Updated Java "broke" SMC (Solaris Mgmt Console)

Hello,
I have a SunFire 280R running Solaris 8.
The application running on the system will be upgraded soon, and required that I update Java.
I believe I've missed some steps, as the SMC (Solaris Management Console) will not run now.
I've read the SMC FAQ, but may have missed something. Any help would be appreciated.
Before doing anything:
# java -version
java version "1.4.1_03"
# cd /usr
# ls -la java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 6 Mar 14 2003 java -> ./j2se
I installed a recent version of Sun Java from a CD-R which I had burned:
# cd /usr
# /cdrom/java_1_5_0_04/jre_1_5_.sh
agree?
Unpacking...
Checksumming...
extracting...
inflating...
Creating
Done.
# /cdrom/java_1_5_0_04/jre_1_52.sh
agree?
Unpacking...
Checksumming...
Done.
After the installation was complete, I replaced the link:
# cd /usr
# rm java
# ln -s /usr/jre1.5.0_04 java
# ls -la java
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 16 Oct 11 09:11 java -> /usr/jre1.5.0_04
# java -version
java version "1.5.0_04"
When I attempt to launch SMC from the CDE menu bar, it tries, then fails, without a message.
When I open a terminal and type "smc", it tries, and then I get a message that there is no valid version of Java in the places that it expects it, just as the FAQ mentions, and to either fix and try again, it set $JAVA_HOME.
This is right about where my knowledge of Solaris 8 abruptly ends. If I can type "java -version" in a terminal window and get the reply "java version "1.5.0_04"" then why can't SMC find it?
I am stumped. Someone tried to help by telling me to edit the .bashrc file, and add $JAVA_HOME, but I can't find that file on this system anywhere.
I was able to get the SMC to launch once, after trying to set $JAVA_HOME, but it apparently only worked for that terminal window. After the SMC was closed, and the terminal window closed, and someone tried to launch it from a new terminal window, it didn't work again.
I'm stumped. How can I get SMC to play nice with the newer Java? I know enough to know that this is probably very basic, and I am just forgetting something obvious.
thanks very much for your help!
-Bill

I was able to correct this problem on my server
The .server file is the smc java keystore that contains
the private/public key pair for SSL
You can create this file by executing
cd /usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin
certtool -genkey
Once the keys are generated execute
/etc/init.d/init.wbem stop
/etc/init.d/init.wbem start
if your smpatch no longer works

  • SMC - Solaris Management Console in whole root zone

    Hi,
Is it possible to run smc in whole root zone? Is there a howto for this?
I have created a whole root zone in my x86 and sparc systems but I can't seem to manage the zones through smc (Adding users, share disks and etc).
I was able to manage my sparse zones with smc but for some reason smc won't even start in whole root zone. The whole root zone does not seem to have smcserver and bunch of other directories relating to smc.
    Thanks...

Are you maybe confusing "Sun Management Center" (this forum) with "Solaris Management Console" (a different product)?

  • Solaris Mgmt Console Can't See Disks

    Hi,
I recently installed Sparc Solaris 10 6/06 on a Sun Fire v440. I configured a hardware raid mirror on the built in controller card using raidctl. The two root disks are correctly mirrored and report "OK" when raidctl is issued for a status.
I have two additional disks that I wanted to mirror using SVM.
When I start the Solaris Management Console, I initially get no errors. When I navigate to the Disks section, I get a pop up error window stating:
"Attempt to get a list of all Disks failed with unexpected error: null"
If I click on the OK button on the error dialog, the management console is available but no disks are shown in the usual window.
I googled here and there for an explanation but found nothing.
    Does anyone have an idea?
    Thanks,
    Phil

Instead of using SMC - why not use the format command - this utility has traditionally allowed the sysadmin to perform disk related tasks. If you plan to be "playing around" with disks on a solaris system - smc is not the tool. If you had intended to use ZFS - you're stuck with the command line (really sucks if you're dependent on GUIs). Either use the free SVM command line or get a copy of Veritas Foundation Basic Suite "free" (but crippled - limited to 4 volumes and 4 filesystems) - http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/sfbasic/index.jsp. At least with Veritas - the GUI will step you thru the entire process of disk management. I can't say that for SVM, with a bit of persistence and skill - you might not be disappointed. I prefer the command line because you can specify a myriad of parameters that the GUIs can't initutively tell you.

    Hi all,
We had just finish setting up a new Solaris 10 environment. When i launch smc on the server, on selecting toolbox there's an error message:
No Solaris Management Console server was available on the specified server. Please ensure there is a Solaris Management Console server available on the specified host and that it is running.
However, upon verifying whether smc is running:

Not sure why this error message appeared, thanks.

  • Solaris Managment console in Java desktop release 3

    Hi Experts,
I have recently installed Solaris 10/8 on a x86 based system. When I try to login to the server through CDE it gives a message "CDE has been deprecated and will be removed in future release of Solaris. Please move to the Java Desktop System (aka JDS)"
If I login using JDS I am unable to see Solaris Managment console. Is there any new console that is been used in the JDS or we have to do the managment manually?
Revert back if you have any questions.
    Regards,
    Sunil.

How I've always done it is open up a shell and just type SMC that always seems to work for me, even in the days when I was using cde I would do the same.
I guess, that for me, an X session was just a way to have a lot of terminal windows open, but that's just me :)

  • Solaris Management Console toolbox could not be loaded

    Hello,
when I start SMC I get this error, toolbox http://ultra:989/toolboxes/smc.tbx could not be loaded. I only noticed this yesterday, and I think it is related to some patch that was applied recently. When I did wget http://ultra:898/toolboxes/smc.tbx I got these headers
    HTTP/1.0 200 OK
    Date: Thu, 27 Oct 02005 21:21:52 GMT
    Server: Tomcat/2.1
    Content-Type: text/plain

    Last-Modified: Tue, 31 Aug 02004 21:27:14 GMT
    and wget complains of
    Last-modified header invalid -- time-stamp ignored.
perhaps it is this header that's invalidating the download and so SMC complains?
This is solaris 9 on an ultra 5, fully patched (up to yesterday).
    Thanks for your help!

I seem to have come across the same issue as well. On an Ultra 2, I'm running Solaris 10 1/06 (after an upgrade from Solaris 10 5/05). SMC 2.1 was working fine before I applied the latest Recommended Solaris 10 patch cluster. Now when starting smc, I get the message,
    "Server Not Running
No Solaris Management Console server was available on the specified server. Please ensure there is a Solaris Management Console server available on the specified host and that it is running."
with stop signs for all the management tools. I do not have patch 121309 installed which I suspect applies to the 6/06 release. In comparison to a working system, neither workstation had the entry for "smc 898/tcp" in its /etc/services file. I added it but did not make a difference so I removed the entry.
"/etc/init.d/init.wbem stop/start" did not do the trick. Using dananderson's advice in,
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5057915
I ended up having to completely remove and re-add all packages that had to do with smc using the Solaris 1/06 installation CD set. I confirmed smc was working again without the error. Update Manager suggested I add patches 121308-08 and 124188-02. Hesitantly, I added those two patches, rebooted and confirmed smc produced the error message again. I removed patches 121308-08 and 124188-02 and smc started working again. I will have to refrain from applying those patches so it continues to run.
I wish I had further explanation as to why those updates are killing my smc.

  • Solaris Management Console hanging

Did anyone have a similar problem?
We are running Solaris Management Console 2.1 on Solaris 10 update 3
It was working fine until recently.
    Now, it hangs forever.
We have no problem in launching it, loging to using our normal account, and switching to sysadmin role.
However, it hangs forever every time we try to do some action with the following error message showing on the terminal screen:

at com.sun.admin.cis.common.ListFetch.run(ListFetch.java:284)I am not an expert in Java, but the above message seems to indicate a Sun JRE classpath problem. The symptom in the X-Windows session is always the same: hangs forever when trying to browse users to perform necessary operations, such as adding, deleting, changing groups, and so on.
We have the following JDK installed

I have received the following reply from Sun tech support:
    Hello again Shen,
After I got your email I went back through your files and did an internal search on the breaking of classpath and java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError error.  I found a case that had similar error messages and the root cause was determined to be the order of the patch installation.
    Here is a clip from that case;
    ===
The patch install order for 121308-12 and 119313-19 can have a negative affect on SMC.
Please have the customer try the following workaround:
    patchrm 121308-12 and 119313-19
In this order, patchadd 119313-19 and then patchadd 121308-12
    ===
    Your netinfo files show that you are only up to 119313-16 on your wbem patch. The latest patch is;
    119313-19
    SunOS 5.10: WBEM Patch
    Date:  Mar/27/2008
You may find that updating to this patch will make the edit to the /usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/smc file unnecessary.
Since your original problems have been resolved, I will go ahead and close the case.  You may want to consider updating to the latest WBEM patch on your next update cycle.
    Thanks,
    Dave
I guess patch 119313-19 solves the problem.
I have launched SMC on a few servers that I haven't changed /usr/sadm/lib/smc/bin/smc file.
    SMC didn't hang.
So, I checked for patch level and they all have patch 119313-19 installed.

  • Managing ldap sub tree with Solaris Mnagement Console

    Hi,
I'm using Sun ONE Directory Server 5.2 in Solaris 9 envronment.
I want to use Solaris Management Console to manage my Ldap Name Service.
On my ldap server I can display two scopes :
    Scope 1 file:/example/example
    Scope 2 ldap:/example/dc=example,dc=com
With SMC Editor I've created a toolbox to manage my ldap domain and I can manage users and groups only on trunk tree but not on the sub tree.
Does someone can tell me please if it's possible to display the ldap sub tree with SMC and if it's possible to manage other cotainers than people or group containers with SMC (for ex. netgroup container) ?
    Thanks.
    Dra

By try and error I found out that even when I upgraded my
Sun ONE Directory Server 5.2 to patch level 2, the configuration
in the administration directory was not changed to the new
version. So one couldn't connect with the new console
version 5.2pl2 but used and needed the old one effectively.
To use the 5.2 pl 2 console there need to be the following
    files in the client directory:
    <root of sun ldap console>/java/jars/
    ds522.jar (main console application)
    ds522_en.jar (english language resources)
ds522_de.jar (german language resources, in my case, optional)
ds522.icon (icon used in the console)
    and for the administration console:
    admserv522.jar
    admserv522_en.jar
    admserv522_de.jar
    admserv522.icon
The old file with the '52' in their name may stay where they
are to connect to unpatched 5.2 Servers and 5.2pl2 Servers
    without updated configuration.
    The configuration is under:
    cn=ResourceEditorExtension, ou=4.0, ou=Admin, ou=Global Preferences, ou=zentrale.edekanet.de, o=NetscapeRoot
Search for the attribute 'nsclassname' in all subentries where there
is a substring '@ds52.jar' and change it to '@ds522.jar'.
With newer versions of the Sun Directory Server there are
even jar files with names like 'ds523.jar'. Proceed like above.
After the next start of the console you are using the new 5.2pl2
Versions with all bugfixes and enhancements. To verify you may
move the '52' files away, start and connect. If the directory server
is configured the right way it won't try to download the '52' files
    to your local computer.

  • Cannot start Solaris Management Console in Solaris 9

I cannot start the Solaris Management Console in Solaris 9. The splash screen appears for a few seconds, then nothing else.
There is a error: "Assertion Fail: Offset < fFileSize ..." something like that.
    Please help me~~~~~~~

    Java Bug 4838130:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4838130.html
suggests to trace the problem by running the java application with JAVA2D_DEBUGFONTS defined, so try
    env JAVA2D_DEBUGFONTS=1 smc
The bug report also documents a workaround: Set the environment variable JAVA_FONTS to
    /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType, i.e.
    env JAVA_FONTS=/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType smc

  • Enhanced Storage Problem in Solaris Management Console Started in XManager

I have Sun Fire 480 with solaris 5.9 installed on it. I use XManager 1.3.9 on windows 2000 workstation to connect to it and launch Solaris Management Console (smc). After starting smc I point to Management Tools -> This Computer (sf480dbs) -> Storage -> Enhanced Storage. At that moment Log In dialog appears and I give root user name and password. After a few seconds SMC disappears (exits). If I look at CDE Error log there is the following exception

Try search the WEB for your display adapter drivers. However, most of new especially intergated graphics are still not supported.
You may try to get it working with xsun, run kdmconfig and specify as display adapter VGA or Super VGA. I know that in some cases it helps.
As well do the same with Xorg and run /usr/X11/bin/xorgcfg, try to find somekind of generic VGA in drivers that are listed there.
As I know, smc runs only in graphical mode.
I saved the settings and pressed F2 for testing. I could see the displayDid you see buttons on that display (something like "yes", "no")?
xsun is very hard to set with most of display adapters and monitors, sometimes it shows only part of the screen, so you might not to see these buttons. However if you see them, press "yes" (or something like that, I dont exactly remember). Then reboot and your computer should start the GUI.
