Updated from leopard to snow leopard...

1: I cannot access my macbook pro on wifi , the wep is rejected. It's the same config as with leopard , but the pw is not accepted. ( This occurs using the macpro as my airport connected to ethernet. On my Imac I then call on macpro to go on internet.)
2: I have no access to change files ( LIbrary/ config airport )

Are you referring to the mac book pro airport ?
We have modem / router ( cable ) ---ethernet cable connection - macbookpro airport--airport broadcaster--imac airport receives .

Try a Safe Boot: Restart holding down the shift key until you (hopefully) see a grey progress bar. Once booted restart as normal from the Apple menu. Any change?
How much RAM do you have installed?

Yes, when you update you should lose any data, but make sure you have a Time Machine backup just in case.

You shouldn't have too much trouble provided you have a relatively clean system.
You should backup your personal users folders off the machine to a regular storage drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
10.6 upgrade strips out the 10.5 PPC code your not using and offers faster video drivers and some neat features like Exposé and Spaces which is highly productive as you can have 4-16 desktops visible at once and move stuff around between them (10.7 ripped that out)
10.6 is the fastest OS X version Apple has made, 10.5 is universal (more code and older video drivers) and 10.7 is slower than 10.6 in tests on the same hardware.
Your 10.5 install disk should be working, (check it first) stick it in and reboot holding the c key down, you should be able to boot from the disk. Apple isn't offering replacement 10.5 disks anymore so it needs to work in case you want to downgrade from 10.6.
You can learn how to make copies of your 10.5 disk online. I would do so.
You might decide to Carbon Copy Cloner (free/donations) your present 10.5 system to a blank external powered drive, you then can hold the option key and boot from it, erase and reverse clone back to your internal drive if you wish.
10.6 will run all your 10.5 software (some may need a update) as it has Rosetta, a compatibility system for 10.5 code. 10.7 does not, it will not run your present Rosetta/10.5 software at all, you will have to buy all new versions. Also older hardware likely won't work neither, like printers, scanners and all-in-ones etc as their drivers either won't get a update or they won't make one to force a premature hardware turnover.
If your upgrading your older 10.5 machine to 10.7, I'd advise against it, there isn't as much software ready for 10.7 (like 10.6) because it's forcing developers to rewrite their PPC based code
10.7 is slower and more glitchs than 10.6, more depressing gray all over and strange UI changes.
Also 10.8 is due out this summer and may not run on older hardware, so it's looking like you will be best off with 10.6.8 and leaving it at that to get the most software choice/performance and leave 10.8 for a new hardware/software purchase.
If your going to 10.7 anyway, then check this database to make sure the software your going to have to buy is ready or not. IMO, Lion for you and your older machine is a wasted effort and better the new software on a new hardware purchase.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
I must admit though I throughly hate OS X Lion, as do a lot of other people,  it's only because it's quality is absolutely terrible and unbecoming of Apple, likely why Mountain Lion 10.8 is being released this summer a year in advance and only a year after Lion. However my opinion about Lion's poor quality isn't relfected in my advice to you. For you it's more of a older hardware/have to buy all new software type deal which a newer machine with 10.8 and promises to be better/more refined OS than 10.7.
So in other words, upgrade to 10.6.8 and stay there, save your pennies for a new machine Early 2013, by then 10.8 would have several months and a lot of software/bugs worked out for it.

  • I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all

I have tried to update from Leopard to Snow Leopard using disk. New OS wouldn't load and now laptop won't start at all. Simply get the Apple logo and the clock below and then after about 10 mins the laptop switched itself off. The Snow Leopard  disk is a brand new family edition. Error message when attempting to install was that "this software cannot be installed on this disk".

Thanks Fred, but I've tried '''ALL''' that already.
I '''THINK''' I might have found the problem - the Profiles folder has been locked by inherited properties from the levels above. I have had to go all the way up to my User folder and reset ALL the properties from there down to be unlocked so that I could remove the prefs.js file so that it could be recreated on the next launch of FF. Exactly why my User folder is locked in such a way as to stop me/FF making changes when I have been able to alter preferences at will in the past, I don't know ...
So far, so good. I have since done a complete shutdown and when I restarted this morning, FF seems to be behaving itself ...

  • Updating from Tiger to Snow Leopard without buying the Mac Box Set

Is it possible to update from Tiger to Snow Leopard without buying the Mac Box Set? My sister already has iLife 09 so I could borrow it and simply buy Snow Leopard. Is that possible or would it still violate the licensing agreement?

Did you read item C from the license link you posted (underline was added for emphasis)?
Leopard Upgrade Licenses. If you have purchased an Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer _as long as that computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it._ If you have purchased a Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard license, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on up to a maximum of five (5) Apple-branded computers at a time as long as those computers are located in the same household (as defined above), are used by persons who occupy that same household, and each such computer has a properly licensed copy of Mac OS X Leopard already installed on it. The Family Pack Upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard License does not extend to business or commercial users.
The OP asked about using the upgrade (and, obviously, try to avoid buying the box set) to move from OS X 10.4 to OS X 10.6. I mentioned the license agreement to allow the OP to make their own decision.

  • What is the best procedure to update from Leopard (or Snow Leopard) to Mavericks?

    The pacient:
    Macbook Pro A1278
Running 10.5.8 -- but have an Update DVD to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
    Got slower in start-up
Very slow in power-off (takes lot of time on shut-down!)
What is the BEST procedure to update it from Leopard to Mavericks?
    A) update & clean
Backup to Time Machine (in Leopard)
Update from 10.5.8 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
    Update 10.6 to 10.6.8
    Donwnload and Update to Maverics
Do any kind of clean to increase speed in start-up / shut-down - Any suggestions?
    or
    B) fresh install & update & recover Time Machine
    Backup to Time Machine
    Reinstall a fresh 10.5.8 (Leopard) - should increase speed in start-up / shut-down ??
Update from 10.5.8 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
    Update 10.6 to 10.6.8
    Donwnload and Update to Maverics
Recover users data & config from Time Machine
I am thrilled to heard your advices!!
PS. Aditional suggestions to make a faster boot / power-down , before or after updating are very welcome ;!)

Go to  Menu > About this Mac > and tell us Version, Processor & Memory specs on your Mac. Also available hard disk space, by choosing your Macintosh HD and "Get Info" (cmd-i)
If you're having issues now with slow sratup and shutdown, it's probably a third party item. If it is, then it may limited to your user account. If that's the case and you do a clean install, then migrate you will wind up migrating it right back.
The first thing to check would be to boot into your Guest account and test, or try starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items.
Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours. Then log out and back in or restart and test.
If the problem is sorted, be sure to make a new backup before proceeding. Since the problem is sorted and you have a backup without the offending items, then there's no reason not to use the simple upgrade method you outlined in A. With the exception of "cleaning". The only cleaning your Mac should need is with a soft cloth. Stay away from so-called cleaning/optomizing utilities.

  • How do I update from leopard to maverick os

I cannot find the upgrade from leopard to maverick os in the app store.  Does anyone know where to get it?

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and

    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

  • Updated From Tiger to snow leopard

Hi all. Wondering if anyone can walk me through the process of upgrading my 10.4 to 10.6. i ordered an external hard drive (IOMEGA MINIMAX 2TB) to back up my current files and bought the newest box set (ilife 11). I haven't used any kind of back up system prior to this so I don't want to lose anything in the process of upgrading. I guess I could use help with all of it.
    1. backing up my current files
    2. upgrading to 10.6
Anyone up for the task? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Robert,
Backing up first is a --good--- great idea.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
That should put us on safe footing, just boot from the external drive to test it out for being complete first.
The default install of 10.6.x is to do what used to be called an Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...

    No worry there.
On iLife 11, there have been some problems if you have a lot of previous iLife App's data. Will wait to here on that from you, but hold off installing that part for right now.

  • Finder can't find old files/folders prior to SL update from Leopard

    Hello.
I'm having problems with Finder tool. I've read some topics and even tried some terminal commands to no avail. My wife's account can't find her quicken files prior to update. She is a well organized person and now has to go into the folders to find the files instead of a quick spotlight seach.
Will I have to restore her profile again from timecapsule? How can I get finder to find right again?
A little more details of upgrade: I've got 2 machines, and Imac and a macbook. The 2nd one is ok. On it I did the upgrade straght on top of the old system. On the Imac the procedure was different. I set the machine to zero and put SL and then pulled the timecapsule backup, that was still on Leopard. Would that cause a confloct on finder? Only the Imac can't find the older files, prior to the update.
I'm thinking of restoring the timecapsule backup again to Leopard on the Imac and upgrading like i did on the macbook.
If there's and easier way to restore the finder's abililites to find, I'd surelly apreciate it. Saves me a lot of trouble having all done again on the Imac.
    Thx

I'm thinking of restoring the timecapsule backup again to Leopard on the Imac and upgrading like i did on the macbook.
    Best move.

  • I need to update from Leopard

My OS is apparently way out of date. Where do I go or where do I look up ways to update my 10.5.8 up to 10.7?

If you call the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE they can sell you a code to download Lion. However, that I believe requires access thru the App store, which means you have to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard first. They can sell you that too.
An alternative might be to buy Lion on a USB memory stick, then see this article to install it.
You may already know that 10.7 Lion dropped support for running PowerPC code. Many are surprised when Office 2004 will no longer run.

  • Software Update from Leopard to Tiger!?

    Please forgive this newbe.
This evening I checked for updates for my brand new OS x 10.5 Mac, and two items were returned. One for iPhoto and one for 10.4.11 Tiger.
Not knowing any better and hoping that the software would do the right thing, I just clicked on ok, (entered the password), and off it went. Before I knew it, I had been upgraded from 10.5 to 10.4.11
    Help!
I do have all the installation disks, etc, so I can reinstall 10.5, iWork, etc, but is there a better way?
    Thanks
    Jim, ns2k

Because when I check system profiler; software; it shows "Mac OS X 10.4.11 (8S2167)"
It was a 10.5 machine until this evening
The update size was about 105MB and required a restart after (if that means anything)
I am more used to Windows, where restart is (or was until recently) required for almost everything
