU temp goes up to 50-55 ºC sometimes even close to 60 ºC. Could that mean there is an air bubble within the thermal paste but it is too small to interfere when cold enough (40ºC) but big enough when warm (50ºC) lowering heatsink performance and rising CPU temp up to 60 ºC?
Also sys temp is very high. It never gets below 50 ºC but I do not know where that sys temp is taken, and as I have the NB-fan connector conected to the power supply fan, I do not know what that sys temp means. :(
Room temp is around 25 ºC.
It does boot OS and I can actually play games (heavy load for graphics card and CPU). All readings I take were got from CoreCenter application at stock settings (Vcore 1.42 - FSB 201 - Mem volt 2.5 - AGP volt 1.5).
I am afraid of having done a nice job with thermal paste. I know (just read it here) I could easily fry the CPU if not, and I feel 55-60 ºC is too much, isn't it? Of course if BIOS readings are right.
BTW. Here follow details on the system:
CPU: AMD 64 3000+ NewCastle
CPU Family/Model/Step: 15.12.0
Thermal compound: Artic Silver 5
CPU Heatsink: Thermaltake Silent Boost K
Motherboard: MSI K8N Platinum
Motherboard BIOS: 1.4 (08/26/2004)
Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon 9800 SE AIW (not modded in any way)
Power Supply: Enermax 465 W [EG-465AX-VE(W)FMA]
Case: Lian Li PC-V1000
Mem, hdd, dvd-rw, floppy and D-bracket are present but did not feel necesary to provide details on them.
Thanks

Well, if your heatsink is cold and your CPU temp on BIOS is hot there are two possible reassons:
BIOS 1.4 does not guarantee accurate CPU temp readings
Heatsink is not properly seated on the CPU or thermal paste has bubbles within
But that is not my situation. I do know CPU readings are accurate when it shows 39 ºC because I actually used a termometer in contact with the heatsink to meassure it.
What I am not sure is if that accuracy is so when the CPU is hot (>50ºC) as it is when cold (

• K8N Neo2 Plat cpu temp seems to be screw up...

Whenever I cold boot my system and when I went into the bios, my cpu temp will be like 40c while system at 28c then slowly raised to 34c which is reasonable. But cpu temp always around 40-42c not matter if I'm overclocking or not. I mean the cpu temp should be lower when cold boot and slowly raise depends on the room temperature right?
Sometimes it's screwed like cpu temp will reach up to 47c in bios and in windows when idle and when i reboot it's back to 40-42c using nvidia monitor and speedfan for readings.
Let's say when not overclocking, i set to auto for the vcore and it will shown as 1.35v. Even at 250HTT or more at 1.5v, in bios or windows, it's showing at 39-41c except for the load temp which i only see a difference.
It's just strange that cold boot cpu temp hit at 40-42c instantly and hardly moves even when vcore is at 1.5v in bios or in windows. Either that or it went up to 47c when idle sometimes but after a reboot, it went back to 40-42c again. I'm really confused why it's like this btw me using the stock cooler.

You took it right ! Is my english so bad...?? Bios ver. 1.5 shows correct readings after cold boot (yes when you are in windows and boot another time)
This 1.8 BIOS is not a Beta anymore. MSI will release this BIOS after their Holidays, many people in a german Forum are using it, without any problems!!
You should give it a try .... if you are experienced !!

• CPU Temp and CPU Fan Speed

I am having a strange problem . One time I will boot the PC and CPU temp is 43 and CPU fan speed is 1308 rpm in Core Center. I do a restart system and the CPU temp is 32 to 36 and CPU fan speed 3308. Not sure if I should trust Core Center . Bios shows CPU temp 48 and fan speed of 3328. I have been reading here that there are a bunch of threads containing some kind of problem with CPU temp or fan speed. My Bios is 1.4. If anbody can give me some ideas that would be great.

Open CoreCenter on deshtop.  Click where it says CoreCenter.  Click Cool&Quite button. Then Click apply.  This drops the fan speed back into the 1400 range and the temp will rise back to the 40s.

• Bios 3.5 and raised cpu temps

i just updated my bios to version 3.5 and my cpu temps went from 32c idle to 52 idle .now ive returned to bios 3.4 and my temps have gone back to 32c idle ..
has anyone else had this strange problem..i know the 3.5 bios updates the cpu microcode and maybe this is the problem or is it that the new bios is giving the right readings and the 3.4 bios giving the wrong readings.!!!!!!any help from the moderators is welcome on this subject

my cou core temps are wrong any way and all wasy have been core 0 idle at -2c and core 1 -22c but they have goe up to core 1 26c and core 2 8c load so its obviously geting hotter but the motherboard isant repoting that it is :/ i have used manny difforent programs and all came back with 26-27c for the cpu no mater what i do i have bios 3.3.
this never haped on my old ABIT kn9 sli it allways stated the corect cpu heat
ohh and also speed fan carnt recogise the cpu it just says temp 1,2,3 for the motherboard where as befor it was cpu, core, chip and so on (that was with old board)
any sugestions
sorry for spelling im dyslexic

well my cpu is back in my old motherboard with no problems at all no hard crashes and with the same ram timings the proper ram volts 2.1(msi board couldent handle 2.1v for ram) and the board only reports 26c no other temp used all temp programs and non of them changed when fully stresed only core temp showed any temp change but cart go buy that because my cores are so far off now on my old bard the temps go up and down like they should.
i did clear the CMOS whith all unpluged
all were at stock but ram voltage went to 1.8v so upped it to 2.1v (manual recomended) (wouldent start)
at stock if i restarted pc for somthing like an update it wouldent post unless it was un pluged at pluged back in (at stock)
and i have had no such problems with my old ASROCK board or my board im on now a ABIT kn9 570a sli

but the system temp is shown correctly (21°C/69°F (when i just started the system))

Hello!
It has been heard of before, yes, but your board is rather new so I don't think it has had an issue yet.
There is normally a sensor on the processor. If it does on your processor I can't say. If there isn't a sensor on the processor, or if it is covered with thermal grease, or otherwise damaged, BIOS and all programs that read BIOS data will be wrong.
Bit off: I'm speculating in that HSF, and I wonder how good and quiet it is. Been recommended by a store nearby.

• Does bios 1.08 really fix the CPU temp?

I just plopped in a shiny new 3700+, and I noticed that unlike my old 3200+, my temps now don't read correctly.  My old 3200+ seemed to read accurately @39c.  Now with my new 3700+ it reads 63c.  I have confirmed that it is not running anywhere near that high, and seems very close to my old 3200+.
I'm presently running bios 1.06 and everything runs great.  On previous motherboards I've had, new bios'es  come out claiming to fix CPU temp readings, but my experance has always been that I've not seen the fix claimed after flashing.
Has anyone running a 3700+ flashed to bios 1.08 actually seen the temp reading fixed?  I can't understand why my 3200+ reads right on but yet my 3700+ is so far off.
Thanks

Umm..ok, guess I will just hang with 1.06
I've always been of the opinion, that if your attempting to fix something, then flash.  If a new flash doesn't fix the thing I'm trying to fix, then I skip it.
Thanks for the feedback.

• Question regarding CPU temps and latest bios (1.8)

Hi, just build my first system using an MSI board. The K8N Neo2 Platinum with an A64 3500+ Venice. It came with bios version 1.5 and everything went smooth. Been running stable for a few days now. Cpu temps were anywhere from 38 (idle) to 50-54 under load. Though most of the time they were in the mid 40's. Which are acceptable temps.
Anyway, I just installed the latest bios tonight (1.8) and the reported temps have drooped significantly. Around 27c (idle), which is actually lower than the reported system temp (28c). One of the listed fixes for Bios 1.8 are cpu temps, but can these be correct? They seem very low. Which temps should I believe?
Thanks

I'd believe the first bios's temps more than the second...
However what temps are given when using speed fan and/or everest? (in windows)

• BIOS Update possibly causing CPU to overheat?

Hey guys,
First of all I have been on holiday for a week, so sorry if I forget some details.
I upgraded my BIOS on my Z68A-GD65(B3) from V22.2 -> V25.8
The flash seemed to go well, no problems with that. I started using OC genie and that seemed fine for a while too but suddenly my CPU temps started spiking up and it was getting really hot (I have an i7 2600k).
My CPU temps went from a stable 30°c up to 90°c!
So I turned off OC Genie but that didn't do the trick, I tried replacing the thermal paste but this didn't work either. I have tried resetting CMOS but this hasn't worked. I have looked over my BIOS and to be honest I am not 100% familiar with it to be honest. I see a lot of the settings in overclock say auto and many settings I can't access or change, is this normal? I am a little scared to try change anything from this point without assistance which I should have asked for before hand  .
As of writing this forum post I have no programs running and it's basically sitting at 60°C idle.
Any help on this would be much appreciated!
Thanks
- Tom.

Then there is no issue anymore as far as I can see. With that little airflow and small case as well as just single 120mm pre-built liquid cooler nothing better is to be expected.
Well the PC is from 2011, the case is the Antec 300, the picture makes the case seem a bit smaller than it is but it's true it isn't that big. When I first got it, it would run at 20°c. I bought it pre built from overlockers.co.uk, didn't build this one myself. I was hitting 97°c constant in BIOS yesterday.
Anyway, I just got a new cooler and installed it, my friend said the liquid cooler was probably busted and recommended me to get a Scythe Mungen 4 heatsink fan and some MX-2 thermal paste. Now it's running at around 22-30°c on all the cores!
I will have to do some stress testing just to be sure but so far so good! *touch wood*.
I just want to say a massive thanks to all of you for trying to help me out with my issues though, I really do appreciate it. Seems I still have much to learn.
Thanks so much,
- Tom
