Updated imac to OS X 10.8.5, now can't restart or shutdown

Hi
I applied the new 10.8.5 update this afternoon. As part of this it asks for a restart. Thing is it won't let me restart, logoff or shutdown now.
Any advice on what the problem may be please?
Thanks
TinTin_57

You'll need to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button until it shuts down.
After that boot up cmd-r into your Recovery Volume. Choose Disk Utility from the menu and Repair Disk.
If you get errors run it until it reports okay, or Disk cannot be fixed".
Reboot normally.

  • I recently updated my iPod touch to sync through iCloud - now can't connect to the internet through wifi, my macbook air is working as we speak

I recently updated my iPod touch to sync through iCloud - now can't connect to the internet through wifi, my macbook air is working as we speak. ive tried 'forgetting this network" in settings; tried turning off and on again; and pulling my hair out! The last was equally useless and a little painful!

    Try:
    - Resetting the iPOd. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Pwer off and then back on yur router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reet Network Settings

  • Updated to 10.4.1 on Itunes and now can no longer access the actual Itunes store ...

Now i have a bit more space, i can explain what is really properly wrong. The other day i updated my itunes to the 10.4.1 version and now can no longer access the Itunes store - whenever i try to do so i get the bar at the top gets to about half way then stops and nothing happens - on rare occasions however i am taken into a place that resembles the Itunes store but there is no detail and whenever i click on anything, NOTHING happens.
Now on a SUPER RARE occasion i'll get a notice that the request was timed out?
If ANYBODY can help me i'll be very grateful
    Matthew

Purple-Gecko...all that I can say is, "Boom!!!"  You are THE man/woman, whichever the case may be.
The "netsh winsock reset" command worked like a charm for my machine (running Windows XP SP3).  I have had two weeks of frustration with this issue and finally found your post which got me back online with the iTunes store.  My problem accessing the iTunes store began once I downloaded and installed iTunes 10.5 in preparation to upgrade to OS5.  Once 10.5 was installed, I could open iTunes and access everything except the store (which prevented any of my devices from being able to sync). I followed all of the suggestions that I could find in Apple Support and the suggestions that I was emailed from Apple's support techs.  I unistalled all Apple software and reinstalled iTunes multiple times, and still could not access the store.
Your suggestion is the only "cure" that I have found.
I thank you, my iPod thanks you, and my iPhone 4 thanks you for taking the time to post this fix.

  • I updated the OS on my new ipad and now can't even start a sync with my win7 PC. I had no problem before the OS upgrade - How can I fix it?

I never had a problem synching before I updated the OS on my new ipad and now I can't even start a sync.  I have a win7 PC and use the ipad every day. How can I fix this so it syncs again?

I don't have my computer in front of me to check, but when you connect your iPad to your computer and open iTunes, there are options on what to sync. To manually manage music and other options.
If you can sync movies but not music then it suggests that the connection is good, so that part works. Which means it just may be a setting in iTUnes (and I mean iTunes on the computer, not the iPad)

  • I've just updated my iPad2 to iOS 5.1 and now can't open MyWallet where all my secure info and passwords are held. HELP

I've just updated my iPad 2 to iOS 5.1 and now can't open MyWallet where all my secure info and passwords are filed. HELP!

The app hasn't been updated in almost a year, so it may not be compatible with iOS 5 or 5.1. They have next to no support information on their web site, so you may need to email them:
    [email protected]
The normal route for a single app that won't launch is to remove and reinstall it, but that would probably lose all your information unless you have it synched to a computer. I'd suggest contacting the developer.
Update: their Twitter feed says that they've had to do a number of updates for iOS 5.1 to fix an issue that was crashing all their apps under 5.1, and have submitted them to Apple. So stay tuned for a while and look for an update.
    Regards.

  • HT4623 My ipod does not have a "software update". I have reset the ipod and now can't download anything to it.

I have reset my ipod and cleared all the info on it. Now I am unable to download any apps. It says I need to update the software but I don't seem to have that capability. What do I do?

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

  • 20" intel iMac is having bad week, "Sleep" hiccup, now can't find system

    Hi all,
I'm running a 20" intel iMac, purchased new in January 2008. It's been a trooper.
A handful of days ago, it developed an odd glitch. The fan would "power down" like what one hears when the computer would go to sleep -- but this would be in the middle of use. It would immediately come back up. No screen dimming. On most occasions, this would take down open and in-use programs (for example, Safari).
Today it again did this, and shortly thereafter, the system "froze" (cursor was movable but no reaction from any open program; no visible activity from anything running). I rebooted by holding the power key for 10 seconds, waited for some time (±15 minutes), then came back to power it on. It powers up, fan spins up, white screen with apple and the spinning wait icon (not the beachball, but the "clock lines" one normally sees at restart). It does not progress beyond this point.
In short, I see this as two troubles that I need help with.
    1. The system was damaged/corrupted during the last startup, and the drive can no longer see it.
    2. There is a problem with the fan, a possible overheating issue, or perhaps an issue with a power module/SMC. The fact that programs are crashing with this makes me somewhat skeptical of this being merely "dusty fan" or even common overheating.
I'd like an idea of what steps to take next, either to diagnose what is wrong with my iMac, or to bring her back to health.

    HI,
Unfortunately, it sounds like the startup disk needs replacing.
Boot from your Mac install disk and run Disk Utility.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
If the hard disk appears to be ok, you could try Resetting the SMC

  • I was updating my iphone to ios6 earlier and paused it when i went out, now can't restart it?

I had my iphone ipdated onto ios6 earlier in the apple store, but obviously had to leave whilst it was still updating, and as i lost wifi i told my iphone to pause the update and resume it later on, now i'm trying to resume the update and i don't know how, all of my apps have the blank grey bar on them as if they were about to upload, but nothing is happening and when i click on them nothing happens, should i try turning it off or does anyone have any ideas? Please help if you can, thanks alot

I did call apple care and they guided me through everything..  they said it was the hardware
I was given this phone last year as a present
i know, it was not new.. so it could have been on an other cell provider  i am not sure if it was so at the moment that is all i can do

  • I updated my iphone with new apple email address now can't get into apple store to down load

I updated my email address because I no longer have the old email address, since then can't log on to my phone to  download new apps/games.

But what about apps purchased with the previous ID ( the non email address one). When they need to get updated, what do you do?

  • App Store said to update Evernote, but would not let me. Now can't install!

The App Store said to update Evernote, but there was not update button option. I thought that was strange. So I rebooted and eventually uninstalled the app, but now when I go into the App Store, there is no download option. All I can do is stare at Evernote in the App Storelike a meuseum or somthing.

Not sure from your post where in the App Store you are looking -- Have you tried opening App Store on your phone, then tapping "Updates" at the lower right and then "Purchased" at the top. If you have previously downloaded the app and it is no longer on your phone, it should be in the list and have a cloud with down arrow icon that you can use to download it.

  • OH NO.. HELP!!!... Restarted whil updating to 10.5.8, now can't restart

Like an idiot, I restarted my Macbook Pro (17in) while it was updating to 10.5.8. 10.5.8 was stuck at the progress dialog with no progress update for more than an hour. So I thought it was hung and restarted my MacBook Pro.
Now, I get a kernel dump every time I try to restart. I've tried to restart via the Leopard install DVD and it keeps restarting.
I tried restarting in single user mode and still kernel dump!
    PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!

Hey. Hmm, yeah there have been instances of the latest update taking a long time and seeming to hang. So you say you get a Kernel Panic when you start up the computer? Your system is probably hosed and will have to be reinstalled. If you need instructions on reinstalling the operating system from the DVD check out http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/upgrade-reinstall/mac-os-x-upgrade-reins tall.php. You could probably try an Archive & Install, as detailed in step 8b.
Alternatively, if you have a bootable clone or Time Machine backup you could try restoring from that. Instructions for that procedure can be found at http://www.tekserve.com/service/mac-faq/backingup/time-machine-restore-system.ph p. You will need to boot off the install DVD to do so, however. Restarting and holding down the C key with the install DVD in the drive should force the computer to boot up off of it.
Are you sure you're using the DVD that came with your computer or a Leopard retail disk? The disk that came with another computer won't work for this process and the behavior you're describing suggests that you're using the wrong disk.
    Good luck!

  • I updated my iPhone to the new iOS7 but now can't transfer apps via USB and no wifi

I cannot seem to update my iphone with new apps even though I've done it before with a USB. I don't have wifi.  Now what?

What happens when you try to update using an USB connection
to iTunes on a computer? If there is an error message, what is
the exact wording? Are you using the latest version of iTunes 11.1.1?

  • HT4623 I have updated my iphone 4 to 6.0 and now can not make calls or receive them...battery life is very short as well.

Not able to send or receive calls since upgrading my iPhone 4.  Every time i make a call it fails.  I have also noticed that my the battery life is very short as well.
What is Apple and other carriers doing about this?  When will this be fixed?

Look to the right in the "More Like This" box for assistance.  Your issue has been explored ad nauseum.

  • Can't open Firefox any more. Shows up in processes but never activates. It was coming up yesterday but running at around 120k. Did my updates, tested my plug-ins, extensions, etc. but now can't even use it. Any suggestions?

Firefox was working fine but started having crashes this week. Concurrent with multiple problems I'm having with a new Brother printer with driver downloaded via Firefox. No viruses, no spyware, cleaned cache, deleted cookies - have done everything I can think of. And then today, can't even open Firefox though it does show up in processes at around 30K. Yesterday it was coming up at 100k+ when it was working but was very slow. For example, my email through AOL, it duplicated every email I opened, crippling the whole process. Turned off compatability mode - have done everything suggested via the Firefox site. If I have to reinstall it, is there a way I can save my bookmarks?

You could experiment with giving OBP the absolute path to that USB device, but I doubt you'll be successful. The Sunfire 280R (same hardware as the Sunblade 1000, Sunblade 2000, and Netra 20) design expected USB to be only for keyboard and mouse, not for any storage devices. If booting ever works manually from a USB stick, then you could create a custom alias for the device.
Try an experiment by using a CD or DVD of an older release of Solaris 10 instead of the current release.
The earlier ones need fewer hardware resources. I also recall a few forum posts that seem to suggest the bootblock structure on the CD's and DVD's of those earlier releases was more compatible with older hardware.
You might also need to get yourself a copy of the OBP 4.x Command Reference Manual, document No. 816-1177
